Saundra Lee Rowland - April 24, 1950 - March 27, 2023

Departed: 03/27/2023 (Kellogg)
Obituary Preview: Saundra Lee Rowland, 72, of Osburn Idaho, passed away on March 27, 2023 at Shoshone Medical Center, with her daughter, Christy, right by her side. Saundra loved Jesus and longed for the day to be in His presence. We can only imagine the absolute joy and pure love she is now experiencing.
Saundra was born April 24, 1950 in Seattle, WA. She was unselfishly given up for adoption by her birth mother and at just a couple days old, she was chosen by Delbert & Ellen Roberts, who took her home to Chehalis, WA. There, she became the only child and had a wonderful childhood. She was the apple of her dad’s eye.
Saundra just recently obtained her original sealed birth certificate and found her biological siblings. She was overjoyed and so looked forward to meeting them this year. She felt this was a beautiful gift of more family, which meant everything to her. She always longed for more brothers and sisters and obtained that in all her church family and co-workers.  She would tell you she was “rich” in friends.
Saundra married Terry Rowland in 1967, but later divorced in 1973 and moved from Morton, WA to Napavine, WA. She raised two children on her own and worked hard as a single mom. She made both ends meet as a school bus driver for the Napavine School District and worked her way through an AA degree from Centralia Community College. Later, she went to work for Bank Checks and decided she needed a career. So, she enrolled in International Air Academy in Portland, OR and went to work for Alaska Airlines upon graduation. That career took her to work in the Seattle Reservations office, Spokane Airport as a gate agent, and her last position in Boise, ID. She was a faithful employee for over 30 years. After retiring from Alaska Airlines 7 years ago, she moved from Boise to Coeur D’Alene and 4 years ago to Osburn to be closer to her family and a church family she loved so very much.
Saundra was a member of Real Life Ministries Silver Valley in Pinehurst, Idaho. She loved Jesus more than anything and truly loved others as she experienced God’s love. She was recently instrumental in starting the Grief Share & Divorce Care Ministries at her church.
Saundra loved all things “travel”. She has visited every continent except for Antarctica and Australia. Her goal was to fill a passport or two. Some of those trips included missions to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to some of the poorest places in the world. It was not unusual for her to decide on a whim to take a road trip and just see where she ended up. She would always claim she ‘knew a short cut’ which would really end in “getting lost” and taking twice as long. Her family teased her about it all the time, knowing she probably did it on purpose, to prolong the adventure. She was also an avid flower lover. You could find her outside most of the time making her porches and decks beautiful. She loved camping and being in the outdoors as much as she could.
She is preceded in death by her adoptive parents, Delbert and Ellen Roberts; and her biological brother, Albert Brinegan.
She is survived by her daughter, Christy Jacobs (Gene) of Pinehurst, ID; her son, JD Rowland (Trina) of Chehalis, WA; Recently discovered biological brothers, Mike Brinegan of San Diego, CA and Steve Brenigan of Lakebay,  WA. She has 5 grandchildren, Brandon Rowland (Felicia), Elizabeth Hammer (Dallas), Courtney Pitts (Briana), Carly Ramirez (Mario), and Merenza Richards. She also has 3 great grandchildren, Oliver, Akasha, and Noelia.
A celebration of her life will be on April 15, 2023, 11:00 am at Real Life Ministries Silver Valley, 708 S Division St, Pinehurst, ID. The family invites you to a reception immediately after. Donations in her honor may be made to the Silver Valley Snack Pak Program, where she loved to volunteer filling weekend snack bags for local children; PO Box 81, Pinehurst, ID 83850.
Memories of Saundra and messages of condolence may be shared with her family online at www.shoshonefuneralservice.com. Shoshone Funeral Services, Kellogg, is assisting Saundra’s family with arrangements.

