Vernon LeRoy Larson - May 28, 1953 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Osseo)
Obituary Preview: Vernon “Vern” LeRoy Larson, 70, of Osseo, Wisconsin, passed unexpectedly on April 10th, 2024.
Vern was born to Robert and Joyce (Schwoch) Larson on May 28th, 1953, in Mondovi, Wisconsin, where he grew up with his four siblings: Betty, Steve, Jolene, and Becky. Vern grew up in rural Mondovi where he was fortunate to attend the country school in Naples, Wisconsin, through the 8th grade. He then spent a year in Mondovi before later moving to Osseo in 1968. He then graduated with the class of ’71 from Osseo High School. He spent a lot of his summers in Osseo with his grandma Mabel Schwoch, who he would later live with.
In 1973 he married Linda Stensen, and they had a beautiful daughter, Serena, who has grown into a wonderful young woman. They later separated in 1976. On July 16, 1977, Vern married Becky Monson. Together they raised their two sons, Jerad and Brent, who are now men like their dad. Throughout the years, we have grown into this wonderful, blended family on all sides. In addition to being an amazing father, many young people in the community saw him as a father figure and a role model.
Starting at 16, Vern spent much of his time working on the farm with his uncles, aunts, and cousins. After graduation, he got a farm deferment and helped his aunt and uncle Bob and Marcia Schwoch, where he helped take a 1-herd, 100-acre farm into a 2-herd, 600-acre farm. After Bob and Marcia died in 1995, Vern went to milk cows for Paul and Louise Lauterbach until they sold their farm in 1998, at which point he switched careers and began working for Global Finishing Solutions (formerly JBI). Although he held several positions at Global Finishing Solutions, his passion was working as a plasma table operator.
How do you describe Vern? He was a wonderful husband, father, friend, and confidante. He was a man of strong faith with a personal relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and wasn’t afraid to show it. He would share it with anyone who asked and listen to anyone who wanted to talk. He was a valued member of the Osseo Evangelical Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday school for over ten years. He sang with the praise team and choir, served on the council, and communion, and yes, he was even a minister, officiating five weddings. Vern loved life! He was a talented writer and poet, as well as a skilled metal worker; he often used his talents to make beautiful Christian metal art. Vern loved to dance and listen to music, even composing and singing some original worship songs. He was an all-around people person, and as many have said, “to know him was to love him”. He will be greatly missed.
Vern is survived by his devoted wife, Becky Larson, three children, Serena Larson, Jerad (Jessica Bertrand) Larson, and Brent (Tasha) Larson; siblings Betty Larson of Eau Claire, Steve (LaZette) Larson of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Jolene (Miles) Moyer. He is also survived by his aunt Maxine (Paul Badker), his nieces and nephews, cousins, and many, many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Joyce, sister Becky Larson, niece Jessica Moyer, grandparents, and the rest of his uncles and aunts.
Funeral services for Vern will be held on Saturday, April 20th at the Osseo Evangelical Lutheran Church in Osseo, Wisconsin. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 2:45 p.m., followed by funeral services at 3:00 p.m. Pastor David Hoadley to officiate. The service will be live-streamed. Bernard Ivory Johnson - April 12, 1928 - November 27, 2023

