Obituary Preview: Clarkey Smith Perkins, age 66, passed away on Wednesday at the Crystal Coast Hospice Center in Newport. Born in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Harris Smith and the late Catherine Smith. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Pete Smith and her sister, Kaye Thompson. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Goldsboro.
A service to celebrate Clarkey’s life will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Glenn Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. The family will greet friends on Saturday one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
Clarkey is survived by her husband, Berky Perkins; her daughters, Jennifer & Eric Howell, and Jessy Seabrooks; her grandchildren, Taylor Howell, Walker Howell, Olivia Seabrooks and Lexi Seabrooks; and her faithful canine companion, Izzy.

Obituary Preview: George J. Wiggs, age 76, passed away Wednesday at Wayne/UNC Health Care. Born in Wayne County, NC, he was the son of the late George W. and Beulah Merritt Wiggs.  George was a retired Veteran with the United States Army and was previously employed with Wayne Oil Company.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 23, 2022, 2:00 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home Chapel in Goldsboro, NC.  Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. A time of visitation will be held Saturday from 12:30 to 1:45 pm at the funeral home.
George is survived by his wife, Jackie Wells Wiggs; his daughters, Pamela Sue Teachey and Kimberly Jo Barton; his son, Thomas Glenn Wiggs; his brother, James Franklin Wiggs; his sister, Sheila Ann Foster; grandchildren, Erin, Preston, T.J., Hunter, Ava, Bryson, Harper, Ivy and Ameilia; great grandchildren, Charlie Mae, Caitlyn and Callum.

Joseph Harold Gurley - October 16, 1935 - April 14, 2022

Obituary Preview: Joseph Harold Gurley, age 86, went home to be with the Lord while a resident at NC State Veterans Home in Kinston. A lifelong resident of Wayne County, he was born to the late Joseph Edgar Gurley and the late Gela Gurley in the Nahunta Community. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rose Gurley, his brother, Edmond Gurley,  his daughter in law, Cindy Gurley, his son in law, Sam Baker and a brother-in-law, Clement Thompson. In 1962, he accepted Christ as his Savior and was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church, where he served faithfully for many years in various roles.
Harold was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict. He had a great love for our country and at times as he shared memories of his service days would become emotional just thinking back to those times of war. In earlier years, Harold was a Safety Manager for Stackhouse, Inc. and then became a well-known insurance salesman.
Harold loved his family dearly and always enjoyed spending time with them every chance he had. He especially loved being “PaPa” to his grandchildren who added so much joy to his life. He had a very special place in his heart for his devoted dear wife, Dorothy and for his children.
He looked forward to special  times shared with friends at various restaurants just enjoying the time and fellowship together.
A service to celebrate Harold’s life will be held on Monday at 1:00 pm at Faith Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Christian Powell and Rev. Dann Patrick officiating.  The family will greet friends Monday from 11:30 am until 1:00 pm at the church. Burial with military honors will follow in  Evergreen Cemetery.
Harold is survived by his wife, Dorothy Britt Gurley; a son, Jeff Gurley and his children, Mary Catherine (Bryan) Talton and their daughter, Ella Rose Talton; Nicholas Todd (Madison) Gurley and their children, Eleanor, Gibson and Callahan Gurley; Joseph Gurley and his son, J.L. Gurley; his daughters, Mitzi Hansley and her husband, David,  and their children, Derrick (Jessica) Hansley and their daughter, Emory; Ken (Jennifer) Hansley and their children, Drake and Luci Hansley; Kesha Gooding and her daughter, Ardin (Ryland and Easton); and Michael Hansley and his daughter, Michelle; and Suzie Baker and her children, Cole (MaKayla) Baker and their daughter Kyndall Baker; and Cale Baker; his brothers, Woodard “Woody” Gurley and his wife, Ruby, and Walter Gurley; his sister, Melva Jean Thompson.

A graveside service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. at the family cemetery, 1353 Corbett Hill Road, Mt. Olive, NC with Rev. Clay Worrell and Rev. Tom Martin officiating. The family will visit with family and friends following the service at the cemetery.