Paul Eugene Hodgman - January 16, 1939 - March 22, 2023

Departed: 03/22/2023 (Kellogg)
Obituary Preview: Paul Eugene Hodgman, 84 of Kingston, ID passed away March 22, 2023 literally surrounded on all sides by his loving family at Shoshone Medical Center in Kellogg, ID.  Paul had been fighting cancer and its residual effects for over five years.  He spent his last few days at the Shoshone Medical Center in Kellogg.  He fought hard to battle the illness but it just was too much for his body. His wife, Barb, and his daughters and their families, were all at his side.
Paul was born on January 16, 1939 in Rapid City, SD to Stella (Kathryn Estelle Hodgman-Piippo) and husband Walter Hodgman.  His mother later remarried and Gus Piippo became his stepfather.  Paul’s family moved from Rapid City to Kellogg where Paul graduated from Kellogg High School in 1957.  He was very popular and maintained close connections with many of those school chums until late in life.  Such fun getting together and hearing about their escapades when they were young.
On March 3, 1958 Paul enlisted in the US Navy.  In 1959 he was stationed on the USS Guide (M50-447) a Minesweeper.  Next, while stationed in Seattle, he met and eventually married Barbara Heddles on November 21, 1964.   In 1966 Paul was promoted to Chief and they were transferred to Kodiak, Alaska where their first daughter, Jacquie, was born.  It was such a great time for both Paul and Barb as they loved the rough outdoors in their little yellow jeep.   After about 2 years they were sent to Brunswick, Georgia where second daughter, Cheryll, was born.   In 1968 Paul was assigned to the USS Carpenter (DD-825) where he was in charge of the electronics.  He was promoted again and had the rank of Senior Chief.   Eventually they moved on to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where daughter, Vicki, was born.  They made some very good friends and many many memories of good times and good people. At some point in time he was temporarily assigned to Patrol Boats in Vietnam.  His rank was Electronic Technician.  They next moved next to San Francisco at Hunters Point where it was not uncommon to hear gunshots at night near their housing area.   Their last move was to San Diego and they resided in Chula Vista just a few miles from the border to Tijuana, Mexico.  This was Paul’s last duty station.  He retired from the Navy November 3, 1976.  His rank was ETSC.
Thinking that Spokane would be a great, affordable place to live, they made the move.  Barb’s sister, Bev, had lived there several years and loved it.  Well, it was right at the end of the Vietnam War and veterans were being welcomed home with anger and rejection.  It was a very difficult time for veterans to get jobs, plus housing had skyrocketed.  After two years they moved back to Paul’s home,  the Silver Valley, and landed in Pinehurst where they have lived ever since.
Paul next worked at Bunker Hill until it closed in 1981 then went back to college at NIC majoring in business where he made the Dean’s List.  He moved on work for Pioneer Title in CDA for several years and then with Bonneville Power in Montana..
Paul is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Jeanne Hodgman; their three daughters,  Jacquie Hodgman-Richter (John) of Pinehurst;  Cheryll Robinett (Skip) of Pinehurst, and Vicki Hodgman-Oliver (Duane) of Coeur d’Alene.  Paul also has a stepson, Phil Harold (Janice) of Utah who has six children.  In addition Paul is survived by his sister, Judy Hodgman-Thorburn and her family of Coulton, OR, who came to visit just days before he passed.  He leaves behind numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, as well as many, many nieces and nephews.
At Paul’s request there will be no formal service at this time, however the the family is planning a military graveside service at a later date in Kingston.
Memories of Paul and messages of condolence may be shared with his family online at www.shoshonefuneralservice.com. Shoshone Funeral Services, Kellogg, is assisting the Hodgman family with arrangements.

