Russel Robert Setterlun - August 03, 1937 - December 28, 2023

Departed: 12/28/2023 (Thiensville)
Obituary Preview: A lifetime shaped by the cycle of seasons – from growth and bounty to harvest and nourishment – came to a close for Russel Setterlun in the early evening of Thursday, December 28, 2023 at home in Thiensville, WI at the age of 86. His walk was peaceful and in the immediate company of his wife Carole and two children, Ann and Stephen. Russel was preceded in death by his mother Bernice, father Roland, and brother Douglas (Mary). Russ is survived by his wife Carole, son Stephen, daughter Ann (Michael Taylor), three grandchildren, Andrés, Alejandro, and Olivia, and stepsister Valerie Ritter.
Who was this man we love? Russ was a one-of-a-kind faithful husband, devoted father, and magnificent grandfather. He gave the best hugs, the most love, and the least criticism. He was always available for conversation, encouragement, and listening. Being a man of great faith enabled Russ to be openly kind, infinitely patient, a source of wisdom, and a champion of the underserved.
Long lakeshore walks, rambles with children and grandchildren in South Woods, and evening seminary strolls with a hand in his refreshed Russ’ soul and gentle spirit. When not on the road in a tiny Irish rental or among his Wisconsin corn fields, his mind was alive anticipating his next adventure. In these ways he introduced his children to the world, its wonders, and the joy of pursuing curiosity. He cherished being a loving and playful grandpa who texted silly jokes, loved family celebrations, and played Go Fish over and over and over.
Russ was unpretentious, unflappable, and helpful beyond compare. Can you believe this guy would happily dust, vacuum, clean toilets, and wash ALL the dishes from Carole’s manic cooking and baking sessions? And, yes, he loved Carole’s cooking, although peanut butter toast remained his signature dish.
When Russ tired of watching the Packers on mute, he would venture out to pursue his love of mowing the lawn and passion for tending Mom’s garden flowers. Careful nurturing paid off and many of the plants were separated and shared. Russ took great pride and pleasure in trying to outsmart squirrels, foster butterflies, and tend to the neighborhood birds.
Russ’ food service career with Sysco Corporation had him evaluating many vegetable products. In spite of the initial fear of a “funny TV” appearing on the office desk, he embraced the keyboard, as he did with all challenges, and used it as a tool to continue exploring the world. When he finally retired, his sport coats, dress shoes, and ties were all joyfully donated.
We will wrap our hearts and minds around these precious memories as we move ahead without Russ. They will sustain us and give us courage to love, hope, and dream.
Russ lived his life by setting an example for those of us fortunate enough to know him. We have been blessed by his presence in our lives and it is for us to carry his influence forward. We can now – as we did when he was among us – bring a spirit of goodness into our words, our actions, and our choices. We will begin by doing so with a celebration of his life with a brief 10:30am visitation, 11:00am Mass, and luncheon at Lumen Christi Catholic Church in Mequon, WI on Monday, January 22. Please join us in person and please join us in carrying Russ’ light with you.
We deeply thank the surgeons, doctors, nurses, therapists, aides (especially Dr. Nand, Dr. Rebholz, Katie, Deriana, and Kate), and Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital, Froedtert Hospital, Horizon Hospice, and Amada Senior Care. A special thank you to our family and many, many friends who lovingly supported us on this journey.

Including the occasional refugees ( The Urchins friends).During his prime Mel was an electrician 2nd Class on the navy supply ship USD AKA 4 Pollux. He called it the floating Sears catalogue. Purchasing chinaware sets and sending them back to the states was his side job. Mel worked at Delco Electronics  a decision  GM for 10 years as a quality control engineer for the Apollo space program in the 1960’s. Mel also free lanced as a business analyst, for companies that needed help with production. With his knowledge of being an engineer dad was always finding ways to save money by MacGyvering it, or as well called it Melisums. The window shunts he created to let air in and but keep the rain out. Genius! In his golden years he found the love of shopping for a good deal. Between The Village , nutcrackers, Santa’s and yes, even “black olives”, he was always looking for that deal. His hobby, “The Village”, which ended up being a 30 year endeavor, started as a small village on top of the baby grand piano in the living room at Christmas time. After years of expansions and relocations, a permanent structure was finally created in the basement of his Cedarburg home. Over the years, The Village expanded from a downtown theme, to a full on suburban neighborhood and finally the country side! This filled an entire 10x12 room. Complete with train station, skating rink and stable, not to mention hundreds of structures, carriages and figurines. Dad was so proud of his marvel to say the least. As every town needs a name, a welcoming sign to his village was made… and we named it Melville. When Dad decided it was time to let Melville go, everyone picked a small portion of the village for their very own to remember and, to this day we keep the legacy going. Each piece kept by family and friends bore the mark, “from the original town of Melville.”We are all very fortunate to have been a part of Melvin’s life. He worked hard and was a fighter all the way to the very end. Making sure his family was cared for was Dad’s way of showing his love for us. His memories, stories, and traditions will be cherished and shared for generations to come. So, every time you pass by a historical sign, see a Christmas village, or a station wagon (these days a minivan) filled with a family of travelers, take a moment and remember our Dad, Mel, and feel his spirit! Melville may have been massive. But the village he created at home, was his greatest achievement. His spirit will live on with us and he will be remembered on a daily basis. We will always treasure you until we meet again!

