Obituary Preview: Carol Dean (Gruben) Edwards was called to Heaven on April 21, 2022. Carol was born on June 4, 1930, in Rotan, Texas to Danie and Pearl Gruben. She was the fourth of seven children. Carol spent her early years in Rotan and attended school there. As a family of cotton farmers, she learned the importance of hard work, love of family, but also the importance of faith and a love of God. The family was active members of the Cross Roads Baptist Church.
After graduation, she met Hughey Edwards and on June 27, 1948, she eloped with him, on a motorcycle no less. They moved to Corpus Christi and two years later they welcomed their son, Donald Ricky Edwards. She retired in December 1984. Carol was a member of the Morgan Avenue Baptist Church, Calallen Baptist Church and finally River Hills Baptist Church. Hughey and Carol were married for 43 years before his passing. They shared a love of motorcycle riding and doting on their granddaughter.
Carol had an intense love of all crafts, especially sewing and crocheting. After retirement, she was free to spend many more hours sewing and crafting her days away. Carol and Mildred ministered to many people through the church. They always had a hand-crafted gift in hand, cheery smiles, prayers, and words of encouragement. So many people were touched by their selfless acts. Before Carol became homebound, she was always out and about, ministering to others, helping with the Pioneer Museum, and enjoying her family. She loved her family fiercely and relished attending all the events of not only her granddaughter and great-grandchildren, but her siblings, nieces, and nephews. She took her role as Grandmother and Great-Grandmother role very seriously. Gary Ray Smith - August 17, 1954 - April 15, 2022

Departed: 04/15/2022 (Corpus Christi)
Obituary Preview: Gary Ray Smith, 67, of Odem, TX, passed away at his home on April 15th, 2022 with his wife and children by his side. Born on August 17, 1954 in Bertram, TX to Toby & Bea Smith, Gary spent his youth in Marble Falls where he met his wife of nearly 50 years, Rebecca (Becky) Faye Atkinson.
An avid minister of hard work, Gary began his first job at 5 years old, picking cotton alongside his grandparents in Liberty Hill, TX. This early employment experience served as a foundational reference and basis for comparison when his children were unable to mow the lawn as exceptionally as the 5-year-old version of himself would’ve done so.  As a United States Army veteran who volunteered to serve during Vietnam, he was a role model to his children and grandchildren who continue to follow in his footsteps. After 8 years of service, and winning Top Gun in Seridan’s for 5 consecutive years, he decided to leave military service as he wanted any future children that he and Becky had to be born true Texans, which they wouldn’t be if they were born on a military base outside of Texas.  Shortly after returning to TX, he entered the petro-chemical industry, a decision that would ultimately lead to him starting his own business, Time Scale Planning, operating globally.
Known by many as a multi-genre movie enthusiast, it was rumored that Gary had reached the end of both the Netflix and Amazon Prime library as the family had been unable to identify a single movie Gary had not seen since 2010.  Legend has it that Gary’s extensive knowledge of Spaghetti Western films got the attention of director, Sergio Leone, who secretly requested Gary’s advice prior the filming of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; Man with No Name; and Once Upon a Time in the West. It is also rumored that Sergio took Gary’s guidance and cast Clint Eastwood to take the lead role in all 3 films.
A true connoisseur of southern food, Gary was a firm believer that Frito pie was best served in a Frito Pie snack bag, covered in a mountain of chili (with beans), cheddar cheese, white onions and jalapenos.  Brisket was best cooked with an ice-cold Shiner Bock in hand and in his backyard smoker since his ranch gave him access to the world’s finest mesquite wood. In a recent visit to a fine dining establishment outside Washington DC, he developed a strong opinion that no restaurant should be allowed to earn a Michelin rating unless they served cold beer, fried mushrooms, and chicken fried steak with white gravy. Highly in-tune with Farmin’ and Ranchin’ fashion trends, Gary could often be seen wearing his signature overalls, a look that has alternated between fad and classic for decades, but never falling out of style.  Although he did not live as long as we would’ve wanted, his life was exceptional, traveling the world exploring Germany, India, Japan, Australia and Aruba, to name a few.  World-renowned for his exceptional story telling ability, you could be 100% certain that all his stories were at least partially true.  He loved his family, Long John Silvers, all his cows, and fried okra.  He disliked lazy people, Weesatch trees, shrimp and Democrats (except his daughter-in-law, Sherry). He encouraged his children to live bold and daring lives, always reminding them, “If you ever fall down in life, never forget you can always come home to dust yourself off before you get back up and try again.”
Before passing, Gary paved a 67-year path of laughter, generosity, compassion and wisdom.  He will be desperately missed by his wife Becky, who will defiantly hire a contractor to finish construction on the house Gary has been ‘finishing’ for over 30 years; his daughter Angel, who has been impossible to be married to since Gary taught her “don’t put up with any sh!+ from a man.”; his son Todd, who rebelliously finishes his home improvement projects in a reasonable period of time; and William who is determined to live out his lifelong dream of bootlegging TX whiskey.  He is also survived by his grandchildren (Kaelin, Kai, Alana, Nicholas, Eli, Tobin & Tesla) who have vowed to avenge his death; his daughters-in-law (Julie & Sherry) and son-in-law (Steve) who have promised to try and keep his children out of prison; his mother, Beatrice, sister (Nita), and brothers (Gaylon and Douglas) who were lucky enough to know him and love him first.
A viewing will be held on April 26, 2022 from 2:00-6:00 pm at Sawyer-George Funeral Home in Corpus Christi, TX.  Memorial Services will be held on April 30, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Marble Falls, TX with Mr. James Crawford officiating. The burial at Marble Falls Cemetery will immediately follow the service.  For any thieves who may be considering a visit to the house while we are at the services, we have left a high-powered electric fence, a professional assassin and a shih-tzu with a bad attitude at home to welcome you.

