Edward Lee Moe - September 22, 1934 - April 14, 2024

Departed: 04/14/2024 (Libby)
Obituary Preview: Obituary – Edward “Ed” L. Moe
Edward (Ed) L. Moe, of Libby, passed away on April 14, 2024, at the age of 89, of a coronary event.  He was the first child of four born to Ole and Matilda Moe in Kabo, MT on September 22, 1934.
Ed was raised in the Paradise Valley outside Chinook, MT. He attended Zurich and Chinook schools, graduating in 1953. Ed entered the US Navy in 1954, traveling the world and becoming an Electricians Mate Class A. He returned to civilian life in 1958. He then attended electrician school in Chicago and upon completion he worked in Pickstown, SD at Fort Randal Dam as an engineer.  This is where he met his wife, Marjory Deurmier. They were married on January 15, 1962, in Wagner, SD. They enjoyed almost 57 years of marriage before she passed away in January of 2019.  They started their married life in Fort Peck, MT, where he worked as an engineer for 17 years. They moved, in 1978, to Libby where he worked at Libby Dam until his retirement. Ed and Marge were blessed with two children, Virginia and Richard.
Edward was a member of the Sons of Norway, Eagles and American Legion. Ed also worked with the Em Kayan Village Water System, where he lived for 45 years. He liked doing projects around the house and helping others with projects they had. With his engineering mind, you were sure his work would stand the test of time. Ed enjoyed music, playing several instruments, including the guitar, banjo, accordion, mandolin, and more. While living in Fort Peck, he played in a band for many years. In later years, he would play for small gatherings and at the Libby Care Center and Havre Care Center. If music was playing, you would find Ed and Marge dancing together. You could tell they had done that for many years. Their favorite past time was dancing. Ed’s daughter was able to dance with him one last time in his kitchen at Easter, just like when she was a little girl.
Edward is survived by his daughter, Virginia King of Havre; grandson, Victor and great-granddaughters, Kaylie and Ava of Havre; grandson, Aron of Inverness; son, Richard (Helen) Moe; grandsons, Travis and Trevor of Palmyra, VA; brother, Melvin (Kathy) Moe of Kalispell; sister, Bonnie (Ted) Fokken of Minneapolis, MN; and many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Dale Briese, who was always there for his Uncle. Departed: 04/01/2024 (Libby)
Obituary Preview: Graeme L. Baker, age 99, passed away after a short illness on April 1, 2024. He was born in Kalispell on March 7, 1925, to Graeme B and Rose L. Baker. Growing up in Kalispell during the great depression, he developed a keen interest in science and electronics. A teacher urged him to attend a course in amateur (ham) radio and he received his ham license at age 11, becoming one of the youngest persons to earn a ham license in the country.
He began his college education at Montana State College in Bozeman at age 16, majoring in chemistry. In 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy as an electronics technician and was posted to the Pacific island of Saipan, where he helped operate and maintain the Navy’s large radio transmitting station.
After returning to civilian life, he completed his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in chemistry at MSC. He continued studying chemistry at the University of Maryland and again at MSC, eventually earning a Ph.D. in chemistry. After receiving his doctorate from MSC, he was appointed to the chemistry faculty there. As a grad student at the University of Maryland, he met a young woman and she ended up bearing a child. The child was a daughter and was given up for adoption. About 4 years ago, she used one of the ancestor search companies to locate my dad and introduce herself to him. They were both very happy to be back in touch and Susan visited the ranch where she met the rest of her previously unknown family.
Graeme married Hazel Swenson of Billings in 1949. In 1968, he was appointed the chairman of the chemistry department at Florida Technological University (later renamed the University of Central Florida) in Orlando, FL. He retired from UCF in 1988 and bought property in Lincoln county, MT where he and his children, Kim and Kari, raised horses and cattle. Graeme also renewed his interest in ham radio and enjoyed participating in the Lincoln County Amateur Radio Group’s activities.

