Melody Hicks James - May 11, 1966 - March 26, 2024

Departed: 03/26/2024 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Melody Hicks James, 57, was received into the arms of her Savior in the early hours of Tuesday, March 26, 2024. She was born to Mary Susan Sullivan Hicks of Goldsboro and the late William Frank Hicks on May 11, 1966. In addition to her father, Melody was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Casper and Geraldine Hicks and her maternal grandparents, Clifton and Dorothy Sullivan.
As a member of Stoney Creek O.F.W.B. Church, Melody was faithful to her Lord by offering her skillset to various ministries. An active member of the Ladies Auxiliary, she served through many capacities including president for several terms. Melody was also a pivotal member of the Crusaders for Christ Sunday School Class.
With a heart for helping children, Melody found a calling with helping the children from the Free Will Baptist Children’s Home. For years, she organized their Christmas parties at Stoney Creek and ensured that each child received gifts.
Invested in the lives of her children, Melody became involved wherever her girls were involved. From church activities, recitals, sports to programs at school, Melody offered her time and talents where they prospered. She was always the loudest parent there, excited to cheer for her children. While her children were students at Wayne Christian School, she also served as a substitute teacher. Melody even taught a food and nutrition class there as well.
Although Melody’s health and mobility had declined in the last years, she always found ways to serve others. A master at online shopping, she handled business from home through shopping and organizing. Always willing to help where she could, she remained a vital blessing for her family, church, and friends.
You didn’t have to be around Melody long to know of her love for Diet Pepsi. She was as grateful for the Pepsi company as they were for her, for she usually stocked enough Pepsi’s to keep the company in business. While Pepsi was at the top of the list for favorites, she also had a fondness for the Peanuts cartoons, Gone With the Wind, Mickey Mouse and Krispy Kreme.
For Melody, family was her greatest accomplishment and chief blessing. Her life was complete with the love of her husband, children, and her dearest grandson, Peyton.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 29, 2024 from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Stoney Creek O.F.W.B. Church followed by a service at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Pastor Josh Whitfield and Pastor Barry Williamson officiating. Interment will be in the Pikeville Cemetery.
In addition to her mother, Melody is survived by her husband of 38 years, Phil James; daughters, Rebecca James Cann and husband, Trevor and Joanna James; grandson, Peyton Cann; brothers, Larry Hicks and wife, Melissa, Garry Hicks and wife, Vickie, and William Hicks; sister, Frances Mandeville and husband, Marc; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins she loved very much.
Special thanks to her wonderful neighbors, church friends, and the nurses and doctors who cared for her and her family in so many kind and thoughtful ways through the years and during this time of loss.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be given in Melody’s memory to Free Will Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 249, Middlesex, NC 27577 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 11796, Charlotte, NC 28220.

