Kathleen Johnson - April 21, 1940 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Akron)
Obituary Preview: Kathleen “Kitty” Johnson (Kelly) passed away peacefully with family by her side on April 15th in Akron, Ohio, at the age of 83.
Preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Wendell (“Del”), parents Clare M. and Altha E. Kelly of Cleveland, Ohio, and brother Edward of Cleveland, Ohio, Kitty is survived by children Eric, Kurt (Jennifer), and Kelly; grandchildren Aubrey and Mason; and many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Kitty was born on April 21, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio, where she lived the first 29 years of her life before moving to Akron. After graduating from Lakewood High School in 1958, Kitty proudly earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the college of Wooster. Soon thereafter, she received her Master of Art in Theater from Kent State University.
Kitty’s education led her to accept a position at Columbia High School near Strongsville, teaching English. During that time, she attended Lakewood Presbyterian Church and met Wendell (“Del”) Johnson at a dance. The couple wed August 22,1964, and was blessed with three children who remain proud to call them their parents. They moved to Akron in 1969 so Del could begin teaching mathematics at The University of Akron Community and Technical College. Kitty also accepted a position at the university, teaching English, Grammar, and related subjects.
Choosing to devote more time to raising their three young children, Kitty took a break from the University of Akron before re-entering the workforce and taking a position with the accounting firm of MacGregor & MacGregor. She then took the step that would begin her second career, accepting a temporary assignment at the J.M. Smucker Company as an administrative assistant. By the time she retired from Smucker’s in 2002, Kitty was the Manager for International Customer Service for the entire company.
She was active throughout her life in the community, supporting the sports and other activities of her children, organizing and attending countless events with “the ‘hood,” volunteering at The Wilderness Center in Wilmot, and serving as a devoted member of the Firestone Park Presbyterian Church.  In 2022, Kitty moved from the home enjoyed by her family for 53 years and took up new residence at Vitalia Active Adult Community in Copley, where she instantly (but unsurprisingly) established even more wonderful friendships. Her reputation among family and friends was that of a remarkably kind and caring lady, which she demonstrated most strongly in her role as a loving “grandma” to her grandchildren, Aubrey and Mason.
Kitty will be fondly remembered for a quick and easy smile and a longtime devotion to “her” birds, who likely sorely miss their regular feedings (as do the squirrels, but that’s another issue). She excitedly celebrated the long-awaited championship won by her Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and maintained an unwavering devotion to the Cleveland Browns and Guardians (Indians), despite decades of championship futility. Friends may gather at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, at Firestone Park Presbyterian Church, 275 S. Firestone Blvd., Akron, OH, 44301, before the memorial celebration of Kitty’s life at 11:30, Pastor Francie Fischer, officiating.  A short luncheon reception will follow at 12:30 at Allenside Presbyterian Church, 410 Rexford St., Akron, OH, 44314 prior to the burial at Foxfield Preserve in Wilmot, OH. For those unable to attend in person, there will be a video broadcast of the service on Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5118335841?pwd=Z3VFQktHYUlNa1RoTEhGU2p2WTErdz09

