Obituary Preview: Dorothy Agnes Samuelson September 1, 1942 - May 11, 2024
It is with great sadness that the family of Dorothy Agnes Samuelson of Halifax, Massachusetts, announce her passing. Dorothy passed away on Saturday, May 11th, 2024 at 81 years old surrounded by her family after a courageous fight against cancer.
Dottie is survived by her two children, Kathleen Harrison of Pembroke and partner Sean Carney, and James Ford of Hanson, and also by her six siblings, Andrew Samuelson and his wife Suzanne Tobin, Carol Porazzo, Mary Jones, Alice Grant, Margaret Dinnen and her husband Lee Dinnen, and Elizabeth Frazier and her husband William Frazier. She was a devoted grandmother of five: Courtney and her husband Mark Vercollone, Brian Harrison, Meghan Harrison, Colleen Ford and her partner Eric Anderson, and Jennifer Ford, along with two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Avery. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
To save the best for last, she is survived by her beloved Shih Tzu, Muffin Samuelson.
Dottie was born in Brockton with her six siblings and raised by her late mother and father, Dorothy and Andrew Samuelson. The former Ms. Brockton graduated high school and started her career working various jobs as a bookkeeper. She later went on to spend 15 years as the Secretary to the Chief at Braintree Fire Department. Although, her proudest accomplishment was always being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother, better known as “Grandmama”.
It is hard to put into words the amount of love and magic Grandmama brought to her family everyday, but holidays were her specialty. From her extravagant dinnerware and decorations, to her “labors of love” that were found within her hand knitted accessories, homemade apple pies, and the famous Christmas pajamas, just to name a few.
She will be fondly remembered for her attentiveness, quick wit, and family-oriented heart. She loved beyond all faults.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 21st from 4-8 PM at the Shepherd’s Funeral Home in Kingston. A burial will take place on Wednesday, May 22nd at 11 AM at the Center Cemetery on Oldham Street in Pembroke. Patrick F. Dundas - Unknown - May 10, 2024

Departed: 05/10/2024 (Kingston)
Obituary Preview: DUNDAS, Patrick Francis of Carver, MA (formerly of Duxbury, MA) died at the age of 69 on May 10, 2024. Patrick was born on August 6, 1954, in Brighton, MA to the late Robert Edmond Dundas and the late Mary Theresa (Driscoll) Dundas. Patrick served in the U.S. Air Force from 1973 to1977 before attending Central Connecticut State College where he majored in East Asian Studies with a concentration in Mandarin Chinese.
One of Patrick’s great passions was running, qualifying for every marathon he entered. When he talked of racing, he didn’t focus on the difficulty but instead told of the many strangers he quickly became friends with – whether at the Honolulu, the Okinawa, the Chicago, the New York, or his hometown – and favorite - race, the Boston Marathon. He was an independent spirit, but he was also a people person who loved to hear and tell stories – it was the Irish in him.
Patrick had a seemingly limitless curiosity – he immersed himself in reading and often had several books going at once. Irish history; astronomy; Asian language and culture; world politics; running, and aeronautics were just some of the many subjects he was drawn to, and with an encyclopedic knowledge, he would eagerly share what he knew. If the topic was politics, he was always up for a debate - it was the Irish in him.
Travel was a source of great happiness for Patrick – he loved road trips and was proud to say he had visited 49 of the 50 states and many national parks, gathering stories along the way. He would light up when recalling details of vacations in Ireland with family; his connection to an ancestry he was so proud of – the Irish in him.
Patrick put helping others before everything else. We could always count on his “What do you need?” willingness to make life easier. His unconditional love and non-judgmental outlook were gifts to everyone who knew him – it was the kindness in him.
May we live in his legacy, and may he finally see Alaska.
