William Thomas “Tom” Wagner - July 02, 1950 - May 05, 2024

Departed: 05/05/2024 (Ridgeland)
Obituary Preview: William Thomas “Tom” Wagner died peacefully at home on Sunday, May 5, 2024. As he was
most of his life, Tom was surrounded by family and friends. Tom was born on July 2, 1950 in Shreveport, Louisiana to William Clarence and Earnestine Faulkner Wagner. He attended Florida State University where he majored in electrical engineering and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He retired from the
company he founded, Wagner Consulting Group, in 2023. A beloved husband, father, and brother, Tom was married to Janet Smith Wagner, who was the love of his life. For over twenty years he presented her with a monthly gift he called
“candygrams” – tokens of his love and affection for his bride. Tom and Janet had one son, Mike Wagner. Mike would always say he did some things any other father would have been furious about. Instead, Tom would ask him, “What did you learn from this?” Mike is the father of Tristen and Hayden, Tom’s grandsons. The annual Wagner
Consulting Group Christmas card would often include a photo of Tom, Mike, and the boys. One of four siblings, the late Patricia Wright Adams, John Wagner, and Carolyn Cooley, Tom was a great brother to them all. “Tom had a formidable intellect,” said his younger brother John Wagner. “If I had a question, I would go to him. When I asked him for career advice, he would say, “Work from your strengths.” Thanks to Janet, the kitchen has always been the heart of the Wagner home, and Tom loved holding court at the kitchen table, scotch in hand. He always had fun facts to share, and he would ask those gathered at the table what the gossip was in their part of the world. He was interested in what people had to say, and he made everyone feel welcomed and important. The Wagner home has always been a welcoming place for all ages, including the many children who loved “Uncle Tom.” He loved to read books to the neighborhood children and hear about their
day at school. Neat, orderly, and organized, with every hair on his head always in place, Tom made life look effortless. His business card, which he gave people to get a laugh, included such job skills as “deals made, children trained, governments run, knives sharpened, uprisings quelled and lead singing for revival meetings.” Tom Wagner was a gentleman and a scholar, and he will be sorely
missed by the many who knew and loved him.

Henry Horn Burge - July 17, 1934 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Ridgeland)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory of Henry Horn Burge
Henry Horn Burge, 89, born in the quaint town of Searcy, Arkansas to Otis Neal Burge and Lola Jane Horn, passed away peacefully surrounded by his cherished loved ones. His journey on this earth came to an end on April 26, 2024.
Henry lived a Christ centered life marked by warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his community. Henry embodied the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion, traits that would define him throughout his life.
Although Henry was born in Searcy, he considers himself a native of Hardy, where much of his childhood and formative years were spent. From his early years in Hardy, Henry displayed a remarkable spirit and sense of responsibility. He worked at the local general store with his family, graduated from Hardy High School in 1950 at just 16 years old, and attended Arkansas State College and The University of Arkansas. His real calling came soon after, where he joined the U.S. Navy. He proudly served in the US Navy in the Pacific region during the Korean war, a time of his life he held so dear. He attended countless US Navy reunions and held the relationships he made during service in the highest regard.
After returning home, he moved to Mississippi and earned his BS and MBA from Mississippi College. He joined Mississippi Valley Gas in 1959 and served in a variety of positions including distribution engineer and Director of Purchasing. After 40 years of service with the utility company, he retired in 1999.
Henry married Doris May Waterer on September 3, 1961, in a Methodist Church in downtown Jackson, MS. Together they had John Neal Burge in May 1966. Their 43 years of marriage brought them countless adventures! They traveled to Austria, France, to name a few, experienced many river cruises, and their favorite pastime was tailgating at The Grove before an Ole Miss game. Sadly, Doris passed away in November 2004 after battling Parkinson’s disease for over 15 years.
Henry married Mary Jane Glenn on August 27, 2005. Together they enjoyed playing bridge, attending the New Stage Theater, and the Mississippi Symphony. They were faithful members of the Christ United Church choir until Mary Jane went to be with our Lord in April 2021.
Throughout his life, Henry was active in the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, the Walter Scott Coffee Club, Junior Achievement, and Boy Scouts. He is a past president of the Sertoma Club of Jackson, served on the Board of Directors of the Central Mississippi chapter of the American Red Cross, was an invested volunteer within the local Lion’s Club Chapter and spent many years providing companionship and assistance at the Mississippi Baptist Hospital. In 2004, Henry was honored by Goodwill Industries with an Ambassador Award, and as a Volunteer Mississippi GIVE (Governors Initiative for Volunteer Excellence) recipient – which not only highlighted but beautifully celebrated Henry’s lifelong exemplary service as one of Mississippi’s most dedicated citizens.
Henry enjoyed playing tennis, sang a tune every moment he could, regularly attended bible study, and loved the theatre. He was an active member of Christ United Church in Jackson, MS for over 60 years. Whether it was his life group or singing in the choir, the church gave him fulfillment, grace, and a sense of purpose like nothing else.
Henry's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the memories he created. His generosity and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Henry is survived by his son, John Neal Burge and daughter in-law, Rebecca Chambers Burge, of Plano, TX, grandchildren Brittany Barker and Erin Thibodeaux of McKinney, TX, where he was sweetly known as “Grandaddy”. Henry was the proud great-grandfather of four boys, Aiden and Auggie Barker, Tate and Tex Henry Thibodeaux (his namesake), and soon to be great-granddaughter, Bonnie Barker. Henry held his family so dear. He is also survived by the Horns in New Mexico, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi, The Gatgens in Tennessee, and the Harnessess in Arkansas.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 5th from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of life on Monday, May 6th at 10:00 a.m., both at Christ United Church in Jackson, MS.
6000 Old Canton Rd. Jackson, MS 39211
Memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Church, the Lion’s Club of Jackson, the Active Duty Fund Drive of the U.S. Navy, or the American Parkinson’s Disease Association. While we are devastated to lose Henry, we rejoice in his newfound strength and peace in Heaven!