Donald J Scott - October 15, 1954 - February 04, 2024

Departed: 02/04/2024 (Akron)
Obituary Preview: Donald J. Scott passed away suddenly at home on February 4, 2024.  He was born October 15,1954 to Mildred (Keefer) Scott and Donald Scott at Akron City Hospital.
Don knew who he was. He was a man of few words unless he had something to add to the conversation. He graduated from North High School where he met his lifetime close friends Pat, Joe and Mike. Once he told his wife that he and his buddies attempted to steal a chair from a motel!  The police came and he was released to his mom’s custody. A chair?! A quiet guy but not above a little mischief.
He read widely throughout his life. He was an armchair (recliner, really) Jeopardy! champion.  How he tackled categories such as Philosophers, 18th Century Composers and Greek mythology no one knows. His answer to his wife was usually, “Dear I don’t know where I learned this fact. I just know.”  He always said this with a slight grin and fake modesty. That was Don. Besides reading he was a devoted fan of Blues music and legendary guitarist Jeff Beck. He had an encyclopedic mind for the music. Once at a Friday Night TGIF outside in Cuyahoga Falls, Don answered the DJ’s question to win a prize. The DJ said to Don: wow - you are a rock n’ roll librarian!
He met his wife Virginia at a cast party held at fellow acting student/now sister-in-law Nancy’s off campus rental house. They met “across a crowded room” and married three years and 4 days on April 28, 1990.
Don and Virginia did not share many of the common interests such as the liking the same movies, music, TV shows and the like. But they shared the same value system of trust, faith in each other and the future, and belief in God. They were a team.
Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his Aunt Fern and Uncle Edwin, cousins Rosemary Evelsizer and Margaret Dodge, his nephew Steve Zook, mother-in-law Ann Sheil, sister-in-law Luanne Sheil Dunlop (Bob), friend Patrick McKeivier, and family cats, Murphy and Matilda.
He is survived by his loving wife Virginia, devoted sister Nancy Jones, caring brother Charles Zook (Sunnie), nephew Chris Zook (Pelin Batur) and children Bora, Azra and Ajda; niece Teresa (Todd) Martter and children Alyssa and Keira. He is also survived by special friends Joe Guistino (Gina) and Mike Scarpetti (Paula), and many other good neighbors and friends. Finally, he is also survived by Agent Cooper, guardian cat of Verde Avenue.
A funeral Mass will be held on April 4, 2024 at 11 am at St. Sebastian’s Church, 476 Mull Ave, Akron OH 44320. Visitation is 10 am in church vestibule until Mass. Luncheon follows at Swisler Hall.
Donations may be made in Don’s name to www.freespeech.org or to the charity of your choice.

Mitzie H Hodgkinson - April 17, 1935 - January 23, 2024

Departed: 01/23/2024 (Akron)
Obituary Preview: Mitzie Hodgkinson went home to be with the Lord, January 23, 2024.
Mitzi’s family was the most important thing in her life and she was always encouraging to them. Her advice to her sons when they became parents was to not worry that your children may seem to not always listen to you; but worry that they are always watching you. She taught us that the best holiday gift of all is the presence of a happy family all wrapped up with one another. She always made our home the warmest and most attractive place on earth. These lessons will never be forgotten.
Dementia may have robbed her of her memories, but it never diminished her feisty nature or her smile. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Private services will be held at a later date.

Betty was an avid traveler and the family enjoyed summer vacations each year to the east coast beaches, Florida, Texas, and destinations in between.  After becoming empty-nesters, Betty and Frank continued to travel and expanded their horizons to Hawaii, Alaska, and Europe.  After Frank’s retirement in 1994, he and Betty would spend months in Florida escaping Ohio winters until the thaw of spring.
In addition to traveling, Betty enjoyed sewing, crafting, crocheting, and reading, especially her Bible and Christian novels.  Betty was a devout follower of Christ and attended the Kenmore Church of Christ, now Compass Christian Church, her entire life.  She served in multiple capacities at her home congregation including deaconess, Vacation Bible School teacher, substitute pianist and substitute secretary, and as a member of the church’s missions committee.  In this role, she also served alongside Frank as state-side support for Christian missionaries who served in Zambia and Malawi. When the church doors were open, Betty was there as long as her health permitted.
One of Betty’s God-given gifts was her cooking and baking talent - she made beautiful, elaborately decorated birthday cakes to celebrate loved ones.  She served delicious, well-prepared meals, and constantly varied the menu.  She excelled at making deviled eggs, one of her holiday specialties.  Most recently she made one of her favorite dishes, corn pudding, for Thanksgiving despite the limitations of her illness.  Her recipes will be treasured by generations to come. She was also proud to have received recognition from the City of Akron for their neighborhood Beautification Watch Award for her tidy Cape Cod-style home in the Kenmore community.
Betty leaves behind her son, Tim (Kelly) Morber, grandchildren Mary “Kayla,” Hannah, Daniel, and Lily; daughter Tina (Tim) Wilt, grandchildren Teleri and Blaidd; nieces and nephews Vince (Jamie) Morber, Maria (Ron) Weinberg, Dominic (Monika) Morber, Julie (Jason) Goshe, Rick Suliks, Amy (Jose) Garcia, Andy Hause, Alan Hause, Adam Hause, many grandnieces and grandnephews; sister-in-law Gerry Hause, and many cousins. In addition to being preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Betty was also preceded in death by sister Eileen (Hause) Suliks, brother William “Bill” Hause, and niece Debbie (Suliks) Garrett.
The family would like to thank Summa Hospital Hospice, Summa Community Hospice, and Home Helpers Home Care for their excellent attention to and care for Betty during her illness.