Juan A. Rangel - November 04, 1944 - April 06, 2022

Departed: 04/06/2022 (Corpus Christi)
Obituary Preview: Juan Ayala Rangel passed away on April 6, 2022 at the age of 77 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He battled chronic illnesses since the second Clinton Administration and now his watch had ended. He entered this world on November 4, 1944 to parents who were fundamentally unable to appreciate the singular gift and challenge they’d been given. His childhood was one of unimaginable poverty, abandonment, and struggle. He survived and spent his adult life giving his children and their children the skills they would need to survive no matter what Juan met the love of his life, Maria, when they were both growing up in Donna, Texas. They attended Donna High School and married shortly before he shipped out for his tour of duty in Vietnam. His marriage finally offered him a family that appreciated and loved and respected him as he should have been from the start. In Vietnam he met his brother Esequiel and they were close until his brother was called home to his rest several years ago. Together, Juan and Maria had four children: San Juanita, Julia, Emiliano Benito, and Joaquin Jose, and adopted another: Delisha. He was the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren: Joshua, Jacob, Lina, Gabe, J Alex, Garrett, Ivan, Chris, Matt, Joseph, and Candece. His daughter Julia is married to Luis. His son Joaquin is married to Claire and they brought Jacob, Caleb, and Carson into his family. Emiliano and his wife Kristie brought him 2 great-grandchildren: Beau and Bella. He was a husband who loved his wife with all his heart and soul. He was a patriarch who would have fought his way through Hell and back for the children in his family. He was a warrior who stepped up to perform his duty for a country that took its sweet time honoring him. In another world or another time, he would have been recognized as a scholar: between raising and supporting his family he never got the chance to get a college degree, but he never stopped learning. Juan passed his love of learning to his family and pushed and encouraged all his children and grandchildren to become educated in their chosen fields, however diverse they might be, however little he might understand them. He loved fishing, watching football, and eating good food, preferably with family. Juan is survived and mourned by his wife and all their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Despite the pain we feel at his passing, we take comfort knowing that he is finally free of the pain that had wracked his body for years. There will be a Family & Friends viewing at Sawyer George Funeral Home on April 12th at 5pm, followed by a Rosary at 6:30pm. We will celebrate the Rite of Christian Burial on April 13th at 12:30pm, to be followed by burial at Coastal Ben State Veterans Cemetery at 2pm.

