Departed: 04/24/2024 (West Palm Beach)
Obituary Preview: On August 7, 1941, Ralph Augustus Harris made his epic entrance to meet his parents, Robert and Dorothy Harris, and brother, Ronald. At the age of five, Ralph’s mother transitioned. Ralph was raised by his loving grandmother, Etta (Nanny) along with his cousins, Gillie, Ozzie and Valerie Gilstrap with the support of his extended family, the Bartletts and Burrells.
Ralph attended school in East Orange, NJ and graduated from Rutgers University in Newark, NJ. He majored in Political Science, American Government and minored in Economics. While attending Rutgers University, he started the Youth Action Project (YAP) to encourage youth to support political agendas. He was a professor of Political Science and American Government at Essex College, Hudson County College and Palm Beach State College.
After graduation, Ralph began his career as an executive at Beneficial Finance Company then later a Branch Manager at Howard Savings Bank. Banking was his career but politics was his passion thanks to Etta (Nanna). At an early age, his grandmother Etta insisted he attend East Orange NJ city council meetings every Monday evening.
Politicking or partying did not keep Ralph from noticing a petite, pretty young lady named Evelean while studying chemistry with her brother, Spencer.
Ralph and Evelean were introduced and the love story began. Ralph and Evelean married, became the Harris duo and their marriage lasted 55 years. At their home on Madison Avenue in East Orange, NJ, friends and family were always welcomed.
In 1977, Ralph became a candidate for the East Orange City Council and his house basement served as his headquarters, also known as The War Room. He successfully won the election and remained on City Council for 16 years and was Council President four years. Ralph named the city district of East Orange he represented “The Mighty Fifth Ward.” During his career, he received numerous letters of commendations and awards for his service to the community. Ralph used his political savvy and was dedicated to helping his constituents, family and friends.
Ralph enjoyed playing his favorite card game, bid whist and was known for “talking junk”, bragging that he was the president of the fictitious IIW, International Institute of Whist. He loved baseball, avid history enthusiast, traveling, and partaking in fried chicken, which he called the “Gospel Bird”.
In 2005, Ralph and Evelean were installed as Deacons at New Hope Baptist Church, in Newark, NJ under the leadership of Reverend Joe Carter. In 2005, Ralph and Evelean joined Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, in Mangonia Park, FL under the leadership of retired Reverend Melvin Haynes, currently, Pastor Erick W. Evans, Sr.
While on vacation, a cab driver gave Ralph and Evelean a sight seeing tour of Boynton Beach, FL and the rest is history. Look out Florida, here comes lean and keen Ralph Augustus Harris! Ralph and Evelean had an open door policy consistently enticing friends and family by purchasing a condo to visit them in Florida. At Palm Beach State College, Ralph received the award for “Outstanding Professor.”One of his students rated Professor Harris, “he’s one of the nicest teachers I’ve had and he tends to ramble but I will take his class again.”
As a 6 foot 4 inch man, Ralph always did his best to encourage and support. His generosity was unmatched! He would boast, “if you are with Ralph Harris you don’t have to worry about a thing.” One of his favorite sayings, “I’m doing the best I can but not as good as you!” Ralph, today we may not be doing too good but you left us with magnificent memories.
He leaves precious memories for his devoted wife, Evelean (Bryant), sister-in-law, Brenda Harris, nieces, nephews, godsons, Lynson Gilstrap III, Emile Dillon III, Claude B. Craig Jr., family, friends, political affiliates, coworkers, and beloved big sister, Emma Lucas.

