Obituary Preview: Evelyn Lawson, 90, of Canton, Georgia passed away at her daughter's home in Dahlonega, Georgia on April 12, 2022.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred M. Cox and Annie Belle Day Cox; her son, Kenneth “Kenny” C. Lawson; her siblings, James "Jake" Cox, Robert "Robo Cox, Billy "Bill” Cox, Emma Lou Howell, and Laverne Cantrell. She is also preceded in death by her brothers-in-law, James Howell and J. B. Cantrell.
Ms. Lawson is survived by her daughter, Pam Adkins (Russ), and her son, Tommy Lawson (Beverly), all of Dahlonega, Georgia, and her daughter-in-law, Dianne Coggins Lawson of Woodstock, Georgia, and her sisters Sue Reynolds (Wayne) of Marietta, Georgia, and Ann Kelly (Jim), Lawrenceville, Georgia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Zachary Lawson (Rebekah) and Betsy Lawson, Mattie Flynn and Mielah Flynn. Her great granddaughters are Amelia Lawson, Annelise Lawson, Addison Lawson, Averie Lawson, and her recent excitement was her great grandson to be born in October of this year. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Ms. Lawson worked at the Canton Textile Mill in Canton for many years until closing. She also worked at the Southern Tea Company until retirement.. Evelyn loved to be outdoors all day to work in her flower gardens or mow her lawn. She cut her lawn until her early 80's. Her most enjoyable times were seeing or hearing from the grandchildren or great grandchildren. She delighted in any news of them, cards, photos, or just being with them. She was especially thrilled, when she heard she had a great grandson being born in October of this year. Her comment when told of this was "Praise the Lord!". She was excited about this and of course, called everyone when she found out.
She learned to play a guitar and a banjo in her younger days, and she also sang and tap danced. One day her daughter, who taught country and western dancing, was trying” to learn to clog. Ms. Lawson told her, "it can't be that hard, I can tap dance" and proceeded to show her all the moves. Her daughter had no idea she knew how to tap dance, and said she was awesome.
She loved her family, and also the Burks' family who lived next door and helped watch her, and the Samples family in her neighborhood who would stop by to chat and check on her. She loved the hours she spent on the phone talking and visiting with the family. Ms. Lawson loved the time she spent having lunches brought in by the family. She enjoyed sending cards to everyone for any reason. She loved sending a bouquet of flowers and a "goodie bag" (candy and snacks) home with everyone, including repairmen at her home, and insisted you needed it.

Carolyn L Turner - September 04, 1945 - April 10, 2022

Departed: 04/10/2022 (Canton)
Obituary Preview: Carolyn L. Turner, age 76, of Powder Springs, Georgia passed away on April 10, 2022 at home surrounded by family.
Mrs. Turner was born on September 4, 1945 in Atlanta, Georgia.
She is survived by her husband: Michael Turner, children: John Canning, James Canning, Chris Barnes, and Cherie Lawley, sisters: Patricia Manly , and Mari Carpenter, aunt: Laura Mulkey and grandchildren: Jack, John, Danielle, Ruthy, Brianna, Matthew, Austin, Jordan, and Gage as well as several cousins and great grandchildren.
Mrs. Turner was most of all a giver.  You couldn't visit her and not go home with a box full of gifts or food.  She loved to crochet, and up until her hands couldn't crochet any more, she'd take a clear bag of her hand made goodies to all doctor appointments for everyone to see.  The staff would be given all that she had made, and she'd take requests for the next appointment. Giving brought her so much joy.
Carolyn was an exceptional woman and mother.  Playful, quick witted, and a quirky sense of humor would describe her.  Full of grit, she defined strength and courage.  As a single mother of four, she worked several jobs all at once to provide during her earliest years until she obtained a job as an airframe mechanic at Lockheed Martin.  Over the years, she worked her way up, even attending school for a promotion to MRB, scoring top of her class, all while managing a home and always finding time to also be Team Mom. She persevered through many challenges as a female in a mostly male work environment  which was quite a feat in that time period. After twenty eight years, and single handedly changing the future for the two children still at home, she retired.
Music, singing, and performing on stage was a lifelong passion for Carolyn, and she even had the opportunity to sing back up, as well as open a show for a few well known country music stars.
Carolyn met the love of her life, Michael Turner, in retirement, and the years they had together were the happiest in their lives.  She enjoyed her beloved hobbies of music, crocheting, and gardening, and thrifting into retirement, but the greatest joy of all, was just being Nana to her grandchildren.
The family is planning a Celebration of Life for spring 2022.

