Obituary Preview: Jose Oswaldo Meza-Morales, a man of wit and wisdom, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2024, in Paterson, New Jersey, at the age of 80. Born on March 21, 1944, in Lima, Peru, Jose's infectious laughter and bright intellect touched the lives of all who knew him. Jose's journey led him from the vibrant streets of Lima to the bustling city of Paterson, where he established his home and heart. In Paterson, he met and married the love of his life, Justina, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories until her passing. Together, they raised two remarkable sons, Dennis and Yury, who inherited their father's humor and sharp mind. Jose's legacy continues through his adoring grandchildren, Elyza, Cicely, Fred, Nathalia, Dennis, Adiel, and Yury, who were the apple of his eye. His stories and jokes will live on in their hearts, ensuring his memory will be cherished for generations to come. He was a beloved brother, a cherished uncle to his nieces and nephews, and a fond cousin to many in Peru. A skilled machinist by trade, Jose dedicated many years to his craft, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues. His attention to detail and problem-solving abilities were second to none, and his contributions to the field left a lasting impact. Away from the workbench, Jose was a master at the game of bingo. His love for the game was well-known, and his presence at the bingo hall was always a highlight for fellow players. With every number called, his anticipation and enthusiasm were contagious, and his laughter could be heard across the room. Jose was a man who could best be described as funny and intelligent. His humor was a beacon of light, bringing joy to every gathering. His intelligence was not just in his skilled hands, but in the way he approached life, always with a thoughtful perspective and a kind word. As we say goodbye to Jose Oswaldo Meza-Morales, we celebrate a life lived with joy, love, and a touch of mischief. He was a man who made every moment count and who left an indelible mark on the hearts of his family and friends. His spirit, so full of life and laughter, will be greatly missed but never forgotten. In honoring Jose's life, we reflect on the warmth and happiness he brought to our lives. His journey may have ended on this earth, but his story will continue to be told with smiles and fond memories by all who were privileged to know him.

Departed: 03/25/2024 (Paterson)
Obituary Preview: Ms. Joyce Ardena (Arrrington) Williams was born June 3, 1932 in Enfield, North Carolina. She was the youngest of thirteen children born to the late Dandy and Rozenna (McWilliams) Arrington. Ms. Joyce was raised on a family-owned farm where hard work and family love was in abundance. She was also a member of Wayman A.M.E Church. She attended school in Enfield, graduating from Eastman High School. Her attendance at Winston-Salem North Carolina, an HBCU, was brief due to illness.
Yearning for a different life, Ms. Joyce migrated from the rural south. She made a home in the city of Paterson, New Jersey, where she wed Willie T. Williams. This union blessed them with five beautiful children. Ms. Joyce was a woman of incredible determination as well as a wonderful mother, wife, and an impeccable housekeeper. She was devoted to her children and provided them with love, support, wisdom, a strong moral compass, tender discipline, and guidance. Her doors were always open. An active PTA parent, her children’s and grandchildren’s education goals were always encouraged and supported. Education was a priority.
Ms. Joyce was an excellent cook, a talent that was nourished by her mother. Preparing meals for a large family was a simple task. She made peeling an apple an art form. Her “white rice” was savored by her grandchildren, and one cannot exclude her homemade drop biscuits. They were a number one request. Her homemade vegetable soup and chicken & dumplings were delectable meals that warmed the soul. Momma Joyce was also a seamstress and canner. Her homemade preserves were a delicacy. She was also a chore master. Housekeeping was a daily duty. These expectations were also imposed on the grandchildren. Grandma Joyce was very meticulous and did not play.
Ms. Joyce was employed at Universal and held other job titles until enduring health disabilities, but her mental strength never wavered. Thereafter, she became a nourishing caregiver to her grandchildren, as needed. Grandma Joyce was a pleasant delight. She provided undivided attention to each of the eight grandchildren. They embraced her warmth, her love, and her generosity. She taught them each lessons, lessons with everlasting impressions.
Ms. Joyce valued family time. Family gatherings were embraced with smiles, good cooking, and endless laughter. Visits to North Carolina were a heightened sense of joy for her. Ms. Joyce was the doted-on youngest sibling. The love that was shared by her and her siblings was remarkable and warming to witness.
Ms. Joyce converted and became a Jehovah Witness in 1990. As an avid reader, reading scriptures, The Watch Tower, and various magazines were routine. She enjoyed entertainment, the arts, and life overall. She created a life on her terms. Ms. Joyce welcomed seven great grandchildren with enormous pride. Family was everything to her.

