Ruth E. Neill - June 18, 1925 - March 11, 2022

Departed: 03/11/2022 (Marlborough)
Obituary Preview: Ruth E. Neill of Marlborough passed away peacefully on March 11th, surrounded by family, at the age of 96.
A lifelong resident of Marlborough whose ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War, Ruth was born Ruth Edwards Tucker on June 18, 1925 in Marlborough, to parents John and Marion (Brown) Tucker. Ruth graduated from Marlborough High School in 1942. Throughout her early life, Ruth loved music, and played in the high school orchestra. She was a talented musician and her love of music followed her throughout her life. She played the violin, organ and piano, as well as sang in community and church choirs for many years. Ruth was the middle of three children, and was predeceased by her older sister Elsie in 1984 and her younger brother Alvin in 2015.
After graduating, Ruth married Ralph A. Neill in 1943 before he joined the war effort. The two traveled the country together during the war as Ralph trained to pilot B-24 Liberator Bombers. After the war, they returned to Marlborough where they raised two children, Karin Kirby of Marlborough and Stephen Neill of Meredith NH. She is survived by both of her children, as well as her daughter-in-law, Dianne Neill of Meredith NH, and 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Her second great-great grandchild is due later this month.
Ruth and Ralph traveled the world together later in life, visiting Europe and Central America and Australia. They often traveled with a group, and they called themselves “The Happy Wanderers”. Ruth and Ralph celebrated 51 wonderful years of marriage before Ralph passed in 1994, and she spoke of him frequently and fondly for all the years after.  Ruth continued to travel overseas with her daughter and took many trips with her son and daughter-in-law throughout the South, Midwest, and California for graduations, weddings and pleasure, visiting some of her favorite sights and beaches along the way. Ruth worked for Koehler Manufacturing Co., a producer of coal mining lamps, in Marlborough for over 30 years. She started in a part-time position in the purchasing department soon after her son began school. She then worked her way up, eventually becoming the executive secretary to the vice president of manufacturing, where she was an integral part of the company's operation and success. Ruth was always proud of the work she did at Koehler, and reflected on her years there fondly. When downsizing later in life, a ceramic coal miner statue that was gifted to her by the company for her contributions was among one of the most important things she kept. “It isn’t about the statue, really,” she said of its importance to her, “it was about being recognized.”
Ruth was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Marlboro before becoming a congregant of First Federated Church in Hudson, where she was very involved and gave generously of her time and talents. The community was important to her, and she was close with many members, including her long-time best friend Esther Folkes of Hudson. Two of Ruth’s favorite annual church events were Angel Tree at Christmastime and the St. Patrick’s Day supper. Ruth never missed a year of Angel Tree, dutifully picking out presents to donate every year, and included her granddaughter and great granddaughters in the tradition in later years. She also regularly helped prepare the St. Patrick’s Day supper, spending hours with others peeling potatoes for the annual event.
Ruth was a very proud grandmother, and family was important to her. She loved little more in life than getting phone calls and cards with updates on her grandchildren and great-grandchildrens’ lives. Her refrigerator always had photos of each of her 13 great-grandchildren, and she always greeted them with wide open arms and a dish full of candy. Ruth lived a very full and happy life. When pressed later in life to consider if she had any unfinished travel or bucket list items, she said no, she had gotten to do everything that she wanted to do on this earth. She lived a good life, she would say, and couldn’t ask for anything more. When discussing her world travels, her granddaughter recently asked where her favorite place in the world was. “Honestly,” she replied, “the best place in the world to me was always my home.”
Ruth was so many things in life - the 19-year-old World War II bride, a filler of candy dishes, a crossword puzzler, a Friday night dinner Scrabble player,  a peeler of potatoes for church suppers, a loving wife, a world traveler, a proud grandmother, and a top female executive at a time when there wasn’t just a glass ceiling but a glass door, too. She was also an avid reader of obituaries, and we hope she would have enjoyed reading hers. It was poignant that she said that the best place in the world to her was always home. She had a strong faith, and she is now in her final heavenly home.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 11 a.m. in the First Federated Church, 200 Central St., Hudson, MA.