Janet Marie Talbot Nuzum Green - October 19, 1929 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Ridgeland)
Obituary Preview: Our dearly beloved mother, Janet Marie Talbot Nuzum Green, passed away peacefully in her
residence at St. Catherine’s Village on April 26, 2024, surrounded by three generations of family.
Janet was 94 years old. Janet (affectionately known as “Mama Two”) was the ninth child of 11 children born in the
Talbot Family to Alma (“Momie”) Folse Talbot and Everett Louis Talbot in Houma, Louisiana. She told stories of huge family dinners and laughingly noted that there were always extra friends at the table. It was here that Janet’s love for conversation, entertaining, and delicious food was born. She continued to hone all three for the rest of her life. After graduating from Terrebonne High School, Janet moved to New Orleans and enrolled in the Charity School of Nursing. After graduating with her Nursing Degree, she became a practicing pediatric nurse at Charity Hospital, where, in 1950, she met “the love of her life” Dr. John Weston Nuzum, Jr., a surgeon from Chicago, Illinois, who was in his residency at Charity Hospital. They were married on November 17, 1951, at Holy Name of Jesus Church, in New Orleans. Janet and John had three children,
Robert, Cathy and Nancy. After John’s untimely death in 1955, Janet and her three children moved back to Houma, Louisiana where she met Travis Green, a sales consultant for Hughes Tool Company and a decorated World War II veteran from Magnolia, Arkansas. A romance began in conversations over the shared fence in their backyards and the two married in Houma, Louisiana, on February
27, 1960. Janet and Travis had two children, Jennifer (“Gigi”) and Travis. It was shortly thereafter that Janet took her show on the road spreading fellowship, delicious meals, community volunteerism and fun along the way. Janet’s first stop was Corpus Christi, Texas, where Janet enjoyed being President of the Women’s Golf Auxiliary at the Corpus Christi
Country Club. Next, Janet and the family moved back to her home state to live in New Orleans. Janet’s final home was Jackson, Mississippi. In Jackson, Janet, there known by all her family and friends as Mama Two, became an active member of St. Richard's Parish and volunteered lovingly in the REACH program and Oxfam program where she fed the community. Mama Two served as Mississippi State Al-anon Chairman for three years. Mama Two was a devoted member of the Jackson Stitchery Guild where she learned to make beautiful keepsakes for her family and many friends. Mama Two was a devoted grandmother and took pride in celebrating her children and
grandchildren with elaborate meals of choice on birthdays and special occasions. After Travis’s death in 2004, Mama Two continued to reside at her home in Jackson, until February of 2016, when she moved to St. Catherine’s Village. Mama Two truly loved her eight years of living at St. Catherine’s Village, where she made many new friends and where she received excellent nursing care and treatment. The Family would like to thank each and every one of the nurses, caregivers, and staff of St. Catherine’s Village for their loving care and kind treatment of Mama Two. In particular, the Family would like to thank and specifically recognize
Stacey, Missy, Shelia, Evon, Eddie Mae, Pat, Katy, Kelly, Ora, Tarva, Ida and Kierra.
Mama Two was preceded in death by her beloved parents and her five sisters and five brothers. She is survived by her five children, Robert Weston Nuzum (Alane), Cathy Ann Nuzum, Nancy Nuzum Hodgins (Leo), Gigi Green Welsh (Vic), and Travis Luther Louis Green (Debbie O'Brien). She is survived by her nine grandchildren, Taylor Bryan Theunissen, MD (Laci), Travis Kurt Theunissen (Debra), Jacqueline Hodgins Perry (Brian), Talbot Myles Theunissen (Jackeline), Christopher Michael Hodgins (Lauren), Catherine Coogan Hodgins, Victor Welsh, Morgan Hankins (Tim) and Colin Williams Welsh (Kennedy). Mama Two is also survived by
her seventeen great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services for Mama Two on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, 500 Goode Street, Houma, Louisiana 70360. Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM followed by Mass at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery Number 2 and a Celebration of Life Reception following the burial will begin at
approximately 1:00 PM at Milano’s Restaurant, 314 Belanger Street, Houma, Louisiana 70360. Charitable donations may be made to: Ronald McDonald House of Galveston 301 14th Street Galveston, Texas 77550