Steven Anthony Thomas - June 15, 1934 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (West Palm Beach)
Obituary Preview: I have the honour of reintroducing you to Steven Anthony Thomas—better known to many as “Mas Steve.”
Born June 15, 1934, in Heatsfield, Manchester, Jamaica. Son of Dorcas Pitter and Stanford (Bosley) Thomas; brother of 5, living are Selvyn, Alvin, and Sonny; husband to Calmelena Thomas; father to Cutie and Mike; 4 grandchildren, Taj, Ashlee, Melissa, and Brittany; father-in-law to Lloyd and Peaches; Brother in law to June, Joy, Thelma, Teza, Duke, Earl, Cecil, and les; grand nieces and nephews, Yandy, Suzette, Sophia, Nashika, Lesley Ann, Punchun, likkle Steve, Rickman, FatsD, Orville, Debbie and a myriad of others; 2 great grand dogs, Mylo and Kingston, and friend and storyteller to all else who meet him. We are here today to remember the life and legacy he left on earth. I could go on and reminisce about all the stories Grandpa was either part of or told, and for those who knew Grandpa, you understand how long those stories could be. Grandpa was above all else a family man, followed very closely by storyteller. Family man is a term not appreciated nearly enough these days. Grandpa, though, was the epitome of how great and unselfish it is to put those in your family first.
Grandpa never asked for much and he never took life for granted. He told us stories about his many hats in life. He worked as a butcher, and in public works where he quickly learned that driving a truck was not as easy as walking from Lake Park to 45th street. He enjoyed taking long walks and sitting outside to enjoy the cool breeze. Not only was he a family man, but also a protector. He would lock up the house and grill every night by 6pm sharp and don’t even think of looking for the keys because they were right beside him and the machete was not too far away either. He would also protect all of us from a whole heap of beatings. He was also a healer and didn't know it. When cutie was a little girl, she would feel ill and all he had to do was touch her head and say “wahmp bend up”, rub her down with alcohol and she would instantly feel better. In his recent illness, when he could barely move, Cutie was sick in bed and he walked to her room with olive oil to rub her and pray over her. During his later years, Cutie was able to return the blessings and cared for him until his last days. If you mentioned that you liked anything, you better believe that by the end of the day the fridge would be filled with it. When Mike was a young boy attending school, he would give him enough money to buy bully beef and bread for himself and about six of his friends. I'm happy he lived long enough for us to return the favor. He also took pride in the way he dressed. He dropped his clothes off at the dry cleaners weekly. The seam in his pants were so sharp that it could cut you and dress shoes were polished to perfection. Let’s not forget his many caps and handkerchiefs and if you were ever in need of a pen, one was always in his perfectly ironed shirt pocket.
Grandpa was filled with love. Out of all the stories about his life though, my favourite will always be the one about how he met my grandmother. He married Calmelena on September 18, 1976 in Clarendon, Jamaica. 47 blissful years of matrimony. When he was in the hospital, his main concern was always “How is Calmel? Or Make sure Calmel is alright”. This is a true example of for better or for worse. They have stood the test of time. In his last days, he left a message to her stating that she must keep the faith, keep the lord first, and enjoy the rest of her life.
Grandpa was a lover of all, down to the stray dogs on the street. If you were in need of anything and he had it, you would have it. As we put my grandfather to rest, we bury only his body. His spirit, his soul, his amazing ability to give is still with it. To say that I am lucky to be one of his grandchildren is an understatement. Growing up, us grandchildren always looked forward to spending time with him, especially when we had a loose tooth, he was a master at removing them without pain. It is a blessing that I am truly grateful for and will be for the rest of my life. Early Friday morning March 8th 2024, our beloved “Mas Steve” passed away peacefully with his family by his side. During his last days he said “I am 89 years old and if I were to pass off now, good luck to all of you and God bless you.” It is a challenge to put into words the many things that we would like to say about him. Thank you for your love, Grandpa. As you would say, “yeah man, mi alright man” you can now rest in eternal peace.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, while also providing a sense of closure and allowing people to pay their respects. They also provide a historical record of a person's life and can be a valuable resource for genealogists and researchers.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may offer assistance with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and any other relevant details.

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life. Typically, an obituary ranges from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. Some may have online forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary, while others may require you to contact them directly by phone or in person.

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems that were meaningful to the deceased can add depth and context to the obituary.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review the obituary multiple times for spelling, grammar, and factual errors before submitting it for publication. It's also a good idea to have someone else review it as well.

What if I need to make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published as soon as possible if you need to make corrections or changes. They may be able to assist you with making updates.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for a child or young person?

Yes. When writing an obituary for a child or young person, it's especially important to be sensitive and compassionate in your language. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments, rather than dwelling on their passing.
