Obituary Preview: Brian Andrew Sweitzer, 40, of Cumberland passed away October 18, 2023 at his father’s home.
He was born March 13, 1983, in Columbia, MD, to Thomas Joe Sweitzer and Janet Lee Presnell.
Brian attended Allegany High School and went on to work for FEMA with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He was an avid hunter and loved fishing.
In addition to his parents Brian is survived by his son, Landon Sweitzer and his daughter, Rowan Sweitzer; siblings, Greg Goss and wife Tina, Staci Goss, and Chris Sweitzer and wife Tiffany; grandmother, Wanda Sweitzer; step-mother Pauline Sweitzer; step-father, Jon Presnell; and a large extended family with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. He was predeceased by maternal grandparents, Clyde and Lillian Dennis; and paternal grandfather, Thomas R. Sweitzer.
In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated.
Visitation will be Monday, October 23, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy, Cresaptown, MD. A memorial service will immediately follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Charlie Riggleman officiating.

Catherine Ann Armstrong - June 26, 1926 - August 26, 2023

Obituary Preview: Catherine Ann Armstrong, 97, passed away peacefully August 26, 2023 at Allegany County Health and Rehab in Cumberland, Maryland. She was born in Cumberland June 26, 1926 to Mary and Cecil Dawson. Catherine graduated from Allegany High School in 1944. She married Jim Armstrong in Alabama August 5th of that same year when Jim was learning to fly for the Army Air Corp. Catherine worked for many years up until her retirement at Barton's Restaurant (The Cow) where she will be remembered fondly for being one of the best waitresses in town.
Catherine was an amazing woman loved by all who knew her. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend to many. Catherine was always there to help when needed and showed her love by cooking and baking for friends and family. She was a lifelong member of the Rawlings United Methodist Church serving on numerous committees throughout the years. She was also active in various organizations including the local Homemakers Club, Red Hat Society, and TOPS where she made many friends.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of us all and she will be dearly missed.
Catherine was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, James Armstrong; her three brothers, John, Jim and Robert Dawson, and her sister Marylou Kendall.  She is survived by her children Donna Snyder, husband Robert and James “Jimmy” Armstrong II; three grandchildren; Melissa Snyder (Tim Figueroa), Jennifer Croce (Clay Croce) and Teresa Kulish (Tom Kulish); and seven great-grandchildren: Kelsey, Timothy, Caylin, Gabriel, Caden, Olivia and Benjamin; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 31st from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, MD.
A funeral service will take place Friday, September 1st at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Merle Correll officiating, visitation will take place one hour prior to service.
Internment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, MD.

Obituary Preview: Patricia “Pat” Rae Skidmore, 81, of Cumberland went home to be with her Lord and savior with her family by her side on Friday, May 19, 2023.
Pat was born in Cumberland on February 4, 1942 to the late Harold and Jessie Crawford.
Pat graduated from Allegany High School with the Class of 1960 and married her high school sweetheart in the same year. She was a loving mother and homemaker always. After her children were situated in school she went on to work at Friends Aware for 10 years and then on to HRDC from where she retired. Later came her grandchildren who she watched as much as they would allow her.
She loved being a Sunday School teacher and Awana member at Calvary Baptist Church. She was an avid reader, and read the Bible cover to cover at least ten times. Traveling with her family was her favorite hobby and she loved camping.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, James C. Skidmore; daughters, Patricia Diane Edwards and husband Randy, Kathy Nelson of Indianapolis, and Linda Nestor and husband Kenny; grandchildren, James Killian, Steven Killian, Jessica Bittinger and husband Travis, Jay Nestor and wife Sierra, Erick Nestor; three great-grandchildren, Austin Bittinger, Jaidyn and Rylee Nestor; a brother, Steve Crawford and wife Shirley of Sugarland, Texas; and many great friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 23rd from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown. A funeral service will immediately follow at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor David Hattenfield officiating.