John T Dinkins - July 22, 1942 - April 01, 2024

Departed: 04/01/2024 (Libby)
Obituary Preview: John Dinkins (G’pa John) passed away on April 1st, 2024. He was born on July 22nd, 1942, in Sedro Woolley, WA to Gladys and Thomas Dinkins. John was a small man in stature but had the biggest heart ever (“don’t tell anyone”). Family and friends were the most important part of his life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved teaching his wife, children, and grandchildren his passion.  John was an electrician by trade and a proud member of the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) until he retired in 2002. At the age of 81, John was proud to tell everyone that he was the oldest Dinkins man to live since his father and grandfather had passed at a much younger age.
In his early years, John shot professional fast draw. He was a member of the Los Tiradores Fast Draw club and won many awards. He also taught hunter safety to numerous young and upcoming hunters.
John married the love of his life, Karen, on September 27th, 1986. He was a recovering alcoholic and told everyone when he married Karen that he gave up alcohol and chasing women but was not giving up his cigarettes.
In 1987 he went to work as the General Foreman and then later as the Superintendent of the electricians on Johnston Atoll for two years. His wife was able to join him four months after he started work on the island. When they returned, they made their home in Sedro Woolley, WA. John was not able to work in the trade due to a hand injury and then worked as an electrical estimator until 2001 when he had AAA and triple bypass surgery and subsequently retired. During these years, he enjoyed hound hunting and horseback riding and was a member of the local chapters of the Washington State Hound Association and the Backcountry Horseman. He was also a lifetime member of the Wildcat Steelhead Club and fished to his heart’s content after retirement. He was known at the Steelhead club for his blue tractor and cleaning up the boat launch after a flood. In 2007, he moved to Libby, Montana where he could truly enjoy his outdoor passions. He was known around town as the “guy that delivered fish.”  He also joined the Igniters Car Club and loved driving around in his 1940 Ford. He loved telling stories to everyone (often times the same one). John meant so much to a lot of people and loved being called “Grandpa” by all. His granddaughter said it best, “My hunting buddy, fishing buddy, confidant, reloader, my rock, my advisor, MY Grumpa and MY best friend” to all.
John fell ill at the beginning of hunting season in October 2023. He fought hard over the last five months with his wife caring for him every day. Although he was weak, he was still able to participate in very special hunting achievements with his family and had a very special Christmas with the grandkids. John leaves behind his wife, Karen of 37 years, his brother Butch, daughter Kelly (Marvin) Bryant, son Bruce (Teresa) Engle, and daughter Bonnie (Russell) Gronemyer. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Deborah & Randy Buckner, Kristi (Mersadies) Gallagher, Zeke and Logan Engle and his great grandchildren Dylan, Hunter, and Fisher Buckner. He was preceded in death by his mother Gladys Klein, Stepdad “Pops” and his father. At John’s request, there will not be a funeral. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Until we see you again, WE LOVE YOU!
From your wife: You are the love of my life forever.
From Gus:  You are the best dadles a girl could hope for.
From your G’da: You are the best G’pa ever.

Paul had a long career as a Laboratory Manager at St. John's Hospital in Libby, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to his work. However, Paul's love for his family and the outdoors was paramount. Camping, backpacking, and fishing in the beauty of the mountains of Northwest Montana, he found solace and joy in the tranquility of nature.

Margaret Ann Hacke - October 01, 1939 - March 25, 2024

Departed: 03/25/2024 (Libby)
Obituary Preview: Margaret Ann (Balf) Hacke, known affectionately as Marge, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2024. She was born on October 1, 1939, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, to Alice Rose Agnes (Carter) Balf and Thomas John Balf, joining her older brother, John (Jack) Thomas Balf. Marge's early years were spent in Eastport, Idaho, before her family relocated to Sweetgrass, Montana, in 1944, when her father was transferred to the customs office.
Tragically, Marge lost her father when she was just eleven years old, on October 17, 1950, when Thomas passed away in his sleep. In January 1951, her younger brother, Thomas Albert Balf, was born. Despite this early loss, Marge continued to persevere and graduated from Sunburst High School in 1957.
On February 15, 1958, Marge married her beloved, Lyle Henry Hacke. Their union was blessed with three children: Barbara Alice, David John, and Gaylynn Marie. Together, they started their lives, working on Gauss Farm in Sweetgrass, MT, obtaining her beauticians license, and later owning Brown’s Bus Line where they relocated to Libby, MT in 1967.
Marge was always about family.  Over the years, many family members stayed with Marge and Lyle as she was always there to get them back on their feet.  While the kids were growing up, she enjoyed snowmobiling in the winter and motorcycle rides in the summer with friends. Summers were often spent swimming and boating at their property on Angel Island at Bull Lake.
In 1980, Marge began her career with the Kootenai Forest Service, where she eventually rose to the position of Lands Specialist. Despite personal tragedies, including the loss of her brother Jack (1982), her mother Alice (1898), her son David (1992), and her brother Tom (1996), Marge remained resilient and continued to prioritize her family and career, retiring from the Forest Service in 1998.
Throughout her life, Marge found joy in travel. She and Lyle embarked on countless adventures, exploring nearly all 50 states in their fifth wheels and motorhomes. From Baja Mexico to the Panama Canal, Marge embraced new experiences with enthusiasm. She cherished moments spent with her grandchildren and celebrated milestones such as weddings and births with great joy.
After Lyle's passing in 2010, Marge continued to travel, visiting Alaska with her granddaughter Katlyn in 2012 and exploring Hawaii with her granddaughter Krystan and daughter Barb in 2014.  In 2019 family and friends came together in Libby to celebrate Marge’s 80th birthday, followed by another cruise to Alaska in 2019.  She remained active in her community, celebrating family milestones and birthdays with loved ones. In 2023, relocating to Salem, OR to be closer to family, Marge was blessed with her first great-grandchild River.  She spent a lot of time with River and loved watching him grow.  Marge leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and adventure. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.
Marge is survived by her daughters Barbara Resch (Greg), Gaylynn Green (Mike), daughter-in law Becky Cassel (Dave), grandchildren Krystan Resch, Lyle Resch, Katyln Sol (Jared), Jessica Green, Brandon Green, Kaden Wack, Kelbee Puckett, and great grandson River Resch.

