Sally Scanlon Monaghan - July 29, 1945 - April 25, 2024

Departed: 04/25/2024 (East Haven)
Obituary Preview: Sally Scanlon Monaghan July 29, 1945 - April 25, 2024
Sally Scanlon Monaghan, 78, died peacefully at Connecticut Hospice on April 25, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. She had lived for five and a half years with cancer, a burden she bore with courage and good grace.
Born in Seattle, Sally lived in Yakima, Washington; Long Island, New York; and Kansas City, Missouri, during her formative years. After graduating from Clarke College (now University) in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1967, she embarked on a career as a journalist and editor.
As a child she fell in love with opera and studied voice for many years. Another youthful avocation was dance. She was to put these two skills to use in later years.
When she was just 12 she announced her dream of moving to New York City; that dream came true in 1971. There she held editorial positions at Sales and Marketing Management magazine and the Research Institute of America.
An avid devotee of the performing arts, Sally became a dedicated subscriber to the Metropolitan Opera. She became active in various amateur performing groups in New York. Her debut performance in a non-speaking mime role in Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Sorcerer" for the Village Light Opera Group was a cherished memory for those who saw it. She later danced in “Tom Jones” and sang in the VLOG chorus in several G&S shows.
Sally also performed with the all-male Amateur Comedy Club and the all-female Snarks, which she joined in 1981. She served a term as the Snark’s president, or “Bellman,” along with other positions over the years.
In Manhattan, Sally lived a block from her beloved Central Park and she donated her time in a number of park beautification projects.
In 1992, she married Kelly Monaghan and in 1993 joined him as Editor in Chief of The Intrepid Traveler, a publisher of travel books, which relocated from Manhattan to Branford in 2001. She was a significant contributor to the imprint’s success.
Working with author Steven Barrett, she crafted the best-selling “Hidden Mickeys” series of guidebooks, which became just one of two non-Disney books to be sold in the Disney theme parks, selling hundreds of thousands of copies.
Another labor of love was “Paris Movie Walks,” by Michael Schuermann, a collection of walking tours that take you past locations where famous films had been shot. A stickler for accuracy, Sally spent an entire month in Paris walking and re-walking every step of those routes to make sure the book’s directions were as precise as possible.
Sally became an ardent world traveler. She enjoyed many cruises, including two on clipper ships and several transatlantic voyages. Other adventures included an air courier trip to Chile; stays in a Buddhist monastery and a 200-year-old thatched-roof farmhouse in Japan; five weeks working remotely from Buenos Aires; and a journey, mostly by train and ferry, that circumnavigated the Baltic Sea, and included a voyage aboard the MS Lafoten, the oldest working ship of the Hurtigruten line from above the Arctic Circle to Bergen, Norway.
Theatre was her other great love and she and her husband spent five months a year in Stratford, Ontario, seeing every production at the Stratford and Shaw Festivals along with many others.
Sally was a beloved woman whose generous spirit touched so many. Her family and friends always knew she would be there for them, loving and giving of whatever they might need.
Sally is survived by her husband Kelly Monaghan, her sisters Lois Scanlon-Racz, husband Istvan, Joan Boyle, husband Steve, her brothers Royal, wife Peggy, David, and Kevin Scanlon, her nephew Adam Geffert, wife Melissa, and niece JoAnna Geffert, partner Dan Welch. Other survivors include her stepson Niall Monaghan, his wife Coco, and their children Declan and Nola.
As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations can be made to the Stratford Festival at www.stratfordfestival.ca/SupportUs/CommemorativeGifts or by calling 519.271.4040 ext. 2275.

