Norman Copas - July 12, 1942 - April 14, 2024

Departed: 04/14/2024 (Lafayette)
Obituary Preview: Norman Franklin Copas, 81, of Lafayette, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, April 14, 2024, with family at his side at St. Mary Healthcare Center. Norm was born on July 12, 1942, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lafayette, the youngest of 12 children born to the late Amo Lee and Myrtle (Sturgeon) Copas.
After many years of tenant farming in Tippecanoe, Benton and Warren County communities like Oxford, Otterbein, Pine Village, Independence and Shadeland, the family settled in an old farmstead they purchased just south of Montmorenci early in Norm’s childhood. He attended Montmorenci School from first grade, and like his brothers, took an active part in the school’s sports teams. After his father died in a traffic accident in June 1956, Norm completed the fall semester of his ninth-grade year at Montmorenci, but, with his other siblings grown and building their own lives and families, his mother sold the farm and moved with Norman into town in Lafayette.
Norm enrolled at Lafayette Jefferson High School in January 1957, and upon graduating in 1960, he had also earned two varsity baseball letters playing second base, with his senior year coinciding with Paul “Spider” Fields’ first year as head coach. Norm also played for the American Legion Post 11 team during the summer of 1960, facing, among others, Terre Haute and reconstructive surgery’s own Tommy John. In the fall of 1960, Norm enrolled at Purdue University, where he survived both his first swimming lesson and his initial enrollment in the engineering school, persevering to become the first of his family to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in June 1965.
The pace of the young graduate’s life accelerated quickly. On July 14, 1965, Norm met the love of his life, Linda Lillian Ulrich, when the two were visiting friends with neighboring cottages at Lake Freeman. The couple were married at Christ United Methodist Church in Lafayette on April 2, 1966, with best man Tom Whiteley remaining one several lifelong friends.
Hired as an eighth-grade English teacher by assistant school superintendent Marion Crawley, Norm began teaching at Sunnyside Middle School in 1966, hardly expecting to educate more than 3,000 students during a 32-year tenure at the school. He completed his Master’s degree in education from Ball State University in 1969, with studies bookended by the birth of his and Linda’s two sons, Kyle (1967) and Casey (1969). Before retiring from teaching in 1998, Norm coached numerous eighth- and ninth-grade football teams at Sunnyside alongside John McGonigal, Todd Snider, Denny Conner and others, winning several West Central Junior Conference titles along the way. For 19 years, he also served as Sunnyside’s athletic director, ensuring that coaches were hired, games scheduled, teams equipped and dressed, busses dispatched, gates opened, tickets sold, popcorn popped, scorebooks filled, and referees paid.
Norm coached summer baseball for many years, focused on repetition and mastery of technical skills like fielding footwork and lining up cut-off men. He often ended practices with a competition that tasked players with dropping bunts down the first- and third-base lines to see who could deposit the most into a reclining ten-gallon bucket or ice-cream container. Norm and Linda were both active supporters of in the Murdock Park baseball booster club for many years, with Norm served as commissioner for most of the 1980s.
Norman was active in the Tippecanoe County Conservation Club, and he enjoyed following sports, attending auctions and antiquing with Linda, and preserving the old house on the corner of North 23rd and Cason that they made the family home for 44 of their 58 years together. He was also a voracious reader and, especially after his retirement, could generally be found with a book on the house’s front porch swing.
In addition to his wife, Linda Copas, Norman is survived by his sons, Kyle (Tish Riley) of Copenhagen, and Casey (Edie) Copas of Lebanon; sister, Sue Logan of San Angelo, Texas; and grandchildren Elise Copas of Dublin, Addison Copas of Edinburgh, Benjamin Copas of George Mason University, Drew Copas of Renssalaer, and Drew’s mother, Teresa Sult. Norm was preceded in death by his parents and the remaining ten of his siblings Helen McBeath (John), Marivene “Bean” Rasmussen (George), Cecil (Mary Louise), Junior, Vivian “Toots” Yarnal (Charles), Vera “Teet” Nelson (Ed), Melvin “Bud” (Betty), Chuck (Lavonne), Don (Jean), and Steve (Jan).
