Obituary Preview: Ann M. (Claiborne) Henry, age 95, of Roanoke VA, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2024 at Spring Tree Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was the loving wife of the late Walter P. Henry Sr. of Mount Holly, NJ.
Ann was born in Merchantville New Jersey on March 25, 1928 and was the daughter of the late Abner Claiborne Sr. and Annie Louise McDade. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Eastampton Township New Jersey before moving to Roanoke, Va. She attended St. Philip Lutheran Church in Roanoke, Va. Before retiring, Ann worked in the New Jersey Public school system and public library system. Ann loved watching sports, from football to tennis. She enjoyed reading, dancing, music and was very creative. She loved to work word puzzles. Above all, Ann cherished her family and loved spending time with each member of the family.
Loving mother and grandmother, Ann is survived by her children David Henry and wife Renee Henry, Elizabeth Leonard and husband Steven Leonard; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is remembered today by many other family members. She was preceded in death by her siblings Abner Claiborne Jr., and Betty C. Burnette.
A Funeral Service in celebration of Ann’s life will be held on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Philip Lutheran Church, 8115 Williamson Road, Roanoke, VA 24019 with Rev. David C. Derrick and Rev. Laura Swanson officiating.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father, William Earnest (Ernie) and Irene Goss Colbert, her sister & husband, Wilma and James Cavalucci, and her husband of 60 years, Dr. Henry (Hank) John Sullivan. She is survived by her brother & wife, William (Bill) and Cynthia Colbert, her daughter & husband, Susan and Michael Burnett, her daughter & husband, Kimberly and Michael Murray and her son & wife, Matthew and Beth Sullivan. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christian and Connor Burnett and Rachael Murray.
Born in Pittsburgh PA, she graduated from Bridgeville High School. She worked at Reliable Savings and Loan in Bridgeville PA., married Hank Sullivan and bought a house in Bridgeville where they raised Susan and Kim. Matt was born after the family moved to Huntington WV in 1969. She watched children in her home for teachers at Marshall University and enjoyed the Gourmet Group and her morning bowling group. In 1976, she was an organizer of the mother-daughter bridal fashion show through the Women of the Church at Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church. The family then moved to Roanoke VA in 1978. She enjoyed her bridge groups and spending time with friends and family. She worked for several real estate companies until she retired in 2021. She enjoyed singing in the choir, leading youth group, and was a Deacon and Elder at Salem Presbyterian Church. As we miss her already, we consider her a faithful servant, a devoted wife, a terrific mother, a welcoming friend, a supportive mother-in-law, and a wonderful grandmother.

Diane Taylor Giffin - July 11, 1944 - December 09, 2023

Obituary Preview: Diane Giffin, born on July 11, 1944, in Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada, peacefully passed away on December 9, 2023, at Harmony Memory Care Community in Roanoke, VA, after a courageous battle with Lewy Bodies disease.
Diane was the beloved daughter of Jack and Alice Taylor and is survived by her two children, Rick and wife Reghan Taylor, along with their children Brea and Barrett. She is also survived by her daughter Jessica Miller and her children Makenna and Easton. Diane leaves behind her two sisters, Betty Wilson and Judy Stockburger, both residing in Canada.
On August 15, 1992, Diane married Carl E. Giffin, and for 29 years, they shared a life filled with love, laughter, and purpose. Their union was a testament to finding joy later in life and making the most of every moment.
In addition to her immediate family, Diane was blessed with the love and companionship of 8 stepchildren: Trey Giffin, Mike Giffin, Martha Pearson, Leah Taylor, Tina Giffin-Sweeney, Linda Mclean, and the late Bob and Bill Giffin.
Diane received her education at the University of British Columbia, graduating in 1966, and dedicated her entire professional life to teaching. She began her career excelling at teaching children with special needs before teaching almost every grade from Kindergarten to 12th before retiring from Willow Dale Elementary in PA in 1999. Following her retirement, she embarked on an exciting move to North Carolina, where she spent the majority of her retirement years. Active in the community, she created social groups to connect people, one of the most notable being the "Walkie Talkies" walking group at Cypress Landing and enjoyed playing golf, bridge, and supper clubs.
An avid traveler and lifelong learner, Diane, alongside her friend Sylvia Fermier, authored the book "Where to Go with a Carload of Kids on Less than a Tank of Gas," sharing their adventures and insights for those who yearned to explore but faced financial constraints.
Diane's commitment to making a difference extended to her involvement with local charities, including Safe Homes for Battered Women, Ronald McDonald House, homeless shelters, and the Brown Library in Washington, NC.
Diane's legacy will live on through the lives she touched, the knowledge she shared, and the joy she brought to all who knew her. Sally is survived by her husband of 55 years, Nathan W. Goff; brother, Richard Eatough; nephew, Scott Eatough (Nancy); niece, Diane Eatough.
Sally Anne earned her college degree at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. She worked as an Organist, Piano Teacher, Assistant Music Director, and Minister of Music within various churches where she resided including Florida, New Jersey and Roanoke, VA. She served as an accompanist for the Roanoke Valley Choral Society and substituted for organists in thirty-two Roanoke area churches after retiring from her regular organist position.
Sally was an active member in P.E.O. for over 60 years and she was a member of Second Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at Second Presbyterian Church. The family will speak to guests following the service.
Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, December 4, 2023 in Evergreen Burial Park.