A Graveside service to celebrate his life will be held Monday, April 11, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. at the Oak Grove Friends Cemetery on the Hollowell Family Farm, 2493 Stevens Mill Road, Goldsboro, NC. A visitation for family and friends will be held Sunday, April 10, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Along with his mother, Tim is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carolyn Hinkle Wice; his sons, Jeff Wice (Brooke) and Andy Wice (Crystal); his grandchildren, Gavin Wice and Josie Wice; his brother, Bob Wice (Billie); his sister, Lee Joyner (Ricky); his father-in-law, Dorse Hinkle; his lifetime best friend, Robbie Pelletier.

Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late  James Carson Davis and Roselean Blackburn Davis. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Jerry Davis and Jeff Davis. “J.C.” was a member of the Goldsboro Elks Lodge #139 and was affectionately known as the Mayor of Center Street.

Obituary Preview: Virginia Carolyn King, 71, of Goldsboro passed away Saturday at Wayne UNC Health Care. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Mallie Brock and was married to Kenneth King. She was a home maker for her family and enjoyed going fishing, trips to the mountains on vacation, and watching her children and grandchildren play sports. Mrs. King was a very dependable person.
A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday at 6:00 P.M. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Rev. Andrew Price officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. The family asks that everyone wear bright colors in Mrs. Kings memory.

John Collins Chase - June 10, 1953 - April 01, 2022

Obituary Preview: John Collins Chase, 68, of Dudley, North Carolina passed away April 1, 2022 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, NC. He was born in 1953 to Everett and Lila Chase in Kentucky as the first son after seven daughters.
John grew up in the Louisville area and graduated from Seneca High School in 1972 and shortly thereafter decided to join the military. He served in the Air Force from 1973 until his retirement in 1994. After his service, he drove for Kenan Transport hauling fuel along the east coast.
John enjoyed cooking for his family and friends and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed fishing, a good game of golf as well as a good joke. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to everyone.
John is survived by his wife of 33 years, Dianna Chase; son, William Kohls II of Dudley, NC; daughter, KaSondra Worley and husband Joseph of Princeton, NC; daughter Shandara Chase and Michael Mangum of DeFuniak Springs, FL; son, Brian Kohls of Dudley, NC; son John Chase II, of Dudley, NC; eight grandchildren: William Kohls III, Tyler Kohls, Christopher Chase, Brian Kohls II, Jacob Worley, Conner Chase, Cayden Chase, and Joshua Worley; sisters Cheryl Bowling of Louisville KY, and Patty Schnurr of Louisville, Ky and younger brother Louis Chase of Louisville KY;  and many loving nieces and nephews and relatives.
John is preceded in death by his parents Everett and Lila Chase, sisters Helen Ahlhaus, Jane Ahlhaus, Margaret Mary Zehnder, Lila Buchenberger, and Joan Lee; and son, Timothy John Chase.

Obituary Preview: Dolores Marie Miller, 81, of Pikeville, NC, died Friday April 1, 2022 at Wayne-UNC Health Care in Goldsboro, NC.  She was born in Buffalo, NY to the Late Edward Michalski and Florence Michalsaki. In addition to her parents Ms. Miller was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Miller; also her siblings, Lorine Hoffman and Norman Michalski.
Ms. Miller enjoyed attending events at the Wayne County Senior Center. She retired from Felexo Transparent as a machinist. She is survived by her Daughters- Donna Evens, of Goldsboro, NC,  Debra Schneider of Fuquay Varina and Dawn Scott of New York. Brother- Daniel Michalski of Florida.  Also surviving is Seven Grandchildren and seven Great-grandchildren