Minnie Marlene Minnick - January 28, 1934 - July 16, 2022

Obituary Preview: CUMBERLAND - Minnie Marlene Minnick, age 88, loving mother of three, passed away on the afternoon of Saturday July 16th at home.
Marlene was born on a farm on January 28, 1934 in Avilton, Maryland. Minnie Marlene Hunter was named after her aunt Minnie Suter. She is preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Ruth Hunter and her siblings Lee Hunter, Virginia Hunter and Les Hunter.
Her favorite memories growing up were climbing trees and riding horses. She bought her first horse, a male thoroughbred, when she was 22 years old in 1956 and named him Red. She loved to share memories of Red. Marlene worked at Lyons Manor as a dietary aide. She attended a local Methodist church where she was baptized at age 20 with her sister Virginia present. Later in life, she enjoyed making ceramics, knitting, and John Wayne movies.
She is survived by her three daughters, Donna Frankenberry and husband Steve, Wanda Broadwater and significant other Randy, Stacey Browning and husband Troy; along with grandchildren, Sonya, Amber, Megan, Shane, Jessa, and Nick; and great-grandchildren, Trenton, Briah, Alyvia, Ethan, Andi, Gage, Lilly, Evan, Caleb, Eden, Alyana and Sophia. She was known to all as “Mommom.” She was full of love, and the most important thing in her life was her family.

She was born on June 20, 1923, in Midland, MD, to the late William and Lillian Gray. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Walker Main; son, James W. Main Sr.; and an infant daughter, Rita Marie Main.
Mary graduated from Central High School of Lonaconing in 1942. She worked as a spinstress for the Celanese Corp until she was married. Mary was a member of the Short Gap Volunteer Fire Co Ladies Auxiliary and Wesley Chapel UME where she was a part of the woman’s society.
Mary was known to love cooking and helped every year to make Easter eggs for church. She loved spending time with her family at camp and especially the time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Sue Mullin and husband, Randy, of Barboursville, WV; grandchildren, Gina Marie Towne, Jennifer Michelle Billups and husband, Jason, and James Main, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Lyndia Main; great-grandchildren, Samantha Towne, Mea Billups, Kylie Billups; a great-great-grandson, Hunter Plumley; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, MD.

Justin was born August 10th, 1983 in Silver Spring, MD. He is the son of Brian Joseph Snyder and Ometa Eleana Snyder. He grew up in Cumberland, Maryland and was a graduate of Allegany High School, Class of 2001. He was a member of the Campers soccer and wrestling teams. He owned a successful remodeling and restoring business within the area for 15 years. His passion and creativity helped bring vibrancy and joy into the homes and local businesses of so many.
He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, and a talented guitarist and musician. His music brought great joy to those who surrounded him; when an instrument was placed in his hands, he could light up any room. Justin loved to exercise his culinary skills and treat family and friends to his latest creations. He also enjoyed hiking in the serene surroundings of nature. He saw the beauty in everyone; his memory will forever be woven into the fabric of all who knew him and loved him. Justin, the song has ended but your melody lingers on. Until we meet again, we’ll always look up to the sky, listen for the trees and know that you are near. All our love; until our next adventure… He is survived by his parents, Brian and Ometa Snyder of Stephens City, Virginia; his sisters, Jessica Hartman and Jocelyn Kalbaugh; his brothers-in law, Jason Hartman and Ryan Kalbaugh; his nieces, Elliana Snyder, Emma Hartman, and Eden Hartman; and his nephews, Micah Hartman and Brady Kalbaugh. Once the service has been rescheduled, updated service times will be posted accordingly. CUMBERLAND -- “Becki” Rebecca Jane Wallace (née Topper), 74, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2021. Born in Cumberland to George William Topper and Shirley Jane Barnhart, she graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1964, where she was May Queen in her senior year. From early childhood, she lived by some broad guiding principles: “first do no harm,” and hold true to the words she adored in the poem, “Desiderata.”
Becki met her lifelong love in high school, and they later married. In 1970, they realized their shared dream of buying a small farm in Bedford County as their forever family home. Along with five children, they raised numerous animals and grew vegetables, herbs, flowers, and edible plants—50 plus years filled with so many events, funny stories, and cherished memories.
She was a steadfast parent-member and volunteer supporter of the 4-H Dairy Goat Club for nearly 50 years because she truly loved all “kids.” Becki enjoyed attending monthly “Class of 64” dinners, picnics, and annual reunions, spending time with her girlfriends, Pam and Peggy, and volunteering with many others at the 4-H Club. She also volunteered occasionally at the Helping Hunger food giveaways. Becki loved being with her family, laughing, dancing to “the oldies,” listening to John Denver, dressing up in hand-made costumes, and creating art projects in paint, pen and ink, pastels, fabric, yarn, pottery, wood, and other creative mediums.
In addition to her many talents, she was known for being very beautiful, kind, generous, and by her wonderful laugh and bright smile. Becki was a lifelong learner who chose to focus on one new plant or process each year and was always willing to share her wealth of knowledge about the natural world with friends and family. She will be remembered most for being a stable, loving, and supportive mom, wife, sister, and friend.
Becki was preceded in death by her parents; husband “Dump” Robert Raymond Timothy Wallace; daughter Amy Leigh Wallace; and daughter-in-law Julie Ann Wallace.

