Departed: 05/08/2024 (Fairfield)
Obituary Preview: Suzanne Helen Schwab Torok, of Fairfield, passed peacefully on May 8, 2024 at the age of 92. Sue will be best remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend; a gentle woman of quiet, yet determined strength, lightly peppered with an independent streak, and a sense of adventure.
Sue was born August 11, 1931 at Wesley Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL to the late John J. Schwab and Catherine Tunison Schwab. She was reared in Western Springs, IL where the family were faithful members of All Saints Episcopal Church. Sue learned to play golf and piano during this time, interests that she pursued for the rest of her life.
Sue graduated from Lyons Township High School in 1949. She attended the University of Colorado, Boulder, graduating in 1953, with a B.A. in Sociology. While there, she learned and fell in love with downhill skiing, and joined Pi Beta Phi Sorority and was elected president of her sorority her senior year. She enrolled in the Moser School of Business in Chicago and upon graduation, was hired by Leo Burnett Advertising Co. as an executive secretary on the Marlboro account.
Sue met her husband, Robert “Bob” Torok, while visiting her brother and sister-in-law at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina. They were married September 29, 1956, in Western Springs, IL. After his military service, they moved to Connecticut, finally settling in Fairfield, to what would become a beloved family residence on Samp Mortar Lake. Sue’s last residence was in Simsbury, to be near, and cared for, by her daughter, Sarah, and son-in-law, Charlie.
Sue and Bob had four daughters over the course of 14 years; she enjoyed being a mother and homemaker. She also enjoyed pursuing her interests and friendships through golfing in the woman’s league at Smith Richardson Golf Course, playing bridge with neighbors, and singing in the choir at St Paul’s Episcopal Church. Sue volunteered her time often, both at church and school, and served one year as PTA president. Boating on Long Island Sound was a large part of Sue and Bob’s life; they were members of Milford Yacht Club and Cedar Point Yacht Club. Winter activities included family ski trips in New England. As a couple, they enjoyed entertaining friends and family in their home, participating in bridge clubs, organizing neighborhood block parties and progressive dockside dinner parties, vacationing on sailboats with friends, traveling around the world, and making time to visit those they loved. Sue’s quick wit, open and generous spirit, and unconditional love and support will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Sue is survived by her four loving daughters: Dori Clough (Paul), Catey Hale (Douglass), Sarah Neagoy (Charlie) and Amy Carey (Ryan); grandchildren: Jessica Clough O’Reilly (Matt), Pam Clough (Austin Jones); Graham (Emily), Alex and Elizabeth Hale; Grace and Evelyn Neagoy; Grant and Ethan Carey; great-grandson, Finn O’Reilly; brother-in-law, Tony Harley; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Torok Neiger (Edward), and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
In addition to her loving husband of 63 years, Sue is preceded in death by her brother, John Schwab Jr. and his wife Jeanne; sister, Dorothy Harley; sister-in-law Bernice Torok Huyser and her husband Jan Huyser; and nephew, Jake Harley.
A Eucharist Service to celebrate Sue’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the Church of the Apostles, 2385 Park Ave, in Bridgeport, located within the Rodeph Sholom Synagogue. Friends can greet her family from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service.

