Wayland Drennan - January 09, 1942 - April 09, 2024

Departed: 04/09/2024 (Robert Lee)
Obituary Preview: Wayland Joe Drennan was born on January 9, 1942, to Ruby and Charlie Drennan in Snyder, TX. He grew up alongside brothers David, Wayne, and sister Joy in and around Sterling City, attending the First Baptist Church where Wayland was baptized at age 12. Always having a strong work ethic, he started working at Brock’s grocery store making deliveries starting at age 10 before moving on to find work at the service stations. He bought his first vehicle at age 14, a 1951 Henry J for $200.Wayland attended Sterling City Schools for 1st through 12th grades, attending school in churches while the new school was being built. He graduated with the Sterling City High School class of 1960 and remained in contact with his classmates, having four of them in attendance at his 82nd birthday party this past January. After finishing high school, Wayland attended San Angelo College then continued his education at Texas Tech University but was drafted in 1964 before he could finish his degree. After serving his country for two years, Wayland returned home to West Texas where on April 9, 1966, he married Mary Beth Walker. That same year Wayland formed a ranching partnership with his dad and brothers, and the couple moved south of San Angelo to start their adventures. As his and Mary’s young family grew, they moved to Red Cloud Ranch west of Robert Lee in 1974, eventually moving into the town proper in 1982.Wayland was very active in the community. Wayland was a familiar face to anybody who attended a Steer football game over the last 40 years, always guarding the gate to the field and excited to see kids compete. He was active in the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association, the Coke County Livestock Show, Sports Boosters, and the Freemasons. He was a 4H dad, a deacon in Robert Lee Baptist Church for over 20 years, and a Suez Shriner of the 32nd Degree.Wayland always said that he went into the used car business to support his ranching habit. In 1986, Wayland partnered up with Jimmy Bell to form The Best Connection. As the business expanded, they added towing to the roster. Passed to Wayland’s son Rick in 2007, The Best Connection offered towing and recovery services for Coke and Sterling Counties for over 25 years. One of the things that Wayland was proudest of, however, was his family. He taught us how to drive (while also teaching us how to feed cows early on a Saturday morning), how to spin a tale, and how to give the best hugs. Raising his kids (and grandkids) in the church, being an active participant in our lives, and showing us the value of hard work, Wayland’s legacy of love will continue to live on through us.On April 9, 2024, Wayland decided that he had kept Mary Beth waiting long enough - their 58th wedding anniversary was a date that he just couldn’t miss.Wayland is preceded in death by both of his parents and his beloved, Mary Beth Drennan. He is survived by his son Rickey Drennan and wife Katie; daughter Debra Horne and husband Ernest; grandchildren Kodi Rene Daniel and husband Ethan; James Wayland Wyatt; Chelsea Loren Fuller and husband Marvin; Corbin Charles Drennan; Skyler Lee Horne; and great-grandchild Damien Fuller.Wayland will forever be remembered for his love of people, travel, ranching, and old cars. He had the biggest heart, gave the best hugs, cheered at many Steer football games, led so many “Drennan Guided Tours”, and was the best father and grandfather we could’ve asked for. When you have a dad and papa like him, no number of years with him could’ve ever felt like enough, but we were incredibly blessed for the decades we got.A visitation will be held 12-8 p.m., Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Shaffer Funeral Home, 901 Austin St. Robert Lee, Texas 76945.
