Obituary Preview: Rita O’Neal (nee Davis) of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully on January 2, 2022 at the age of 76. She passed away after courageous battle with dementia. Rita was cared for by the health care providers at Arden Courts, Edge Hill Nursing Home and Abington Memorial Hospital. The O’Neal Family will be forever grateful to them all.
Rita was born on August 4, 1945 and raised in Philadelphia (Aramingo Avenue and Memphis Street), Pennsylvania. She attended Little Flower High School and was married to the now deceased Stuart T. O’Neal, Jr. for over 40 years. They raised two sons (Stuart “Tye” O’Neal III and Kelly O’Neal) in the Maple Glen section of Upper Dublin Township, and then in the Fort Washington section of Upper Dublin for close to 30 years. Rita was a valued employee of both the YMCA of Ambler and subsequently, ACTS Life Retirement Communities. Both these companies affirmatively helped and aided people, so it was no surprise she wanted to be a part of these organizations.
Rita loved her family, and loved her two sons and grandkids. She was likewise adored by all of them. She always had a soft spot in her heart for those less fortunate, as well as animals (she cherished her dogs), and took care of stray cats and dogs without hesitation. Rita is survived by her son, Stuart “Tye” O’Neal III and his fiancé, Andrea Johnson, and by son Kelly O’Neal and his wife, Jamie Stanley O’Neal, and grandchildren, whom she cherished: Owen Joseph O’Neal, Molly Madeleine O’Neal, Leah Marie O’Neal, Ryann O’Neal and Regan O’Neal. Additionally, she is also survived by her sister, Sister Constance Davis of Aston, Pennsylvania. To say they will all miss her terribly is an understatement.
Rita is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Josephine Davis of Philadelphia.
Rita had many, many friends. She enjoyed Maple Manor Swim Club (a 30 plus year member) where she made lifelong friends, she loved watching the Eagles, visiting the shore, socializing with everyone and most of all, spending time with her family. She was absolutely selfless with her time and love, and always helped others, no matter what circumstance (animals included).
Given the COVID pandemic, a private ceremony will occur this Friday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Ambler, Pennsylvania. The family plans on having a Memorial Celebration at Old York Road Country Club for Rita in late April, so everyone can gather freely (hopefully) and safe enjoy a day in her honor.

When Herb died at age 96 on Friday, November 26th at Foulkeways in Gwynedd PA, it marked the end of a great story of a life well lived – one dedicated to family, career, country, service, and friends.
Born in Philadelphia on December 18th, 1924 Herb spent his early years growing up in the Overbrook neighborhood of Philadelphia. Then Atlantic City was a go-to vacation spot, and it was there that he learned how to fish alongside his parents Abe and Jeanette, and his younger brother Dick.
During his high school years, as a summer waiter at a camp in the Poconos, he dropped a tray of Boston Cream Pies on a young Counselor in Training (CIT), Florence (Floss) Feldman. A courtship began and flourished through his first year at the University of Pennsylvania, and his service in the US Army from 1943 to 1945 as an Engineer specializing in topography, architecture and demolition. Upon his return from the War, Herb completed his Bachelor Degree in Architecture and married Floss on June 6, 1948. Subsequently, he joined his father at Abraham Levy Architects. For nearly 30 years, Herb was integral in the design of many hospitals, schools and other civic buildings, including: Philadelphia International Airport, Einstein Hospital, Moss Rehabilitation Center, The Locust Club, Robin Hood Dell, WFIL TV Studio, Eagleville Hospital and numerous Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Centers.
In 1975, he returned to the University of Pennsylvania to pursue a Masters Degree in Material Culture in American Civilization. He then joined the Philadelphia firm GBQC Architects, where he worked for another 16 years on projects such as the Biomedical Research Building at Hershey Medical Center, Veterans Administration Hospital (Lyons, PA), the Navy Outpatient Facilities at the Philadelphia VA Hospital, and Alabama Power & Light in Birmingham.
In addition to his design work, Herb served as an Architectural Advisor to the Philadelphia Historical Commission; President of the Pennsylvania Society of Architects; the National Director of the American Institute of Architects (AIA); a member of the Joint AIA/White House Advisory Group; a Lifetime Regent of the American Architectural Foundation; on the Preservation Board of the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission; and Vice Chair of AIA HABS/HAER.
In his eighties, following his architecture career, Herb served for a decade as an Historic Preservation Disaster Assistance specialist for the Department of Homeland Security/FEMA, and volunteered on various township and regional growth and preservation committees, including the National Historic Landmark - Graeme Park, as a Board Member of Eagleville Hospital and Board Member and Chairman of the Lower Gwynedd Township Planning Commission.
Herb was honored for his contributions to the Architectural profession as well as historical preservation work, with the John Harbeson Award for his service to the Profession of Architecture from the Philadelphia AIA, a Public Service Achievement Award from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia, and election as a Fellow by the American Institute of Architects.