Departed: 04/24/2024 (Fairfield)
Obituary Preview: Joannes Dioses, 39 of Weston, loving husband and doting father, passed away suddenly on April 24, 2024, while traveling for work. He was a kind-hearted, selfless, and generous man.
Joannes (“Juan Pablo”) was born in Lima, Peru, and was known in his neighborhood for carrying around his chess set and challenging relatives and neighbors, old and young alike, to a game. He was truthful to a fault, sometimes getting relatives in trouble for repeating things he had overheard. Always playful, he loved “Carnaval,” a week-long celebration of indulgence preceding lent, where he relished in ambushing neighbors with water balloons. He attended Catholic school ran by nuns of the Dominican Order who often remarked on his prowess in math.
Joannes migrated with his family to the United States when he was 9 years old. He assimilated to life in the States quickly in great part thanks to our loving extended family who already lived here and with whom we celebrated many special occasions. He attended Norwalk public schools and graduated from Brien McMahon High School where he made lifelong friendships. He was a very loving son and brother who made his family proud with his academic achievements. He was also a diehard Knicks fan who idolized Patrick Ewing as a child.
Joannes loved his time in undergraduate school at the University of Connecticut where the enthusiasm for basketball and fanfare were perfect for him. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and worked as a research associate at Kemira for two years. Although he enjoyed the intrigue of chemistry, his penchant for numbers would lead him to pursue a Master of Business Administration in Accounting from Fairfield University. During his time at Fairfield University, he found an internship at Acme United Corporation that turned into a successful career there. His talent was recognized by the company, and he worked his way from a Business Associate to Vice-President of Operations, Finance and Integrations.
He met the love of his life, Lisa, 14 years ago and they explored many corners of the world in each other’s company. They built a beautiful life together in Weston. He adored his daughter, Pearl, who was the center of his universe. Unicorns, fairies and butterflies became part of his everyday vocabulary. Her love for art led him to hone his drawing skills. Cheerleading for her during swim meets became his new hobby. He was generous with his love and time with all who knew him. While adults mingled at family celebrations, he would find time to play hide-and-seek or chess with his daughter and nephews.
Although he is no longer with us, his fun-loving, dependable, and thoughtful nature will not be soon forgotten. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Dioses, daughter, Pearl, and parents, Carlos and Julia Susan Dioses, as well as his sister Karem Friedman, her husband, Tamir, and nephews, Ari and Zev.

W. Derek Buckley, PhD - December 11, 1939 - March 26, 2024

Departed: 03/26/2024 (Fairfield)
Obituary Preview: Derek Buckley, PhD, 84, of Easton, the beloved husband and soulmate of Val Buckley for over 63 years, passed away peacefully at his home on March 26, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Derek was born in Manchester, England to the late David and Lillian Buckley. He was a graduate of the Houldsworth School of Applied Science at Leeds University and had a doctorate in physics, math and nuclear science. Derek studied the efficiency of thermoelectric generators and his research included the study of such diversified subjects as global warming, semiconductors and even included joint patents on X-ray lithography. Derek met Val in Leeds, England in 1960 and they were married in 1961.
In 1968, Derek was invited to work on a United States government project at General Dynamics in Rochester, New York and after a year and a half of service and the end of his contract, he and Val decided to make the U.S. their home. From New York they moved to Troy, Michigan, where Derek joined the famous scientist, Dr. Stanford Ovshinsky and continued as a research scientist for five years. Derek then started his 25-year career at PerkinElmer in Norwalk, where he became Vice President of Research and was awarded joint patents in X-ray lithography. It was at this same time that he and Val made Easton their home and where they raised their children. Derek’s other roles were Vice President of Penn Central Corporation, where he had the task of restructuring the business and he retired as President of Qualcorp Corporation in Danbury.
Post retirement, Derek was fascinated by government and successfully ran for office as Easton Town Clerk. He was inspired to reorganize and streamline the office and created paperwork and programs such as marriage forms, dog licenses and many other useful references for town clerks. Much of his work was recognized and used by other towns in Connecticut.
Derek was a man of ethics and incredible honesty and expected the same when he dealt with those who had business dealings with him. He had a great sense of wit and an encyclopedic memory and always had an awesome dialogue with anyone on any subject. He was a most remarkable guy and a wonderful husband who adored his children and all eight grandchildren. He always took time off from work to watch his children's and grandchildren’s activities and sports. He loved and was an avid fan of English soccer and watched Manchester United games all his life.
Derek’s most adamant desire was to carry on his father’s wish to make sure that all his children and grandchildren would have the opportunity to attend university. His wish has become a reality as the last two grandchildren have only a few years to complete high school with plans to go to college.
Derek was an avid reader and studied the leaders of the world. His favorite readings were those of William Shakespeare, Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. He was incredibly supportive of the Easton Senior Center and spent many years taking seniors on trips through Canada, the United States and Europe.
One of his proudest achievements was that at the young age of 55, he constructed several graphs to analyze medical test results that indicated his need to seek additional care for prostate cancer well before traditional medicine would have suggested the same. He later went on to use this information to educate other men in this age group and he credited the treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering for allowing him to live and enjoy his grandchildren and family for many additional years.
In addition to his wife, Val Buckley, Derek is survived by his two children, Karen-Marie Buckley of Durham, and Paul Derek Buckley and his wife Adriana Buckley of England. He will also be missed by his eight cherished grandchildren, Connor and his new wife Christina, Brennan, Duncan, Dalton, Sophia, Tristan, Sebastian and David; and his brother David and his wife Anne of Australia and their grown children, Alison and David.
Friends are invited to greet his family on Friday, April 12, 2024, from 3:00 – 5:30 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. meeting directly at Notre Dame of Easton, 655 Morehouse Road. Interment will follow in Aspetuck Cemetery in Easton. A recording of the Mass can be viewed by following this link.