Lillian McClure - May 20, 1923 - March 17, 2022

Departed: 03/17/2022 (Corpus Christi)
Obituary Preview: Preceded by: Husband Arthur McClure, Jr, Son Don McClure, Daughter-in-law Dorcyle McClure, Parents Louis & Meta Kott; Brothers: Edward (Gertrude), Victor (Lucille); Sisters: Louise Kott, Dora (Elgin) Schneider, Sidonie (Jack) Evers, Esther (Eugene) Kolmeier.
Survived by: Son Chris (Donna) McClure and Granddaughter Rebecca (Jason) Bryant. And a multitude of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Lillian Virginia Kott McClure (also known as Sis, Aunt Litzie, Mom, the “doll lady” and her favorite Grandma) was born in Fredericksburg, TX on May 20, 1923, the 7th child of Louis and Meta Kott. She grew up surrounded by a large family describing her childhood as wonderful. She remembered watching from the gallery as her parents danced at a Ball in the Nimitz Hotel. She also remembered Main Street in Fredericksburg before it was paved and horse drawn wagons on the streets.
After graduating from High School Lillian attended business college in San Antonio staying with sister Esther and husband, Wilburn Durst. Lillian would go to a boarding house next door to play a piano in the parlor. One Sunday afternoon Lillian was in the middle of “Beautiful Dreamer” when a young resident, named Arthur, came running down the stairs to see who was playing. Arthur and Lillian both said it was love at first sight. During their courtship the U.S. entered WWII and Arthur was drafted into the Navy. That didn’t get in their way. Lillian, accompanied by her mother and sister Louise, took the train to Norman, Oklahoma where Arthur was stationed as an instructor at the Naval Aviation Ordinance School. They were married on Saturday June 19, 1943. No Honeymoon, Arthur only had a 2-day pass. Arthur eventually received orders to join the Pacific Fleet and they were again separated until after the war ended. They would not be separated again until Arthur’s death in 2006. A marriage of 63 years.
Lillian and Arthur had two sons. Don was born in 1952 followed by Chris 5 years later. Lillian was a stay home Mom ensuring the boys were fed, clothed (much of which she sewed), educated and active. She was a Den Mother, Bible School Teacher, Band Booster, Little League Booster, Football Booster and drove the boys & friends to may a UIL competition, church activity and campout. One of Chris’ classmates pointed out that Lillian always put on the best birthday parties. She was also a mentor & confidant to some of her nieces and neighborhood girls in Boerne. And when the bills got a little too high, Lillian would take a job. She worked at Community Savings & Loan, the Boerne Utilities Office and for Authors Fritz and Emilie Toepperwein.
Lillian, the “doll lady”, was an avid doll collector which she attributed to not having a daughter. Although Chris did end up with a “Platoon” of GI Joes. The dining room of her home in Leon Valley looked like a museum as it was filled with display cases full of dolls and accessories. Shirley Temple was everywhere! The hobby became a business as she made bisque & porcelain dolls, doll cloths & furniture and did doll repair.
In 1997 Chris married Donna which gave Lillian a granddaughter, Rebecca. Finally, she had a little girl to play dolls with. They attended some doll conventions together. When Becca had International Day at school and was assigned to represent Japan, Lillian dressed both Becca and her American Girl Doll in matching Kimonos. She said that one of her proudest days was watching Becca marry her love, Jason.
Lillian always remained active. Although accepting the use of a cane she would regularly walk the halls and parking lot of Villa Northwest Assisted Living. She pushed the wheelchairs of other residents and helped out the office staff with paperwork and filing. She even drove up until age 95.
Lillian left this world peacefully on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2022. Her son was at her side holding her hand.

