"Ed" Brown, age 86 of Defiance, passed away at his residence on Monday morning, April 25, 2022 with his wife by his side.           He was born on September 11, 1935 to Harry and Rosa (Warren) Brown at Defiance, Ohio. Ed proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. In 1958 he married Beverly (Carlin) Brown, who survives. Ed was a member of First Assembly of God. He worked at John's Manville from 1953 until his retirement in 1999. He loved animals, old cars, and nature. Ed had a heart of gold and always helped others in need.     Ed will be sadly missed by his loving wife Beverly Brown of Defiance, his brother, Harry (Frances) Brown, Jr. of Defiance, and his sister, Pearl Presley of Angola, Indiana.     He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Everitt, Harrison and Wesley Brown, and his sisters, Irene Brown and Marie Grunden.    Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2022 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm at the funeral home, with Pastor Scott Williams and Pastor Randy Wilson officiating. Frederick R. Batt - April 25, 1948 - April 24, 2022

Obituary Preview: Frederick R. Batt, age 73 of Defiance, passed away early Sunday morning,  April 24, 2022 at Mercy Hospital of Defiance.      He was born on April 25, 1948 to Alphonse and Helen (Justinger) Batt in Defiance, Ohio. Fred proudly served our country in the U.S. Army Military Police from January 4, 1967 to September 7, 1968 during the Vietnam War.     Fred was a faithful member of .St. John's Catholic Church, AmVets #1991, Defiance Eagles #372, and was a life member of VFW #3360. He served the City of Defiance as a Police Officer from January 7, 1969 to April 8, 1980. He then pursued a career as a bulk fuel route driver for Sohio, BP, then owned and operated Batt Petroleum, delivering to area farmers. Every year Fred attended a Vietnam Veteran reunion in Kokomo, Indiana. He loved golfing, hunting, and being outdoors. Fred had many good friends and colleagues and will be greatly missed.      Fred is survived by his brother, Eugene (Marge) Batt of Defiance, three sisters, Patricia Walter of Defiance, Kathleen Boyd of Broken Arrow, OK, and Mary (Stan) Fitzenrider-Cox of Defiance, stepdaughter Melanie (John) Finlay of South Bend, IN, stepson Chris Duquette of Seattle, WA, and many nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Leonard, and eight brothers; Paul, Victor, Jerome, James, Ronald, Dennis, Harold and Thomas Batt.    Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawsom/Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton St.) in Defiance. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. John's Catholic Church,with Fr. John Stites officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery with graveside military honors conducted by VFW #3360.    Memorials are suggested to Riley Children's Hospital or St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Obituary Preview: Okie Lee Fitch, age 74 of Defiance, passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio.      He was born on October 29, 1947 to the late Okie and Elsie (Collins) Fitch in Handshoe, Kentucky. On July 16, 1966 he married the love of his life, Phyllis (Gasser) Fitch, who survives.     Okie was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Eagles Aerie #372, UAW #211 in Defiance, and an associate member of VFW Post #587 in Paulding, Ohio. He worked at General Motors in Defiance for 28 years until his retirement in 1994. He enjoyed watching UK football and basketball. In his leisure time he loved going to his cabin in Kentucky and fishing with his grandkids. Okie was a dedicated husband and father who treasured his time spent with his family and grandchildren.       Okie will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Phyllis Fitch of Defiance, his son, Stephen (Kathy) Fitch of Oakwood, OH, and his daughters, Deanna Carnahan of Defiance and Paula (Brian Bailey) Amstutz of Avilla, IN. He also leaves three grandchildren, Justin (Darby) Carnahan, Katie Carnahan, and Linsie Amstutz, his step-grandchildren, Heather (Bob) Fields and Kendra Kauser, and his sisters, Millie Hughes of Lima, OH, Marie Cross of Defiance, OH and Sally Bailey of Lima, OH.     He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather Edward Miller, and his brother, Doug Fitch.    Visitation will be held on Monday, April 25, 2022 from 3:00 to 6:30 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. On June 10, 2017 she married James Lacey, who survives. Michelle was a loving wife and mother. She loved playing softball with her kids and grandkids. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, and collecting Coca-Cola products and Elvis Presley memorabilia.

