Departed: 01/25/2024 (Quincy)
Obituary Preview: Irvin Kent Howe (January 11, 1945-January 25, 2024) was born to Ellen Alberdina Galloway Howe and Lawrence James Howe in Ontario, Oregon. He spent his first years in Ontario with his parents and older sister, Vivian Nadene Howe. Later on, his younger sister, Rita Howe, joined the family. When Irvin was four years old, he contracted polio, so he was taken to Boise, Idaho, and put into an iron lung. He also spent time at Shriner’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon, undergoing surgery to repair his leg. As a child, he mainly lived in Ontario and Madras, Oregon, as well as Eltopia and Blythe, Washington.
He graduated from Othello High School in 1963, attended an electronics school in Salt Lake City, and then completed a mechanic certificate at Big Bend Community College. He married Camille Christensen in the Logan Utah Temple on July 10, 1967. They had four children, Kimberly Michelle, Tamara Ann, Deborah Leanne, and Devin Scott.
He worked for Tilly Equipment in Wenatchee for a year, for Clerf Equipment in George for 6 years, and for Hammond Farms for 34 years, as a mechanic and shop foreman. He loved his work and the many friends he made around Quincy Valley and beyond. He was well known for being able to fix or build just about anything.
Irvin led a life of charity—helping many people repair their cars and trucks, fixing air conditioning units and tractors, and often driving many miles to assist those he didn’t even know. He liked to kid around and always had a smile and friendly word.
He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked in the church in many capacities. He was elders quorum president, Young Men president, a bishopric member, and a member of the choir. He also worked in the stake Young Men presidency.
Irvin spent many years mentoring young men in the Boy Scouts of America, and he ultimately was given the Silver Beaver Award, a distinguished service award within the Boy Scouts. For many years, he was the Advancement Chairman for the Columbia Basin District, helping young men achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Many boys in the community were mentored by him throughout the years. Some of his favorite outings that formed lasting bonds were the yearly horse pack trips that he helped organize and lead for Quincy’s Boy Scout Troop 48. The mountains, horses, boys, and the friendships made were among his most treasured memories.
Irvin also enjoyed driving down the Oregon Coast, exploring the backroads of eastern Washington, and touring Yellowstone. He loved the scenery and sharing those times with his grandkids.

Gary Duckworth - April 03, 1943 - January 20, 2024

Departed: 01/20/2024 (Quincy)
Obituary Preview: Gary Michael Duckworth was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 3, 1943 and sprinted into the arms of Jesus on January 20, 2024 at the age of 80 in Moses Lake, Washington.
Born under a different name, Gary started his journey under a new name in December of 1945 when he was adopted by Clyde and Genevieve Duckworth and moved to California, where he grew up.
Gary’s early to mid-life was full of adventure, and quite often misadventure, if we are being honest. His theme song would have been ‘Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places’. You see, Gary was literally seeking a lasting love, in all the wrong places. Several marriages did bless him with three children though, Christi, Karen and Gary Jr, but ultimately, they all failed.
It was not until he met Jesus and found the lasting love he had been so desperately looking for, that Gary’s life truly changed. He went from being homeless and living out of his car to getting a college degree and marrying Linda, his wife of 28 years. He also got three bonus children out of the deal.
One of the most precious things about Gary is that he truly saw and loved those that society as a whole would often just throw away. It was not unusual for him to give every last penny at his disposal and then some to help those in need. Even in his later years when he was not able to get out and about, there were numerous charities that knew that they could count on him for continued support.
A year ago, a major change in his health prompted him to have to make the life altering move into a nursing home. Rather than wallow in his new circumstances, Gary made the choice to continue being a light to those who needed Jesus. He saw those who may have not been seen by others and loved on those who needed it, both residents and staff. Affectionately, he was known as the Candyman. One of his love languages was giving, and he knew that most people enjoyed candy. It was not an uncommon sight to see him wheeling around giving out candy, but everyone who knew him knew that if they came into his room there would be guaranteed candy and some version of “Jesus loves you and so do I”.
As the news of Gary’s passing was shared to many people in many different states, there were an abundance of stories of how he made a difference in so many peoples’ lives over the years. Not just the unseen, but people from all walks of life and circumstances. It was quite staggering and truly humbling. This is a man who was well loved, and didn’t even know it. A man who helped change lives, and was not aware. Someone who could not comprehend that he was worthy of anyone seeing him. He saw himself as just a man that fell head over heels in love with Jesus and was not afraid to share that fact with anyone and everyone. Gary is survived by his children Christi Welch (Jeremy), Karen Schmid and Gary Michael Duckworth Jr., his beloved wife Linda and bonus children Kevin (Kara) Barnett, Kelly (Stiphini) Barnett and Kristina (Bryon) Smith. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As an extra bonus, he is also survived by a dear friend, Kay Matson, who also happened to be his first wife at the age of 19…let’s just say Jesus worked a miracle in healing those old wounds, but that is a story for another day!

