James Leon Shuler - August 12, 1944 - April 05, 2022

Departed: 04/05/2022 (Schertz)
Obituary Preview: James Leon Shuler, died on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at the age of 77. His family called him Jimmy, others called him Coach or Jim and those who had his heart called him Pa or Crypa.
Jim faced many health problems related to his lungs and passed away at home, two days after an emergency appendectomy. Ironically all his pre-op blood work and tests, showed he was healthier than he had been over the last few years. He was proud of the fitness level he achieved while battling COPD. It was important for him to work hard so that he could enjoy more time with his grandchildren, family and perhaps even some golf.
Jim was born at a healthy weight of almost 11 pounds to Lillian and William Shuler in San Antonio.  The second of six siblings, Jim grew up in a busy household of four boys and twin sisters. He started school not knowing how to read or write but by the end of the year he was acting as a mentor to others struggling in the class. This experience foreshadowed his time as a coach and educator. Even as a child, Jim was driven, determined and did not shy away from hard work.  He excelled as a well-rounded athlete and played organized baseball and a lot of basketball. His dad put a goal in their yard where he worked to perfect his shot to the point that area had no grass left. As a teen, he would get home in the evening and shoot at least 1,000 shots before bed.  He went on to graduate from Sam Houston High School where he played basketball and holds the school record for the most points scored in a game. Jim spent his freshman year of college at Trinity University. That summer Coach Frost arranged for Jim to be a camp counselor at Camp Ridgecrest in North Carolina. This experience as a counselor was very influential and had a major impact on his future. Jim’s talents in basketball as a tall, quick, left-handed player with a mean jump shot were recognized. Carson Newman College recruited him to their team where he received his bachelor’s degree. During his college years Jim received many awards and honors. He was elected to represent the student body as Mr. Carson Newman and was also named as an All-American in 1966. Later in 2013, Jim was included on Carson Newman’s Team of the Century. He later earned his master’s degree from Our Lady of the Lake.
After college, Jim was hired at Jefferson High School as a biology teacher and to coach JV football and basketball. As a young Head Basketball Coach, Jim took their team to the state tournament. Shortly thereafter he started his career at Texas Lutheran University as the head basketball coach and married Linda. They soon became a family of four with Mark (from a previous marriage) and having a daughter, Andrea.  He then went on to coach at Hardin Simmons where he had another son named, Tim. He later moved to Judson High School, taking another team to the state quarter finals. In 1984, he returned to Texas Lutheran where he stayed until he retired from coaching with a career of more than 500 wins, 200 more wins than any other TLU head basketball coach. Here he was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Award and earned a spot in the Athletic Hall of Fame. The Texas Lutheran Basketball Court is now named in his honor. Jim coached many kids throughout the years and was very proud of them.  It was important for Coach to see kids graduate and become well rounded both personally and professionally. His considered his players were an extension of the family. Their losses were his losses, and their wins were celebrated.
Jim is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda; his son Mark; their daughter Andrea Coats and her husband, Steven and their daughters, Stevie and Lauren; their son Tim Shuler and his wife Donna and their children Dalton, Julianna, Hazel and Flynn; 3 brothers, Allen (Donna), Larry (Laura), and Gary (Carol), and two sisters, Sheila and (John) Peden and Sharla.
Jim had many interests and accomplishments throughout his life. He loved fishing with his dad and brothers. Golf was a constant in his life and was a member Northcliffe Country Club which provided many memorable summers for the entire family golfing and swimming. Jim was always an avid golfer and enjoyed playing out in Devine with his brothers. He also started several businesses buying and selling baseball cards and antiques.
In his later years, Jim’s interests shifted to his grandchildren and helping to shape and influence their lives. He fought for his health to see them grow up and wanted to hang around long enough to be remembered. From “shake, shake, break” or “putting you on the roof” to a beach or theme park adventure, Jim was trying to create memories with and for his family.
A Visitation will be held from 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at Triumphant Lutheran Church (21315 Bat Cave Rd. Garden Ridge, TX, 78266) with the Funeral Service beginning at 11:00 AM. The Interment will be held at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Marion (100 W. Wetz Rd.) following the service.