Jeanne E. Holper - November 28, 1949 - November 21, 2023

Departed: 11/21/2023 (Thiensville)
Obituary Preview: The best way to begin an obituary about Jeanne Bussone Holper is to say that, if it were up to her, there would never be a need for one, because she had no plans to pass away anytime soon. After being diagnosed with a terminal illness over two decades ago, Jeanne repeatedly confounded the expectations of every doctor, nurse, and rehab professional she ever met, living with resiliency, gumption and glorious irreverence until almost 74.
Jeanne was born in Milwaukee, WI to John and Elise Bussone on November 28, 1949. She was raised in Mequon, WI alongside her sister Margaret, where she graduated Homestead High School in 1967. Originally planning to study education, Jeanne instead decided to pursue a career in nursing, where her unique blend of compassion, intelligence, and fearlessness led her to specialize in oncology. She became one of the first frontline healthcare professionals to dedicate herself to fighting the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. Jeanne proudly served as the chairwoman of AIDS services of Austin, Texas where she volunteered to provide education to the prison population, in schools, and on the streets of Austin. This tireless effort served the goal of preventing further transmission and empowering affected peoples to protect themselves. Her advocacy didn’t end with education: Jeanne spent countless hours as a bedside nurse in hospitals and home health providing compassionate and skilled care.
While Jeanne’s career fueled her intellectually and emotionally, she truly thrived in her role as a mother. She began to experience significant health problems when her children were very young, but never allowed discomfort to impede her presence in their lives. She could be spotted cheering sideline at her son’s soccer games, helping her daughter with homework, and often – always, actually – opening her home to her childrens’ friends and anyone else who needed a place to go or an “extra mom.” As much as she loved her years as a mom, her kids have come to accept that she treasured her job as a grandmother even more, as her grandson Emerson filled her with more love and pride than even seemed possible.
Jeanne is survived proudly by her daughter Lisel (Erik) Loven, son Randall (Alexandra) Trumbull-Holper, grandson Emerson Trumbull-Holper, and best friend and sister Margaret Bussone.
While all who knew her will say that she had an indomitable spirit and will to live that defied all reasonable and even some outlandish expectations, her family knows she didn’t do it alone. They would like to thank the village of healthcare professionals who kept her with them for far more years than they were expecting. This list is long and by no means all-encompassing, but thanks go to: Dr. Tomashek, Dr. Gehl, and the rest of the teams of Interventional Radiology and Testing and Treatment at CSM-Ozaukee; Dr. Bomzer and Dr. Shamah and their team at Aurora Cancer Care, with a specific nod to Theresa, the wonder nurse who could always find a vein when nobody else could; and Dr. Christopher Budny, her PCP for 25 years. It is no exaggeration to say that Dr. Budny’s compassionate, knowledgeable, and patient-centered care helped Jeanne come back from injury and infection time and time again to be with her loved ones. Finally, Jeanne’s family would like to thank the team at Lawlis Family Hospice for their incredible care, not only for Jeanne in her final week, but their care of her entire family.
There will be a visitation at Wisconsin Memorial Park (13235 W Capitol Dr, Brookfield, WI 53005) on December 7th from 1:30 to 3:00 PM, followed by an internment from 3:00 to 3:30.  After the service, there will be a celebration of Jeanne’s life with her family starting at 5:00pm at Foxtown Brewing (6411 W Mequon Rd, Mequon, WI 53092). This event in particular she is no doubt highly miffed to be missing. All who knew and loved Jeanne or her family are welcome to join.

After selling Gem-Mac in 1986, Wayne retired and he and his wife Shirley split time between their homes in La Quinta, CA and Elkhart Lake, WI.  Wayne enjoyed playing golf, traveling with his family, going to dinner with his wife and many friends as well as watching his two sons play football at Clemson and his three grandsons play football & baseball for Homestead High School.  He had a creative and brilliant business mind, an infectious personality that exuded confidence and was always very generous and fair to others.  During his final few years of life, Wayne could usually be found sitting in his den with his Bible in hand and a Christian television show on the tube.   He will be greatly missed by many!