Sharon Denise Lawhon - March 07, 1962 - March 10, 2022

Departed: 03/10/2022 (Corpus Christi)
Obituary Preview: Sharon "Dene" went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 10th, at the age of 60. Dene was born in Robstown Texas on March 7th, 1962 to the late Milus Polk Wright III (Chico) and Barbara (Babs) Wright. She grew up in South Texas, attending St. John's Elementary and graduated from Banquete High School.
Dene worked alongside her sister, Gail, at Country Center in Bluntzer, Texas, eventually managing the store until its closure in 2002. Dene and Randy currently reside in Weimar, Texas where they have acreage and cattle. Her most beloved role of all was loving wife, mother, and Nene. Dene was an angel to everyone she met, never knowing a stranger. Throughout the years she has loved, cooked, and taken care of many friends, always opening her heart and her home.
Dene grew up in South Texas alongside six brothers and sisters. Her love of family is powerful and she will deeply miss her talks with Aunt Harry and her hugs from M.P. She often talked about the fun being with all her siblings - Harriett, M.P., Wayne, Gail, Larry, and Tracy.
Dene and Randy were married on March 14th, 1980 at St. Patrick's Church in San Patricio, Texas. They welcomed their daughter, Heather, in September of that same year. They were blessed with a son, Brody, in May of 1985. The childhood Brody and Heather experienced was full of love, laughter, and so much happiness. Dene and Randy have modeled love and marriage through the highs and lows. The example that was set for their children will live on through both of them.
Dene thought life couldn't get any better until she got a taste of her grandbabies. As you can imagine, her heart grew even bigger as she welcomed Abigail, Brennan, and Ryker. The love their "Nene" has given to them in their time together is so incredible. She has another grandbaby on the way whom we know she is holding first in Heaven as he prepares to debut this coming June. These grandbabies will miss her dearly.
Her mother-in-law, Loretta, has loved and cared for Dene as her own since the passing of her mother. She truly enjoyed her time with Loretta, as well as her sister-in-law, Pam. Dene has so many friends for which she is so grateful - Sissy, Rosa, Tina. There are so many people who are important to Dene. She loved big and she loved hard. To her nieces and nephews, whether it was making pancakes, sitting around a campfire, planning a shower, or celebrating a wedding, she loved every moment with each of you. She loved her Round Rock girls - Judy, Julie, Harry, and Chris.
Faith was Dene's guiding light. She prayed and was a devout Catholic her entire life. She instilled the love of God in her family and there is no doubt that she was greeted with His loving arms. We know Aunt Gail was right behind him and she was embraced by so many loved ones we lost too soon.
The coming days and weeks will be tough. Please look for her in the small things. Always say I love you and cherish every moment with your loved ones.

Can I use social media to share news of a loved one's passing?

Yes, social media can be a convenient way to share news quickly with a large network of people. However, consider also publishing a formal obituary to provide a permanent record of the person's life.

How do I handle condolences and messages from strangers on social media?

You're not obligated to respond to every message or comment. Acknowledge kind words with a simple "thank you" or ignore messages that make you uncomfortable.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

It's okay to take your time and seek help from a trusted friend, family member, or professional counselor. You can also consider delaying the publication of the obituary until you're feeling more emotionally prepared.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes, this is a thoughtful way to honor your loved one's memory and support a cause they cared about. Include details on how donations can be made and where they will be directed.

How do I preserve an online obituary for future generations?

Screenshot or print out the obituary for physical preservation. You can also save it digitally by creating a PDF copy or storing it in cloud storage.

Can I create a digital archive of my loved one's life stories and memories?

Yes! Consider creating a digital scrapbook, blog, or website dedicated to sharing stories, photos, and mementos from your loved one's life.

What if I'm concerned about privacy when publishing an obituary?

Balancing privacy concerns with the desire to share news of your loved one's passing can be challenging. Consider limiting personal details or using initials instead of full names for certain individuals mentioned in the obituary.

Can I publish multiple obituaries for the same person in different locations?

Yes, this is common practice if the person had connections to multiple communities or lived in different areas throughout their life.

How do I handle cultural or religious differences when writing an obituary?

Be respectful of cultural and religious traditions when writing an obituary. Research specific customs and protocols related to death announcements within that community.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

Draft a rough outline with key details and then review it with family members or friends who knew the deceased well. This can help ensure accuracy and inclusiveness.

Can I use an obituary as a way to celebrate my loved one's life rather than just mourning their passing?

Absolutely! An obituary is an opportunity to share stories, memories, and achievements that highlight your loved one's unique spirit and contributions.
