Gladalon Gwyn Snowwhite - August 24, 1941 - September 03, 2023

Departed: 09/03/2023 (Elgin)
Obituary Preview: Peacefully and surrounded by family, Gladalon Gwyn Snowwhite, 82, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2023. Gwyn was born in Marlin, Texas on August 24, 1941. She was the proud daughter of John George Jr. and Gladys Chrystelle Snowwhite. She was the older sister to three brothers but best known as “Aunt Gwyn” to her over 30 nieces and nephews.
Gwyn studied education, reading, and learning disabilities at Southern Illinois University and DePaul University. Gwyn began and ended her career in U-46. Most of it was spent teaching developmental first grade at Harriet Gifford Elementary School. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa and the Elgin Area Retired Teachers Association.
Gwyn was a collector of many things; postcards, stamps, coins, Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments, and anything and everything “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” She loved Jelly Beans, especially the black ones. Gwyn was a big movie buff and loved reading “Cat in the Stacks” mysteries. She could make anything out of origami. Gwyn always had a camera in hand and a story to tell with exceptional detail.
However, Gwyn’s greatest joy was her family. She loved them fiercely and made sure they knew it. She never married or had children but instead treated her many nieces and nephews as if they were her own. They look back fondly on their memories with Aunt Gwyn. From teaching them to crochet, sneaking them candy during recess at Hillcrest Elementary, sharing her love of reading with them, Sundays at the movies each weekend and everything in between. For the kids, a trip to Aunt Gwyn’s house was a trip to the toy store as she was always a child at heart and had many toys to play with. Gwyn loved nothing more than having the entire Snowwhite family together for an extended period of time. She treated them to wonderful vacations together; cruises, Disney World, and more, giving them the experiences and memories of a lifetime.
Her family will miss annual birthday calls from Aunt Gwyn singing “Happy Birthday” in full, racing to beat her to “Christmas Eve Gift” each year, even if it meant calling at 2 AM, long, detailed stories of memories long ago, and knowing not to stray far from the phone after Aunt Gwyn called. Without fail, she’d be calling right back within seconds to share one last thing with you.
Gwyn bravely fought cancer since being diagnosed in 2017. She never once lost her spunk despite the challenges she faced. In her final hours, Gwyn spoke of a new beginning. Her family finds comfort in this along with Gwyn reuniting with her mother and father, her youngest brother, Paul Sr., and her nephew, David.
Gwyn is survived by her family, who she wishes each to be named. Her younger brothers, John III and David (Gail), and sisters-in-law Cathy and Bonnie (Mark). Her nieces and nephews: Jenifer, John IV, Wende (Sean), Paul (Rose), Ben, Sara and Danny (Erin). Her great nieces and nephews: Johnathan, Amanda (Leon), Mackenzie, Brittany (Javi), Hayley, Megan, Emilie (Clayton), Katie, Collin, Isabella, Allie, Eryn, Stella, and Mikayla and her great-great nieces and nephews: Malaya, Charlie, Josie, Cleo, Ruth, Eden, Lulu, Morrison, Whitley, Willow and Rosemarie.
The Snowwhite Family would like to thank Dr. Manjunath of Illinois Cancer Specialists, JourneyCare Hospice, and Louise with Arden Rose Home Care for the care they provided Gwyn. As well as Gwyn’s niece, Jenifer, who selflessly served as Gwyn’s caregiver for the past 6 years.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations can be made in Gwyn’s name to the Addus Hope Foundation (JourneyCare). Gwyn will be missed greatly by all who knew her. Inside and out, she will always be “the fairest of them all.”
