It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help notify people of the person's passing, share details about their life, and provide information about funeral services and memorial donations.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or online obituary platforms may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a nice way to personalize the obituary and help people remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper?

Can I write my own obituary before I pass away?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication or platform. For newspapers, it's usually within 1-3 days after submission. Online obituary platforms often publish immediately or within a few hours.