Strom, age 60 of Defiance, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2022 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio.      She was born on November 13, 1961 in Defiance, Ohio to the late Paul and Dorothy (Hammon) Krontz. On June 23, 2007 she married Edmond Strom, who survives.
Rebecca was a life member of VFW #3360 Auxiliary. She enjoyed auctions, flea markets, and thrift stores. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Rebecca treasured her time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.    Rebecca will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Edmond Strom of Defiance, her children; Melody (James) Lime of Defiance, Constance (Josh) Wagner of Defiance, and Roger Strom of Monroe, Georgia, her grandchildren; Bre, Seth, Courtni, Harmony and Kaylee, and her siblings; Raymond (Connie) Krontz, Bruce Krontz, Connie (Dale) Bower and Deb Aden, all of Defiance.     She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Paul Krontz.    A Memorial Service for Rebecca will be held at a later date. Obituary Preview: MaryJo Pickering, age 70 of Defiance, peacefully passed away on Good Friday evening, April 15, 2022 at Certus Healthcare Center in Defiance, Ohio.      She was born on December 14, 1951 to the late Kenneth and Catherine (Anksorus) Gillespie in Coon Rapids, Iowa. On October 14, 1972 she married Kirk Pickering, who survives.    MaryJo was a member of Family Christian Center in Defiance. She was a social butterfly and loved all people. She had a Servant's Heart and loved to help others and serve The Lord. Her grandsons were at the top of her world. She enjoyed reading and crocheting, and going to area car shows. MaryJo was a member of FCC Motorcycle Club "Eagle's Wings" and "Threads" Knitting Group. She will be sadly missed by her family and many good friends.    MaryJo is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Kirk Pickering of Defiance, her daughters, Adrianne (Roswell) Shelhamer of Waynesville, OH, and Jamie (Thomas) Ort of Defiance, and four grandsons; Walter and Willard Shelhamer and Brennan and Zayden Ort. She also leaves behind her siblings; Patty Sonmor of Minnesota, Jim (Joan) Christianson of Michigan, Kelsey (Sally) Long of Nevada, and Keith (Bobbi) Long of North Carolina.    She was preceded in death by her parents, and her stepfather, Eldon Long.     Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at Family Christian Center in Defiance. A Memorial Service will follow at 12:00 pm at the church, with Pastor Tim Tracy officiating. Burial will follow the service at Ayersville Cemetery.

John R. Mohr Jr. - June 06, 1939 - April 13, 2022

Obituary Preview: Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend John R. Mohr, Jr., 82, died peacefully at his home in Defiance on April 13, 2022.
He was born in Defiance on June 6, 1939, the son of John R. and Violet M. (Varner) Mohr. On September 26, 1964 he married the love of his life, Ella Louise (Jacobson) Mohr. Together during their 57 years of marriage, they raised five wonderful children; Carrie Frey (Dave), Cathy Tijerina (Ron), Connie Davis (Rick), John Mohr (Sherry), and Dan Mohr (Lisa). He also leaves behind 24 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and his sisters Judy Shininger (Cyril) and Becky Mohr. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, David Mohr (Doreen).
John was a devout lifelong member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church and attended public school in Defiance, Ohio. He joined the U.S. Army on May 9, 1962 and was honorably discharged on April 30, 1968.
He was an active member of the Eagles, VFW, Moose, and Amvets, as well as the Volunteer Fireman’s Association. John Mohr devoted thirty years of work and service to Western and Southern Life Insurance Inc.  After retiring from Western and Southern, he worked part-time at the Eagles. He served as Chaplain at the Amvets from 1991 to 1998 and loved to provide support and help to others in that role and this is where friends began to affectionately call him “Father John.”
With his family and friends, he particularly enjoyed golf. He was an avid reader, witty and animated storyteller, and a history buff.
The family invites friends and family to visit Schaffer Funeral Home, 529 Jefferson Ave. on Monday, April 18, 2022 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary Service scheduled for 2:00 pm. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19th at Saint Mary’s Church in Defiance, Ohio. Father John Stites will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery after the service.
Memorial donations are suggested to Saint Mary’s Food Pantry or Food for the Poor.