Ray Casper Hicks, Sr. - February 29, 1940 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Ray Casper Hicks, Sr. victoriously met his Savior face-to-face in the early hours of Tuesday, March 19, 2024. He was born in Wayne County to the late William Casper Hicks and Geraldine Forehand Hicks on February 29, 1940. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Rachel Leah; son, William Dean Hicks; brother, William Frank Hicks; and his beloved k-9 friend, Fifi.
Starting early in life as a farmer, Ray worked from sun up to sun down planting, tending, and harvesting. Relying in the goodness of the Lord, he trusted that the work he did combined with the blessings of God would yield a bountiful crop. Learning the skill of taxidermy, Ray later invested his time as a taxidermist, mounting much wild game for customers and sharing his expertise with others through teaching at Wayne Community College. Continuing his varied career path, Ray entered into the program at Johnston Community College to get his CDL license. Upon completion, he worked as a truck driver. His career again transitioned to being a newspaper carrier for the Goldsboro News Argus, a job he greatly enjoyed and continued until retirement.
A longtime member of Mount Carmel Church, Ray faithfully served his Lord and the local congregation through his prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. After retirement, Ray followed and supported his wife, Rev. Rose Hicks, in all her churches and pastoral duties. He was so proud of her and his dedication to the Lord Jesus Christ and Rose’s ministry was unsurpassed. He spent much time with each of her churches singing in the choirs, making lifelong friends and beautiful, happy memories.
The beauty of God’s creation was never more evident to Ray than when he was outdoors. As evidenced by his career choices, the outdoors were where Ray was most at peace. Hunting was an enjoyable pastime, and he spent many years raising his own sheep, goats, fallow deer, pigeons, and numerous exotic birds.
Memories of yesteryear were deeply entwined in Ray’s being. He loved television shows from days gone by, especially enjoyed Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, John Wayne and James Dean. Old Westerns and Turner Classic Movies were his go-to when he tuned his television. With a masterful skill at wordsmithing, Ray could interest anyone in his stories, especially when talking of events in years gone by.
A big baseball fan, Ray spent his years in love with the sport, from coaching little league when his son was playing, to watching games on television. As a coach, he took the 13-year old Babe Ruth Team on to win the State Championship in 1982. An everlasting fan, he and his wife would try to get to the Kinston Indian Games when they could.
Time spent at Bogue Inlet was always a highlight for Ray. A change of scenery from his home, Ray yet again recognized the beauty of God’s creation through the crashing waves, golden sand, and salt air.
Though many things brought Ray enjoyment through the years, there was no greater blessing than his family. Most of all, he was honored to be known as husband to his dear wife for 65 years.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Mount Carmel Church, 610 Mount Carmel Church Road, Pikeville. He is also survived by his brother, J.D. Hicks and wife, Patty; sister, Joy Hicks Williams and husband, Bubba; and several cousins, nieces and nephews he loved very much.

Robert also spent countless hours ringing the Salvation Army bell and selling brooms and light bulbs for the Pikeville Lions Club. This is an organization he loved dearly and for which he served as President two times. For his dedication and service Robert was awarded the Jack Stickley Fellow as well the Melvin Jones Fellowship and earned his 25 year Monarch Chevron in 2021, the highest recognitions by bestowed by Lions Club and Lions Club International. Robert's love for community is also demonstrated through his dedication as a Pikeville Town Council member for over two decades and for this service the Governor bestowed the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He was also a member of the TAC Board for the City of Goldsboro.
Our hearts are truly BEYOND broken but we have a peace that transcends all understanding, knowing Robert has a home in gloryland that outshines the sun.

Dennis O'Neal Smith - August 30, 1944 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Dennis O’Neal Smith, 79, passed away on Friday evening, March 8, 2024 at ECU Medical Center in Greenville. Dennis was born in Wayne County to the late Leroy O’Neal Smith and Sally Blanche Carlyle Smith on August 30, 1944. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Kaye Vinson Smith; and sister, Ella Jean Smith.
Dennis served our country as a serviceman in the Army Reserves. Although he began his career as a mechanic with CL. Snipes Ford, Dennis knew that a life of farming was calling his name. His love for the land ran deep in his veins, and he never felt that he was working as long as he farmed, for he loved every minute of it. In addition to farming, he owned and operated an eighteen wheeler and hauled for several local grain mills.
A man of many interests, he was passionate about racing. For many years he was a stock car driver. Animals recognized his love for them and they instantly gravitated to him. Getting down on their level and playing with them was always right up his alley. His demeanor with people was just as friendly, as he never met a stranger. Those he had just met would soon feel as if they had a lifelong friend. From striking up great conversation to listening intently to those who surrounded him, Dennis made all feel comfortable in his presence.
In Dennis’s spare time, he looked forward to shooting pool or playing his hand of cards. Fishing brought great enjoyment as well.
A constant support to his family, Dennis took interest in everything that his children and grandchildren were doing. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play in various sports. Though he was outnumbered, having two daughters and four granddaughters, he was grateful to be at their mercy. He loved them each uniquely and dearly. Since the sudden death of his wife in November of 2023, his life had a void that was deep, for he missed his day-to-day life with her constantly.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Dennis’ life at 3:00 p.m. at the graveside in Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Cotton officiating.

