James Michael Howard - November 11, 1949 - March 14, 2024

Departed: 03/14/2024 (Lansing)
Obituary Preview: In the city of Detroit, on a chilly morning of November 11, 1949, a bright star was born named James Michael Howard. His light shimmered brightly through the universe, leaving traces of wit and resilience, intelligence, and laughter, until his light took a different form on March 14, 2024. Known fondly as 'Pop' and “Jim” by those who held him dear, James crafted a life filled with the pursuit of knowledge, the love of nature, and the warmth of family.
In the tapestry of life, every thread tells a story, and Pop's thread was vibrant and resilient. He graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Sociology and also attended the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources for Environmental Studies. Jim charted his course as a proud City Planner for Williamstown Township, a role he embraced with dedication and fervor. His passion for the environment was not confined to his work. He was a steward of the Earth, recycling every scrap, preserving nature's beauty, and instilling in his family the importance of not being wasteful. Jim treasured our country’s national parks, appreciating the magnificence of the Blue Ridge of the Shenandoah all the way to the Rockies, the Olympics and Mount Rainier. Isle Royale in his home state held a very special place in his heart. His love for hiking was a testament to his bond with the natural world, and his interest in the PBS Newshour and NPR reflected his intellectual curiosity. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn," and Jim was indeed an acorn, sowing seeds of wisdom, resilience, and humor in the hearts of those he encountered.
Jim had an unyielding love for his family, a beacon of light guiding him through life. He leaves behind his daughter Kelly Howard, (and grandchildren Beckett and Flan Howard-Kuzma) and his son Ryan Howard, who will forever remember his laughter, his wisdom, and his love. His sister, Sue Bargo, brother, Doug Howard, and ex-wife, Terri Simmons, also survive him, their shared history woven into the fabric of their lives. Preceding him in death were his parents, Aloysius and Mary Howard, and his beloved sister, Patricia Mudge. Each of these individuals, whether they walk on this Earth or gaze down from the stars, were important chapters in the book of Pop’s life.
Indeed, the world has lost a man of intellect and humor, resilience, and love. But those who knew Jim know that his light has not dimmed; it has merely changed form. As we remember him, let us honor his memory by cherishing the Earth as he did, by learning as he did, by loving as he did. Please share your memories of Pop and upload photos of him to his memorial page, so that his light may continue to shine brightly in our hearts. Once a Parkie, always a Parkie.

Mom was a devoted wife to Bill and a loving mother and grandmother to her three daughters and grandchildren. She also was a foster mother to over 40 children throughout the years. She worked along-side her husband Bill doing janitorial work at several churches and church organizations in the Lansing area. She was a fantastic cook, baking and cooking things for church potlucks, neighbors, family, and friends. She was a devoted Christian and long-time member of Judson Memorial Baptist Church. She will be missed by all her family and friends. She loved making people laugh by acting silly and enjoyed going for coffee with her friends. When she became more home bound, her lifeline was the telephone talking to her friends all hours of the day. She and the neighbor lady, Leona would talk every night while they were in bed, giggling like teenage girls and would always say they loved each other before finally going to sleep. And finally, if you didn't sit and drink a Dr. Pepper with her, why that would be a catastrophe.
The family thanks Jagroop Singh Buttar and his staff at Country Acres for the excellent love and care of our mom Annie, especially her special momma, Yuvet White. You all were such a blessing to her. The family would also like to thank the Parker family and Dave and Mary Jane Spears for watching out for mom after dad passed away. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024 at Judson Baptist Church, 531 Glendale Ave. Lansing, MI 48910. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service for visitation. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Judson Baptist Church in Annie’s name. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to share the news of a loved one's passing with others, allowing them to pay their respects, offer condolences, and celebrate the person's life. It also serves as a way to provide details about funeral or memorial services, if planned.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family members or close relatives of the deceased write the obituary. They may work with a funeral home or obituary writer to craft a fitting tribute. In some instances, a friend or colleague may be asked to contribute to or write the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, military service, or charitable affiliations.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-250 words. However, some online platforms may allow for longer or more detailed tributes.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person who has passed.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication fee. Some newspapers may also accept online submissions.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper, its circulation size, and the length of the obituary. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $500 or more for a single publication. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary without printing it in a newspaper. These websites often offer more flexibility in terms of content, photos, and guest books. Some popular options include Legacy.com, Tributes.com, and Obituary.com.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper's schedule and deadlines. Typically, an obituary will be published within 1-3 days of submission. Online platforms usually publish immediately after submission.

Can I make changes to an already published obituary?

If you need to make corrections or updates to an already published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform directly. They may be able to make changes for a fee or provide guidance on how to publish a revised version.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts: name, age, date of birth and death. It's often used when a full obituary isn't desired or feasible.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's passing and providing biographical information. A eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life and share personal anecdotes.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning. This can ensure that their story is told accurately and with their own voice. However, it's essential to discuss your wishes with your loved ones beforehand.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries that maintain microfilm collections of past issues. Many genealogy websites and online archives also offer access to historical obituaries.

Are obituaries public records?

In most cases, yes. Obituaries are considered public records since they're published in newspapers or online platforms accessible to the general public. However, some private online platforms may restrict access to certain information.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with friends and family who might not see it in print. You can also create a memorial page or group to collect condolences and memories.

How do I respond to condolences on an online obituary?

You can usually respond directly through the online platform by posting a comment or sending a private message. Alternatively, you can respond via email or phone if contact information is provided.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer donations to charity instead of traditional flowers. Simply specify the charity name and address (or online donation link) in the obituary.

How do I handle condolence messages from strangers?

If you receive messages from people you don't know personally, it's perfectly fine to acknowledge their kind words with a simple "thank you" or no response at all. Focus on supporting those closest to you during this difficult time.

Can I create a memorial website or page for my loved one?

Yes! Many online platforms offer tools to create memorial websites or pages where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences. These sites can serve as lasting tributes to your loved one.

How long does it take for grief support resources to become available after publishing an obituary?

Grief support resources like counseling services or support groups may become available shortly after publishing an obituary. Funeral homes often provide these resources as part of their services or can recommend local organizations that offer support.

Can I republish an old obituary on its anniversary?

Sometimes! Check with the original publication source (newspaper or online platform) for their policies on republishing old obituaries. You may need permission or have to pay a republication fee.

What if I'm unable to find an existing obituary for my loved one?

If you're having trouble finding an existing obituary, try contacting local libraries, genealogical societies, or historical societies in your area for assistance. They may have access to archived materials or resources that can help you locate the information you're seeking.
