Benedict James Mozisek - March 16, 1953 - October 01, 2023

Departed: 10/01/2023 (Shiner)
Obituary Preview: Ben Mozisek was born on March 16, 1953, in Shiner to the late Rudy and Carrie Dornak Mozisek. He was the youngest of five sons. He was a member of SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.
Ben graduated from Shiner High School in 1971 and began his career as a carpenter for Mr. Ed Mraz at Mraz Lumber Company. For over ten years he continued in the trade, but cabinet making was his true talent. In 1984 he became the first employee of Boedeker Plastics after his longtime friend, Marvin Boedeker and wife Cathy moved back to Shiner to start the company. Slowly getting the business going, some days Ben did the lawn or took the car for an oil change. He built many of the racks that are still used today. He started in the saw room, then was the warehouse foreman, and finished his career in the machine shop. Ben took great pride in his work and was a loyal employee for 35 years until his retirement in 2019.
Ben married Beverly Fehner of Cheapside on October 29, 1977. They have two daughters, Amy and Allison. In 1998, Beverly finally convinced Ben to move from the country into their current home in town. At first, he was hesitant, but over the years loved being able to drive around town, whether it be to get his lotto or grab a beer at Howard’s.
Ben enjoyed hunting in the Texas Hill Country. Even though opening weekend was on a Saturday, he would head to the lease on the Thursday before to get things ready. His love of hunting was passed down to his daughters and in recent years, despite not hunting at the same place, he would call them after each hunt to ask what they had seen.
Ben enjoyed cooking, whether it be noodle soup, stew, or giblet rice. He didn’t know how to cook for a small group – on New Years Day he would make black eyed peas and family and friends would come over with containers so they could get their scoop for good luck. Ben’s luck also helped him to win many gun raffles over the years.
Ben’s family was his greatest achievement. He took pride in providing the best life for them even though he was a simple man. In 2011, his first grandchild was born, and Popo Ben became his favorite title. Emry was the best nurse when she came to visit and loved when Popo would take her to the pool in Sonny and then for ice cream at Howard’s. David loved mule rides to the park and crawling in the recliner to watch Popo’s favorite show – Tom & Jerry.
Ben is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughters Amy Dawson (Adam) of Lubbock and Allison Motal (Marcos) of Shiner. Grandchildren Emry Dawson and David Dawson. Sister-in-laws Barbara Mozisek of Bristow, VA, and Florine Mozisek of Houston. Sister-in-law and brother-in-law Betty and Edward Kurtz of Austin. Numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his in laws Edna and Elgin Fehner, and his four brothers – James, Joe, Rudy, and Pat.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Shiner Funeral Home from 4:00-7:00pm with the rosary following at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am Friday, October 6, 2023, at SS. Cyril and Methodious Catholic Church with Rev. Bryan Heyer as celebrant. Michael Joseph Pohler - November 21, 1951 - September 17, 2023

Departed: 09/17/2023 (Shiner)
Obituary Preview: Michael Joseph Pohler, of Shiner, passed on September 17, 2023, at the age of 71. Michael was born in Moulton, Texas on November 21, 1951, to Irene and Harvey Pohler, Sr. He grew up picking cotton on his family’s farm in Witting and walked (uphill, both ways) to Oak Grove School. At Moulton High School he excelled in sports, namely basketball, but a knee injury ended his long-term hoop dreams. Upon graduation he worked a few odd jobs until eventually taking over his father’s tire business. He opened Pohler Tire Center in Shiner and ran a successful tire retail business until his retirement somewhere in his 40s where he cleverly tricked his wife, Deralee, into running the business so he could focus on more important endeavors, such as landscaping and golf.
Michael enjoyed all things sports related. In his earlier days, he loved being around the diamond, whether playing tournament softball, hardball with the Shiner Clippers, or coaching his son in little league…but golf became his true passion as he aged. Pretty much a daily ritual, you could find him rabble-rousing around the Yoakum Municipal Golf Course, making friendly wagers amongst his band of merry men, always making sure each poor soul left the course with a few extra dollars in their pockets, so they could enjoy a nice, warm meal that eve.
At home he enjoyed simple things like grilling meats, landscaping around the house, and trading baseball cards and golf clubs on the interwebs. His big heart was often on display through his generosity to help others, or in the care of his pet dogs and the downtrodden stray cats he took in. If a sporting event of any type was playing on the television, you could rest assured he was using his keen intellect to berate the sportscasters on the television, regarding how they, or the players, had erred in their ways.
Around the town, with his outgoing, joking personality he was always the life of the party. If there was a dance floor present, there would be no trouble locating him, which brings us to the last day of his time here with us. A day of competing in (or against) his annual antagonist, the Yoakum Golf Association Club Championship in the morning, followed by a beautiful family wedding celebration ending in his final heart-stopping crescendo as the music finally stopped. His body giving out, like his broken golf cart still sitting on the third hole from earlier that day, the final hole of his life ends up not one he plays, but the one he leaves in the hearts of everyone he touched.
Survivors include the mother of his children, Deralee Pohler; two children, Clinton and Wendy; one grandchild, Ella; one brother, Donald Pohler (Gerrie); and two sisters-in-law, Cornelia Pohler and Vernice Pohler. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irene and Harvey Pohler, Sr; brothers, Eugene “Boyce” Pohler and Harvey Pohler, Jr; and nephew, Matthew Pohler.
The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 27 at Shiner Funeral Home, followed by a rosary at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 28 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, with the Rev. Bryan Heyer officiating. Burial will follow at the Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers: Harvey Dwayne Pohler, Jaime Pohler, Tristan Pohler, Jason Pohler, Wesley Pohler, and Craig Pohler. Honorary pallbearers are Christopher Pohler, Joshua Pohler, and Nick Pohler.