Polly Howell Culbreth - January 26, 1947 - March 07, 2024

Departed: 03/07/2024 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Polly Howell Culbreth, 77, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 7, 2024, while surrounded by her family at home. Polly was born in Wayne County to the late Joe and Laurah Howell on January 26, 1947. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Arthur Paul Culbreth; son, Jeffrey Allen Culbreth and sister, JoAnn Smith.
Growing up on the family farm, Polly’s roots were deeply entrenched into her very being. Affectionately labeled a true Southern Belle, Polly was proud of her heritage and true to her raising. On the farm, her daddy would rescue animals and watch as Polly became nurse and nurturer to each. It was in her spirit from the very beginning to take care of anything and anyone that needed help.
A 1965 graduate of New Hope High School, Polly retired from the Wayne County Public School system where she served as an accounts payable clerk for federal programs. For many years, Polly also helped her husband with his business, Culbreth Electrical Services.
Always dressed to the nines, Polly was sure to find shoes that matched her clothing, and her pocket book and accessories were an equal complement. Though her children liked to joke that she was bougie, she simply took pride in what she was wearing, how she looked, and how she presented herself.
Style for Polly was equally evident in her abilities as a decorator. Lavishly decorating the home for the holidays, everything she placed looked perfect. A gracious and hospitable hostess, she was always ready to help her children and grandchildren throw the best parties.
Art and Polly were true loves, and nothing showed this more than when seeing the two on the dance floor. At home, Polly’s love for family was demonstrated through the many meals she prepared. Her love for cooking was compounded by the many that she brought around the table to share the meal. From her happy places at the beach and mountains to everyday visits at home, being with her family and spending time with them was her absolute delight.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 11, 2024 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Polly’s life at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Jeff Dail officiating. Interment will be on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.
Polly is survived by her son, Anthony Culbreth and wife, Christy; daughter, Pam Culbreth; grandchildren, Jennifer Strickland (Nicholas), Jacob Culbreth and Alyssa Culbreth (Wesley Case); and great-grandchildren, Carsyn Rose and Lainey Strickland. She is also survived by a special family friend, Anita Baker.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be given in her memory to Cures for the Colors, SMOC, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, NC 27534 or Mount Olive First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 130 Ed Edmundson Road, Mount Olive, NC 28365.

Departed: 03/07/2024 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: With great sadness, we announce that Ann Baker Ward, age 77, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2024, in Raleigh, NC, from complications due to recent heart and lung issues. Grandparents were JW and Addie Ward of Goldsboro, NC, and Baker and Laura Bordeaux of Wallace, NC. She was variously known as “Bakie,” “Bakey,” “Baker,” and “Ann Baker.”
A Goldsboro High School graduate, Ann Baker earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a Master of Library Science from Appalachian State University, and a Master of Arts in English from North Carolina State University. She worked at NCSU’s DH Hill Library for 28 years and was the principal bibliographic specialist upon retirement. Ann Baker was a truly unique individual. Her extensive travels, reading, and studies fueled her fierce curiosity and desire to be a lifelong student and learner. Most notably, her love for learning was not limited to books, cultures, and academics. Ann Baker thrived on learning with, from, and about others. Through her inquisitive nature and genuine interest in making deep connections, she took note of all aspects of others’ lives, deepening relationships with each exchange. In her presence, others felt as though they were the only person in the room. Those who had the opportunity to know her experienced the uniqueness of her love, care, and humanity. She would frequently bring small tokens of her appreciation to people after they had spent time together, such as a flower, a decorated gourd or plant, a snack, or of course, a book. She embodied a spirit of generosity, sending cards, making calls and visits, and remembering significant and seemingly insignificant events in others’ lives. To any who might need or benefit, she would willingly give the shirt off her back, the food off her plate, and the song in her heart. Ann Baker found great delight in life’s simple pleasures, beautiful things, and new experiences. She loved and deeply respected nature and cared for the environment. Her integrity was infallible, truly living what she believed. Ann Baker was a devoted sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.
