Departed: 03/18/2024 (Chicago)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Aagaard died peacefully on Monday night, March 18, 2024, after a prolonged illness and a life well lived. Sharon leaves behind her loving husband Kevin Aagaard, her beloved daughter Elizabeth (Liz) Vieth, her treasured granddaughter Lia Vieth, and many in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews, and good friends.
Sharon was born in the former St. Ann’s Hospital in Chicago on April 2, 1952, the only child of Lillian (Koziol) and Louis Rypel. After her mother’s death in June 1960, Sharon welcomed a wonderful stepmother into her life in November 1962: Mildred/Millie (Smoucha) Rypel. Millie died in October 1972. Louis died in November 1991.
For her professional life, Sharon chose to work as a medical technician and then as an X-ray technologist. Sharon’s love of people was vibrantly alive with her family, friends, patients, and students. She enjoyed a special place in the world whenever she and Kevin were at their get-away home in Wisconsin.
In short, nothing captures who Sharon Aagaard was more than these simple descriptors: selfless, kind, and a genuinely good person.

Yet another side of Rose Marie were her many celebrity trivia tidbits in conversation. A natural athlete, she enjoyed a variety of sports. LaVergne A Cegelsk - June 22, 1936 - July 16, 2023

Departed: 07/16/2023 (Chicago)
Obituary Preview: LaVergne was a life-long Chicagoan. She never had a driver’s license, but that did not stop her from getting all around the city by bus, subway, or taxi. Born at home, in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, she attended Lafayette grammar school and Tuley High School. She worked at Marshall Fields department store downtown until getting married and starting a family. As a young woman, LaVergne enjoyed dancing to big band and rock n’ roll music and often attended dance halls around the city to dance the night away, with her sister Martha and other friends, which is how she met her husband Ron, near his Mayfair neighborhood. They married at St. Genevieve Church and started their married life in the Avondale neighborhood (St. Viator’s parish). After 10 years they bought their family home in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood (St. Ladislaus parish).
As a mom, LaVergne actively volunteered at her children’s schools’ PTA organizations. After becoming a grandmother, she continued to “tour” around the city when her grandchildren were young, often using public transportation to find all the fun and interesting places to visit around Chicagoland. LaVergne played the violin in her Tuley High School orchestra and had again been taking lessons as a retiree. She was a wonderful artist with an eye for creating colorful pictures. She especially enjoyed painting with water colors or helping her grandchildren with their coloring books. After becoming a widow 34 years ago, LaVergne lived the best life she could with the help of her sisters, children and grandchildren. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, funeral or memorial service details, and surviving family members. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of a person's life. They also help to notify others of the person's passing and provide information about funeral or memorial services.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may offer assistance with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), occupation, hobbies, achievements, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and within 200-500 words. This allows for a brief summary of the person's life without overwhelming readers with too much information.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to upload photos to accompany the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other requested materials.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments, and can also spare loved ones from having to write it during a difficult time.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers, genealogy websites, or local libraries. Many libraries also maintain microfilm records of past newspapers that can be searched manually.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections or edits can be made to an online obituary. However, printed obituaries in newspapers are typically final and cannot be altered once they've been published.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or even weeks to review and post the obituary.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, poems, or lyrics can add a personal touch to the obituary and help celebrate the person's life.

Should I include the cause of death in an obituary?

This is optional and ultimately up to the family's discretion. Some people prefer to include this information as a way of raising awareness about a particular disease or condition, while others may choose not to disclose this detail.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an online obituary, contact the website or funeral home directly to request corrections. For printed obituaries, it may be more challenging to make changes, but you can try contacting the newspaper's corrections department.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable organizations or memorial funds that were important to their loved one. This can serve as a meaningful way to continue their legacy.

How do I write an obituary for someone who was private or had a complicated life?

This can be a sensitive topic. It's essential to approach the task with empathy and respect for the person's privacy. Focus on celebrating their positive qualities and accomplishments while being mindful of any sensitive information that may be best left unshared.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you may be able to republish an old obituary online. Be sure to check copyright laws and regulations before doing so.

How do I share an obituary on social media?

Most online obituary platforms provide easy sharing options for social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You can also copy and paste the link to share with friends and family.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of someone's passing, often including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed biographical information and is often longer in length.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has no immediate family?

Absolutely! Friends, colleagues, or caregivers may choose to write an obituary as a way of honoring someone who didn't have immediate family members.

How do I handle multiple marriages or complex family relationships in an obituary?

This can be a delicate situation. It's essential to approach it with sensitivity and tact. Consider consulting with family members or friends who were close to the person to ensure that all relationships are acknowledged respectfully.

Can I include humor or lighthearted anecdotes in an obituary?

Yes! Obituaries don't have to be somber affairs. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate the person's personality and spirit.

What is the purpose of publishing an obituary online?

Publishing an obituary online makes it easily accessible to friends, family, and acquaintances who may not have access to local newspapers. It also provides a permanent digital record of the person's life.

Can I create a video obituary?

Yes! Some online platforms allow you to create multimedia tributes that combine text, images, music, and video clips. These video obituaries can be shared on social media or embedded on memorial websites.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

An obituary is just one part of preserving your loved one's legacy. Consider creating a memory book, scrapbook, or online memorial where friends and family can share stories and memories over time.