Hedwig "Hedy" James - July 10, 1922 - February 17, 2022

Departed: 02/17/2022 (Canton)
Obituary Preview: Hedwig “Hedy” James, 99, passed away in Mitchell, GA, on February 17, 2022.
Mrs. James was born in 1922 and raised in Switzerland. She has been a resident of Georgia most of her life. She immigrated to the United States with a group of friends after the war on a two year Sponsored Diplomatic Visa to further her English. She then met her future husband Richard James and the rest was an amazing love story. One of her proudest days was when she became an American citizen. Hedy raised her sons while Richard served in Korea and two tours in Viet Nam. She loved the Lord and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marietta, Georgia. Hedy saw the Lord’s work often in nature. Often saying “who else could create such a beautiful animal”? To say Hedy loved this country would be an understatement. She was a fierce supporter of the United States and supported our troops without question. Richard retired from the military and they moved to Georgia in 1966. After arriving on Parkwood Dr. in Kennesaw, Georgia, Hedy fell and broke her leg and “immanently” neighbors arrived bringing food. These unselfish actions justified the move and allowed for a lifelong bond of friendship. Our family to this day is truly blessed for their heart felt kindness!
Hedy was an avid reader and writer. She published her novel "Yesterday Was Long Ago" in 2019. She enjoyed people, nature, animals, crossword puzzles, needle point, knitting and England’s Royal history.
Hedy is survived by her sons, Ronald and Richard James, her daughter in law Jennifer James, and her granddaughter Shelby James.
Hedy cherished her long-time friends many from Parkwood Drive, Gatlinburg, TN. Winnwood Retirement Community and Mitchell who are too numerous to name, but please know how much she appreciated your calls, visits, cards, and most important, your prayers.
A memorial is planned to celebrate her life on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 1:00p at Lakeside Funeral Home, 121 Claremore Dr. Woodstock, GA 30188.

Stephen Richard Cohen - July 07, 1940 - January 25, 2022

Departed: 01/25/2022 (Canton)
Obituary Preview: Stephen Richard Cohen, son of the late Jacob B and Evelyn Roth Cohen, passed away after a short illness on January 25th, 2022. He was 81 years old. His battle with several medical issues in recent years proved his bravery and his ability to face everyday life challenges with a smile.
He is survived by his wife of more than 30 years, Florence Virginia Cohen (Ginnie), his four children, Howard Cohen of Los Angeles, California; Martin Cohen of Laconia, New Hampshire; Lauren Rodgers (Mike) of McLean, Virginia; Sharon Bridges (Chad) of Cumming, Georgia; and his four grandchildren Olivia, Kinsley, Grayson, and Ella. Steve is also survived by his brothers Malcolm Cohen of Andover, Massachusetts, and Gary Cohen (Janet) of Calabash, North Carolina, as well as his three nieces, Lisa Cohen, Jodi Sheer and Nancy Truett. In addition, he is survived by his stepchildren, Craig White (Kim), Kenneth White (Susan), and the late Keith White. Steve was also fortunate to be surrounded by a close group of friends who enriched the quality of his life, both in sickness and in health.
Steve grew up living half the year in Miami and half in Boston, as he and his father and two brothers raised and raced greyhounds. He served in the Air Force, had a successful career in sales, and thoroughly enjoyed a round of golf or two.  His favorite past-times were watching football and cheering on the Atlanta Braves. Steve also knew his way around the kitchen. He loved to cook and be in the kitchen making food for Ginnie and his loved ones.
Steve's all-time greatest passion was spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband to Ginnie, a proud Daddy to his two sons and twin girls, and a loving Papa to his four grandchildren. He and Ginnie were always happy to make the hour and a half drive to Cumming to see Sharon and her family. We all joked that he would fall asleep on the couch within 5 minutes, but it was the fact that he would continually make the effort to be there, and cherish any and every opportunity he had to be with his grandbabies. Steve and Ginnie also traveled to Vienna, Austria, in 2017 to visit his daughter, Lauren and her family overseas, and more recently, even made the trip to Virginia to be there for the birth of his youngest grandchild, Ella. Steve, along with his four children, are incredibly thankful for Ginnie’s sons, and their families, for their help, care, and love. More than anything, we want to remember Steve and Ginnie, together, spending quality time in their home in Peachtree City. This is where Steve was in his element – where you could find him working the grill, making food for everyone, watching sports from his favorite chair, planting and caring for his vegetables in his garden, and golf carting Scooter around the neighborhood.