On December 21, 1951 she married William H.C. Benard, who preceded her in death on August 28, 1995.     Beulah was a member of  Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church in Junction, Ohio, Order of Eastern Star Lodge, and Defiance Eagles #372. She worked as a cook at Defiance College for ten years, and at local nursing homes in the area for over 32 years until her retirement in 1984. Beulah loved to travel and spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.     Beulah will be sadly missed by her daughters, Linda (Boyd) Vance of Oakwood, OH and Sarah (Robert) Anderson of Montpelier, OH, her sons, William C. (Mary) Benard and David M. (Patricia) Benard, all of Defiance, and Charles R. (Trish) Benard of Grover Hill, OH, 19 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.     In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Norma Jean Benard, brothers, Cecil, Richard and Curtis Lane, her sisters, Irma Richie and Virginia Neff, and her stepdaughter, Phyllis Harrell.    Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. Mary married Lewis R. Johnston on October 27, 1950. They were married for 69 years until his death in 2020.
Mary is survived by her son, David L. (Denise) Johnston of Sylvania, OH.     In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Roger Demland, and her sister Fern Flory.
To honor Mary's wishes there will not be any visitation or services. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery.

She treasured her time spent with her family and especially with her grandchildren. Deb was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Wurster, age 85 of Defiance, peacefully passed away with her family by her side on Saturday morning, April 9, 2022 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.      She was born on June 13, 1936 to the late Benton and Koneta (Moore) Packer in Chicago, Illinois. On June 25, 1955 she married Jack Lee Wurster, who survives.
Sandy earned her Bachelor's degree with honors at Defiance College and was a teacher at Defiance City Schools and St. Mary Catholic School until her retirement in 2003. She was a  faithful member of First Church of God in Defiance, and was the Administrator of First Church of God Elementary School. She enjoyed her years spent as a Boy Scout Den Mother for Pack #58, coaching the Blue Dolphins swim team, and volunteering at the Community Pregnancy Center. Sandy loved visiting Mackinaw City, going to the beach, and looking for petoskey stones. She was a wonderful and caring wife, mother, grandmother and teacher, and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.      Sandra is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Jack Lee Wurster of Defiance, her sons; Todd (Michele) Wurster and Steven (Lisa) Wurster, her daughter, Geraldine (Jim) Dodson, daughters-in-law, Kim and Pamela Wurster, 33 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Margaret (John) Orta, her sons, Brent and Matthew Wurster, and her brother, Benton Packer.    Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2022 from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. Ellen was co-owner of Morris Floor Covering. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sitting poolside with her grandchildren, feeding the birds, family cookouts and drag racing. She loved attending car shows, especially to see her favorite orange cars with black stripes. Spending time with her family was always her priority, and she will be sadly missed by her family and many good friends.    Ellen is survived by her loving husband Bill Kuckuck of Defiance, her two sons, Bill (Kathy) Kuckuck of Defiance and Levi (April) Kuckuck of Wauseon, OH, two daughters, Jenna (Josh) Gerken of Edon, OH and Janelle (Jeremy) Snider of Camp Pendleton, CA. She also leaves behind ten grandchildren; Dylan, Carlea, Xander, Kayde, Dean, Barrett, Trevon, Brailynn, Bricynn and Blakley, her brothers; George R. (Tonie) Morris Jr., Rudy (Julee) Morris and David (Bobi) Morris, six sisters; Connie (Tom) Haver, Tina (Gary) Siler, Sarah (Mark) Wolfrum, Jenny (Tim) Greear, Janice (Mike) Wolfrum and Gina (Gannon) Bryant, five brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