Obituary Preview: Savanah Grace Atkins, 29, of Quinton, Virginia died suddenly on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, along with her girlfriend, Ana Farris.
Savanah graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with triple degrees in Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology. She earned her National Pharmacy Technician Certification while working at CVS Pharmacy in Roanoke. Upon moving back to the Richmond area, she worked as a pharmacy technician at Henrico Doctors Hospital Forest then recently transferred to TriCities Medical Center in Hopewell, VA. Savanah loved animals of all kinds, but cats were always her favorite. One of her ultimate goals in life was to create an animal rescue. One of her favorite games was playing Dungeons and Dragons and often served as the Dungeon Master. Her and Ana loved to do escape rooms together, and successfully cleared most of the rooms in Richmond. Savanah also loved to read anything from high fantasy to contemporary romance with some of her favorites being First Sister and This is How You Lose the Time War.
Those left to cherish her memories are her parents, Kenneth Blake and Anita Atkins of Roanoke, VA; her siblings: Samantha (Rob) Henkel of Cumberland, VA and Kathryn (Joshua) Tracy of Kingman, KS; and Kenneth Brice Atkins of Richmond, VA; her paternal grandparents, Ken and Reba Atkins of Roanoke, VA and her maternal grandparents, William Delano and Nancy McCrickard; and numerous other family members. She is also survived by her 2 cats and dog: Phaedra, Annabelle, and Tater Tot. She was loved dearly by her work colleagues and the many friends she had made through the years.
Family will gladly receive visits at the home of Savanah’s parents: 3621 Bohon Street, NE Roanoke, VA 24012. A celebration of Savanah’s life will be held at Simpson Funeral Home, 3912 Electric Road Roanoke, VA, on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 2 pm with visitation starting at 12 pm prior to service. Rhoda Faye Rankin - July 01, 1937 - October 29, 2023