The world became a little brighter on November 28, 1949, when Valorie was born in the old hospital across from the ballpark to Charles Eugene Fletcher and Geraldine Cottrell Fletcher.  On March 24, 2024, heaven gained an angel as Valorie gained her wings surrounded by a loving family after a 23-year battle with respiratory disease.
Valorie was the loving wife of Walter for 58 years.  The first 48 years she cared for him and the family, while Walt cared for her much of the last 10 years.  They were a strong force and faced many obstacles together, but still had strong love in the end.
She had a loving heart and was a caregiver to many.  As the second oldest of eleven, Valorie helped raise her siblings.  She then raised her kids, neighborhood kids, foreign exchange students and grandkids.  She was also instrumental in caring for many family members prior to their passing.
Valorie loved kids and was always found on the bleachers at her kids and grandkids sporting events.  Her grandchildren were the apple of her eye.
Valorie’s hobbies included fishing, hunting, and camping with Walt and the family.  She was known to go hunting in her station wagon and would come home with a deer in the back end.  She was always proud of her yard and garden.  She raised chickens and a milk cow for many years.

Sandra B Michelsen - January 09, 1946 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Libby)
Obituary Preview: Sandy Michelsen Age 78
Sandy finally lost her valiant battle with Spinocerebellar Ataxia, a rare genetic disorder, on March 21, 2024.
Some of Sandy's extraordinary qualities were being a wonderful wife, mother, and friend and overall, a great human being.
Sandy was born in Washington, DC January 9, 1946. She grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northern Virginia. She married the love of her life, Marty, on August 22, 1964, in Winchester, VA.
Shortly after their marriage they had the great honor of being a part of the NASA Headquarters effort to place men on the Moon in the decade of the 1960s. Sandy had a Top-Secret clearance at the age of 20. June 30, 1968, Sandy gave birth to their son Mark Alan Michelsen. April 4, 1968, when Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated, and parts of Washington were in flames - disorder was everywhere. Sandy and Marty evacuated the city. The next morning elements of the 82nd Airborne Division had established martial law in the Federal sector. Amazing and sad time in the turbulent 1960s.
After being a stay-at-home Mom until Mark was in school, she became a real estate agent for a while and began her twenty-year career as a legal secretary. The desire to move to the Northwest became stronger and stronger.
After "arriving" with a new home on 12 acres in Loudoun County, VA, they finally decided that the time for departure and a new life was necessary. In 1981 they moved to Post Falls, Idaho to an old farmhouse sight unseen. It was a bold move that was difficult and marvelous! Sandy became a legal secretary in Spokane, WA.
In 1986 they completed a move to the Puget Sound area of Washington; Sandy was a legal secretary at nearly twice the salary. Marty took a job with Boeing. It was a wonderful time and place to be then. Always, they planned to return to North Idaho. After five years of work and owning a home in Fall City near breathtaking, spiritual Snoqualmie Falls, they moved to a rental home on Whidbey Island on the water near the Strait of Juan de Fuca for two years of beach combing and to help satisfy Sandy's love of the sea and tides. Sandy worked at the Coupeville Art Center.
North Idaho had been discovered and became more expensive after they left, so they decided to move to the Flathead Valley in Montana. It was heaven on earth in those days. They had no plans to leave until it changed gradually. During their time there, they studied herbal medicine with herbalist, Tom Tracey, for at least twelve years. They were also employed as gardeners working at gardens of various types. It was a wonderful time with wonderful friendships that still exist. During that time, they were a part of many efforts to keep timber mills open with convoys all over the Northwest. Many gatherings appreciating veterans for their many sacrifices were fully supported — especially the large gatherings at Lake Mary Ronan. In 2018, they were looking for a new home. Sandy and Marty attended the 40th Anniversary
Celebration of The Heritage Museum in Libby. They loved the selfless people, all volunteers, who gave so much to their community! They wanted to be a part of it and contribute to Libby. Months later they bought their land and built their home. Before they finished it, Sandy began having some serious effects of what they found out was a genetic disorder inherited from her paternal grandmother. It has no cure or treatment. Sandy's neurologist told her “Do as much as you can as long as you can". Sandy certainly did that — amazing grit. With her effort and spirit, she extended her life by at least two more years.
Sandy was an amazing artist in many mediums. She was good at everything she tried - jewelry, watercolors, gourd art, alcohol ink — many others. Sandy was an incredible public servant helping anyone willing to help themselves. She was a friend to many.
Sandy and Marty want their property to serve future generations — especially with natural herbal healing and other healing modalities. There is much natural healing that Marty can teach to those eager to learn. Others can teach as well. That is a legacy they have both wanted to leave.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Marty; son Mark; grandsons Maxwell, Taylor and Derek; daughter-in-law, Kelly; brothers Vance Berry and Mike Berry; sister-in-law Linnea Godwin; brother-in-law Alan, and many dear friends who are really family to Sandy.
Sandy's ashes will be interred in the Memorial Garden on their property during a Celebration of Her Life, May 18 at 2:00 with family and friends in attendance. Gardens have always been a sanctuary for Sandy. This is her final one.

