Ray Casper Hicks, Sr. - February 29, 1940 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Ray Casper Hicks, Sr. victoriously met his Savior face-to-face in the early hours of Tuesday, March 19, 2024. He was born in Wayne County to the late William Casper Hicks and Geraldine Forehand Hicks on February 29, 1940. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Rachel Leah; son, William Dean Hicks; brother, William Frank Hicks; and his beloved k-9 friend, Fifi.
Starting early in life as a farmer, Ray worked from sun up to sun down planting, tending, and harvesting. Relying in the goodness of the Lord, he trusted that the work he did combined with the blessings of God would yield a bountiful crop. Learning the skill of taxidermy, Ray later invested his time as a taxidermist, mounting much wild game for customers and sharing his expertise with others through teaching at Wayne Community College. Continuing his varied career path, Ray entered into the program at Johnston Community College to get his CDL license. Upon completion, he worked as a truck driver. His career again transitioned to being a newspaper carrier for the Goldsboro News Argus, a job he greatly enjoyed and continued until retirement.
A longtime member of Mount Carmel Church, Ray faithfully served his Lord and the local congregation through his prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. After retirement, Ray followed and supported his wife, Rev. Rose Hicks, in all her churches and pastoral duties. He was so proud of her and his dedication to the Lord Jesus Christ and Rose’s ministry was unsurpassed. He spent much time with each of her churches singing in the choirs, making lifelong friends and beautiful, happy memories.
The beauty of God’s creation was never more evident to Ray than when he was outdoors. As evidenced by his career choices, the outdoors were where Ray was most at peace. Hunting was an enjoyable pastime, and he spent many years raising his own sheep, goats, fallow deer, pigeons, and numerous exotic birds.
Memories of yesteryear were deeply entwined in Ray’s being. He loved television shows from days gone by, especially enjoyed Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, John Wayne and James Dean. Old Westerns and Turner Classic Movies were his go-to when he tuned his television. With a masterful skill at wordsmithing, Ray could interest anyone in his stories, especially when talking of events in years gone by.
A big baseball fan, Ray spent his years in love with the sport, from coaching little league when his son was playing, to watching games on television. As a coach, he took the 13-year old Babe Ruth Team on to win the State Championship in 1982. An everlasting fan, he and his wife would try to get to the Kinston Indian Games when they could.
Time spent at Bogue Inlet was always a highlight for Ray. A change of scenery from his home, Ray yet again recognized the beauty of God’s creation through the crashing waves, golden sand, and salt air.
Though many things brought Ray enjoyment through the years, there was no greater blessing than his family. Most of all, he was honored to be known as husband to his dear wife for 65 years.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Mount Carmel Church, 610 Mount Carmel Church Road, Pikeville. A service to celebrate Ray’s life will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary with Rev. Amy Kelly and Rev. Steve Wellman officiating. Interment will be in the Crumpler Family Cemetery.
Ray is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rose Crumpler Hicks; children, Eleanor Hope Hicks Porter and husband, Ed, Robin Rose Hicks, and Ray Casper Hicks, Jr. and wife, Melissa; grandchildren, Blake Anthony Howell and wife, Britney, Faith Dotter Hill and husband, Daniel, and Jonathan Wayne Dotter; and three great-grandchildren, Luke Howell, Leah Howell and Penelope Hill. He is also survived by his brother, J.D. Hicks and wife, Patty; sister, Joy Hicks Williams and husband, Bubba; and several cousins, nieces and nephews he loved very much.

Dennis O'Neal Smith - August 30, 1944 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Dennis O’Neal Smith, 79, passed away on Friday evening, March 8, 2024 at ECU Medical Center in Greenville. Dennis was born in Wayne County to the late Leroy O’Neal Smith and Sally Blanche Carlyle Smith on August 30, 1944. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Kaye Vinson Smith; and sister, Ella Jean Smith.
Dennis served our country as a serviceman in the Army Reserves. Although he began his career as a mechanic with CL. Snipes Ford, Dennis knew that a life of farming was calling his name. His love for the land ran deep in his veins, and he never felt that he was working as long as he farmed, for he loved every minute of it. In addition to farming, he owned and operated an eighteen wheeler and hauled for several local grain mills.
A man of many interests, he was passionate about racing. For many years he was a stock car driver. Animals recognized his love for them and they instantly gravitated to him. Getting down on their level and playing with them was always right up his alley. His demeanor with people was just as friendly, as he never met a stranger. Those he had just met would soon feel as if they had a lifelong friend. From striking up great conversation to listening intently to those who surrounded him, Dennis made all feel comfortable in his presence.
In Dennis’s spare time, he looked forward to shooting pool or playing his hand of cards. Fishing brought great enjoyment as well.
A constant support to his family, Dennis took interest in everything that his children and grandchildren were doing. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play in various sports. Though he was outnumbered, having two daughters and four granddaughters, he was grateful to be at their mercy. He loved them each uniquely and dearly. Since the sudden death of his wife in November of 2023, his life had a void that was deep, for he missed his day-to-day life with her constantly.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Dennis’ life at 3:00 p.m. at the graveside in Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Cotton officiating.