Joseph A. Soto - December 16, 1949 - March 31, 2023

Departed: 03/31/2023 (Shiner)
Obituary Preview: Joseph A. Soto, 73, passed away Friday, March 31, 2023. He was born December 16, 1949 to Juan Sr. and Maria (Dominguez) Soto.
Born in Gonzales but raised in Shiner, as a boy, Joe would help his father with various farm work. When he wasn’t doing his chores, little Joe would practice his quick draw with his toy gun for hours- some of his youngest siblings always keeping a close eye on their big brother's skills.
During his school days at St. Ludmila and St. Paul, he and his life long best friends- James Hajek and Anthony Boehm- would play tricks and cut up when they should have been doing school work. In 1969, Joe graduated from St. Paul and soon made his next venture into Law Enforcement, following in his father’s footsteps.
In 1970, Joe graduated from the San Antonio Police Academy and started off as a “beat cop”, walking the lively streets of San Antonio. At the age of 24, Joe was asked to join a special force to become a fugitive apprehension officer, one of the only ones in Texas, and traveled all over the United States. When the program was abolished, Joe made his way to work for the Sugarland Prison and while there, he met some crazy characters, learned how to make the best scrambled eggs and even “stared” in Stephen Spielberg's “The Sugarland Express” as a background guard- where he liked to jokingly say his stardom began. Soon after that venture was over, Joe began working for the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s department. While working for Fort Bend County, Joe met another life-long friend, Larry McDougal, while working extra police jobs. The two shared many stories and even years later, continued to share weekly calls, talking for hours on end.
In 1991, Joe met his one true love, Mary Denise Shields, while visiting a friend who happened to live in the same apartment complex as his future wife. As he and Denise shook hands, they shocked each other, which was when Joe knew Denise was something special. The two married and Joe became a stepfather to Denise’s son and nephew, Carlo Shields, and Nick Villalona and in 1993, welcomed a daughter, Jacklyn.
In 2000, Joe and his family moved back to his beloved hometown of Shiner, where they continued to stay. Joe began volunteering for the same school he graduated from, driving the bus for the Shiner Catholic School. After volunteering for seven years, the school insisted on adding Joe to the pay roll, where he continued to work until 2020, giving a total of 20 years of dedicated service to the school. Joe was a faithful and hardworking member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as a former Grand Knight, and District Marshall. As a Grand Knight, Joe was instrumental in facilitating the acquisition of the American Legion Hall for the present-day Knights of Columbus Park and Hall which serves the community of Shiner and SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church
Survivors include wife, Mary Denise; sons Carlo Shields (Veronica) of Haslet and Nick Villalona (Sylvia) of Houston and daughter, Jacklyn Soto of Shiner; sisters, Ofelia Perez of Harlingen and Mary Soto of Houston; brothers, Cleto Soto of Shiner and Juan Soto Jr. of Gonzales; two grandchildren, Curtis Shields (Brittney) of Fort Worth, Brianna Shields of Haslet; three great-grandchildren, Aiden Shields, Brody Gonzales and Scarlet Shields. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Robert, and Richard Soto.
A Holy Rosary will be offered at 6:30 pm Friday, April 14, 2023, in Shiner Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held April 15, 2023, at 10 am at SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with Fr. Bryan Heyer as celebrant. Private Interment will follow in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Departed: 03/17/2023 (Shiner)
Obituary Preview: Jason Pete Pilat, 47 of Shiner, passed away Friday, March 17, 2023. Jason was born March 21, 1975, in Shiner to Pete and Lois Motal Pilat. He was a life member of SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.
Jason grew up in Shiner attending school and working beside his father and siblings learning to farm, raise hogs, cattle and do all the chores to keep it all running efficiently. He took over for his dad upon his father’s passing and excelled with the knowledge he had gained from working alongside his father. He had a deep-rooted passion for farming and ranching and expanded his operations with several leases. Jason couldn’t do it alone, he had his favorite hand, his daughter, Mackinly working beside him as often as he could. It was very clear to Jason that his incredible work ethic was also a recognizable trait in his daughter. He was so proud of her and his grandson Chandler. He adored his grandson and certainly dreams of the two of them putting up hay and working cattle together one day brought pleasant hope to the future.

