Departed: 05/11/2024 (Janesville)
Obituary Preview: Paul H. Horswill, age 79, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2024, at home with his wife, Ann, by his side. He was born December 30, 1944, in Chippewa Falls, WI; to Hugh D. and Doris (Nelson) Horswill. Together with his brother Bob, the family moved to Janesville in 1946. His sister, Linda joined the Horswill family in 1948. Paul attended Washington and Roosevelt Elementary Schools, Marshall Junior High, and Janesville High School, graduating in 1963. While in high school he participated in many sports and other activities, excelling in football and track.
Upon graduation he attended UW-Madison before enlisting in the United States Navy in April of 1965. Following Recruit Training, he attended Nuclear Power School on the East Coast and in Idaho Falls, ID. While he had hoped to be a submariner, he was transferred to the U.S.S. Long Beach, a nuclear power surface ship, serving in the engineering department in nuclear power and interior communications. The ship made three West PAC cruises, which allowed Paul to visit many places including Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.
In July 1969 he married Ann M. Fenney. The couple lived a year in Napa, CA, before his discharge in 1971 when they moved back to Janesville. In 1972, Paul resumed his education at UW-Whitewater, graduating in December of 1975 with a B.S. in Science Education and began graduate school; which during this time their son, Eric, was born.
He began teaching in Chippewa Falls, WI, in 1976. Shortly thereafter, the couple moved back to Janesville where Paul taught at Edison and Marshall Junior High Schools. Their daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1978. He continued his studies earning an M.S. Broadfield Science Degree from UW-Whitewater and Master’s Degree in Administration from UW-Madison. Most of his teaching career was spent at Janesville Craig High School before Paul retired in June of 2001.
Paul loved the outdoors and spent many summers mowing lawn at both the Blackhawk and Riverside Golf Courses. Ornithology was of special interest. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing before the ravages of Inclusion Body Myositis, a degenerative muscular disease, and COPD kept him from being active. Although unable to golf with a group of former teachers and friends, he continued to join them for Wednesday breakfasts.
Paul was an avid sports fan. Watching Badger and Packer football was his favorite. He offered commentary when officials missed or called what he considered a wrong penalty. Bucks basketball and Brewers baseball were frequently viewed as well although football was his favorite. He was looking forward to watching the track events in the summer Olympics. Paul was incredibly proud of his four grandchildren and felt blessed they lived near him. He enjoyed their visits and learning about their activities.
Paul is survived by his wife, Ann; son, Eric (Jen Mosher) and grandson, Cole; and their daughter, Elizabeth (Dr. Andy) Paull and grandchildren: Evelyn, Oliver and Elaina. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Bob (Merrill) Horswill; sister, Linda Horswill; sister in-law, Marilyn (Charles) Boehmke; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Departed: 05/11/2024 (Janesville)
Obituary Preview: Robert “Bob” J. Czubek, age 87, passed away on May 11, 2024 at Huntington Place in Janesville. He was born in Milwaukee on June 6, 1936; to Stanley and Martha (Koput) Czubek. Bob graduated from Bay View High School in Cudahy, WI and pursued a career in design after completing his education at Acme Tool and Die. This path led him to his first design position at Allen Bradley in Milwaukee.
In 1965, he married Sandra Sobczak and together they eventually settled in Janesville, where Bob worked as a mechanical engineer at Gilman Engineering until his retirement in 1999, having attained the position of Chief Engineer. One of his notable accomplishments was being part of the design team for the robotic machinery used in the production of the Volvo car line in Sweden.
Having grown up near Lake Michigan, Bob developed a profound passion for sailing. He often reminisced about his sailing days, taking odd jobs around the Yacht Club for the chance to sail. He delighted in sharing his love for sailing with his children, taking them out on his small Butterfly boat and later on his 28-ft Pearson sailboat, which he docked at the South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee. Besides his own boat, Bob sailed on larger boats in over 15 Chicago to Mackinac races. He was anything but grumpy and those who knew him enjoyed his teasing nature and quick wit.
Family vacations were cherished moments spent camping and sailing throughout the United States. The family spent many weekends and vacations in their pop-up camper. In retirement, Bob and Sandy embarked on adventures to New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, and various states within the U.S. An avid walker, Bob could often be spotted on the Ice Age trail in Janesville. Bob was a man of quiet wisdom, cherished by all who knew him.

