Obituary Preview: Elizabeth (nee Szurlej) Komurek, 75, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Alaris of West Orange, NJ. She was born in Lutcza, Poland and emigrated to the US in 1969 and resided in Ironbound Section of Newark, NJ.
Elizabeth worked for Temco Services in Newark, NJ for 25 years, retiring many years ago. She was a devout Catholic and attended St. Casimir Church in Newark as well as Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Kearny. From early age she had to work hard for everything. Coming to the country with nothing she was very proud of what she was able to accomplish.
While she had missed her family dearly in Poland, she knew the United States was where she belonged, even becoming a US citizen in 2000. She loved to gather and laugh with her family, especially her grandchildren, and friends here with her amazing baking and cooking. She enjoyed visiting many attractions in New Jersey, but loved visiting the Pennsylvania countryside more, away from the city. Being at home, especially in her beautiful garden, alongside her feline companion Donny, brought her much joy over the years. Sewing, holiday decorating, managing her properties and challenging her children are just some of the other things that she excelled in. Elizabeth loved her children and her home was everything to her. She will forever be remembered in our hearts.
Devoted and loving mother of Mariola Komurek-De Matos, Christopher Komurek and Robert Komurek; dear grandmother of Katlynn, Kristen and Kayleen De Matos; predeceased by 2 siblings and survived by 6 siblings in Poland.

Manuel Naveiras - November 15, 1958 - December 20, 2023

Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Manuel Naveiras on Wednesday, December 20, 2023. He died too young at the age of 65 years old. Born in Havana, Cuba, Manuel was the youngest of four children born to Pedro and Elisa Naveiras. After migrating to the United States, he was educated and then enlisted into the 101st Airborne Division of the Army at the age of 17 at the top of his class, Marksman. After serving his country from 1975 to 1977, Manuel was honorably discharged. He graduated from St. Peter’s College with a bachelor’s degree in Jersey City, NJ. He married and raised two beautiful sons in Lansford, PA. Manuel loved exploring the world traveling to Spain, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico and more.
Manuel is lovingly survived by his sister Josefa Naveiras, and his sons Manuel Charles Naveiras and Anthony Naveiras. He was predeceased by his siblings, Pedro Naveiras, Jr. and Elisa Naveiras. Gracefully, he was able to travel the world and his love for adventure was like no other. May he always be in our hearts and rest in peace. Heaven is shining bright as one of their own is finally home.
All services will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024. The viewing will be at the Shaw-Buyus Home for Services 138 Davis Ave., at Bergen Avenue, Kearny, NJ 07032 from 9:00am – 10:30am in Kearny, NJ 07032. He was a cement finisher/ foreman for the Heavy and General Construction Laborers Local 472 of Newark for many years until retiring.
Loving husband of the late Colette Louise Costa Paiva; son of the late Antonio Cosme De Paiva and Valentina Lopes Da Cunha; devoted and loving father of Antonio (Tony) Paiva and his wife Fatima, Maria Paiva and her husband Antonio (Tony) Reis, Blantina (Lidia) Jones and Antoinette Paiva; dear brother of Maria Paiva and husband Antonio Silva, Deolinda Paiva, and the late Antonio, Mario, Daniel, Albano Paiva, Celeste and her husband João Marquinhos; also survived by his beloved 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; loving grandfather of the late Anthony Paiva, Jr.

She loved sharing pictures of her family, food she proudly made, and anything that filled her heart with joy.
Beloved wife of 46 years of Antonio De Sousa Almeida; devoted and loving mother of Michelle Cruz (her husband Nelson) and Paulo Almeida (his wife Sophia); dear sister of Manuel Fernandes and Antonio Fernandes (both of Portugal); cherished grandmother of Alexander Cruz and Gabriella Cruz; Mariana is also survived by her many dear relatives and friends.

She was currently a proud member and treasurer of the Our Lady of Fatima Society at Holy Cross Church of Harrison.