He also leaves behind his grandchildren; Trevor and Whitney Morrett, Kayden, Jocelynn, Brooklynn, Isabella, Walker, Annalei, Kylie, Levi and Hunter Spath, Addalyn and Michael Corneiller, and Hunter and Abby Rue, his great-grandchildren; Xavier, Asher and Kinsley Spath, and his siblings; Jack (Fiona) Spath of Utah, Rod (Linda) Spath of Huntington, IN, Becky Holmes of Huntington, IN, his twin sister, Emma (Kenny) Gressley of Andrews, IN, his dog "Marie", and his fiancé Lisa Arthur of Defiance.     He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Spath, his sisters, Judy Phillips, Linda Stone, and Donna Mae Spath, and his brother, Curtis Spath.    Visitation will be held on Friday, April 8, 2022 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. Dave was a faithful member of Zion's Lutheran Church and a member of  the church council, the property committee, and was a sexton. He was also a member of Elks Lodge #147 and was an Eagle Scout. Dave earned his Master's Degree at Defiance College and taught General Business classes at Ayersville Local School for 36 years until his retirement. Dave enjoyed being a real estate agent for Yoder Realty for 50 years and was an Auction Clerk for Estate sales. Dave loved to keep busy. Besides his tremendous sense of humor and wit, many friends and former students will remember him for his kind and compassionate nature and his great business sense. Affectionately known as "D.R." Dave was loved and respected by his family, friends, students and colleagues. He loved his family and was very proud of his sons and their accomplishments.    Dave is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara Jones of Defiance, his three sons, Michael (Kristin) Jones of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Craig (Marybeth) Jones, and Stephen (Kathryn) Jones, all of White Plains, New York, and his grandchildren; Luke, Ry, Nora, Audrey and Hank Jones.     He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Paul Jones.    Visitation will be held on Friday, April 1, 2022 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, Ohio. John was born on April 29, 1938, to the late Irven and Mildred Brownlee in Salem, Ohio. John was a 1956 graduate of Springfield Local School Petersburg, Ohio. John then attended Bowling Green State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in business management in 1961. After graduation John enlisted in the United States Navy and attended the US Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. John was commissioned a Junior Officer in June of 1962. John proudly completed his active and reserve duty with the United States Navy in June of 1972.
John never met a stranger. He enjoyed the people he met during his 40 plus year career as an independent insurance agent in Defiance, Ohio. He really had a good time being with his friends in the Defiance Jaycees and the Defiance Optimist Club. He also enjoyed playing golf and antiquing with his wife Sharon.
Surviving John are his wife, Sharon, sister Jane Young of Columbus, Ohio, children Ann (Paul) Mallett of Defiance, Ohio, John (Judy) Brownlee Jr. of Columbus, Ohio stepchildren Dawn (Jay) McMillen of Dayton, Ohio, Terri (Patrick) Roberts of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Tracy Trame (Rich Hanson) of Crystal Beach, Florida, 7 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 5 step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother William Brownlee, and stepdaughter Jenny Trame.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date. There will be a Celebration of Life reception on Friday, June 10, 2022 at Defiance VFW at 12:00 noon.

Brenda was a former Senior Regent for the Women of the Moose in Defiance, of which she was a member of long standing. She enjoyed gardening, time spent with friends, traveling to Kentucky to see family members, and the Hallmark Channel. If you knew Brenda well, you knew she loved her coffee.
She is survived by her daughters, Jerilyn (Kenneth) Relue and Aleesha (Anthony Brown) Bruce, all of Defiance, and sons Steven (Gina) Singleton of Ft. Collins, CO, and Joshua Bruce of Defiance, her grandchildren Octaven (Ron) Craig, Heaven Eaton-Bruce, Jackson and Adam Singleton, and Jordan Leitner, and also her loyal bulldog Shady.
In addition she is survived by eight sisters, Dorothy (Dean) Carver, Annie (Ronnie) Thurman, Donna (Scott) Bennett, Kathy (Mike) Nolen, Mabel (Lovell) Nolen, all of Kentucky, Arta (Joe) Parker of Dayton, Peggy (Tracy) Vaughn of South Carolina, and Sharon (Randy) Creech of Kentucky, three brothers, Noble (Lisa) Monteith, Earl Monteith  all of Kentucky, and Mike (Kathy) Monteith of Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews.    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gary, sister Eva King, and brother Carl Monteith Jr.     Visitation will be held on Monday, March 28, 2022 from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson/Roessner Chapel (1753 S. On December 9, 1950 she married Ralph W. Wolfrum, who preceded her in death on December 3, 1979.     Martha was a member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, and St. Mike's Golf Club. She enjoyed crafting, bowling, crocheting, and playing golf.