Clark Colbert Harrell - March 04, 1944 - March 31, 2022

Obituary Preview: Clark Colbert Harrell, 78, of Mt. Olive passed away Thursday morning at home. He is the son of the late Milford and Ruth Kornegay Harrell and was the husband of Hilda T. Harrell. Clark was a member of Thunder Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church serving as the current treasurer. He loved old cars especially Fords.  Along with his love for cars, Clark was a racing fan. He also enjoyed spending time with his children or talking about them. Clark spent many years selling Ford cars and trucks. Friday was his favorite day of the week because the old guys would meet for lunch. When Clark went out you would often see him in his favorite Hawaiian shirt.
A service to celebrate Clark's life will be held at Thunder Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church Sunday at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Jimmy Whitfield officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
In addition to his wife of 37 years, Clark is survived by his sons, Clark Harrell Jr. of Charlotte, Bryan Harrell and wife Stephanie of Kinston, and Brandon Harrell of Grifton; a sister Betty Yount and husband Dr. William Yount of Durham; grandchildren, Allana Caufield, Clark Harrell III, Brent Harrell, Dylan Harrell, Faith Harrell, Olivia Harrell, and Brooks Harrell; his lunch buddies, Butch Parker, Jimmy Jones, Don Holland, Reggie Hines, and Dwight Lockamy; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mattie Thelma McPherson - July 23, 1933 - March 31, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mattie Thelma McPherson, age 88, passed away Thursday in High Point, North Carolina. Formerly of Dudley, NC, she was the daughter of the late Blanie and Maggie Copper Williams and sister of the late Agnes C. McCray, Annie L. Collins and Curtis T. Williams. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Larry G. Lincoln III and a cousin, Lula “Sis” Cutler. She graduated from Fredrick Douglas High School in Elm City, NC, class of 1953, and went on to receive her nursing degree from Edgecombe Technical College in Rocky Mount, NC. Following her graduation, she worked as a Registered Nurse at the Veteran Affairs (VA) hospitals in Richmond, VA and Durham, NC and at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro, NC until her retirement. Ms. McPherson received the Supervisor Appreciation Award in 1983 for her understanding and dedication to both her personnel and the patients. She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and attended Korean American Presbyterian Church of Greensboro. Mattie Thelma was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Lady Love Chapter 6.
Thelma was an avid traveler, visiting many places throughout the United States and abroad. She made special trips to visit wherever her children, Wesley and Sharon, were stationed such as Germany, Hawaii, Korea, and the Philippines. Education was very important to her, she attended as many family graduations and school events as she could and would send her support when she could not be there in person. Mattie T. was also a wonderful cook and demonstrated her talents often, especially on New Year’s Day. Gardening was another one of Mattie’s hobbies, you could always find her outside on a beautiful spring day. Affectionately called “Moot” or “Nana” by her loved ones, she was one of the family historians, remembering names, birthdays, and odd facts about everyone. In addition, she collected pictures of every family member and displayed them lovingly in her home.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 11:00am at Wayne Memorial Park with Rev Wonford Galmon. Mattie Thelma will lie in state at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 from 9:00am until 4:00pm with the family being present from 1:00 until 2:00pm. Mattie Thelma is survived by her son, A. Wesley McPherson and his wife, Sun, her daughter, Sharon H. Lincoln and her husband, Larry G. Lincoln, Jr.; her brothers, H. Ray Williams (Glenda), Luther O. Williams (Connie), Willie R. Williams (Venzella), Jake D. Williams, and Larry D. Williams (Erma); her sisters, Mary L. Pointer (James), Linda F. Williams, and Shirley T. Gardner; her grandchildren, Lionel G. Lincoln, Larraine G. Dunwoody (Pierce), Annie J. McPherson, Jonathan W. McPherson, S. Nikki Rimel (Chris), Ho Young

Diane was a retired machine operator from AP Parts and was also a former member of the Arrington Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
A service to celebrate Diane’s life will be held Wednesday at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home. A committal service will follow the funeral at Wayne Memorial Park.
She is survived by her children, Richard D. Camden, John Camden, Loyd Camden and wife, Dawn, and Lorilee C. West all of Dudley, and Lewis Camden of Maui; a daughter in law, Debbie Raynor; grandchildren, Jamie Raynor, Michelle West, Blaine Camden, and Trent Camden;  5 great grandchildren; and a host of other family members.