Departed: 11/27/2023 (Osseo)
Obituary Preview: Bernard I. Johnson, 95, passed away on November 27, 2023. To know Bernard was to love Bernard, as he loved everyone he met and had a genuine interest in all people.
Bernie was born on April 12, 1928, to Ole and Ragna (Melby) Johnson in Northfield, WI. Following his mother’s death, Ole married Cora Hanson, and Bernie, his brother Thomas and sister Ruby (Marvin) Hanson were raised on their farm in May Coulee. It was here that Bernard learned the value of hard work and dedication to family and community.
Following graduation from Hixton High School, Bernard’s service in the United States Army took him to Korea and Japan in 1947-1948. Upon honorable discharge from the army, Bernard was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan.
Bernard received a teaching degree from UW-River Falls and his Master’s Degree from Winona State University. He taught two years in Blair, WI, and then became a teacher, a principal and AV Director in the Cochrane-Fountain City School District, where he and Marianne were avid supporters of the C-FC Pirates, working many of the events at the clock and scorer’s table.
Bernard married Marianne Mickelson on June 28, 1950, and they raised two children Tom (TJ) Brian and Anna Marie in their home in Fountain City, WI. Besides teaching, Bernard held many jobs throughout his life. From sexing chickens, working in a meat-packing plant, working for the Corps of Engineers, and driving cement trucks and bulldozers, Bernard always had a job and projects. He helped build and run the rootbeer stand in Fountain City. He and Marianne worked as a team photographing many weddings. If he wasn’t working for pay, he and Donnie or he and Al would find some project to keep them busy.
Bernard and Marianne loved to spend time at Bernie’s Hideout built in May Coulee, offering Bernie beautiful hunting land, wood splitting opportunities, and a place for them to host friends and family for coffee, card playing and 4-wheel rides.
Wherever Bernie lived, worked and played, he built community. He loved to attend the York Rodeo, the Hixton 4th of July celebration, his Hixton all-school reunion, a coffee date, a church service, especially at Central Lutheran in Winona where he was a member for many years, any event where there were friends, family and new people to meet. He loved to play cards. The joke was that Bernard saw this as a social opportunity, and games would often take much longer than they should have because there were stories to tell, questions to ask, or Bernard just didn’t want the fun to end. Bernard and Marianne loved to travel. Besides the many travels around the United States, highlights were traveling with friends Don and Twila Jacobson to Norway to visit relatives and on a European tour that included fun at the HofBrauHaus in Munich where he may have been asked to get down off the table, and a solemn visit to his brother Tom’s grave site at the American Cemetery in Epinal, France. Bernard and Marianne traveled to and worked many America Sings! events, helping spread awareness of homelessness among children. Bernard also traveled to Europe with Steve Jacobson and to Peru with good friends Lester Vold and Kerry and Mona Jacobson. Bernard was always willing to go! Bernard never took himself too seriously. His giggle, his smirk, his sense of humor, his ease of laughter, his ability to find the good in all people and his willingness to help anyone who needed a hand, a dollar or an ear will all be remembered by those who knew him well and those he just met. Bernie, with a spring in this step and in a constant hustle, was a man of many talents, a dabbler, a lifelong learner and was interested in any new subject that came his way. He was hard to keep up with!
Bernie is survived by his son Thomas (Beth) Johnson, Anna Marie (Cary) Whetstone, grandson Chance Johnson, and great-granddaughter, Ava Marie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marianne, his brother Thomas, sister Ruby, brother-in-law Marvin Hanson, grandsons Paul Hurt, Mitchell Gomber, Hunter Johnson, and many family and friends. Bernard’s motto was “Det er godt og morsomt å leve!" It is good and fun to live! He taught us well! A memorial service will be held for Bernard at Upper Pigeon Creek Church, Northfield, WI, on Monday, December 11 at 11:00. Interment will be at Upper Pigeon Creek Cemetery. A celebration of life will follow at the Osseo Golf Course. Please join friends and family in celebrating a life well lived!

Elden Joseph Rongstad - April 08, 1928 - October 02, 2023

Departed: 10/02/2023 (Osseo)
Obituary Preview: Elden Joseph Rongstad, 95 of Osseo, died October 2, 2023 at the Pigeon Falls Health Care Center.
Elden was born April 8, 1928 on his family farm to Odin and Hilda (Vold) Rongstad in the Town of Hale, Osseo, Wisconsin where he lived for the next 60 years. Elden was baptized and confirmed at Elk Creek Lutheran Church where he was a lifelong member.
Norwegian was his first language. Older brother Orlin was learning English for school and passed it along to Elden. Some technology arrived in North Branch a little later; Elden remembered the years they received electricity, cars, tractors, phones.
Elden met Virginia Baskin on a blind date at Fournier's Ballroom in Eau Claire. That date would last for over 64 years, even though she didn't polka. On January 29, 1955 they were married in Elmwood, WI. They lived and farmed in North Branch, raising 3 children: Bonnie, Scott and Ross. Having grown up on that farm it was hard to pull anything over on dad. Having fun was his second nature. He never passed up an opportunity to tease someone whether he knew them or not, April 1st was his favorite holiday. You never knew what the joke would be that year.
After Elden sold the dairy part of his farm he decided to try a new occupation. He went back to school at age 60 and received his certification for over the road, long haul trucking, a job he loved until his retirement in 2010. Still wanting to keep busy, he and Virginia delivered newspapers in Osseo. Elden had his mornings busy and at noon would help deliver meals on wheels. He always wanted to help.
After a fall in 2018 Elden entered Pigeon Falls Health Care Center where he stayed until his death. When Virginia was ill, they were able to share a room for the short time before her death. We all knew not to disturb dad in the afternoon because he was busy with some activity. His favorite was bingo. After all, he had to feed his Bingo Piggy bank. There always seemed to be a twinkle in his eye and a grin on his face. Our thanks to the staff for making his stay there so enjoyable.
He truly believed and practiced “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.
Elden is survived by his three children: Bonnie (Gary Plummer), Scott (Linda) and Ross (Melisa); Grandchildren Brittany Johnson, Tricia (Tim) Wells, Patrick (Jen) Rongstad, Melissa, Rongstad, Jarvis Rongstad, Amber Rongstad and Emily (Brady) Perkovich; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandson. He is further survived by many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; and brother, Orlin (Vivian).
Funeral services to be held at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osseo on Monday, Oct 23 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. He will be laid to rest at the Elk Creek Cemetery.