Harry Wayne Little - January 27, 1938 - December 28, 2020

Obituary Preview: Harry Wayne Little, 82, of LaVale passed away on December 28, 2020 at the Moran Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on January 27, 1938 in Lynchburg, VA and was proceeded in death by his parents, Harry Little, Sr. and Gladys Scruggs.
“Chick-Little” as his friends knew him graduated from LaSalle High School and then served in the U.S. Navy. He was well known for playing the piano solo and with various bands in New London, CT, the Florida Keys, and the greater Cumberland area. He then owned and operated The Southern Lounge, formerly in Cumberland. Following he primarily worked in residential real estate rentals as an owner and operator until his retirement.
In retirement he continued to play the piano at local nursing homes to share his gift and entertain the residents. In addition he loved traveling with his wife to the ocean and was a big animal lover.
Surviving is his wife of 40 years, Karen L. Little; three daughters, Laurie Little of Texas, Priscilla Gordon and fiancé Curtis of LaVale, Melissa Martz of Cumberland; two step-daughters, Tammy Starr of Connecticut and Sherry Starr-Laco of Florida; three grandchildren, Billy Gordon and Josh Gordon of Virginia, Marissa Martz of Cumberland; two sisters, Robin Torbit and husband Jack of Virginia, Sandy Harbin and husband Ron of Virginia; a brother, Phillip Rawlings of Virginia; and a large extended family.
Friends will be received on Monday, January 4th from 1 to 2:00 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, MD. Lillian enjoyed working in her flower beds and doing Thomas Kinkaid cross-stitch pictures. She also loved her visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Proctorville, OH. Mom enjoyed vacations at Deep Creek Lane, MD, and the Outer Banks, NC, with family and her friend, Norma Jean McKenzie.
Surviving are her daughter, Arlene Weasenforth and husband William, LaVale; son, Robert A. McFarland and wife Kendra, Proctorville, OH; granddaughter, Samalin Spurlock and husband Chris, Proctorville, OH; grandson, Matthew R. Barb was a graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1945. She later graduated from the University of Maryland with bachelor’s degrees in French and English.
In her free time, Barb enjoyed the Florida beach life, golf, tennis, skiing, bridge, and crossword puzzles.
Barb is survived by her daughters, Tama S. Scarpelli and husband, Nick, and Tracy S. Smyth and husband, John; grandchildren, Leah N. Scarpelli, William Donald Corson, and Victor J. Scarpelli.

Debra Kaye Spinnenweber, 64, of Cumberland, passed away Monday, December 16, 2019, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born June 8, 1955, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of Richard O. and Gloria O. (Wilson) Springer.
Debbie was preceded in death by her son, Brian P. Spinnenweber, in 2007.
Debbie was a 1973 graduate of Fort Hill High School and was drum major her senior year. She then graduated from West Virginia University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in interior design. While attending West Virginia University, she belonged to the Kappa Delta sorority. She became vice president of General Graphics, Inc., a company founded by her father in 1964, and worked there with her husband from 1983 until the early summer of 2019.
She was an active member of the Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs, serving as an officer on state, district, and local levels. She devoted much of her life to Civic Club activities. Debbie was also a member, along with her husband, of the Deep Creek Yacht Club, and she was an avid reader.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Bruce P. Spinnenweber; daughter, Lauren K. McCready and husband, Miles, Little Elm, TX; sister, Karen Muccioli and husband, Geri, Bel Air, MD; brother, Richard Springer, Jr. and wife, Nancy, Butler, PA.
In accordance with her wishes, Debbie’s body will be cremated.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, on Friday, January 10, 2020, from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. with Debbie’s cousin, Pastor Larry Michael, officiating.