Shirley Ann Heidt - June 04, 1935 - March 15, 2023

Departed: 03/15/2023 (Kellogg)
Obituary Preview: On Wednesday, March 15, 2023, the Lord called home another one of His angels.  Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother and sister, Shirley Ann (Flood) Heidt, 87, passed away in Kellogg, Idaho at Mountain Valley of Cascadia.
Shirley was born on June 4, 1935, in Martins Ferry, Ohio.  She was the daughter of Francis and Jeanette Flood and was second to the oldest of their 14 children.  The Flood family moved from Martins Ferry, Ohio, to Martinez, California, to Sacramento, California then back to Martins Ferry, Ohio before making the move to Mullan, Idaho in the late 1940’s.  At the time they moved to Mullan, there were only eight Flood children.  The last six were born in Wallace between 1951 and 1958.   Francis and Jeanette Flood deserve acknowledgement for their contribution to the population of the small mining town of Mullan.
On August 11, 1951, Shirley married Don Heidt in Wallace, Idaho.  They were married for over 61 years before his passing in 2013.  They had four children.  Donella was born in 1952, Jeanette in 1953, Jack in 1954 and Michael in 1956.   Shirley was a very devoted young wife and mother.  In her early years of marriage, she was kept busy keeping her children busy.  The girls attended Betty Damiano’s School of Dance, were involved in 4H, Bluebirds and Camp Fire….which Shirley participated as an Assistant Bluebird Leader.  The boys were in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and played various sports.  In the late 1960’s, once the kids hit their teens, Shirley went to work for Blum’s Flower Shop in Osburn, creating beautiful flower arrangements.   Then she worked for a few years at Morrow’s Department Store in Wallace, before joining Don at his State Farm Insurance Agency in Kellogg.  They eventually moved from Silverton to Kellogg and became very active in the Kellogg Business Community.  Besides community involvement, both Shirley & Don were big Seattle Seahawks fans.  They had season tickets and enjoyed going to Seattle for the home games.  It always included a stay at their favorite B&B in Ellensburg.
Shirley showed her love for you, not through words, but through her daily acts of kindness.  For many years, she cooked the Holiday dinners for her family.  If a sibling was alone for the holidays, they were invited too.  A significant act of love was shown after the passing of her youngest son, Michael, in 2013.  In February of 2016, Michael’s two youngest children, Jacob (13) & Samantha (12), were in need of custodial care.  Grandma Shirley was not going to allow them to be placed with anyone else but her.  She raised them for the next 2 ½ years.  But at the age of 81, it became difficult for her to keep up with two active teenagers.  During the summer of 2018, she finally agreed that it was time to pass the responsibility on to others.  She was so proud of her family when her oldest grandson, Jason and his wife, Heather, offered to take over.  Throughout the years, watching sports became a big part of Shirley’s life.  She attended every sporting event possible for her children & grandchildren.  And last year, at the age of 86 and using her walker, she even attended a couple of basketball games for two of her great-grandchildren.   Had she had the strength….she would have attended every single game.  Other hobbies of Shirley’s were bowling with Don on a mixed league in Wallace, reading a good book and daily morning walks with three of her close girlfriends in Kellogg.  For many years, Shirley was an active member of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Wallace.  Besides church, friends, and her immediate family….her siblings were an important part of her life.  They had fun whenever they got together.  Inevitably, “We Are Family” was sung by the siblings at almost every wedding reception and a few family reunions.  So many fun, wonderful memories of a beautiful lady!  During her final weeks of life, one of her favorite past times was watching the Gonzaga Bulldog men’s basketball team.
Shirley is survived by three of her children, Donella Mooney of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Jeanette Lenseigne of Liberty Lake, Wa. and Jack (Charmaine) Heidt of Rose Lake, Idaho; nine grandchildren, Jason (Heather) Heidt, Brook (Fred) Chilson, Aaron (Maura) Heidt, Jared (Pam) Watson, William Pickett, Kris (Jamii) Heidt, Tony (fiancé Tiffany) Heidt, Jacob (fiancé Bri) Heidt and Samantha (Brandon) Cobb; nine great-grandchildren, Alissa (Jovan) Sandoval, Stephen (Hannah Manty) Zanetti, Zoey Zanetti, River Heidt and his twin sister, Isla Heidt, Everett Heidt, Jhett Watson, Owen Heidt and Peny Mae Heidt; and three great-great grandchildren, Sawyer Zanetti, Elsie Jerome and Carter Sandoval.  She is also survived by nine siblings, Betty Gohl, Jim Flood, Charles Flood, Harold Flood, Dorothy Houchin, Karen Durfee, Sandy Stepro, Janice Sala and Kimberly Sevy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Jeanette Flood, her husband, Don Heidt, her youngest son, Michael Heidt and four siblings, Robert “Bob” Flood, David Flood, JoAnn Wallace and Mike Flood.
At Shirley’s request, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life for the family will be planned at a later date.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Pottsville Park project which can be sent to the Mullan Community Foundation, P.O. Box 472, Mullan, ID 83846 (make sure to add the notation “Pottsville Park”),  the Shoshone Cancer Resource Center, 204 Oregon St., Kellogg, ID 83837 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Obituary Preview: James “Jim” Lee Derbyshire, 71, of Kellogg, ID, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many, passed away on March 15, 2023 at his home in Kellogg surrounded by his family. Jim was born on April 27, 1951 in Spokane, WA, a son of the late James Richard Derbyshire and Marilyn (Hawley) Derbyshire Decker.