Sarah Ione Sadler - November 02, 1938 - April 03, 2022

Departed: 04/03/2022 (Schertz)
Obituary Preview: In loving memory of Sarah Ione Poteet Sadler, 83, of Schertz, Texas who passed away on April 3, 2022.
Sarah was born on November 2, 1938 in her family’s home in Madisonville, Texas. She was the youngest of six children born to Joseph Dean and Sarah Bessie Seay Poteet. By the age of 11, Sarah’s parents had passed away and her primary guardianship was assumed by her eldest sister and brother in law, Bernice and Cecil Windsor. Sarah then moved to Yoakum, Texas where she lived with Bernice and Cecil and their two sons, Cecil Jr and Stephen where she thrived under the loving care of her entire family.
Sarah graduated from Yoakum High School in 1956 and enrolled at Tulane University and the Mather School of Nursing at Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. There she found nursing to be the calling of her life. Upon completing her nursing board exams in 1959, Sarah graduated as a Registered Nurse and moved to Pasadena Texas to begin work at Pasadena General Hospital.
In 1961, Sarah was introduced to David Sadler at Pasadena General Emergency by a family friend, Mrs. Bruce, RN. With her beautiful red hair, great smile and sharp wit, Sarah made a lasting impression on David. After a year of dating, Sarah and David were married by Dr. L.D. Morgan on April 14, 1962 at the First Baptist Church. Sarah and David went on to have two daughters, Penny Lynn in 1964 and Amy Beth in 1970. As a stay at home mom, Sarah focused her attention on her young family, volunteer work, crocheting, craft painting and entertaining family and friends.
When David accepted a laboratory position at Hess Oil in the US Virgin Islands, Sarah and David moved the family to the island of St. Croix. For the next four years, Sarah focused on being a home maker, raising her girls, and supporting her husband’s career. One of Sarah’s favorite weekend activities was hunting for sea shells in the shallow grassy waters of the eastern shore. She also made time to be a Girl Scout Leader and Swim Team Booster. Sarah enjoyed traveling with David to Aruba and hosting her family when they vacationed on St. Croix.
As 1976 came to a close, David accepted a new position as the chief chemist at Champlin Refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. Sarah and David built a house in nearby Portland and Sarah resumed her nursing career in the Emergency Room at Taft Hospital. Sarah went on to serve as a nursing educator at Beeville Community College and a Consultant to a number of Long-Term Nursing Facilities throughout the South Texas Area. In 1984, Sarah’s administrative skills coupled with her high standards of nursing excellence were recognized when she was hired to be the founding Director of Nursing at Trinity Towers in Corpus Christi, Texas.
With their daughters grown, Sarah and David accepted positions at Saudi Aramco in 1989 and began a ten-year adventure in the middle east. As an Aramco nurse, Sarah worked in a medical clinic that handled over 700 patients per day. For Sarah, working as a clinical nurse was a welcomed return to the one on one patient care that she dearly loved. Language was never a barrier for Sarah because she learned enough Arabic to communicate and personally connect with her patients. During their time in Saudi, the Gulf War erupted, and Sarah and David opened their home and hearts to members of the 82nd Airborne. The soldiers came for R&R and holiday celebrations but left as family. As Sarah and David wound down their Saudi adventure, they took the opportunity to travel. Sarah’s favorite destinations included the tulip fields of Holland, Great Blue Mosque in Turkey, Parthenon in Greece and the Great Wall in China.
In 1999, Sarah and David retired from Aramco and moved back to Pasadena, Texas. While Sarah loved living much closer to her family and dear friends, she missed nursing. In her heart, she never really retired. Her passion for nursing remained central to her identity and she maintained her nursing license well into her retirement years. Sarah would have continued serving her profession if not for the physical limitations placed on her by peripheral neuropathy.
Sarah and David made one last move to San Antonio, Texas in 2016 to be closer to their daughter Amy. Sarah spent time keeping up with her girls, family and dear friends, enjoying back scratches and hugs, dancing with David to any music with a good beat, snuggling with her dachshunds, reading cookbooks, enjoying a favorite country meal like fresh-hulled cream peas and cornbread. Sarah concluded every day by offering up prayers for her family, friends and country.
While Sarah faced a series of health challenges during the later years of her life, she persevered and kept on fighting. She repeatedly defied the odds and overcame each challenge with grace, feistiness and determination. If you were to ask Sarah where she found her strength, she would say through her faith and trust in God’s plan for her life. Sarah served God through her compassion and service to others. When you spoke with Sarah, you knew that you were the most important thing in her life at that moment. In her final years, the love, caring and kindness that Sarah showed her patients, friends and family came back to her in kind. She was blessed by the many hands that comforted her, aided her healing, and helped her to recover over and over again.
Sarah is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, David Allen Sadler, her daughters Penny Lynn Sadler and Amy Beth Sadler, her nephew-brothers Cecil Windsor Jr. and Stephen Windsor, and her many cherished nephews and nieces, along with their families.
Sarah is preceded in death by her parents Joseph Dean and Sarah Bessie Poteet, siblings (spouses) Angie Maudean Poteet, Minnie Bernice Windsor (Cecil Windsor), Joseph Dean Poteet II (Martha Poteet), Cara Elizabeth Daniel (John Parker Daniel), June Louise Wilcox Terry (George Wilcox, Oval Terry Sr.) and her nephew Morris Dean Poteet.
A Memorial Service will be held on June 18, 2022 at 1PM at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel in Schertz, Texas. All are welcomed. Memorial donations can be made in honor of Sarah Sadler to a nursing school of your choice.