Ernie F. Furrer - March 18, 1941 - May 08, 2024

Departed: 05/08/2024 (Janesville)
Obituary Preview: Ernest “Ernie” Furrer, age 83 passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 surrounded by his loving and blessed family. To the very end, Ernie fought for every breath until the Lord called him home.
Ernie was born in Blanchardville, Wisconsin on March 18, 1941, the son of Casper and Alma (Mellenberger) Furrer. He was married to Judith (Judy) Furrer on December 5, 1959 in Belleville, Wisconsin and they were blessed with five children: John, Anita, Suann (Sue), Robert (Robb) and Jeffrey (Jeff).
Ernie graduated from Blanchardville High School in 1959 where he was a phenomenal four sport athlete in football, basketball, baseball and track. When recently asked which was his favorite sport, he indicated football with basketball and baseball tied for second. No surprise while reading his high school yearbooks over the past several weeks, he was referred to as the “GO TO GUY” by teammates. His excellence was recognized when he was inducted into the Blanchardville/Pecatonica Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022. He was humbled and proud of this recognition.
Shortly after graduation from Blanchardville High, Ernie became an entrepreneur purchasing a milk route with Bowman Dairy. It was here where he continued to expound on his farm boy work ethic by starting work at 4:00 a.m. daily. It was during this time he and Mom started a family having John at age 19 and Anita at age 20. Dad and Mom had five infant mouths to feed by the time they were 30 years old. This led to Dad working at Bowman, driving home to drive a Belleville School bus and then proceeding to the nearest baseball diamond or basketball court to umpire or officiate. His hard work was fueled by his desire to keep Mom home to provide love and support to their five children.
Fast forward to 1971 and Dad began working at the Janesville Motor Vehicle Department as a Driver’s License Examiner. Based on condolences from friends over the past several days, it would appear Dad gave everyone currently driving in Janesville their driver’s license. To be clear, “the man with the gruff voice” did not pass everyone on their first attempt but I am told he kindly explained what they would need to improve to pass on their second attempt. While the gruff voice could be intimidating, people who knew Dad knew he was a teddy bear. And if you talked to dad about sports during the exam, your chances of passing the driver’s test improved significantly.
Anyone who knew Dad knows he LOVED sports! Whether coordinating games played at Back of the Yards, being supervisor of umpires at Dawson Fields, or officiating or umpiring thousands of WIAA and youth games in his career, dad was a fixture on the fields of competition. Dad was registered to officiate basketball and umpire baseball and softball for over 50 years. In fact, Dad had softball umpiring contracts from the WIAA on his desk for this year at AGE 83. Dad’s excellence in umpiring/officiating led to several WIAA state tournament assignments. He also was Conference Commissioner for both the Rock Valley and Big 8 Conferences. Like his life, Dad’s service to umpiring/officiating was respected because he was stern but fair. Dad was “at home” when he was on the field of competition and he LOVED the camaraderie with his fellow officials and the participants.
Dad’s devotion to Janesville athletics resulted in his induction to the Janesville Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. Upon learning of his selection, Dad said “I don’t understand why I was selected. I didn’t play high school sports in Janesville.” True to his humility, Dad really didn’t recognize the contributions he had made to Janesville athletics. Dad was not comfortable as a public speaker but true to his “let’s go get em” attitude, he nailed his induction speech and we were all filled with immense pride that evening.
While Dad was clearly a lover of sports, the love of Dad’s life was his family. There is NOTHING he would not do for Mom, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were all different and Dad loved them all equally. Like in high school, Dad was our “GO TO GUY” and we all will miss him tremendously. There is peace, however, as we know he was a Christian man of faith and is with the Lord.
Another staple in Dad’s life was his Sunday schedule. Having made a promise on his father’s death bed to attend church, Dad was a faithful attendee at Cargill Methodist Church. From Cargill, when weather allowed, Dad would hop on his moped and head to the Janesville Athletic Club for a little workout and a lot of talking with Athletic Club members. On the way home, it would be convenient to stop by one of his favorite social settings, East Point Sportz Pub, to get into a football or basketball pool and/or solve the world’s problems with fellow Pub patrons. And trust us, we TRIED to get Dad to wear a helmet. Oh well.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Judy, his children John (Cheri) Furrer, Anita Houriet, Sue Combs, Robb (Paula) Furrer and Jeff (Mary) Furrer, his grandchildren who he loved dearly Ryan (Allie)and Michael Furrer, Grace, Griffin (Jessie) and Grant Houriet, Travis (Heather) and Jessica (Matt) Combs, Aaron Furrer and Tyler Furrer as well as great-grandchildren Madison and Nolan Furrer, Tanner Houriet, Chloe, Thea and Lilly Combs and Liam Bumgarner. He is further survived by brother Harland and sister Alice. Finally, Dad leaves behind the “best puppy in the whole world” Abby.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for loved ones, and serving as a historical record of a person's existence. They also help to notify others of the passing and provide details about funeral services and memorial arrangements.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or newspaper may assist with writing or editing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and personal preference. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.

Can I include photos in an obituary?