Patrick was a devoted and beloved son, brother, and uncle. His life is celebrated by his sisters Karen Dundas of Carver; Mary Dundas of Centerville; Eithne Dundas (Mark Endresen) of Duxbury; Imelda Dundas (Nathaniel Smith), of Kingston; his nieces Monica Joyce (Toby); Caroline Dundas (Ryan McGonagle); Tessa and Emmeline Endresen; his great- niece and great-nephews Josiah, Samuel, Mabel, Hayden, and Dylan Joyce, and many cherished cousins.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the empathetic care Patrick received from all of the staff at Hebrew Rehabilitation at NewBridge in Dedham, MA. Family and friends are invited to Patrick's Graveside Service Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. in Mayflower Cemetery, 774 Tremont Street, Duxbury, MA. A reception will follow the service. Wylie Winfield Barrow Jr. - Unknown - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (Kingston)
Obituary Preview: Wylie Winfield Barrow, Jr. passed peacefully on April 23, 2024, filled with the love of his family and friends. At 88, he was still a beloved character with a great sense of humor. Somewhere in the heavens right now, his bugle can be heard blowing his signature charge calls.
Born on September 19, 1935 to Wylie Sr. and Mary (McQueen) Barrow, Wylie grew up in Washington, DC, attending Randolph-Macon Academy in high school, then starting at Roanoke College, and graduating from George Washington University in 1958 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Like his father, he was active in Sigma Chi fraternity, serving as chapter president his senior year. He was also a founding member of the “Original Eight” at GWU, starting the Crew program there in 1956. He earned an MBA from Northeastern University in 1966 after taking night classes for four years, all while raising three small children. He was a registered Professional Engineer (PE) specializing in water purification technologies.
While working at his first job at RCA just outside of Philadelphia in 1958, Wylie met the love of his life, Helen Storey, on a blind date, which marked the beginning of 66 amazing years together. They married in 1960 and moved to Massachusetts two years later to start raising their family of three children, Michael, Jeffrey, and Lynda. In 1971 they moved from their home in Chelmsford to Duxbury, MA, and Wylie spent two decades as Vice President of Operations at Vaponics in Plymouth, MA designing and engineering customized water purification equipment. Eventually he opened his own consulting firm, Winfield Associates, and continued to practice his craft until well into his 70’s. His trusty boat, the Ole Wazoo, was always either in the driveway being prepped for the season or in the water trying to catch fish.
Wylie was a gifted woodworker and handyman who was constantly building things for the home and yard in his basement workshop. He had a green thumb and love for vegetable gardening, generously sharing his bountiful harvest with neighbors and friends. He was an accomplished home brewer, crafting many batches of Gym Brew IPA with his weight lifting buddies.
Wylie loved youth sports, and coached all three of his children over many years during the 1970’s in Duxbury in football, basketball, softball, and baseball. He adored watching his 5 grandchildren compete and perform in multiple sports and activities, and we cherish the memories of him blowing charge at our games, events, and graduations. In later years, he volunteered with Project Gurnet and Bug Lights. In 2012, he was honored as a recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his decades of volunteering in Duxbury. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, son, uncle, grandfather, coach, leader, friend, and neighbor.
Wylie is survived by his loving family, including his wife Helen of Duxbury, MA, his children Michael Barrow of Denver, CO, Jeffrey (Donna) Barrow of Marshfield, MA, and Lynda (David) Whyte of Plymouth MA, his grandchildren Stephen, Brian, & Jessica Whyte, David & Katherine Barrow, and his two sisters Jane (Ditty) Barrow and Marilyn (Lyndie) Sutherland. We will continue to remember him when using his many unique “Wylieisms” that were spoken best by him, including: “How's your ole wazoo?” “I'm tellin’ Helen!” “Nurse I'm worse!”

Eleanor McKenna Hendren - April 30, 1926 - March 18, 2024

Departed: 03/18/2024 (Kingston)
Obituary Preview: Eleanor McKenna Hendren (1926 - 2024)
Eleanor died peacefully Monday, March 18th, a few weeks short of her 98th birthday.
Known affectionately as "Yaya" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and "Ellie" to her friends, Eleanor presided for nearly 50 years over their busy home in Duxbury, hosting family weddings, countless birthday and anniversary celebrations. She loved her plants and flowers indoors and out, especially her beautiful rose garden on Duxbury Bay, where many a grandchild learned how to swim, sail and water-ski off the dock.