In 2008, the government of France awarded Herb with a ‘Chevalier’ of the French Legion of Honor for his military service. It was with Floss’s urging in 2009 that he finally opened up about his service and penned his memoires for his children. In 2014, he was a special guest of the French government for the 75th Anniversary of D-day, bringing him back to the beaches of Normandy for the first time since June 1945.
Herb and Floss had three children, of whom they were very proud, and who gave them the blessing of grandchildren: Jason Lamoreaux and Samantha Levy Szygiel. Although Herb was sadly preceded in death by his wife Floss, his son Bob and his daughter Carol, he remained extremely close to his daughter Jo-Anne Levy-Lamoreaux and her husband Brian Lamoreaux. Herb also maintained a close circle of friends, family, and colleagues throughout his life, ultimately coming to revel in his casual social interactions, especially for the past 15 years with his friends at Foulkeways, whether a large dinner group at the Meadow Café or small breakfast gathering of the Socrates club.
Never without a book in hand, Herb fed his intellectual curiosity through reading – especially historical works about Early America, and Philadelphia, the Civil War, both World Wars, as well as leaders in those periods. His intellectual curiosity also led to years of travel with Floss; often in the company of various friends. Eventually, they settled on Italy, making an annual autumnal pilgrimage to Siena, Florence, and the rolling hills of Tuscany. A few years after Floss passed, he made one final visit to Tuscany with his great friend Judy.
The consummate architect and archeologist, Herb left his mark wherever he went, including in the dirt basement of his and Floss’s 1700’s log cabin home, where he would dig for artifacts. He would bring a smile or a laugh with a story or a joke (delivered with perfect comedic timing), provide thoughtful advice, and he would willingly share his opinions on a range of topics, from the horses he bought his daughters when they were young (naming the first horse “Dad’s a Fool”) to technology and computers which, despite his claims to the contrary, he could never quite figure out how to use.
Funeral services will be held graveside at 1:00pm, Friday December 3, at Shalom Memorial Park, 3573 Pine Rd, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006. For the years of exceptional love and care Foulkeways provided to Herb, we request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to: Foulkeways Monthly Support Fund Attn: Andrea McCabe, Development Office
1120 Meetinghouse Rd. Gwynedd, PA 19436-1015

Departed: 11/02/2021 (Ambler)
Obituary Preview: Joanne Rush West, 86, of Telford, passed away on November 2, 2021 in Telford.
Joanne was born in Gwynedd Valley to Dorothy (neè Savage) and Harry Rush on April 4, 1935. She graduated from Ambler Joint High School in 1953, where she played trumpet in the high school band and sang in the school choir. She married her high school sweetheart, Walter West, on June 8, 1957 in Gwynedd, PA. Joanne and Walt moved to San Antonio in 1959 when he was drafted to the US Army. In 1961, they returned to Pennsylvania and soon settled in Towamencin, where they raised three beautiful children and hosted dozens of Thanksgivings, Christmases, Cookie Days, Easters, and birthdays. Joanne loved to have her grandkids over to swim in the pool, and she could often be found taking one of her many beloved pets—especially Taffy—out for walks or taking care of the coy fish in the pond Walt built for her. Joanne worked as a secretary at Ambler Joint High School and then for the Wissahickon School District for over thirty years. She also volunteered with the Towamencin Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary and the Fraternal Order of the Police Auxiliary, as well as groups like the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts when her kids were young. After she retired, Joanne became an active member of the choir at Christ Lutheran Church in Mainland. Later, when she and Walt moved into the Lutheran Community Home in Telford, she joined the choir there, as well. In addition to singing, Joanne loved to paint, play cards, watch birds, and research her family history and genealogy. She also loved to watch Philadelphia sports teams, especially the Phillies (even when they didn’t win, or when they said swear words on live television). Joanne and Walt loved to travel, and they visited almost all of the fifty states over the course of their marriage. They took road trips, bus trips, cruises, and all sorts of vacations with friends and they could almost always be found at a Cracker Barrel when it was time to eat. Her most favorite thing to do was talk to (or about) her family. Joanne was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren, and whenever she could, rain or shine, she and Walt attended sports games, music performances, horse shows, ballets, plays, graduations, and other events where she could brag about being Mommom.
Joanne is survived by her husband Walter, her son, Steve and his wife, Diane, her daughter, Amy and her husband, John, and her son, Scott and his wife, Bonnie. Additionally, Joanne is survived by her grandchildren: Sharon (Jonathan), Amanda (Donny), Eddie (Shannon), Sandi (Dan), Brady, Tim, Matt, Brittany, and Cody. Joanne was blessed to meet three great-grandchildren in recent years: Cole, Madelyn, and Lacey Jo. She was excited to find out that she and Walt were about to become greatgrandparents for the fourth time. Finally, Joanne is survived by various nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother and father and numerous good friends.
