Frederick Eberling - February 21, 1944 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Hampton)
Obituary Preview: Frederick Louis Eberling, of Sheffield, passed away suddenly at the Belmond Medical Center at 3:51pm on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at the age of 80. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2024 at Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church in Mason City with burial in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery in rural Sheffield. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at the Sietsema-Atkinson Funeral Home in Hampton.
Fred Eberling was born on February 21, 1944, in Postville, IA and was the third child of 11 born to Verni and Loretta (Schlee) Eberling. Fred’s parents moved from Postville to many communities, but he claimed Rockford, IA as his hometown.
Fred was united in marriage with Edna Dannen at Zion Reformed Church on August 9, 1968. They celebrated 47 years of married life and had 3 children, thirteen grandchildren, and one honorary grandchild. Fred and Edna also hosted 9 foreign exchange students from all over the world.
Fred was stricken down with a disabling case of polio at the young age of 14, but he didn’t let that hurdle stand in his way of having a very productive life. During his teen years he worked on the family farm and for various other farmers. He and his brother-in-law Don Ballhagen did a lot of custom baling for additional income. Later, Fred worked for Kenny Collins doing elevator work and fearlessly swung 60 feet above the ground. Davies Manufacturing in Hampton, IA was his next career stop. In 1970 Fred began his 19-year tenure at Sukup Manufacturing and advanced to the head of the gearmotor department before Post-Polio Syndrome forced him into retirement. In the 1980’s Fred and Corey also enjoyed erecting shiny new grain bins and installing grain bin floors across North Iowa.
Fred loved tinkering in his garage doing woodworking, metal working, and mechanic work. It brought great joy to him whenever he got the chance to share these loves and knowledge with his grandsons Ty and Cayde. He also shared his passion with them for classic cars and old tractors. Fred loved to show off his cooking skills and taught his granddaughters Alyssa and Lindsey his trade and later loved seeing them prepare meals for family gatherings. He found great joy when he got to spend time with his grandkids Alyssa, Ty, Lindsey, and Cayde. And they also cherished that time and the skills he taught them.
Fred also loved farming. In 1976 he began working for Gene Riles. Who knew that this working relationship would foster almost a 50-year friendship. This happened even though Fred was always breaking down Gene’s equipment. So was the joke between them. Most of the time it was just the fact that it was IH red. They took many vacations together and Gene and Caroline expanded Fred’s knowledge of the world.
Fred is survived by his son Corey (Amy) Eberling of Sheffield, IA and their children Alyssa (fiancée Nels), Ty, Lindsey, and Cayde; daughter Jodi Koesnter of Webster City, IA and her children Taylor, Colton, Zach, Dylan, and McKinzey; and son Troy (Veronica) Eberling of Vinton, IA and their children Sara (Trevor) Ginapp, Katelyn, and Jessica; honorary daughter Mayumi (Matt) Chitwood of and their daughter Milla; sister Gloria Holthaus; sister Cheryl (Dave) Warner; sister Susan (Bennie) Owen; brother Roger (Sandy) Eberling; sister Patricia (Terrell) Tribble; in-laws Judy Dannen, Helen Scarrow, Esther Meyer, Mary Busma, Ed (Linda) Dannen.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Edna, grandson Gage Koestner, son-in-law Mitch Koestner, brother Gary; sisters Jolene, Judith Donahue, Nancy, and Diana Ballhagen; brothers-in-law Don Ballhagen, Paul Dannen, David Dannen, Harvin Meyer, and Les Holthaus.