Obituary Preview: Rhoda Faye Rankin, 86 of Roanoke, VA, passed away on October 29, 2023. Rhoda was born on July 1, 1937 in Park Ridge, NJ to Sylvia Faye Bickford Tuthill and Richard Lovejoy Tuthill. They lived in Manhattan, NY during the war, and then in Lexington, KY for much of her childhood before moving to Durham, NC where she graduated from Durham High School and went
on to attend The Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She married Bruce Hamilton Ballantyne in 1958 and gave birth to one daughter (Shirley Ann Ballantyne) and two sons (Robert Bruce Ballantyne and David Hamilton Ballantyne). They lived in
Charlotte, NC. After divorcing in 1977, she moved back to Lexington, KY. There she became a licensed CNA and worked at The University of Kentucky Medical Center and Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital. In 1983, she married William Franklin Rankin and they remained in Lexington until 2017, when she moved to Roanoke, VA to be near her daughter from
which she finally passed. As for the cause of death, Rhoda suffered from high blood pressure which through the years
resulted in a series of strokes eventually culminating into vascular dementia. Rhoda loved reading science fiction and fantasy, and enjoyed musicals and movies. She was a wonderfully creative artist and was very fond of cats and dragons (because she saw magic, we saw it too). This artist could dance as well as draw and her superior sense of design was expressed in her work as a Physical Therapy assistant where she made upper and lower extremity splints for stroke patients. She was a warm touch in a busy day. She had her father’s blue eyes. When Faye (Rhoda’s mother) died Rhoda took care of the rest of the family. She was a sensitive, perceptive soul with a
sparkling spirit. She is preceded in death by her parents, Sylvia Faye Bickford Tuthill and Richard Lovejoy Tuthill, and husband, William Franklin Rankin. She is survived by her children, Shirley Ann Ballantyne, Roanoke, VA, Robert Bruce Ballantyne (Pam), Youngsville, LA, and David Hamilton Ballantyne (Michelle), Kannapolis, NC, her sister Marcia Tuthill Butterfield (Allan), Manchester, ME, niece Nyasha
Butterfield Grennan, Manchester, ME, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family would like to thank all the caregivers who took part in providing quality care and friendship for Rhoda these last few years. And they also want to thank Carilion Clinic Hospice for
their dedication towards administering solace and support towards Rhoda’s next great adventure. She was loved very much by all, will be dearly missed, but fondly and joyfully remembered. In addition to her husband of 56 years she was preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe and Ruth Crawford Williams.
Mabel was known for her gift of singing and playing piano. She took joy in sharing it with others throughout her life. Mabel sang with many groups including the Gospel Tones Quartet, the Fellowship Trio, The Ambassadors, and Glory Bound. Each were a blessing in her life and shared her passion to share God’s love through music.
She will be missed and remembered by her daughter, Angela Elmore Collins (Mike); granddaughters, Megan Fischer (Jeff), Miranda Collins and great granddaughter Alexandra (Lexi) Fischer; siblings, Bill Williams (Linda), Alfred Williams (Laura Ann); nieces, Heather Williams, Holly Martin (Scott), Tammy Williams, Janet Humphreys (Fred).
A service to honor and celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023 in the Chapel of Simpson Funeral Home, 3912 Electric Road with Pastor Bryan Ratcliff and Pastor Terry Nester officiating. Interment will follow the service at Orchard Cemetery in Ballard, WV. The family will receive friends from 4pm to 6 pm on Friday, October 20, 2023 at the funeral home.

Kurt spent most of his career as a Roanoke County Firefighter and EMS and retired in 2014. Kurt was preceded in death by his mother, Maxine Ferrell Kipley, his father Robert Author Kipley and his brother David Kipley. Kurt is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Michele Kipley. Kurt is also survived by his three children- Paul Kipley Jr., John Kipley, Laura Foose (Christopher), and stepdaughter Alexis Bennett (Jed) and his grandchildren Rayna, Bradley, Cole, Gavin, Colton, Jovi, Lennox, and Julia. Kurt loved woodworking, playing the guitar and mandolin. There wasn’t a song from the 70’s that Kurt didn’t know the artist and lyrics. Kurt was very attached to his two fur babies- Thumper and Sugar. Kurt loved to make everyone laugh, especially his wife.

Obituary Preview: Jack Valentine Stepniak, age 80, passed away peacefully with family by his side on September 8th, 2023 at Roanoke memorial hospital. His celebration of life will be held on the first day of fall –his favorite season – September 23rd, 2023 at Simpson Funeral Home in Roanoke, Va, from 3 to 5 pm. The service will be live streamed for his family and friends that are unable to attend. The link can be found on the Simpson Funeral Home website.
Jack was born December 25th 1942 in Hop Bottom, PA. He attended high school at St. Mary’s in Phoenix, Arizona. Jack also received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1961. He then returned to PA where he enrolled in Keystone Junior College, while simultaneously working at Stepniak Beef - a family business established by his grandfather in 1913, which continues to serve his hometown and surrounding areas. Jack began his family in Montrose, Pennsylvania, and later relocated to Binghamton, New York. Here he worked at Kroehler Furniture Manufacturing as an assembly worker. He was then hired by Anitec, INC. as a certified health and safety operator and licensed asbestos abatement officer. Later he applied these skills and credentials to serve as a certified commercial roofing technician, where he serviced the entire east coast of the United States for several years. After remarrying in 1986, Jack and his family moved to Roanoke in 1996, where he continued commercial roofing until retiring as a foreman from Roanoke Roofing and Sheet Metal.
In retirement, Jack put all of his efforts into making sure his family and friends would have countless memories with him that could supersede the boundaries of time. He especially loved lounging in the pool with a cold beer, watching his grandchildren gleefully explore the world around them. He’d often sit with his daughters laughing and reminiscing about days passed and encouraging them to always believe in a brighter, more magical future. The thing he was best at was making sure others knew how much he loved them. He was fearless, and full of love and life, which is the legacy he expects his family to carry on, and they will.
Jack is survived by his three daughters; Darcy Stepniak (Binghamton, N.Y.), Brittany Stepniak and husband, Jared Beers (Glenn Arm M.D.), Bethany Stepniak (Roanoke, V.A.), and son Christopher Stepniak and wife, Jessica (Salem, V.A.). His former wife, Tina Stepniak (Roanoke, V.A.). One brother, Thomas Stepniak and wife, Faye, along with their children and grandchildren (Palm Coast, F.L.). His most recent pride and joy are his two grandchildren, Jackson (age 4) who carries his name, and Annabelle (age 11 months) of Glen Arm, MD. A cousin, Bill Stepniak and wife, Beverly (Hop Bottom, P.A.). As well as many friends that became family, too.
Jack is preceded in death by his beloved grandmother Stella Kuroski, parents John and Anna Stepniak, and eldest daughter Dara Russell (11/28/21).