He had a wide variety of skilled knowledge (including a degree as a Machinist) but was a long-time entrepreneur. He proudly operated J.A.S Janitorial with his wife and daughters. He was pleased to support the local economy and often hired folks who needed a “hand-up”. Jim was an incredibly giving and kind man, even if he growled about it from time to time.

Jim married Penny Eaton on August 28, 1970, in Coeur d’Alene, ID. Jim and Penny had three children: Jennifer, Alecia and Sarah. Alecia passed away in 2016. His family knows she was waiting for him in Heaven – happy to be reunited with his daughter.
He enjoyed dancing with his “dearly beloved”, his forever bride, Penny. He loved going for drives – windows down, radio up, singing along to every song with his gorgeous singing voice (which he reserved only for private occasions or worship).  He adored his daughters and their families, especially his grandbabies. They, affectionally, called him “Grumpy” or “Papa”. He was thrilled to answer each of these, along with “uncle” and “brother”. He would have been surprised to hear the many mentions his family has received of “mentor”, “father figure” or “hero”.
In addition to his parents and daughter, Alecia, Jim is preceded in death by his siblings Rita Jean, Richard Bruce, Denyce Vina (Derbyshire) Hall, Robert James, and Francis Eugene Decker.

Departed: 02/28/2023 (Kellogg)
Obituary Preview: Marion McGillivray of Kingston, ID passed away quietly on February 28, 2023 with family by her side.  At the time she was at Mountain Valley of Cascadia in Kellogg, ID
She was born March 4, 1936 in Watertown, South Dakota to Martin and Mabel (Olson) Krull.  She was the youngest of the “Krull” sisters.  The family left South Dakota when she was barely a year old and after a few attempts, finally made their home on the West Fork of Pine Creek.
Marion grew up loving animals, especially banty chickens and horses; and she was an avid horseback rider. Until she had a horse of her own, she would ask neighbors to ride theirs.  Often, she was told that if she could catch and get on the horse, she could ride it – she did.  This love for animals was passed on to her daughters, though only one was "horse crazy".
She married her friend and the love of her life, Charles McGillivray in 1956.  Together, they raised their two daughters at their home in French Gulch.  In addition to being a homemaker, Marion grew vegetables, flowers and helped Charlie with the outside chores.  Later in life she found enjoyment in jigsaw puzzles and at a smaller scale, growing flower and cherry tomatoes.   She also cared for and watched quail, hummingbirds and her cat “Lucy”.  Her love of animals did not extend to wild turkeys.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her sisters, Wealthea Groth and Donna Van Vleet.
She is survived by her daughters, Karen Wolf of Port Angeles, WA , Jackie McGillivray and son-in-law Michael Leverick of Kingston, ID;  and several nieces, nephews. Dale Benedict Lavigne - April 29, 1931 - February 25, 2023