Tessa Louise Stiner - November 10, 2021 - March 26, 2022

Departed: 03/26/2022 (Schertz)
Obituary Preview: Tessa Louise Stiner was born on November 10th, 2021.  Tessa Louise was named after two of her great grandmothers: Thelma Stiner and Mary Louise Hunter, in hopes that she would carry their legacy of love and generosity.  Her arrival was difficult and doctors advised her parents that she would probably never wake up from a coma.  Every moment of her life was a miracle and a testament to God’s grace: her first hiccups, when she wrapped her little hand around her parents’ fingers, when she opened her eyes, nothing was taken for granted, everything was celebrated.
Tessa came home on December 20th, 2021 and was immediately wrapped in the love of her siblings who had waited so long to meet her.  Tessa grew stronger and reached inch-stones and milestones that were beyond what had been predicted for her.  She loved to be held and her family took every opportunity to snuggle her.  Tessa enjoyed being outside while her brother and sister played.  She loved listening to stories and songs, she thrived in therapy under the gentle hands of her therapists.  Tessa died on March 26th, 2022 wrapped in the loving embrace of her parents.
In her short life, Tessa connected people all around the world, people of different faiths and no faith at all, in love and support; for the outpouring of kindness that surrounded her short life her parents will always be thankful.  Tessa is survived by her parents, Justin and Erika, her siblings, Blaine and Elise, grandparents Timothy and Mandy Barker and Brian and Linnea Dunn, and aunts, D’Ann Barker and Sarah Dunn, great grandparents, extended family, and a community who loved her dearly.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Tessa’s life on Saturday, April 16th at 9:30am at University Presbyterian Church, 300 Bushnell Ave. San Antonio, TX.  If you cannot join us in person, the service will be live streamed from University Presbyterian Church’s YouTube channel.
A memorial fund has been set up in Tessa’s honor at University Presbyterian Church.  You can donate at UPC’s website https://upcsa.org/giving/ and put Tessa’s name in the memo.