Thomas L. Aho (Hautaaho), - September 26, 1947 - February 28, 2022

Departed: 02/28/2022 (Marlborough)
Obituary Preview: Thomas L. Aho (Hautaaho) , “Uncle Tom”.  It is with profound sadness that the family and friends of Tom announce his passing on February 28th at the age of 74 at his Marlborough home.  Born in Boston, he is predeceased by his parents Gustie H. (b. Gloucester, MA) and Marion (Troop) Aho (b. Boston, MA). He was predeceased by his brother Edward G. Aho and his sister Patricia A. Cunningham. He is survived by his nephews, Glenn Aho of Auburn ME and Richard Cunningham and his children Brett and Samantha Cunningham; and nieces Christina Cunningham, and Heather Bishop and her son Matthew, all of Brockton MA.  Other family who are fortunate to have had Tom in their lives include Sara-Lee and Bruce Beller and their children Jonathan of IN, and William and Joesph of TN; Leslee and Ron Kelley and their children Garrett and Lindsey, all of Scarborough, ME; Virginia Beal of Old Town, ME; Vicki Curry of Hampden, ME and their families and countless others including his Bose family.
Having built his first analog computer in 1962, Tom graduated from Boston Technical High School that same year and worked for Block Engineering before entering the US Army to join the 56th Military Police Company at Fort Richardson, Alaska, where he was recognized as an Honor Graduate for not only his extraordinary work and achievement within the US Army Strategic Communications Command but also for completing the necessary coursework in half the time and with a score of 97.3 out of 100.  His achievements earned him distinction from several unit command officers including the Brigadier General.
Tom then started what would be a 40-year journey with the Bose Corporation where he was widely acclaimed for his co-invention of an actuator (US. Pat No: 6,597,145 B1), an integral component of the famed Bose 901 speaker that can be heard throughout the world in premium home and auto audio systems.
Tom’s more than four-decade career at Bose Corporation started in an unassuming way. In 1972 he joined Bose as a staff technician, equipped only with his training as a military radio technician. Very quickly though he demonstrated an intelligence and work ethic that greatly impressed Bose’s MIT founders. He became a key contributor to an effort to develop the innovated manufacturing processes needed to produce the actuator at the heart of the Bose 901 loudspeaker.  The Bose 901 speaker was the product that launched Bose’s premium home audio business. The 901 actuators were also a key enabler for Bose to launch its automotive business. One of the founders of Bose offered that Tom was one of the most intelligent people he has ever met and a vital contributor to Bose’s success. During his four decades at Bose, Tom continually reinvented himself and found ways to make contributions to the company and its customers. He made significant contributions in manufacturing equipment design, power electric, and high-performance computing during his career. By the time he retired in 2016, Tom, who was self-taught, had achieved one of the highest Research Engineer grades at Bose. Tom was always generous with his time to help his coworkers, in both corporate and their personal endeavors.
Tom had an insatiable curiosity that resulted in him being extraordinary at anything he explored, whether it was technology, electronics, hydronics, automotive, genealogy, DIY projects, photography, Comic Con, Anime, world events, and more, such as farming where he raised animals and planted and harvested acres of wheat.  Tom had a penchant for intellectual and fun conversation and a keen sense of cultural awareness that opened him to learn from everyone he encountered.
Those who knew Tom referred to him as the “the Fun Uncle”—meaning way cooler and more fun than other uncles. He was warm, humble, known to spring into dance, and always possessed an eagerness to help anyone in need.  He loved his family and friends but Ford Mustangs, his Goldwing, his Redwings, and especially his Dunkin Donuts travel mug were all a close second.
Services for Tom will be held later this spring in Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Plain.

Ann Paterson - November 19, 1927 - February 10, 2022

Departed: 02/10/2022 (Marlborough)
Obituary Preview: PATERSON, Ann (Devney), 94, of the Meadows / New Horizons retirement community in Marlborough, Massachusetts, died peacefully on February 10, 2022. Born November 19, 1927, Ann was the daughter of Martin Francis Devney and Minnie Rose (Walshe) Devney of Boston and was raised in the city’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood. She graduated from Girls’ Latin School, and then Radcliffe College in Cambridge (class of 1949), and became a registered nurse after training at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She moved to Marlborough in 1963. Ann worked for many years at Dennison Manufacturing Company in Framingham as a company nurse, retiring in the mid-1980s.
She was the loving wife of Ian C. Paterson, an engineering manager from Canada whom she met at Dennison and married in 1975. They tended their garden and traveled the world joyfully together until his death in 1995 on a cruise off the coast of Denmark.
Ann joined her retirement community in 2003, and soon grew to love it and the many friends she made there. A tiny woman with a soft voice, wry humor, keen intellect, and kind heart, she spent the rest of her life reading widely and voraciously (from C.S. Lewis and David McCullough to Nevil Shute, Hilary Mantel, and Dennis Lehane); drinking strong coffee and white wine; watching movies and TV shows (preferably vintage English films, those featuring Judi Dench above all); gaming with a school of fellow bridge sharks; cherishing a parade of horribly spoiled cats; missing Ian and a sadly increasing company of dear departed; and delighting her friends and family with her quiet curiosity, gentle wit, and fascinating stories and observations.
Our lovely Aunt Ann was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Paul, Robert, and Frank; and her sister-in-law Shirley (Campion) Devney, plus two other sisters-in-law she treasured as best friends: Joanne (McGlaflin) Devney and Joan “Joanne” (Holmstrom) Devney.
She leaves her sister-in-law Blanche (Takaki) Devney of Foxboro, plus a bereft bunch of nieces and nephews: Robert Devney Jr. of North Attleboro; Elizabeth Devney; Michael Devney of Cambridge; Darcy Devney and her husband Robert Kuhn of Arlington; Laura (Devney) Nadeau and her husband Michael of Algonquin, Illinois; Steven Devney and his wife Donna of Hendersonville, Nevada; Andrew Devney of Andover; Mark Devney and his wife Tracey of Castle Rock, Colorado; and Peter Devney of Haverhill.
Also missing Ann already are the next generations: Nicole Nadeau of Wheaton, Illinois; David Nadeau, his wife Maggie, and their sons Westley and Milo of Glendale, Arizona; and Cassandra (Devney) Oliver and her husband Nick of West Suffield, Connecticut.
Those attending any memorial for Ann must be fully vaccinated and wear a properly fitted mask. Services will be held at St. Matthias Church, 409 Hemenway Street, Marlborough, at 1 pm on Wednesday, February 16.  Arrangements by Short & Rowe Funeral Home, 95 West Main St, Marlborough. Ann will be buried with her husband Ian at Evergreen Cemetery in Marlborough on a later date. Farewell, dear heart!

