Phillip L. Meade - October 17, 1948 - November 30, 2021

Departed: 11/30/2021 (Fountaintown)
Obituary Preview: Reverend Phillip L. Meade, 73, met his beloved Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 30th, 2021, after complications from diabetes and heart disease. He passed away peacefully with his wife by his side at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis, IN.
Pastor Meade, as he was lovingly known to the thousands who sat under his ministry over the years, was born on October 17, 1948 in McLeansboro, Illinois to Charles P. and Lucille Meade. He was raised deep in the farmlands of southern Illinois along with his older brothers Gary and Charlie and younger sister Rebecca. Eventually the family made their way to Indiana and Phil made his way into a certain young lady’s heart named Sandra Grigsby. Well, maybe it was the perfectly thrown snowball that made its way to the back of her head, but either way, Phil definitely made an impression! They were married on July 30, 1966, and had been married for 55 “wonnnderfullll years”, as Pastor Meade liked to announce with a very special and loud emphasis on the word wonderful.
Pastor Meade faithfully served in ministry for over 50 years. Early in their marriage, he and Sandra moved to Ft. Worth, Texas, where he served as youth pastor at Grace Temple for 4 years. After their time in Texas, they moved back to Indiana, settling in Greenfield. Pastor Meade joined the staff at Calvary Temple of Indianapolis, serving as Associate Pastor/Family Life Pastor for over 35 years. He also provided marriage and premarital counseling to hundreds of couples over many years. He and Sandra traveled the world sharing the gospel of Christ to Venezuela, Malawi, Costa Rica and China. Pastor Meade was honored to have been the keynote speaker at the General Council for the countries of Romania and America Samoa. He served on the board of Indianapolis Teen Challenge and was the Section 8 Executive Presbyter of the Assemblies of God. He was not only known as Pastor to many, but as a counselor, friend, Dad, and Papa to many others who counted Phil among family. We were honored to have shared him with so many others who loved him as we did.
Phil is survived by his loving wife of over 55 years, Sandra Kay Grigsby Meade, sons Phillip L. (Kelly) Meade II, Reverend Perry T. (Melissa) Meade, daughter Sarah K. (Lt. Col. Chad) Tice, grandchildren Morgan Meade, Victoria (Jackson) Schwier, Chloe Meade, Valyn Tice and Levi Tice, and a new great-granddaughter, Andi Kay Schwier. He is also survived by his brother, Gary (Karen) Meade, and sister Rebecca (Steven) Rehfuss, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles P. Meade and Lucille Meade, and brother Charles L. Meade. Visitation will be on Friday, December 3, 2021 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm at Church 52, 8220  Brookville Road Indianapolis 46239
A private family visitation will be held at the church on Saturday, December 4, 2021 from 9:30am to 10:30am, with a Celebration of Life Service following at 11:00am at Church 52, 8220 Brookville Road, Indianapolis, IN  46239.  Reverend Martha Tennison will be officiating the service and all are welcome. A private graveside service for the family will follow.
Shortly before his death, Phil had been working on a scholarship fund for individuals called to full time pulpit ministry. If you’d like to donate to this fund that was close to his heart, you can do so by writing a check to Church 52, and marking the check for Meade Pulpit Scholarship Fund in the memo line. You may also text your gift to 84321 and mention the fund in the “other” box. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They can help facilitate communication among family and friends, and provide a sense of closure during a difficult time.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary. The writer should be someone who knew the deceased well and can provide accurate and meaningful information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. You may also include other relevant details, such as achievements, awards, or charitable organizations they supported.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise, between 100-200 words. However, some online platforms may allow for longer or more detailed obituaries.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the written obituary text and any accompanying photos.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on your life and legacy. You can store the draft with your important documents or share it with a trusted friend or family member.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, often including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional biographical information and context.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a printed newspaper obituary. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow corrections or edits within a certain timeframe, while others may not make changes once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary from same-day publication for online platforms to several days or even weeks for printed newspapers. Plan ahead and allow sufficient time for publication before funeral services or memorial events.

Can I request changes to an existing obituary?

If you're not satisfied with an existing obituary, you may be able to request changes or corrections from the publication or platform where it was published. Be respectful and clear about your concerns when making requests.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

You can opt for a private or limited-access obituary on some online platforms. Alternatively, you may choose not to publish an obituary at all. Discuss your wishes with your family and funeral home director if necessary.

Can I republish an existing obituary elsewhere?

You may be able to republish an existing obituary on another platform or in another publication with permission from the original publisher. Be sure to obtain permission and follow any applicable copyright laws.