Departed: 12/17/2021 (Canton)
Obituary Preview: On December 17th, 2021, our matriarch and friend, Vivian “Vickie” Lee Jones Gaddy departed this earthly life and was welcomed into the arms of her heavenly father. A warrior throughout her life, Vickie was born on New Year’s Day, 1952, in Asheville, NC at St. Joseph Hospital.
In addition to her precious Daddy, Leland James Wallace Jones Jr., Vickie is preceded in death by her faithful brothers; Scot Jones and Bart Jones, as well as, her hard-working grandparents, and her precious niece, Lindsey Jones.
She is survived by many loving individuals; including her mother Nora Lee Jones, brother, Brad Jones and wife Lynndayle Jones, daughter Chelsey Lee Gaddy, son James Scot Gaddy and wife Cassandra Lee Gaddy, in addition to her life partner and precious love, Mike Rice. She adored her grandsons; Peyton Lee Gaddy and Cyrus James Gaddy Mirheli.
Vickie was incredibly proud of her nephew, Army Specialist, Nathanael Lee Jones and his children Zechariah and Lila. Known as “Aunt Vickie” to so many, she followed the many adventures of Brad Rice and his boys, Lindsey Jones’ boys, her Aunts and Uncles, and the Lunsford/Wilson family.  She thrived on the love of her extensive network of family and friends, and especially thanked God for her cousin who was like a sister to her, Janet Lunsford Scott.
Vickie contributed and was very proud of the numerous community organizations in which she served over her nearly 70 years in Asheville. A graduate of A.C. Reynolds High School, she attended Blanton’s Business College and was a James McClure Clark scholarship recipient. As a notary public, she was a loyal citizen of Buncombe County her entire life. She served in the West Asheville Business Association, The Lions Club, The Haw Creek Neighborhood Association, and held office as Rotary Club President. Vickie loved music, especially Dolly Parton, The Kingdom Heirs, and Steep Canyon Rangers. She was an avid patron of the theatre community in Western NC and cherished her son’s charitable works through his motorcycle club. She was an active supporter of local politics, supporting Chris Pelly, and most recently AJ Fox as a candidate for Buncombe County Sheriff. A supporter of veteran’s welfare, she was a two time volunteer for the Honor Air organization, accompanying veterans to visit Washington, DC. Vickie was instrumental in many community projects, such as organizing the construction of the RiverLink bridge and the Haw Creek Sidewalk Project.
Vickie traveled throughout the mountains learning about her history until her final days, and was especially interested in the works of Wilma Dykeman, her favorite author. A current member of Oteen Baptist Church, Vickie’s extended church family included Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and Grassy Branch Baptist. Vickie loved the Lord, was a fierce prayer warrior, family historian, and sometimes even a comedian. “My life alone shows the type of love I gave as a daughter, a sister, a mother and a mate. Cherish those memories of me, please.”
A celebration of life will be in the spring of 2022.
