Ladies and Gentlemen, with a heavy heart filled with sorrow, yet brimming with fond memories, we gather here today to say our last goodbyes to a remarkable woman, a loving wife, a caring mother, a doting grandmother, and an exceptional sister-in-law - Kathleen Janine Knight. Janine, as we fondly called her, was truly a beautiful soul that left an indelible mark on each and every person she encountered.

Janine was born to Sydney and May Lewis on January 21, 1964, delivered at the Peninsula Maternity Hospital. As the third eldest amongst siblings Neil, Sharon, Shane, and Valenice, she was almost always known for her maturity, compassion, and a unique sense of insight that was far beyond her years. The family home resided on Adderson Road, in Salt River, before they moved to Heideveld where they lived for 13 years. In 1979, they sought a change of scenery, deciding to plant their roots in Mitchell’s Plain - a place that Janine would call home for the rest of her life.

Her education journey began at Cecil Road Primary in Salt River and later they moved over to Vanguard Drive Primary in Athlone. Janine was always committed to her studies, exhibiting profound dedication, and an unparalleled pursuit of knowledge, intellect, and wisdom.

Upon finishing high school, she ventured into the working world, first at Knitwear, and then moving on to Bibbette. It was during this period of growth and self-discovery that she was introduced to Gavin at the tender age of 26, through Miles and Valenice. Love blossomed into a marriage built on trust, respect, and an enduring bond of friendship. They took their vows on the 22nd Sep 1990 at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, a blessed union which saw the birth of their beloved daughters, Selina and Kayla Lee.

Janine revelled in being a parent, her joy clearly visible in every decision she made for her daughters, always putting their happiness and well-being at the forefront of her priorities. In the later years, she found her greatest source of happiness in her two grandchildren, Mason and Cole. The delight in her eyes and the warmth in her smile whenever she spoke about her grandchildren was unimaginably contagious.

Our Janine was a beacon of strength, a pillar of support, and a sanctuary to many. Her life was replete with acts of kindness and selflessness. She loved deeply and openly, wore her heart on her sleeve, and forgave freely. Her enchanting charm, resilient spirit, and emphatic nature were unparalleled and all who had the joy of knowing her could attest to that.

In sharing these memories, our hope is that we take some comfort in knowing that while Janine may no longer be in our presence, her spirit remains within us. Her infectious laugh, her delightful stories, and the wise words we shared in intimacy, are priceless treasures of a life lived beautifully, courageously and with great love.

We mourn her absence in our lives, yet we can’t help but be grateful for having been part of her exceptional life journey. May Kathleen Janine Knight rest in the peace she so richly deserves. Let us carry her memory in our hearts, for in that way, she will live on – in the stories we tell, in the love we share, and the lives we live.
