Nancy Ruth Merivirta - January 10, 1931 - May 10, 2024

Departed: 05/10/2024 (Berkley)
Obituary Preview: Nancy Ruth Merivirta was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 10, 1931 to John Austin and Marion Sweeney and passed away on May 10, 2024 at the age of 93. She was the beloved wife of Paul William Merivirta, her husband of nearly 60 years. She is preceded in death by her husband Paul, her sister Barbara and her brother Jack. Nancy is survived by her three children, Cynthia (William) Cederholm, Steven (Candice) Merivirta, and Kurt (Sharon) Merivirta who have been blessed by such caring and loving role models. She was the grandmother of 8 grandchildren ~ Elizabeth, Jessica, Melissa, Austin, Matthew, Cullen, Caitlin and Ethan, and the great grandmother of 13 great grandchildren, with one more on the way.
Family was important to Nancy. She showed her love and support by being involved in their lives. She found time to be a girl scout leader for Cindy, made it to all of Kurt’s baseball games and Steve’s hockey games. Her church family was important as well; she was a Sunday School Teacher and sponsored an immigrant family from church. Amazingly, while raising three children and holding down a job, Nancy went on to acquire an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Reading. She became a beloved fourth grade elementary teacher at Oakridge Elementary in Royal Oak, where she put on an annual production of the Wizard of Oz. It was not uncommon for former students to come back to visit as young adults, often reminiscing about the play. In addition, her love of plays extended to professional productions as well. For many years she enjoyed attending Shakespearian plays at Stratford in Ontario.
In addition to her love of the family dogs, Beau, Bruin and her Belle, and being a Red Wing Hockey fan, Nancy loved music. Music was an important part of her life. From singing as a member of the Southfield Presbyterian church choir, as well as performing solos and duets in church ceremonies, she enjoyed sitting and playing the piano at home. Nancy loved to cook and host holiday family gatherings. Family members looked forward to her standing rib roast and homemade mashed potatoes and gravy. People looked forward to her addictive chocolate chip cookies, and in the summer a slice or two of her raspberry cream pie.
Nancy and Paul traveled multiple times to Europe. Their love for travel was shared and extended to their grandchildren, as each grandchild was offered a high school graduation gift ~ a trip to anywhere in the world they chose. Those trips ranged from Europe, to the Mediterranean, and to Hawaii. Incredible memories were made. Annual Florida trips to Anna Maria Island, since 1966, have become a tradition passed on now to three generations of Merivirtas and Cederholms.
Whether you knew her as a friend, a sister, a mother, an aunt, a grandmother or a great grandmother, everyone knew her as a loving and caring person who made this world a better place.

Robert John Carver, affectionately known as Bobnoxious by those who knew him best, passed away on April 22, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family in Madison Heights. Born in Warren on September 30, 1971, to Rhea and the late Joseph Carver, Bob's larger-than-life presence began to take shape early and left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of crossing his path.
Bob was a devoted husband to his wife, Catherine, for an incredible 30 years, having tied the knot on a beautiful autumn day, November 19, 1994, in Royal Oak. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and an abundance of love. Their journey as a family blossomed with the arrival of their daughter, Samantha Lee Carver, and son, Robert Joseph Carver, who both inherited their father's zest for life and caring spirit.
Later in life, Bob embraced the role of a doting grandfather to his cherished granddaughter, Isabella, and was a loving caretaker to his granddog, Athena. He was a pillar of strength and support for his mother, Rhea Carver, and held fond memories of his late father, Joseph. Bob's bond with his sisters, Deanna Taylor, Denise (Terry) Piotrowski, Rebecca, Rita, and Roxanne Carver, was unbreakable, filled with shared stories and unspoken understandings.
Professionally, Bob was the proud Owner and Operator of Citywide Home Improvement. Known as a "jack of all trades, master of none," he tackled each project with determination and a hint of his characteristic humor. His genuine and friendly nature made him not just a businessman, but a friend to his clients and an integral part of the community.
Bob's colleagues and friends knew him as the life of the party. He never missed an opportunity to tell a joke or entertain, ensuring that family gatherings were memorable events. His love for classic cars often found him tinkering under the hood, sharing tales of bygone eras, and occasionally taking a leisurely drive to reminisce.
An avid outdoorsman, Bob relished the times he could escape to go hunting and fishing. These moments of solitude in nature were a treasured counterbalance to his boisterous social life, offering him a sense of peace and adventure.
Those who knew Bob would describe him in three simple words: loving, friendly, and funny. His ability to connect with people, his unending kindness, and his infectious laughter were his gifts to the world. Bob's legacy is one of joy, compassion, and an enduring reminder to cherish every moment.
As we bid farewell to Robert John Carver, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, a heart that loved without measure, and a soul that has left a lasting impression.
