Reverend Arthur Lenwood Williams Jr - November 08, 1940 - May 13, 2024

Departed: 05/13/2024 (North Charleston)
Obituary Preview: The Reverend Arthur Lenwood Williams, Jr. (Fr. Len) went peacefully into his eternal rest on May 13, 2024, surrounded by loving family and friends. Len was born in Charleston, SC on November 8, 1940, to Arthur and Belva Williams. He graduated from Moultrie High School and Wofford College. He pursued graduate studies at the Citadel while teaching for the Charleston County School District. He received his Master of Divinity degree from the Episcopal Theological seminary in Kentucky. After teaching high school, he worked as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Abbott Laboratories. It was during this time of his life that he strongly received the calling to the priesthood. He served parishes in Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina, and to all the world, as chaplain to the seafarers in the port of Charleston with the Charleston Port and Seafarers Society ministry.
The times in his ordained ministry that meant so much to him were serving as chaplain to Camp Bratton Green in the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi in their special needs children’s program. Early in his ministry he served as vicar of a struggling mission church in Mississippi. Due to the support and commitment of the St. Timothy’s congregation, the church was relocated to a new site in Southaven, MS where a beautiful church structure, including a family life center was constructed and soon grew into a full fledged and thriving parish.
In his retirement, Len took tremendous pride in being part of the Seafarers ministry. He served as chaplain to the Port of Charleston with a core of devoted volunteers, providing for the spiritual and physical needs of the seafarers who visited Charleston from around the world, without regard to race, ethnicity, politics, or religion. In this role he also participated in the Mt. Pleasant Blessing of the Fleet for seventeen years. He also served as chaplain to the mission team for the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina in the Dominican Republic. Throughout his career Len served on several boards in Mississippi. Among his many awards was Chaplain of the Year by the North American Maritime Ministry Association, Volunteer of the Year by the town of Mt. Pleasant, Maritime Person of the Year by the Propeller Club of Charleston. The seafarers’ center on the Hugh Leatherman Port Terminal was also kindly named for Fr. Len.
Fr. Len is survived by his wife Angela, sons, Alex Williams (Jennifer), Christopher Williams, daughter, Victoria Dyess (Jeremy), stepdaughter Meagan Raney, grandchildren, McKenzie and Preston Dyess, Jackson and Lander Williams, his sister, Marlene Seaborn, nieces Mary Lynn Howard (Troy), nephew Charles Holder, nephew Wayne Holder (Sheila) and niece Lauren Seaborn. Len was predeceased by his parents, first wife Deborah, sister Mary Ann Holder, brother-in-law Charles Holder, and brother-in-law Robert Seaborn.
Fr. Len’s celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 11:00am at Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street in Charleston with a reception immediately following in the church’s Hanahan Hall. Interment will be private and at a later date.

