Elizabeth Harmatys Park - September 10, 1942 - May 16, 2024

Departed: 05/16/2024 (Burlington,)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Elizabeth (Betty) Harmatys Park - extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother, poet, scholar, and friend died on May 16, 2024 due to complications from heart surgery. She was 81.
She was born on the south side of Milwaukee on September 10, 1942 to Stanley and Rose (Westphal) Harmatys. Her fondest childhood memories were of her cousins and three sisters Dolly, Judy, and Marge. She loved to recall her years at Mercy High School. During her first year at Marquette University, she met the love of her life, John Park, and they were married on July 2,1966. For as long as anyone can remember, the names “John and Betty” have gone together. They loved to dance, whether it was at a Polka Fest or a Rolling Stones concert. Their marriage was a true friendship and a beautiful love story.
Betty was passionate about many things. She was an advocate to end gun violence. She was a longtime prison minister. She cherished her Catholic faith as a lifelong feminist, while seeing the world as a sacred place, charged with meaning and grace. Betty was generous and always thought of others. Her last words before her surgery were a prayer for those in war zones who also need serious surgery, but are unable to receive it. Hers was a life well-lived, in all of the important ways.
She earned her BA from Marquette University in 1964, her MSW from the Catholic University of America in 1966, and her PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin in 2005 where her dissertation was on Catholic liturgy. She worked as a clinical social worker and an educator until her retirement when she had time to focus on her poetic talent. Betty, a widely published poet, was the recipient of the Wisconsin Writers Association Jade Ring Prize in 2012. She was the current Racine County Poet Laureate.
Betty is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, John R. Park, MD. She is also survived by her dear daughter and son Karen E. Park (Martyn) and Adam J. Park (Tina) and her 8 adoring grandchildren: Martha, Leo, Arthur, Aurora, Sophia, Josephine, Aaron and Caroline. She is further survived by countless friends whose lives she made immeasurably richer and fuller. We would also like to express our gratitude to Zoe and Linnea, her nurses in the Cardiac ICU at St. Luke’s Hospital, for their skilled and compassionate care in the last two days of Betty’s life.
Visitation will be at Schutte-Daniels Funeral Home in Burlington on Friday, May 24, from 4-7 pm with a family-led rosary at 7 pm. The Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, May 25, at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Church in Lyons with a brunch to follow in the church hall. Sharon E. Smolensky - February 04, 1949 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Burlington,)
Obituary Preview: Incredible.
Please join my family: my daughter Marla (Rich, deceased) Hinners, Ryan (Amy Molinski) Smolensky, their children: Riley, Hannah and Lily Hinners and McKenzie Molinski along with my brothers and sisters: Joanne Lindoerfer, Kathy (Michael)Eder, Maureen (Dennis) Winkler, Barbara Emerson, Jim (Laurie) Sheahan, Judy (JoeBob) Scaro, Joe (Pua) Sheahan and Dan (Larissa) Sheahan, and In-laws: Marc, Mike and Gina Smolensky on Monday April 22, 2024 at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home from 1pm to 4pm with a service at 4pm to celebrate the incredible life I had.
I was born in Antioch IL in 1949, the fourth daughter of Joe and Mary Jayne (Robinson) Sheahan. We moved to my current Kansasville farm when I was the tender age of 4. I grew up there with my nine brothers and sisters where we learned the joy of hard work and I developed a lifelong love of horses. It was an incredible childhood and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. In 1998 I was fortunate to purchase the family farm from my brothers and sisters where I lived until my death on April 10th. I was predeceased by my husband, David, my son-in-law Rich, parents, Joe and Mary Jayne Sheahan, my sister Harriette Juchemich and my in-laws, Jack and Esther Smolensky.
In February of 1970, David and I were married (the only month of the year he wasn’t playing some sport or other) in St Mary’s of Dover. In April of 1971, we were blessed with a precious baby girl, Marla, followed by a bouncing baby boy, Ryan, in December of 1973. The best years of my life were watching them grow, learning to walk and talk and develop their individual personalities. They couldn’t be more different from each other and I couldn’t love them more. We lived in Racine for a few years before moving to our home on Plank Rd in Burlington where we raised our kids and formed many lasting, incredible memories.
We both played several sports-softball, basketball, racket ball-until one day David came home and announced he was going to give up all other sports and concentrate on golf. I thought that sounded like a plan. It was a good decision that led to many incredibly good times on various golf courses and vacations and at Kenosha Country Club.
Throughout the years I had several “careers”. As a teenager I worked at the A & W Root beer stand on Hwy 11 as a car hop. I had a short stint at Johnson Wax before company policy required that I quit when we got married. Next I worked at Piggly Wiggly, first in Racine and later at the Burlington location. After 5 years I decided to branch out on my own and bought a small convenience store in Cedar Park. A few years after that I decided I wanted to also sell gasoline so I bought the A & W Root Beer stand-yep, the same one I used to work at-added gas pumps and remodeled it into a new convenience store. I added a breakfast area and soon had all of the movers and shakers in the area coming in for coffee and camaraderie every morning. Hard times financially but met some incredible people.
I sold the store in 1994 and after a brief retirement I decided to try my hand at real estate sales. I had an incredibly fun and successful 28 year career beginning at Bear Realty in Burlington. After 5 years I opened Professional Realty Group which I ran for another 5 years. During this time I “accidentally” bought a bank but didn’t have enough money for the purchase. I called my good friend Dennis Spankowski and First Quest Investments LLC was launched. Over the years First Quest bought several single family foreclosures, a restaurant, the aforementioned bank and developed a 19 home subdivision on Britton Road with Matt and Mike Burke. We also purchased two ocean front properties in Crystal Beach TX where the Smolenskys and Spankowskis enjoyed many incredible vacations. Incredibly exciting times! Our last acquisition as FQI was in 2013 when we, with the help of our good friend Brian Lily, bought Dover Farms. It was 78 acres with a 42 stall horse stable and a 5/8 mile race track but not a single horse! It was built in 2002 as a harness racing facility and had been rented out sporadically for the previous 10 years but no one had had a vested interest in maintaining it. We spent the next 10 years rehabbing, fixing and improving it adding many pastures, an outdoor arena, auto waterers, a hay storage shed, blacktopped drive etc. We also divided and developed Dover Ridge, a 15 lot subdivision at the north end of the property. We now have an incredibly beautiful boarding facility with 80+ horses and their incredible owners!
One day while getting my hair cut Jean Jacobsen convinced me that what I really needed to do was to go hiking in the mountains in Europe with her and a group of like aged and like-minded people. It sounded like a good idea and it was! Over the next few years we hiked in Austria, Slovenia, Italy, France and Switzerland. I believe that somewhere there is a photo of me on my cell phone on the top of a mountain closing a real estate deal! I even parasailed off of a mountain in Austria. It was incredible. I leave behind besides my immediate family, lots of nieces and nephews, dozens of cousins. Along the way I was also fortunate to pick up many great friends including my golfing friends, my hiking friends, my high school friends, my real estate friends and my barn/horse friends. The Hegemann clan: Skip, Stephanie, Evelyn, Whitney, Andi, Raylie and Diana also brightened many days for me. Many thanks to gig, the soup lady! But anyone who knew me knows that my kids and grandkids were my life. They brought me so much joy and happiness, each in their own way-I wouldn’t change a minute of my time with any of them. I am incredibly proud of all of them. I love you completely! Please come and get to know them all at the celebration of my life. They’re incredible! I told you it was an incredible life!