He was a good man, and Jason was a successful man beyond the typical measurements of success. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “To leave the world a bit better . . . To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” This was Jason and we are humbled.

Ralph Eugene Stevens - December 02, 1936 - March 16, 2023

Departed: 03/16/2023 (Shiner)
Obituary Preview: Ralph Eugene Stevens of Shiner, Texas, aged 86, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2023. He was born December 2, 1936 in Burkburnett, Texas to Virgil Vance and Elva Jane England Stevens. He enjoyed fishing and the waterfront as a young boy having spent many of his childhood years in Gregory. His family relocated to Jacksboro in his teen years, and he quickly acquired chef skills in the family-owned Brown Derby in Jacksboro and the Dixie Dog Drive In in Burkburnett.
After graduating from Jacksboro High School in 1955, he set off to Texas Tech with aspirations of being an agriculture teacher. After one semester, he returned home to take care of family responsibilities. He married the love of his life, Kathleen Roark, on April 10, 1960. He dedicated his career to his employment with Texas Electric where he retired as transmission electrical foreman in 1992. He answered the call to service by enlisting in the United States Army and Texas National Guard and served faithfully from 1963 to 1968. He and Kathy moved to Eastland in 1963. Ralph was community minded and gave selflessly to a number of organizations in the years they were raising a family. He served on the board for Bell Hurst Theatre, was devoted to the Eastland Quarterback club, coached baseball, spent countless hours mowing and caring for the fields and ultimately served as the President of the Texas Teenage Baseball Association. Once his days as a baseball dad ended, he took on the task of short order cook for the concession at the ball fields and people turned out from town nightly just for his burgers and homemade corn dogs. Ralph and Kathy also spent time supporting the 4-H program and they were honored by Eastland 4-H as Volunteer Leaders of the Year in 1990.
Once their kids were grown, Ralph and Kathy relocated to Wichita Falls in 1993 where they opened a restaurant, The Hamilton Kitchen, and ran it for a few years before moving to Gonzales in 1998. He was called back out of retirement to serve as the safety inspector for the construction of many of the windfarms in the Sweetwater area. Once his commitments were finished with the wind farms, he and Kathy relocated one last time to Shiner. They opened Sandwiches and Such Sandwich Shop, where he joyfully fed locals and visitors for several years. His greatest accomplishment was his family and the close to sixty-three years that he loved and cared for his Kathy.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents and great grandson, Colton McMillian. He is survived by his wife Kathy, daughters Jennifer Shook (Tony) of Magnolia Beach and Natalie Knesek (Tim) of Gonzales, and son Greg (Suzanne) of Colleyville and sister, Sharon Morris (Ty) of Kemp. He adored his grandchildren: Brandon, Tyler, and Ashlea McMillian; Mason, Cole, and Brooke Stevens; and Kristofer, Kathleen, and Keely Knesek and his six great-grandchildren: Chloe, Cooper, Oren, Easton and Alannah McMillian and Taylor Boatright.
More than anything he supported the endeavors of his children and grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Texas 4-H Center, Shiner Band Boosters, or a local charity that supports youth development.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, April 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Shiner Central Station. Friends may leave their condolences to the family by visiting www.shinerfuneralhome.com. Services are under the care and direction of Shiner Funeral Home.