Departed: 12/12/2023 (East Haven)
Obituary Preview: Carole Patton-Keim, of Hamden passed away at her home on December 12, 2023, with her husband Mel Keim Jr. at her side.
Carole enjoyed traveling with her loving and adventurous husband Mel. We traveled to Greece, Italy, Turkey, and they were awesome trips. We also went to Moab to take the challenge of “Hell’s Revenge”. We suited up with helmets. Mel drove the ATV and I was holding on to the panic bar, what a thrilling time! We also walked “The Narrow”. The current was moving and lots of rocks. The view was awesome. Then we went rafting down the Colorado River, oh yeah! We docked at the end and climbed a wooden staircase to the top of the mountain and were picked up by helicopter. What a surprise! We stayed at Red Cliff Lodge; the food was great. We went horseback riding, clear skies and awesome mountains. It was breathtaking! We enjoyed Las Vegas with great concerts and enjoyed staying at hotels and great meals. We went to Yellowstone and saw Old Faithful erupt. That was thrilling. Coming home was great. We enjoyed our home. Mel grilled and I was the sous chef.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Carole on December 23, 2023, at 11:00 AM in Blessed Sacrament Church, 321 Circular Ave, Hamden. We would like to thank the staff at Smilow for their exceptional care, especially the 8th, 12th, and 14th floors. Everyone was so caring!

Domenic Vaccaro - December 08, 1949 - November 01, 2023

Departed: 11/01/2023 (East Haven)
Obituary Preview: November 1st, 2023, Domenic Francis Vaccaro Jr, 73, of Guilford, CT, passed away peacefully with family by his side. Early that morning Domenic ended his long fight through a bout of sickness and was reunited with his mother (Caroline D’Ambrosio Vaccaro) and father (Domenic Francis Vaccaro Sr.).
Born December 8th, 1949 to Caroline and Domenic Vaccaro Sr., Domenic lived his adventurous young life in Hamden, CT with his two siblings Gaetano Thomas Vaccaro and Carol Ann Gaetano along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends nearby.
After graduating from Hamden High School, Domenic completed the two year program at the Connecticut School of Electronics. These studies would serve him well later in life.
Domenic took a special interest in cars at a very young age. One of his most cherished memories was building a T-Bucket Hot rod from just the motor. Dom’s love for hot rods and cars lead him to become a mechanic for over 15 years, surrounding himself with his passion.
Along with his love for cars Dom enjoyed riding up the coast on his Harley with his close friends. Before Domenic became a family man and retired his riding garb, he and some close friends founded the Shoreline Street Rods, putting on hot rod events in the area and raising money for local businesses. When describing his time in the Shoreline Street Rods Dom would say it felt like a life time ago but, as his close friends and family know, it left a lasting impact on his life, accompanied by a lot of crazy stories.
The technical skills he gained as a mechanic in combination with his exceptional intelligence brought him to his true career path as an owner and operator of Shoreline Computers. In 1983 Domenic and his wife Donna Marie (Ficorilli) Vaccaro founded Shoreline Computers, which they ran for over 30 years. Computers being a challenge that most were afraid to tackle at the time didn’t stop Dom’s technical mind, and curiosity for how things worked.
Some would say building and operating Shoreline Computers was a part of Domenic’s greatest accomplishments. He would tell you otherwise. Forever proud of his 3 children, Domenic would proclaim his true greatest accomplishments were his girls, Danielle Marie Vaccaro Russell, Deanna Marie Vaccaro, and Dana Marie Vaccaro. Domenic was also joyfully “Grampa” to his one grandchild Owen Russell.
Dom was a hard worker, strong willed, and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and was a strong conversationalist with a dry sense of humor. He was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained through all of his life experiences and titles: Hot rod enthusiast, Biker, Mechanic, and Business owner.
Dom was predeceased by father Domenic F Vaccaro Sr., Mother Caroline D’Ambrosio, and sister Carol Ann Gaetano.
He is survived by wife Donna Marie Ficorilli Vaccaro, Brother Gaetano Thomas Vaccaro, and 3 children Danielle Marie Vaccaro Russell, Deanna Marie Vaccaro, and Dana Marie Vaccaro.
He is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews, 4 great nephews, and many of his cousins and aunts and uncles.
Dom's family will receive visitors at Shoreline Cremation 425 Main St East Haven, CT on Tuesday November 21, 2023 from 5:30PM-8:00PM. A short prayer service will be held at 745.  Burial will be private and at the convenience of his family.