Orville Lee Thorn - November 15, 1937 - February 27, 2024

Departed: 02/27/2024 (Libby)
Obituary Preview: Orville Lee Thorn, 86, passed away peacefully of natural causes at the Shaw Mountain Hospital Facility in Boise, Idaho on Feb. 27, 2024.
Orville was born in Polson, Montana on Nov. 15, 1937, to Jenny (Pat) and Orville L. Thorn Sr.
In 1959 he married fellow Marine Lorraine Bishop of Stoughton, Massachusetts, the mother of his children Carol and Wayne.
He spent his early years in Libby, Montana where he attended Libby Public Schools. At the youthful age of 17, “Orv” joined the United States Marine Corps where he proudly served our nation for 20 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served three tours there and returned as a decorated and distinguished 1st Sgt. He honorably retired in 1975 and returned to his favorite place on earth, the Yaak River Valley.
Though he now had plenty of time to fish and hunt, he was not ready to be “retired” from serving his country and his community. He joined the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office staff as the Undersheriff to Ray Nixon and dedicated another 20 years of his commitment and expertise to serving his God, his beloved State of Montana, the people of Lincoln County, his family and many friends across the USA.
Orville was a Master of Libby #85 Masonic Lodge, a member of the Scottish Rite Shriners, a life-long member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Libby Elks Club, the NRA and a member of the Montana B.A.S.S. Association.
As engaged as he was in serving others, he did find “those peaceful moments of “self- reflection,” as he fished his favorite Yaak River and countless other bodies of water between the Canadian border and the Gulf of Mexico. His “fish” stories brought hours of entertainment for all those who were lucky enough to share in his life’s adventures. It goes without saying that the fish fry dinner at the end of a day on the river, was the “icing on the cake.” Often the evening ended with a “knuckle down” game of pinochle. With a grin on his face, he reminded everyone at the table that this “card time” was serious” business” and he was out to win!
His wife, Lorraine; his infant son, Russell, his sister, Carla Gardner; and his parents, Orville Thorn, Sr. and “Pat” Thorn Jeffries preceded him in death.
The families who will forever cherish the memories of a life well lived include his daughter Carol Snapp and her husband Larry (Nampa, Idaho) son, Wayne (Sydney, Montana), half-sister, JoDee Thorn, step brother, Frank Widic, step brother Mark Jeffries and his wife Cassie (Portland, Oregon), nephew Rick Gardner, his daughter Kayla Meyer and daughter Sari Ashbaugh (Portland, Oregon) grandchildren, David Gray (Houston, Texas), Gina Carter (Hartford, Connecticut), Melanie Kroshus and her husband Chris (Meridian, Idaho), Brodie Snapp (Mobile, Alabama), and great-grandchildren Jaxon, Dane, Lyla, Claire, Sidney and Madison.
It would be impossible to list all the people who delighted in Orv’s love and companionship over the years including his Wisconsin “Thorn” family, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends from across the United States and beyond.
A Celebration of Life service for Orville will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Christ Lutheran Church, 200 W. Larch St., Libby, Montana. Immediately following the service, military graveside services will be held at the City of Libby Cemetery.
At the completion of the committal service, please join the family for refreshments back at the church fellowship hall.
Arrangements are under the care of Schnackenberg Funeral Home of Libby, MT.  Online condolences and memories may be shared by visiting www.schnackenbergfh.com.