Johanna F Stuhlmiller - June 04, 1938 - November 28, 2023

Departed: 11/28/2023 (Quincy)
Obituary Preview: It is with earthly sadness and heavenly joy that the family of Johanna Franziska Stuhlmiller announces that her blessed Lord Jesus called her home to her victorious eternal rest midway through the morning while she was sleeping on Tuesday November 28, 2023. A lovely, elegant woman who never shrunk from a difficulty, stepped back from a task to be done, or turned aside from someone in need, Johanna will forever be remembered and deeply cherished in the hearts of those who knew her best.
Johanna was born June 4, 1938 to Michael and Maria Eberl in the heart of Bavaria in Bad Tolz, Germany. In her teen years, she left her home and underwent training in a finishing school for girls. At the age of 17, Johanna boarded the U.S.S. Constitution with her sister Anna and traveled to America, landing on Ellis Island, to continue her life in the United States. Johanna arrived in Cheney, Washington in 1955 and resided there with her sister while she took some college courses and worked as a waitress at a local malt shop. She also cared for her niece, Michelle, when at home during the day.
Johanna met Raymond, her husband of 63 years in December 1959. They began dating a month later, sharing many wonderful times together and were married on November 12, 1960 in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Cheney. Johanna and Raymond then began their life together just outside of Quincy, Washington, on the family ranch above Trinidad where Raymond was farming dryland wheat. It was also in 1960 that Johanna became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Children came soon after with the births of David, Michael and Heidi. In 1967, Johanna and Raymond moved into their new home in Quincy where Johanna would spend the rest of her life as a wife, mother and homemaker. Johanna loved her home and took care of it with a Bavarian housewife’s touch.
Raised in a Roman Catholic family, Johanna took on the Lutheran faith soon after marrying Raymond. Johanna enjoyed participating in altar guild, helping with meals, and participating in the ladies' groups, while supporting her family’s growth in the teaching of the Lord.
Johanna revealed herself to be very structured and organized, stern, yet loving and kind, always following a disciplined approach to dealing with her children, getting work done and in helping with any other needs of the family and farming operation as necessary. During the wheat harvest, Johanna kept the family eating well both out on the farm and when returning for dinner after the day’s work.
Johanna was a skilled cook and her kitchen was always clean and welcoming – usually the place in the house where everyone would meet to visit together. She liked baking new things, cutting out recipes and she especially enjoyed making chocolate chip cookies for the family and the neighbors.
Johanna enjoyed her social activities, participating in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, encouraging her children in their activities, snow-skiing with Raymond in the winter, visiting Leavenworth and sewing. A highlight of her life took place in 1960 when she attended the Squaw Valley Olympics to watch her brother Schorsch compete in ice hockey for the German Olympic team.
Through the years, Johanna traveled to Germany often, always refreshing her love for home and for her hometown Bad Tolz, sitting on the Isar River amid the German alps. Many of these trips were taken with Raymond and their children, who fondly remember all the sights and sounds of a beautiful land that seemed so imaginary, but that their mother remembered only as home. Johanna and Raymond traveled to many places throughout Germany. Johanna was always sharing her homeland with everyone who was interested. She dressed in a classy European style and was always shopping for the latest fashions wherever she could find them.
In the last 4 or 5 years of her life, Johanna was beset by lingering health problems with which she coped daily. In her last few months of life, Johanna lived her life as always, waking up to her morning cup of coffee, enjoying her life with Raymond and keeping in close touch with her children and the rest of her family.
Johanna was preceded in death by her father and mother, Michael and Maria Eberl of Bad Tolz, Germany; her sisters, Maria Eberl of Bad Tolz and Anna Colyar (Art) of Cheney, Washington; and her brothers Michael Eberl (Gertraud) and Schorsch Eberl (Ingrid) of Bad Tolz. Johanna is survived by her sister-in-law, Ingrid Eberl.
Johanna is survived by her husband, Raymond Stuhlmiller, her sons, David Stuhlmiller and Michael Stuhlmiller, and her daughter, Heidi Wurl (Rod), and her two grandchildren, Jacob Deleeuw and Olivia Deleeuw. She loved her children and she was always keeping track of what and how they were doing. She enjoyed it when her kids would come home and visit. She was always a very big part in the lives of her husband and children.
Johanna is also survived by her many nephews and nieces, both in Germany and here in America, she loved them all and was always looking forward to seeing them again. She enjoyed such fun times with them through the many years.
A memorial service has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Friday December 15th, 2023 at The Old German-Lutheran church in Quincy, Washington. The address for this church is 415 F Street S.W., Quincy, WA 98848. An internment will be held in the Quincy Cemetery following a meal.