Obituary Preview: Ronnie was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 22, 1956 to the late Robert G. and Judith E. Lingblom. The family moved to Roanoke, Virginia, in the late sixties where Ronnie attended Cave Spring High School. He worked for the family-owned business, Jumbo Pizza & Subs/ The Squeeze Inn, for a short period of time and then joined and served in the US Navy.
Ronnie enjoyed traveling thru out the United States where he met and made friends due to his great personality, warm smile and genuine love of people. He loved sports especially the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. Ronnie’s love of the game of baseball made him decide to coach little league for a time. He also loved his music, he played the drums, bongos, congas, and harmonica. He was also a talented artist who loved painting and woodworking.
Ronnie had just recently been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer that took his life within three weeks. He died at home surrounded by his fiancé Kathleen Malone, and sister in love, Donna Smith. Also left to cherish his memory are his son Ronnie Jr.; granddaughter, Quinnci; Kathleen’s son, John; his brothers, Robert and Richard Lingblom; his sister and brother-in-law, Christine and Pete Spoto; brother and sister in love, Donna and Roger Smith. Also surviving Ronnie is half-sister Merissa Dehaven and husband Howard. Ronnie also leaves behind his Woburn, Massachusetts family Auntie Jeanne, Marie, Deanne, Jack, Julie, and Vanessa Lingblom; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Ronnie:” As well as his constant companion and furbaby Bentley.

Swaine, she will be missed and remembered by her daughter, Summer Swaine and her pet “Reese”; son, Calvin Swaine and his wife Stephanie; siblings, Bobby Neal and his wife Nora, Ricky Cale, Mark Cale, Tammy Tasler and her husband Bill, Sharon Wright, and Sherry Lee; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends including the entire Swaine family; her cat, “Gracie”; special friend, Ruth Anthony.

Charlie was born December 13, 1935 in Monterey, Virginia to Daisy Enid (Hull) and Charles R. Harold, Sr. After graduating from Highland High School, Charlie worked as an electrical engineer in Northern Virginia and eventually settled in Fredericksburg, Virginia where he and his wife, Jeanne raised their three daughters. He retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia after 27 years of service in 1994. Always a country boy at heart, Charlie loved bluegrass and classical music and was an avid gardener. He would often return with his family to Highland County for visits and to give his girls an appreciation of the mountains and country life. He was also a talented furniture restorer and woodworker. Charlie was a faithful man who loved the Lord, his family, and his many friends from church, work and the community.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Lee Glen Harold, Warren "Mike" Gray Herold, Jack Hull Herold; his sisters, Margaret Ann Rexrode, Mamie Kale Eagle, Alma Jean Harmon, Ellen Sue Puffenbarger; and his oldest daughter, Vonda Kaye Heflin.
He is survived by his daughters, Christie "Enid" Glancy and Karai Janel Simpson along with five grandchildren, Ashley Nicole Meyers, Greyson Lee Harold, Hollis Paige Glancy, Julian Asher Simpson and Charlize Vonne "Charlie" Simpson.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11am on Monday, August 21, 2023 at Monterey Cemetery followed by refreshments at the Blue Grass Ruritan Club.