years. Born May 23, 1949, in Bayonne, NJ, Dennis was the only son of the late Edward Maksimowitz and the late Helen Rapczynski Maksimowitz. Dennis was raised in Edison, NJ, where at a young age he developed a strong work ethic, running his own newspaper route and doing odd jobs at the local deli down the street from his home at 12 years old. Dennis attended Our Lady of Peace grammar school, Fords, NJ, and graduated
from St. Joseph’s High School, Metuchen, NJ, where he excelled in track & field, specializing in the pole vault. He and his friends spent a lot of time at the beach, surfing, and playing pickup basketball. He later studied at
both the University of Maryland and Rutgers University. In his early twenties Dennis began working for New Jersey Bell, which commenced a long, successful
Management career in the Telecommunications industry that included tenures at Bell Atlantic and Verizon.
One of his major accomplishments was helping lead the commercial launch of Caller ID in the late 1980’s. He was fortunate to retire from Verizon at the young age of 51. Soon after, Dennis led the business side of Denise’s successful interior architecture and design business they created, DenMak Design, which they still
dabbled in for close clients and friends up until his death. Along with his wife Denise, Dennis leaves behind his two children, daughter Lisa Maksimowitz Fuller(Michael), of Mt. Pleasant, SC and son Matthew Maksimowitz(Andrea), of Mt. Pleasant, SC, five cherished grandchildren- Taylor, Emma, Miles, Marin, and Owen, and his two adored great grandsons- Read and John. He also leaves behind his two younger sisters, Denise Montgomery(Tom) and Ellen Held(Lucas), his first wife, mother of his children, and lifelong friend Linda Allen, and countless friends and cousins who he remained close with throughout his life. Dennis was pre-deceased by his parents and his older sister
Bernice Maksimowitz, and his favorite Aunt, Nellie Matlosz, who he thought of as a second mom. Dennis’ family was far and away his pride and joy. He did everything he could to love, support, and counsel them, and savored their successes and happiness. He was known not only to his entire family, but to friends far and wide as an incredible mentor who imparted sound advice and wisdom. If you came to him with an idea, he would pick it apart, ask countless questions, and whether you liked it or not, would raise all the possibilities of what could possibly go wrong. He opened his home to friends who did not have family to be with on holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter, and it was there those guests saw the beauty of
family and love he helped create. Dennis loved both preparing and eating great food, the family traditions of Italian Christmas and Polish Easter his two favorites. He was a voracious reader, often reading 2 or 3 different newspapers each day, and he loved books, especially those about history and World War II. He was an avid skier for many decades and earned his black belt in Karate at 40 years of age. He enjoyed playing cards with friends and family, watching golf, and was an avid car enthusiast, his 1971 Pontiac GTO convertible probably his all-time favorite ride. He had a profound respect for the U.S. military, gave generously to a multitude of charities, and was extremely proud of his Polish and Russian heritage as well as his adopted Italian heritage thru his wife. More than anything, he and Denise loved to travel, having taken countless trips to Europe, the highlight their numerous six week voyages eating their way through their favorite country of Italy. Dennis was a devout Catholic who
had a close relationship with God.

A few years later Ruth got a second black standard poodle, “Harry Two” (she also named him Harry—easier to remember!).
In 1986 at the age of 53, Ruth hiked the entire 2,190-mile Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Mt. Katahdin, Maine. The trek took five months. She was known as Golden Oldie on the trail and earned the title of “through-hiker” having completed the trail continuously from start to finish in a single season. Upon her return to Connecticut, she was interviewed, and an article published in the local newspaper. Then in 1990 at the age of 57, Ruth flew with her bicycle to Oregon and rode 4,250 miles across the country via the Transamerica Bicycle Trail to Virginia in approximately two and a half months. This adventure earned her another interview and a second article published in the local newspaper.
After Ruth’s retirement, she and Howard began annual trips to Florida as “snowbirds”. They spent the winter months on Pine Island and eventually built a new house and relocated to Cape Coral, Florida, full time in 2005.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Howard; her parents, Melford and Gina Norby; and her sister, May Louise Norby. She is survived by her son, Howard (Lany) Pfeifer, of South Glastonbury, Connecticut; her daughter, Helen Pfeifer, of Cape Coral, Florida; and her daughter, Mary (Bruce) Cyr, of Charleston, South Carolina.

During our childhood, my older sister, Christine, aka Tina and I loved playing games like marbles, and running around the yard entertaining ourselves. I was also a bookworm. I especially enjoyed reading comic books.
I moved to Long Island, New York with several friends in the early 1960s. We all eventually worked at Jamaica Ash (formerly Westbury Paper Stock). Our family time included trips to amusement parks, the beach and of course road trips to visit family in South Carolina and Virginia. We enjoyed going to wrestling matches and watching now classic television shows including the Six Million Dollar Man and Kung Fu. I also taught my kids how to ride a bike and how to drive.
As members of a van club, Mary and I took several camping trips to many states.
After moving permanently to South Carolina, I continued to keep busy working full-time as a truck driver at Port City Concrete. I also served on staff at Ashley Missionary Baptist Church.