She was happiest at family functions, whether it be holiday gatherings, family trips to Broadnax, VA, spending time with her cousins, whom she loved dearly, or just coming together with her parents, siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews at the family home. Sue was a devoted grandmother to Maya English and Madisyn Dugger, who affectionately called her “Ma.” Sue was so proud of their many accomplishments, which would always result in her sharing her bright smile as she lovingly discussed her granddaughters, whom she called her "princesses.”. Sue was one of the oldest of her many cousins, and they all treated her with a level of affection and respect she never took for granted.
Sue was an active member of her church, Life Changing Word Church International, where she was the head usher, praise and worship member and assisted everywhere else she was needed alongside her right hand and devoted cousin Rosa Jones. Her brother-in-law, William Cash, was her pastor, and her baby sister, Kim Cash, served as her first lady. Most times, the first person people would see as they arrived at church was Sister Gina. You would be greeted by her at the door with her infectious smile, and she would provide you with a program, envelope, Kleenex, or peppermint if necessary.

She leaves behind many who loved her including her daughter Alicia, granddaughters Maya and Madisyn, stepson Kevin Stancil; parents Eugene and Margaret; siblings Glen (Elaine), Orlando “Joe” (Deborah), Claudy “Chop” (Andrea), Gary (Rhonda), and Kim (William); sister-in-law Denise “Dee-Dee" Hall; brother-in-law Ronald Blakney; aunts Marion Caviness (Tommy), Bernice Powell; God-son David Robinson; and God-daughter Chantel “Chan” Cuavers; 8 nieces, 8 nephews, lots of cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Leyland Godfrey Thorne - August 06, 1947 - December 05, 2023

Departed: 12/05/2023 (Paterson)
Obituary Preview: Funeral Service will be Live-Streamed on Friday, December 15, 2023 - 4:00 PM EST. Visit the Tribute Wall above to view the Live/Recorded Webcast.
The clock, faithfully ticking for seventy-six years, softly came to a halt on December 5, 2023. Quoting Matthew 11:28, "Come unto me all ye that laboured and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," Leyland Godfrey Thorne responded to the call. Now, he rests serenely in a place free from sorrow and pain.
Leyland fondly known as Pepe or Pin was born on August 6, 1947, to the late Phyllis Thorne and Godfrey James. After his father's death, Leyland went to live with his paternal Aunt Mary; whom he referred to as “Mama” at Eldorado Village West Coast Berbice. His formative years were spent at Eldorado Village West Coast Berbice where he attended St.Albans Anglican School, Belladrum, and, then Christ Church Secondary School in Georgetown, Guyana. At Christ Church Secondary he bonded with his teacher Phyllis Crawford, who played a pivotal role in mentoring him through his secondary education and beyond. She also welcomed him into her home, providing a safe place for him to reside while he was in the city.
Leyland joined the Guyana Police Force where he served from the hinterland to the Coastland. He did this job with great pride and diligence. In 1985, Leyland entered matrimony with Sarah Parks, and from their union, a son named Yuen was born. Additionally, he fathered a daughter named Ntkisi. In 2001, Leyland migrated to the United States of America and took on the role of a security guard at the Harvard Security Company, where he remained employed until his passing. In 2012, he wed Ingrid Nedd, and she remained a pillar of support until the end of his life.
Leyland was the epitome of tidiness; not a shirt dared to go untucked, and his pants were on a permanent wrinkle-free vacation. The man had a knack for keeping things spick and span! Leyland had a heart full of kindness, especially if he found you intriguing. His beaming laughter could light up a room, and when it came to discussions, he never surrendered easily—always vying for that last word. Truly, he was quite the "character." Wondering about the origins of the nickname "Pepe"? Well, Leyland earned that title because of his passion for dancing, much like the renowned dancer Pepe Romo. Now, as for "Pin," it's not a tough puzzle to solve. Despite his seemingly insatiable appetite, Leyland managed to defy the laws of gaining weight, earning him the affectionate nickname.
Leyland is survived by his dear wife Ingrid, children Yuen and Ntkisi, grandchildren Jaden and Jaheel, foster brother Reginald Grenville, sister Princess, brothers Joseph and Rudolph, Uncle of Michael, Jasmine, Keil, Kaym, Diane, Ashley, Cousin of Roxanne, Patrick, Pinky, Barbara, Debbie, Kim, Ainsley, Marie, Shirley, Eudelene, Cleveland, Joylyn, Abraham, and the Daniels, Hamers, Nobles, Grenille, Fraser, Cousin in Law of Gary, Donna, Leslie Floyd, and host of great nieces, nephews, and many cousins, cousins-in-law, and friends, especially Musah. “Earth has no sorrow, that heaven cannot heal!”