David Howard Jepsen - May 17, 1959 - March 14, 2024

Departed: 03/14/2024 (Fairfield)
Obituary Preview: David “Dave” Howard Jepsen, 64, of Stratford, CT, also known as “Oscar”, “O”, “Jeb”, “Beautiful”, or “Papa J”, passed away suddenly on March 14, 2024, after suffering a heart attack in his winter retirement home in Brownsville, TX,
David was predeceased by his father, James Howard Jepsen. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lauri Jisonna Jepsen, his mother Jean Jepsen, and his sister Laura Bastian (Steve), both of Waterford. David is also survived by his children: Lawrence “LJ” Jepsen, Jennifer Jepsen (Frank Giulietti), Ryan Jepsen (Emily), Sara Jepsen, all of Stratford, and bonus daughter, Ellen Cervone (Thomas) of Watkinsville, Georgia. He will be sorely missed by his in-laws, Lawrence and Barbara Jisonna of Stratford, CT/Brownsville, TX, his sister-in-law Leanne Small (David) of Stratford and his numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
David was born on May 17, 1959, in Bridgeport and raised in Fairfield. He graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School in 1977. During high school, while known as “Oscar”, he volunteered for the Southport Fire Department at 16 years old and that’s where he found his calling. Being one of the few volunteers at the high school with a driver’s license, David was the designated driver for the other high school volunteers who would all pile in his Opel station wagon for fire calls. After graduating, he worked at Hemlock Hardware in Fairfield, where he became fascinated with tools and learned how to use them to fix small machines and engines, a skill he honed throughout his life.
In 1979, David was hired by the Fairfield Fire Department and became a member of IAFF Local 1426. He loved every aspect of the job from supplies to dispatching. When he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1996, he truly enjoyed teaching and sharing his experiences. During his 33-year career, he was rarely without a story to tell. David fought fires even on his last day with the department, when he responded to a mutual aid call for a fire in Bridgeport. He retired as an acting Assistant Chief in December of 2012.
It was during his time as a firefighter that he met Lauri, who would become his best friend and partner in crime. Before they started dating, Lauri set him up on a blind date, but the date changed her mind. So, Lauri met David at the venue to explain and the two of them hit it off. They married in 1990 and settled in Stratford to raise their family.
David loved his family beyond measure and could be found taking his mom shopping, watching Avatar, the Last Airbender with his children, driving late at night to 7-11 for “snacky snacks”, building costumes, cutting lawns while wearing earphones listening to podcasts or Genesis and sharing a love of animals with his sister.
He spent countless hours volunteering for his kids’ activities, from t-ball to school plays. He participated in the Stratford YMCA Indian Guide and Princess Program for 20 years from 1996 – 2016. He loved helping them build boats and cars. He enjoyed camping, fishing and driving in the parades. He was also a devoted volunteer for the Bunnell-Stratford Marching Band & Guard, from 2005-present, long after his children graduated.
After he retired, David began working at Home Depot and then Mike’s Repair Shop in Fairfield. He also worked on small engines for friends and local residents. At the Palm Resaca Park, where he and Lauri spent their winters, he found his last small engine obsession, repairing golf carts for neighbors and became known as the “Golf Cart Guru”.
Friends, family, and colleagues will remember David for his dry sense of humor. Many of whom often heard him ask Lauri, “Hey Hun, did I tell you today, that I love you?” And when she’d answer “no”, he’d yell, “GOOD!” to the hysterics of all those around.
David was incredibly talented, incredibly funny and incredibly loved, and will be dearly missed by all.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2024, 4:00 -7:00 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Rd. in Fairfield. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, April 19, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Scandinavian Club, 1351 South Pine Creek Rd. in Fairfield.

