Dorothy A. Lane - July 12, 1936 - February 21, 2024

Departed: 02/21/2024 (Jackson)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy Ann Lane (nee Zajac), soared to the heavens for an amazing family reunion on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at the age of 87.
Dorothy, the youngest of seven, was born in Wausaukee, Wisconsin, to Michael and Sally (Broz) Zajac, Polish immigrants who came to the United States through Ellis Island.
Dorothy graduated from Wausaukee High School in 1954 and furthered her education by graduating from Mercy School of Nursing of Detroit in 1959 where she earned her designation as a Registered Nurse. After moving to West Bend in 1968, she worked at the Hustisford Hospital. In 1970, she began her 30+ year career at St. Joseph’s Community Hospital in West Bend.
Working full time and being a divorced, single mother, Dorothy rose to the challenge and successfully maintained a loving home life. Although she put in long hours, she unselfishly found the energy to arrange family activities to do during her off-time. She was dedicated to making sure her aging parents were well taken care of, and even had them live with her for periods of time.
Dorothy was a member of St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for many years and later a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church.
Dorothy had a passion for helping others. She volunteered for ten years at St. Ben’s meal program in Milwaukee where she made meaningful friendships. Her volunteer work with the St. Vincent DePaul Society included going on home visits to provide aid and positivity on those calls.
The Samaritan Health Care Center held a special place in Dorothy’s heart. She volunteered there for many years, especially in assisting residents to weekly Mass. When the time came for Dorothy’s sister Marian (and Dorothy herself) to transition to assisted living, The Fields at Samaritan was the only choice. Dorothy and Marian shared 1.5 years living next door to each other until Marian passed away. Dorothy stayed at The Samaritan until September, 2023. When she required additional care, the difficult decision was made to move her to The Waterford of West Bend.
The last several years of Dorothy’s life left her unable to speak (although she understood everything being said to her), and arthritis left her unable to write. Despite this tremendous challenge, she maintained her cheerful disposition and was still her loving, smiling self. She was quick to offer a hand squeeze, a tap on her heart with her hand, or a hug as her love language.
Survivors include her beloved children Ted (Veronica) Lane of Orange Park, Florida, and Teri Lane of Jackson, very dear relatives, and wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by her cherished parents, four brothers – Walter, Joseph, John, Martin and her two sisters - Helen and Marian Zajac.
Special thanks to the exceptional staff at The Fields at Samaritan, the caring staff at The Waterford in West Bend, and Allay Home and Hospice for the outstanding end-of-life support provided. You all hold a special place in our hearts.
Visitation will be held at Schmidt Funeral Home, N168W20135 Main Street, Jackson, Wisconsin, on Friday, March 15, 2024, from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. With a 1:00 p.m. funeral service officiated by Father Howard Haase at the same location. A reception will follow at the Jackson Area Community Center, N165W20330 Hickory Lane, Jackson.

Why are obituaries important?