Born in London, England, on June 17, 1934, she was the daughter of James and Ellen (O’Reilly) Fitzpatrick. In addition to her parents, Maureen was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Griffith, and her brother, Paddy Fitzpatrick.
Maureen attended school in London and earned her diploma in England. She was employed in the Anesthesia Department at Sacred Heart Hospital, and retired from that position. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church of Our Lady of The Mountains Parish, and Maureen volunteered in the Hospice Program at Sacred Heart.
Maureen is survived by her husband 59 years, Owen Martin Dorrsey; children James P. Dorsey and wife Susan of Broomfield, CO, Ann Marie Coleman, Cumberland, David O. Dorsey and wife Kim, Towson, and J. Kevin Dorsey, Canton, OH; grandchildren, Kacey M. Pouliot and husband Chris, Baltimore, MD, Christopher T. J. Dorsey, Denver, CO. Sofia S. Dorsey, Canton, OH, Michael O. Dorsey, Towson, MD, and Owen P. Dorsey, Canton, OH.; daughter-in-law, Rosa S. Dorsey, Canton, OH; sister, Lilly Bourne, London, England.

Alston was a kind hearted, easy going soul. He would help anyone he saw in need. He loved cutting grass accompanied by his John Deere mower. He was employed by the Maryland Department of Highways for 35 years. He was a member of the Livingstone Church of the Brethren and AFL-CIO Local Union.
Alston is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hazel V. (Helmick) Combs; son Alston L. Combs, Jr and wife Marsha, Keyser, WV; daughter Barbara A. Smith and husband Paul, Harrisonburg, VA; three grandchildren Becky Crites and husband Pastor Pascal Crites, Accident, MD; Pastor Lee Smith and wife Laura, Mt. Pleasant, PA; Andrew J. Born on July 4, 1937 in Mount Storm, WV, he was the son to the late John H. Hanlin and Mae Kitzmiller Hanlin. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charlie Hanlin; and sister, Linda Mooreland.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Carol F. (Pennington) Hanlin; their two children, Timothy D. Hanlin and Darren R. Hanlin; their granddaughter, Ashlyn E. Hanlin and her boyfriend Zachary Stevens; and his two sisters, Sue Henley and Bonnie Talbot.
He was a man that loved his family, friends, his work, and his cats more than anything. Roy was a hard-working man his whole life; his knowledge was well respected. Through his work at Vepco, Potomac Metal, and Mineral Fab, he has made many lifelong friends and relationships.
He is loved, and will be missed by many.

Born on August 12, 1925, in Corriganville, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Edna May (DeVore) Morris. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, H. Flint Huffman in 1988, and Robert W. Plummer in 2009; brothers, James, Richard, and Francis Morris; sisters, Shirley Plummer, Anna Taylor, and Delores Stottlemyer; brother-in-law, Charles Taylor; and son-in-law, Earl Hillegas.
Mary was a member of LaVale Chapel, where she received Christ. She later attended Cornerstone Baptist Church and NorthStar Church until she was no longer able to go. She enjoyed going to the senior group in Centerville, PA, and the Good Samaritans at Cornerstone.
When she was able, she enjoyed traveling, shopping, and just spending time with her family. She was a Godly example to her friends and family, and will be missed greatly.
She is survived by her daughters, Carol A. Hillegas, and Theresa A. Stevens and husband Larry, all of LaVale; five grandchildren, Steve Hillegas, Cumberland, Brian Hillegas and wife Kathie, Hancock, MD, Matthew Stevens and wife Eli, Norfolk, VA, Allyssa Smith and husband Roland, Cumberland, and Jesse Stevens, Norfolk, VA; four great-grandchildren, Stephanie Hillegas, LaVale, Noah Hillegas, Cumberland, Trinity Hillegas, Cumberland, and Zaniyah Stevens, Norfolk, VA; one great great-grandson, Elijah Hillegas, LaVale, born this year, and who put the sparkle back in her eyes; and two step-daughters, Cheryl A. Mitchell and family, Greentown, PA, and Sharon L. Hardinger and family, Cumberland.

Minke and husband John; grandchildren, Shannon Shook, Kristin Minke, JC Minke, and Brandy Ritchey; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother; one sister; as well as several nieces and nephews.