Eleanor Frances McKenna was born in Windsor, Ontario April 30, 1926 to Scottish immigrants Muriel (nee Grant) and William "Willie" McKenna. Willie was an engineer with DuPont in Toronto and then Wilmington, Delaware. In the 1930s, his work-travel to Germany included supplying the US government with intelligence on the Nazi war buildup. On vacation in Scotland one summer, Eleanor remembered her father's abrupt return from Germany with news about the U-boat danger. The family, now including her little brother Douglas, was on the next boat back to the States. They also lived for a time in Hanford, Washington, where Willie worked on the Manhattan Project.
Eleanor graduated from Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington, DC, and then worked as a stewardess for Trans World Airlines. In 1946, invited to a football weekend at Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, she met W. Hardy Hendren, III. Immediately attracted to Eleanor's lovely singing voice and her sense of humor, Hardy always told the family that he announced on their very first date she was the girl he was going to marry. They were married in early 1947, remaining together for 75 years, until Hardy’s death in 2022.
The newlyweds returned to Dartmouth College to complete Hardy's undergraduate degree and begin medical school. Starting their lives together in the paper-thin walls of married student housing, Eleanor sewed and sold fishing-lure neckties to put food on the table. An energetic homemaker, she also supported her husband’s innovative medical ideas right from the start. She recalled stitching together a working prototype for a mechanical compression stocking; an idea that became commercially available decades later, and is widely used today. Their first child and only daughter, Sandra McLeod, was born during their time at Dartmouth.
They moved to Boston in 1950, where Hardy completed medical school, followed by training in general surgery and pediatric surgery. The family grew steadily, with Douglas Hardy in 1950, William Grant in 1953, Robert Bruce in 1957 and David Fraser in 1960. With the demands of Hardy's work building a department of pediatric surgery at the MGH, Eleanor embraced the challenge of raising five children, running a busy household, and being a consummate hostess at home in Chestnut Hill.
Eleanor and Hardy's lifelong commitment to education was evident as their children pursued careers in nursing, law, and three surgical specialties. Their most difficult parenting challenge was seeing their daughter Sandy diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, and the complications that took her life at age 37.
In later years, Hardy's work attracted patients and surgeons from all over the world. Eleanor revealed an amazing ability to add places at her table on a moment’s notice. She graciously hosted hordes of visiting surgeons, who sometimes stayed for weeks at a time to learn Hardy's techniques. As her children started going away to school, Eleanor and her lifelong friend Anne Browne started Cycle Venture, Inc., manufacturing and marketing clothing of their own design. Cycle grew into a nationwide business, which they sold in 1999. Their product line grew from a women’s “tennis kilt” to a broader line of sports apparel popular with amateur and professional tennis players, and women’s scholastic and collegiate lacrosse and field hockey teams across the US. As kilts enjoyed a popularity boom, Cycle was featured in the New York Times fashion section. Their kilt even became popular with men, including being worn on stage by the lead singer in a popular hard rock band!
Eleanor had a natural flair for singing and dancing, and in her youth briefly considered a career in theater. She was a perennial star in musical productions by the Vincent Club of Boston, and later in many Duxbury Yacht Club shows. She thoroughly enjoyed putting her costume collection to use, greeting neighbors on occasion as a witch, an Easter bunny, or even appearing in a full-sized gorilla suit, distributing bananas to unsuspecting neighbors or guests. Her genius for hospitality shone at the annual summer Children's Hospital family gathering. To the delight of children of all ages, the Duxbury Beach ice cream truck would appear in her driveway, and Ellie picked up the tab.
An avid athlete, Eleanor ran three miles a day in her prime. In her later years, she made it a priority to circumnavigate the neighborhood daily on her walker. While failing vision slowed her down, Eleanor remained active to the very end, supported by a wonderful team of caregivers. The family is deeply grateful for their support, surrounding Eleanor with kindness, competence and unfailing good cheer.
Eleanor survived husband Hardy (d. 2022) and daughter Sandy (d.1984). She is survived by Douglas and Nancy Beall Hendren of Harrisonburg, VA, William and Linda Hendren of Duxbury, MA, Robert and Dominique Hendren of Goshen, KY, and David and Astrid Hendren, of Plymouth, MA, as well as eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m.at St. John the Evangelist Church, 410 Washington St. in Duxbury.
