Lillian Beckerman - August 27, 1926 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (PHOENIX)
Obituary Preview: Lillian Lenore Davis Beckerman, 97, passed away on April 21, 2024 in Santa Barbara, CA. Lillian was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Sam and Frieda Yumpolsky Davis on August 27, 1926. She grew up and attended high school in Cleveland before travelling the country and returning after the Second World War. It was at table tennis at the Jewish Recreation Council that she met Leo Marvin Beckerman. They married in 1949, and after settling in Canton, Ohio, raised two sons, Ira Carl and Gary Marc.
In the mid-60’s, Lillian and Marv moved cross country to Phoenix, AZ. Upon their arrival, both Lillian and Marv made many new friends and were actively engaged in the larger Jewish Community as a frequent volunteer. She was first and foremost an accomplished homemaker and mother, but also was an skilled comptometer operator and typist. Before, during, and after raising a family with her husband, she worked for numerous companies and was a receptionist for an ophthalmologist, and later, with a psychologist’s group in a hospital setting.
Lillian and Marv loved travelling, both in Europe and New Zealand, and at one point going to England every year for nearly two decades, which included once renting a flat in the Cotswolds for 6 months. She was a passionate and committed culinary artist and worked hard taking many classes to perfect her craft, until finally she found herself giving more pointers to the instructor than she received. She was a good bowler and table tennis player, sports she shared with her husband and children.
It is impossible to adequately describe the love and kindness Lillian freely offered to others, and the care that she demonstrated for the world at large. With a witty and wry sense of humor, coupled with a warm, open, and generous heart, she effortlessly made close and lasting friendships, several of which endure to this very day. She was cherished by many, and will be always remembered as someone who inspired community, cherished family and made deep and lasting heart-connections with those she encountered.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community. They provide an opportunity to honor and celebrate the person's life, and can be a meaningful way to process grief.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary, although it may also be written by a funeral home or other organization. In some cases, the deceased person may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, and surviving family members. It may also include hobbies, interests, achievements, and other personal details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's usually between 100-500 words. The most important thing is to include the essential information and any personal details that help tell the story of the person's life.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to add a personal touch and help readers visualize the person being remembered.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary varies by newspaper, but typically involves contacting the newspaper's obituary department or using their online submission form. Be sure to check their guidelines for length, format, and deadlines.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Absolutely! While it's common to write an obituary shortly after someone passes away, there's no time limit on when you can write one. You may want to consider writing an obituary for a loved one who passed away years ago as a way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review the obituary for spelling, grammar, and factual errors before submitting it. Ask others to review it as well to catch any mistakes you may have missed.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

It's okay to take your time and seek support from others if needed. Consider enlisting the help of a trusted friend or family member to co-write the obituary with you. You can also reach out to a professional writer or counselor for guidance.