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to pay tribute and celebrate the person's life.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life, accomplishments, and personality to create a meaningful and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charity donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually shorter (around 100-200 words), while online obituaries can be longer (up to 500 words or more). It's essential to check with the publication or platform for specific guidelines.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging. Check with the publication or platform for their photo submission guidelines.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They may require you to email or fax the obituary text and any accompanying photos. Be sure to ask about deadlines, pricing, and any specific formatting requirements.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional obituary, published on a website or social media platform. Online obituaries often offer more flexibility in terms of content, images, and video tributes. They can also be easily shared with others and remain accessible for years to come.

How long do online obituaries stay online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some websites may keep obituaries archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check with the platform for their archiving policies.

Can I edit an online obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes. Online obituary platforms usually allow you to make changes or updates to the obituary after it's been published. However, this may depend on the specific platform's policies and procedures.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or obituary websites using keywords like the deceased person's name, date of birth and death, and location. You may also visit local libraries or genealogical societies that maintain archives of historical newspapers.

Are obituaries only for older people?

No. Obituaries can be written for anyone who has passed away, regardless of age. While it's true that older adults are more likely to have an obituary written about them, younger people who have made significant contributions or had a profound impact on their community may also be honored with an obituary.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died many years ago?

Absolutely! Writing an obituary for someone who passed away years ago can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and share their story with others. You can publish it online or share it with family and friends.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. They will typically work with you to correct the mistake and republish the revised obituary.

Can I use humor in an obituary?

Yes! Humor can be an effective way to celebrate the deceased person's personality and spirit. However, be mindful of your audience and ensure that any humorous anecdotes or remarks are respectful and won't offend those who are grieving.

Should I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Including information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's values and legacy. Be sure to specify the charity's name and address (if applicable).

Can I write my own obituary?

While it may seem unusual, some people do choose to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can provide a sense of control and allow you to shape how you're remembered. However, it's essential to discuss this with your loved ones beforehand to ensure they're comfortable with the idea.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a biographical sketch written about someone who is still alive. It's often used as a way to celebrate milestones or achievements during their lifetime rather than after they've passed away.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can post a link to the online obituary or share a brief summary along with relevant hashtags.

How do I deal with negative comments on an online obituary?

If you encounter negative comments on an online obituary, try not to engage with them directly. Instead, report inappropriate comments to the platform administrator or moderator for removal. Focus on celebrating the deceased person's life and legacy instead of responding to negativity.

Can I create a memorial webpage for my loved one?

How do I cope with writing an obituary during a difficult time?

Writing an obituary can be emotionally challenging, especially when dealing with grief. Take your time, gather support from loved ones if needed, and focus on celebrating the deceased person's life rather than dwelling on your own emotions.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's passing and providing basic biographical information. A eulogy is a spoken tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service that shares personal anecdotes and memories of the deceased person.

Can I reuse an existing obituary template?

You can use existing templates as inspiration or guidance when writing an obituary. However, it's essential to customize the content to fit your loved one's unique life story and personality.

How do I know what tone to use when writing an obituary?

The tone of an obituary should reflect the deceased person's personality and spirit. Aim for sincerity, respectfulness, and authenticity when sharing their story with others.