Gregory John O'Brien - April 20, 1945 - February 09, 2022

Departed: 02/09/2022 (Marlborough)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory John O’Brien, age 76, of Marlborough, Massachusetts, on February 9, 2022.
Greg was born on April 20, 1945, to Effie and John O’Brien in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. During his youth, his family lived in Darby and Gulph Mills, PA, the Chicago suburbs, and St. Louis, MO, before returning to King of Prussia, PA. Greg graduated from Upper Merion High School in 1963, where he was captain of the swim team, wrote for the school newspaper, and was known as “Obie” to his many friends. He spent his summers with his grandparents at Thousand Island Park on Wellesley Island and it remained one of his favorite places. His siblings, Matthew and Tracy, remember Greg as a loving and protective big brother and an engaging storyteller. He was always there for them with advice, comfort, and encouragement in their interests and careers.
Greg married his high-school sweetheart, Anne Elaine Kindig, in 1966 in King of Prussia before they moved to West Berlin, Germany. Greg served in the Army Security Agency in Berlin from 1966-1969. After returning from Berlin, Greg and Anne both graduated from Penn State University with bachelor’s degrees in 1975. They moved to Massachusetts in 1978, where they lived together for the rest of his life. Greg worked for many companies as a computer programmer and software engineer for most of his career, and then as a software contractor for 28 years through his own company, Appropriate Software, Inc.
Gregory and Anne raised two devoted daughters, Erin Anne and Jenny Alyssa. A voracious reader, Greg instilled in them a love of learning, curiosity, and a respect for books. He taught them to love jazz, The Beatles, and that “You never turn off the radio if Elvis is playing”. Some of his favorite memories were traveling with his family and he loved being able to revisit Berlin with his wife and daughters in 1997 and again in 2000 for his Army reunion.
A man of few words, Gregory was content in the presence of others, always lending a sympathetic ear and insightful remarks. His formidable intellect and breadth of knowledge were hard to match. He was modest to a fault, barring a well-placed compliment regarding his pumpkin or apple pies, holiday favorites. He surprised everyone by choosing “Play That Funky Music” for his father-daughter dance at Erin’s wedding, where he danced the night away. He was a loving grandfather to Everett and Adeline.
During his retirement years Greg remained curious, always trying new hobbies and keeping up with the latest technology and coding languages. He shared an interest in sustainable farming and permaculture with his brother Matt, and kept a home garden including milkweed to support Monarch butterflies. One of Greg’s many hobbies was ham radio, carried through from childhood, and he was a licensed testing administrator. He loved the color green (particularly lime green) and surrounded himself with it, starting with a custom-painted Volkswagen in Berlin. Greg worked as an auto mechanic in the early 70’s for a showroom stock racing driver and his love of Formula 1 and Grand Prix racing, and cars in general, was lifelong.
Greg is predeceased by his parents, John Edward O’Brien and Effie Williams MacDougall. He is survived by his wife Anne Kindig O’Brien, his daughters Erin O’Brien Ingraffia (Roy) and Jenny O’Brien (Oisín), his grandchildren Everett and Adeline Ingraffia, who meant the world to him, and his siblings Matthew O’Brien (Janice) and Tracy O’Brien and two nieces.
He is deeply missed by his friends and family.
A private service will be held at a later date.