Obituary Preview: Joyce Cox Johnson, age 86, of Mount Olive died in the early morning hours on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.  Her loving family was at her side. Joyce was born in the Grantham Community to the late William Rufus Cox and Lillie Hall Cox.  She was married to the late Willie Walter Johnson.
Ms. Johnson was a homemaker and a member of Grants Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Mount Olive.  She was a very active member of the church until her health declined.  At Grants Chapel she served her Lord and Savior by being a Sunday school teacher, VBS teacher, and a member of the church choir.
A service to celebrate her life will be held Monday Evening, March 28, 2022, at 6:00 P.M. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, Rev. Mickey Whitfield officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.  A graveside committal service will be held Tuesday morning, March 29, 2022, at 10:00 A.M. at Wayne Memorial Park.
Joyce is survived by two sons; Willie Ray “Bud” Johnson and friend, Bonnie of Mount Olive, Lynn Johnson and wife, Angie of Mount Olive, a daughter; Wanda Johnson Sloan and husband, Troy of Chinquapin.  Brothers; John L. Cox of Pikeville, Eddis Gerald “Boo” Cox of Oregon. Sister; Carole Bartee of Georgia. Four Grandchildren; Alan Johnson, Abigail Johnson, Johnson Sloan and wife Jessi, & Walter Sloan.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her siblings- Billy Ray Cox & Alice Faye Cox Smith.

Marie is survived by her sons, Mickey Lofton & wife, Angela and Michael Lofton;  three brothers, Thomas Whitfield, Marvin Whitfield and Brownie Whitfield; sisters, Helen Whitfield, Rachel Farrell, Gladys Johnson, Minnie Singleton, Margie Hackley and Myrtle Mitchell; ten grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren. Obituary Preview: Duane Curless Brown, age 88, passed away Saturday at Wayne UNC Health Care. Born in Caribou, Maine, he was the son of the late Herbert Milton Brown and Elizabeth Ann Curless Brown. He was a twenty-year veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of the Oak Forest Church of Christ where he served as an Elder for over 45 years.
A service to celebrate Mr. Brown’s life will be held Friday, March 25, 2022, at 11:00 am at the Oak Forest Church of Christ with Lennie Reagan officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at Wayne Memorial Park. A time of visitation will be held on Thursday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.
Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Carol Brown; daughters, Donna Gummere and husband, Jim, and Leslie Williams; a sister, Mary Lou Brown; four grandchildren, Shannon Ely, Jamie Gummere, Jodi Sites and Chance Williams; six great grandchildren, Wesley Sites, Katlyn Gummere, Isabella Ely, Mia Ely, Emma Sites and Hero Stremfel-Williams; along with his loving family at Oak Forest Church of Christ.
He received a BS in Accounting from Bryant College, Rhode Island (1953), and an MS in Business from University of Rhode Island (1961). He enlisted in the Air Force in 1954, retiring as a Lt Col in 1974.
He began his military career as an enlisted payroll clerk, held numerous administrative duties in Medical Services and Office of the Surgeon General before retiring as the Hospital Administrator from Seymour Johnson, AFB. Following retirement he held positions as Chief of Support Services at Cherry hospital, Accounting Supervisor at Hevi-Duty Electric, and tinkered as a Real Estate Broker and Car salesman before completely retiring in 1982.
Duane was passionate about God, his family, and a close third….golf. He was a man of strong faith; a man who showed his love to his family every day; a man with an infectious laugh and constant encouragement; a man that will be fondly remembered and very missed.

She enjoyed gardening and taking care of her cats, Tony Tiger, Tinker, and Baby. Mrs. Carter was a member of Spirit Pentecostal Holiness Church and attended Walker Memorial United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be held on Monday in Wayne Memorial Park at 3:00 P.M. The family will receive friends following the service.
Mrs. Carter is survived by her son, Donnie Carter of Seven Springs; a brother, Zeb Mitchell of Goldsboro and a sister, Annette Carter of Seven Springs.
