Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also help to notify others of the person's passing and provide details about funeral services or memorial events.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. The writer should have personal knowledge of the deceased and be able to provide accurate information about their life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, or other ways to pay tribute to the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or private websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful for readers.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and accomplishments.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other requested materials.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or online platform. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals that include additional services like photo editing or online hosting. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options for publishing an obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes! Many people choose to write their own obituary as a way to control how they are remembered and to ensure that their story is told accurately. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments.

What if I don't have all the information needed for an obituary?

If you're missing certain details about the deceased, you can try contacting relatives, friends, or former colleagues who may be able to provide additional information. You can also consider consulting public records or online archives.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the person's life that you're unsure how to address in the obituary, consider consulting with family members or close friends for guidance. It's essential to approach these topics with tact and respect for the deceased and their loved ones.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor and personal anecdotes can help bring the person to life and make the obituary more engaging and memorable. Just be sure to keep the tone respectful and avoid anything that might be offensive or inappropriate.

What if I want to publish an obituary in multiple places?

You can submit the same obituary to multiple newspapers or online platforms. Be aware that each publication may have its own formatting requirements and submission guidelines.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The time frame varies depending on the publication or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or even weeks. Be sure to check with the publication for their specific timeline.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, some online platforms may allow you to edit or update the obituary after publication.

What if I find errors in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform immediately if you discover errors in an already-published obituary. They may be able to correct the mistakes and republish the revised version.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Yes! Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can also create a memorial page or group on these platforms to honor the deceased.

How do I preserve an online obituary over time?

Saving a copy of the obituary as a PDF or printing it out can help ensure its preservation over time. You can also consider creating a permanent online memorial on a website like Legacy.com or Memoriams.com.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity or cause in lieu of sending flowers. This information can be included in the obituary along with details on how to make a donation.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary or need additional support during this difficult time, consider reaching out to a funeral home or professional writer who specializes in crafting personalized tributes.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has passed away recently but wasn't well-known publicly?

Absolutely! An obituary can be written for anyone who has passed away, regardless of their level of public recognition. It's a meaningful way to honor their memory and share their story with loved ones.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an LGBTQ+-inclusive obituary?

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems that resonate with the deceased's personality or spirit can add depth and meaning to the obituary. Just ensure they are relevant and respectful.

What if I'm unsure about what details to include in an obitary?