Departed: 02/25/2023 (Kellogg)
Obituary Preview: Dale Benedict Lavigne, 91, of Osburn, ID beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on February 25, 2023 in Coeur d’Alene, ID.  Dale was born April 29, 1931 in Kellogg, Idaho to Emma (Sala) and Ben Lavigne.
As a young man growing up in Kellogg, Dale was active in school sports and played in a band at many different bars and clubs throughout the Silver Valley.  During high school and when home from college, he also worked at the Pik-Wik Market in Kellogg as a meat cutter.  As a young man, Dale learned early in life about the value and importance of hard work.  He also developed an entrepreneurial spirit.  In college at the University of Montana in Missoula, Dale owned and ran his own concession business in the dorms.  He sold pop, candy and chips to the other students.
Dale graduated from the University of Montana in 1953 with a degree in pharmacy.  He immediately went to work in Wallace at the Brooks Pharmacy.  Dale started his first pharmacy, Osburn Drug, shortly thereafter.  Eventually Dale owned and operated, with his brother Lew, five pharmacies in North Idaho and western Montana.  Additionally, they owned the Morrow’s department and clothing store and Tabor’s.  As the economy and buying habits changed, the brick and mortar stores were sold or closed and Dale devoted his efforts to developing a specialty clothing and printing business, Idaho Mining Apparel and Supply, currently located in Osburn, ID.
Dale married Rosalyn (Rose) Pfeifer on September 12, 1953 in Kellogg, ID and together they raised seven strong, independent and talented children, who continue to follow in their parents’ footsteps.
Dale, along with his dad and older brother, Lew, had many adventures while hunting, fishing and camping throughout the Silver Valley and the St. Joe River areas.  Dale and Rose along with their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family friends were able to enjoy many a summer on the family river property located on the North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River.  Being at the river was one of Dale’s greatest loves.  It was a time to find peace and recharge his batteries for other projects in life.
Dale’s great loves in life were his family, his Catholic faith and his community.  Dale was instrumental in helping to lead or worked on a number of community projects including, the Sierra Silver Mine Tour, Slippery Gulch Days and the Silver Mountain Gondola project.  When the Bunker Hill Mine and Smelter Complex shut down in 1982, resulting in the loss of over 2,000 jobs, Dale was asked by then Governor John Evans to lead a group tasked with finding a buyer for the Bunker Hill property.  Dale walked away from his many business ventures to help in the search because he recognized the importance of service to his community.  Dale’s son, Ron, stepped in to manage the family business while Dale was serving his community and state.
Dale was a member of many clubs and organizations both locally and nationally that are far too numerous to mention.  Additionally, he served on numerous committees at the local and state levels and received many awards for his business success and service.  He was chairman of the Wallace School Board for a number of years.  Dale was also Chairman of the Board of the First National Bank of North Idaho and served on numerous other corporate and charitable boards.  He served on the Board of Trustees at Gonzaga University in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.  Dale was always willing to work with bringing people together to solve problems.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Emma and his brother Lewis.
He leaves behind his loving wife Rose, seven children and their spouses; Ron (Paula) Lavigne, Michelle (Tom) Kilbourne, Mike (Kellie) Lavigne, Cindy (Rand) Martinez, Dave (Ann) Lavigne, Joe (Jamie) Lavigne, and Dan (Michelle) Lavigne, twenty grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and extended family members Jim (Jodie) Roletto and family and Gordon (Carolyn) Turner and family .  He also leaves behind many good friends and acquaintances.
A rosary service will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 4:00 P.M.  A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023 at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Wallace with Father Jerome Montez and Father Bruno Segatta concelebrating the Mass. A reception/luncheon will be held at the Wallace Elks Lodge in Wallace immediately following the funeral Mass; everyone is welcome. Obituary Preview: Nola Zoe Jenicek, of Kingston, Idaho, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on February 24 2023, just a few weeks after celebrating her 89th birthday surrounded by her loved ones.
Nola is survived by her husband of 69 years, Charles Oliver Jenicek; and her two daughters, Beckie (Geoff Flolo) and Heidi (Matt Davis); as well as her grandchildren Amanda, Stephanie, and Logan (Tierney), and her great – grandson, Sullivan.
Nola was born on January 21, 1934 to Jesse Edgar Smith and Mildred Rosemary (nee Major) in Ekalaka, Montana and was the fourth of seven children. She greatly missed her late siblings, Jim Smith and Maxine Alloway who passed before her. She is survived by her remaining siblings, Jeanie Bachmeier, Larry Smith, Terry Smith, and Zella Burt.
She grew up in Kingston, Idaho, where she graduated from Kingston High School. Following graduation, she worked at a café in Kellogg and at her uncle and aunt’s hotel on the Oregon Coast – which was one of her most treasured memories – before settling down as a homemaker, dedicated gardener, and committed member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pinehurst, ID.
Her greatest joy was her family – her own and those of her many siblings and her brothers and sisters in law, along with incredible nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, who she treasured and regularly shared memories and successes of. When not in her presence, Nola spent her time speaking of how much she loved the people in her life, and how wonderfully blessed she felt she was to have such an amazing family.
She was a skilled artist and designer, who designed both the house in Kingston and the cabin on Coeur d’Alene Lake that she and Charles built together. Both of these homes are a reflection of her impeccable taste and dedication to a unique and colourful aesthetic. In her final days at home, she was heard sharing with her sister: “I’ve had such a wonderful life and a wonderful family. It’s not that I don’t want to go, it’s that I don’t want to leave them”
And she will never have to, because she will live on in the hearts and memories of her many loved ones through her numerous beautiful oil paintings will remain treasured memories in the homes of her relatives.
Funeral services for Nola will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023, 11:00 AM at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pinehurst. Interment will follow at Hunt Cemetery in Kingston. A reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the church immediately after the graveside services at the cemetery.
Memories of Nola and messages of condolence may be shared with her family online at www.shoshonefuneralservices.com. Shoshone Funeral Services, Kellogg, ID, is assisting the Jenicek family with arrangements.