Deette Pierson Higgins - January 01, 1935 - February 06, 2024

Departed: 02/06/2024 (Fairfield)
Obituary Preview: It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Deette (DeeDee) Pierson Higgins, age 89, of Fairfield, Connecticut and Amelia Island, Florida, beloved wife of Dr. Kenneth Elliott Higgins. DeeDee passed away peacefully on February 6, 2024, with her family by her side. She was born in Pittsford, NY, to Esther and Mitchell Pierson and was the sister to Mitchell and Gaylord Pierson.
DeeDee attended and graduated from Madeira School in Virginia and Bennett College in New York, where she majored in Modern Dance. She lived a full life spending her childhood and young adulthood riding her beloved horses at Kolaneka Farms and High Point, frequently competing in horse shows and fox hunting with the Genesee Valley Hunt Club.
On September 7, 1957, she married the love of her life, Kenneth Elliott Higgins. The couple started their life together in New Hampshire, where their three children were born and then moved to Fairfield in 1963.
DeeDee and Ken valued novel experiences for themselves and their children with many memorable adventures traveling to Block Island, weekends skiing in Vermont with family and friends, and trips to Grand Cayman, to name a few. Her hallmark quick wit brought laughter and joy to those around her and her clever remarks and humorous anecdotes added warmth and levity to every occasion.
Dance was not just a passion for DeeDee, but a form of expression that brought her immense joy. Growing up, DeeDee and her siblings learned many styles of ballroom dance, her family often spontaneously dancing at night after dinner at their home, High Point. Her graceful movements and rhythmic steps were a testament to her love for the art form and it was always a special treat to watch DeeDee and her family on the dance floor at every family celebration.
Sports were also major part of DeeDee’s life. Accomplished at tennis, golf and skiing, she was a consistent supporter of her children at all their team competitions. She was well-known for enthusiastic vocal support, spirited discussions with the referees and a signature whistle that could be heard above the crowds and across the fields.
Everything in DeeDee's life could lead to singing a song or a jingle. From mundane tasks to special occasions, her voice filled the air with joy and harmony. Growing up, DeeDee enjoyed friendly singing competitions with her brother Mitchell, showcasing their endless knowledge of songs most of us had never heard of. These memories of laughter and music remained close to her heart throughout her life.
Ken and Deedee's home became the heart of our family's celebrations, where every holiday was infused with laughter, song, and the warmth of their love. Their gatherings were a symphony of joy, filled with delicious meals, spirited dancing, and playtime with the grandchildren.
DeeDee is survived by sister Gay Pierson; her three children, Kenneth Higgins, Jr. and his wife Brinker, Kari Higgins Pander, and Mitch Higgins and his wife Elizabeth (Bitsy); 5 grandchildren, to whom she was known as “Nonnie”, Elliott Higgins, Eliza Higgins Grabis, Taylor Pierson McGovern, Ryan Brittany Pander, Whitney Higgins Pander; and two great grandchildren, Charlie Mitchell McGovern and Bodie Pierson McGovern. DeeDee was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Mitchell Pierson, Jr. Always a beacon of light and love, DeeDee’s last words were “I love you more.”
We will miss you, DeeDee. We always knew where home was with you. And through the values you’ve instilled in us and your demonstration of a purposeful life well-lived, you live on.
We love you more, DeeDee.