Norma Ruth Erickson - March 11, 1954 - February 26, 2024

Departed: 02/26/2024 (Libby)
Obituary Preview: Norma Erickson passed away February 26, 2024, at her home in Troy, Montana. She was born March 11, 1954, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, the daughter of John Cox and Rosalie (Green) Cox. In 2010 Norma started a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. SaneVax.org was Norma’s passion, her heart and soul went into it. It became the first international HPV vaccine information clearing house. She will be missed worldwide.
From Mario Lamo: “It is with deep sadness that I also receive the news of Norma’s passing. She was the first person I met in this fight against the Gardasil vaccine and her help for my country, Columbia, was immense. She participated in a radio program to which I invited her here in Columbia and we gave the first warning about the bad effects of this vaccine. Norma invited me to the Autism One conference, there we met, and she offered her knowledge, as well as that of multiple guests, victims, doctors, and activists who were in the same fight. Thanks to Norma and the articles we published in Sanevax in English and Spanish in Columbia, we achieved through a legal procedure that the vaccine was not mandatory in Columbia and vaccination was reduced from 85% to 15%. Her book, Journeys from Trust to Tragedy, along with Freda Birrell (from Scotland) and a collaboration of mine on Latin America, has served as an inspiration and raised awareness about the criminal HPV vaccine. I hope her website continues to work; we need it! I write a note in tribute to this great woman and fighter until the last moment for a just cause. She has touched many and many lives were saved with her help. To all of Norma’s friends and acquaintances a big hug, she and her fight will live forever in our hearts”.
Jennifer Otto wrote: “No doubt you deserve the most prestigious wings an angel can receive. You have been an epic warrior, blazing trails for others to follow, and you've fought diligently against a system that has sought to silence our sons and daughters in the most heinous of ways. Thank you for the dedication, heart, loyalty, time, and energy that you poured into your years of service”. From Shannon Powers: “For those who never had the pleasure of knowing such a passionate and most intelligent woman, you were cheated! I am so blessed and thankful to have shared many years listening and sharing so much of our lives with one another. Norma will leave a legacy for sure. She was the founder and powerhouse behind a magnificent organization that I am proud to be a part of. Sanevax.org was her passion and speaking the truth to millions all over the world. She helped thousands upon thousands of families by helping them understand the truth to what was happening to their children! She fought so effortlessly for each and every one of us! She not only gave facts to help us understand, but she also gave LOVE, compassion and encouragement that tomorrow would be a better day! At this time no arrangements have been made. Loved ones are trying to find the right way for those who would be willing to contribute to her organization to keep it alive. More information will follow shortly. In the meantime, give thanks and LOVE to a beautiful woman who admired all the injured for being BRAVE enough to speak their TRUTH!”
Norma leaves behind two sons and one daughter, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral or memorial service. They also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the person's passing.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, and other relevant details.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or online obituary platforms may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and detail required. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to write a well-crafted obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, you can write your own obituary in advance. This is often referred to as a "self-written" or "pre-written" obituary. Some people choose to do this to ensure that their life story is told accurately and in their own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform chosen. Newspaper obituaries can range from $50 to $1,000 or more, while online obituary platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help others remember the person.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration for which an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some websites may keep the obituary online indefinitely, while others may remove it after a certain period of time.

Can I edit an obituary after it has been published?

In some cases, it may be possible to make minor corrections or edits to an obituary after it has been published. However, significant changes may not be allowed due to space or logistical constraints.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer to keep the obituary private, you can opt for a private or password-protected online obituary. This allows you to share the information with select individuals while maintaining privacy.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?