Polly Howell Culbreth - January 26, 1947 - March 07, 2024

Departed: 03/07/2024 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Polly Howell Culbreth, 77, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 7, 2024, while surrounded by her family at home. Polly was born in Wayne County to the late Joe and Laurah Howell on January 26, 1947. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Arthur Paul Culbreth; son, Jeffrey Allen Culbreth and sister, JoAnn Smith.
Growing up on the family farm, Polly’s roots were deeply entrenched into her very being. Affectionately labeled a true Southern Belle, Polly was proud of her heritage and true to her raising. On the farm, her daddy would rescue animals and watch as Polly became nurse and nurturer to each. It was in her spirit from the very beginning to take care of anything and anyone that needed help.
A 1965 graduate of New Hope High School, Polly retired from the Wayne County Public School system where she served as an accounts payable clerk for federal programs. For many years, Polly also helped her husband with his business, Culbreth Electrical Services.
Always dressed to the nines, Polly was sure to find shoes that matched her clothing, and her pocket book and accessories were an equal complement. Though her children liked to joke that she was bougie, she simply took pride in what she was wearing, how she looked, and how she presented herself.
Style for Polly was equally evident in her abilities as a decorator. Lavishly decorating the home for the holidays, everything she placed looked perfect. A gracious and hospitable hostess, she was always ready to help her children and grandchildren throw the best parties.
Art and Polly were true loves, and nothing showed this more than when seeing the two on the dance floor. At home, Polly’s love for family was demonstrated through the many meals she prepared. Her love for cooking was compounded by the many that she brought around the table to share the meal. From her happy places at the beach and mountains to everyday visits at home, being with her family and spending time with them was her absolute delight.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 11, 2024 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Polly’s life at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Jeff Dail officiating. Interment will be on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.

Jo Heidenreich - September 21, 1955 - March 05, 2024

Departed: 03/05/2024 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: The Carolina blue skies parted to welcome me peacefully home Tuesday, March 5, 2024 while surrounded by my family, who never left my side. I’d like the memories of me to be happy ones, full of love, laughter and wonderful remembrances of invaluable times shared. My hope is to be greeted by my parents, Frederick Ross Conyers, Jr. and Catherine “Kitty” Weaver Conyers; brother, Frederick “Ross” Conyers, III; father and mother-in-law, Ralph and Evelyn Heidenreich; brother-in-law, Bob Maxwell; my precious four-legged baby girl, Brandi, and a host of cherished friends, who all preceded me in death. To everyone I love, I’m sorry our journey was cut much shorter than we all anticipated.
Born in Rocky Mount, I graduated from Peace College, moved to Greenville to attend East Carolina University, earning a bachelor’s and master’s, and resided in Goldsboro for the last 42 years. I worked for the Chambers of Commerce of Wayne and Dare Counties; Parker Advertising/Channel 10, where I was known for the home show and my notorious phrase “And now, let’s go house hunting”; and retired from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County. The Relay for Life of Wayne County and Crime Stoppers Telethons of Wayne, Pitt and Craven Counties were very important to me, and I gave a lot of time and creative energy to those organizations. Some of my happiest moments included time spent at our home away from home at the beach, curled up with a good book and doting on my doggies and grand-doggies.
My family was always my top priority, and taking care of and nurturing them throughout their lives was my greatest joy. I love you all, more than you will ever know. To my husband of 45 years, Jim Heidenreich, we chose each other every day and I enjoyed our journey together. To my sons, Jimmy Heidenreich and Josh Heidenreich, being your mom was my greatest blessing and proudest accomplishment. To my daughter-in-law, Suzanne, and son-in-law, Matt, I could not ask for better partners for my boys, and words cannot express my gratitude for everything you both have done and will continue to do. Please take care of them for me! To my granddaughter Emalyn “Ebie”, your “JoJo” loves you more than could ever be put into words, and watching you grow into such a precious little girl brought me so much happiness. To my siblings, Trish Maxwell, Vickie Pick (John) and Rich Conyers, we have been through so much together, and I’m thankful for all the memories together. To my sisters-in-law, Ellen Heidenreich and Jan Fly (Ron), thank you for welcoming me into your family and sharing your brother. To my precious beagle Maggie, Mama loves you; be a good girl! To my nieces, nephews and friends, I loved being your aunt and friend and hope I’ve left you all with cherished memories. To John and Debbie, thank for caring for our granddaughter throughout my sickness; she is so lucky to have you both.
I, as well as my family, would like to extend our sincere appreciation for the incredible knowledge, diligence and unwavering support received from the doctors and staffs of the Duke Cancer Center, Duke University Hospital, and Hock Family Pavilion, including all the hospitalists, nurses, CNAs and housekeepers of 9300, 3300 and 8W MICU. Your compassionate and loving care was nothing short of amazing.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 16, 2024 at New Hope Friends Church in Goldsboro, with visitation immediately following the service.
