Steve Rollins - October 25, 1964 - May 16, 2024

Obituary Preview: Flat Rock Community resident, Mr. Steve Rollins was pronounced deceased at 2:13 a.m. Thursday morning May 16, 2024 at the TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center in Antioch where he was admitted Monday afternoon May 13th to the Cardiac Care Intensive Unit suffering from heart failure. Mr. Rollins was 59 years of age.
A graveside service is scheduled for Sunday afternoon May 19th at 1 p.m. with Daniel Mitchell delivering the eulogy. He will be buried beside his Father and Mother in the Rollins family lot in section five at the Ridgewood Cemetery.
The Rollins family will receive friends at the graveside following the 1 p.m. service.
He was born Stephen Talley Rollins at the former McFarland Hospital in Lebanon on October 25, 1964 and was one of five children, a son and four daughters of the late Jeff Talley Rollins who died September 19, 1979 at the age of 66 and his mother, Frances Elizabeth Wright Rollins who just died March 10th of this year at the age of 100.
Mr. Rollins was a recipient of his General Education Degree.
He was saved at the age of 15 on June 10, 1980 and joined the Rome Baptist Church and was baptized by then pastor, Bro. John H. Norman on June 15, 1980.
He was a longtime truck driver for Southern Woodenware and later the Wilson County Farmers Cooperative in Lebanon. After retiring from truck driving, he had worked at the Defeated Creek waste station and later as a bread stocker for Sunbeam Bread at Walmart and Kroger.
Mr. Rollins loved the farm life and all animals and had a fur kitty named Callie Girl, which was very dear to his heart.
Surviving are his three children, Logan McKinney and wife Jennifer of Wesley Chapel, Florida, Katie Kimes and husband Kyle of Estill Springs, Tennessee, Lana Vera and husband Christian of Cowan, Tennessee; four sisters, Bettye Rollins of Lebanon, Lana Rollins Chitwood and husband Stephen of Celina, Diana Rollins of the Flat Rock Community, Alice Rollins Givens and fiancée Kenneth Bennett of the Tuckers Cross Road Community; seven grandchildren, Greyson Kimes, Paxton Kimes, Eliza Vera, Nova Vera, Bryson McKinney, Ryder McKinney and Marilyn Jo McKinney.

Obituary Preview: Ms. Amanda Russell Jackson age 39 of South Carthage was pronounced deceased at the Highpoint Health-Riverview E. R. in Carthage at 2:24 p.m. Tuesday afternoon after being found unresponsive at her father’s Davis Street South home.
Ms. Jackson is at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home where a visitation will be Friday May 17th from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. closing with a prayer. A private service for the family only will be in Section three in the Russell family lot at the Ridgewood Cemetery.
She was one of three children, a daughter and three sons, of John Edward (Johnny) Russell of South Carthage and the late Lee Ann Agee Russell who died at the age of 41 on April 3, 2004 and was born Amanda Lee Russell in Augusta in Richmond, Georgia on December 1, 1984.
Ms. Jackson was preceded in death by an infant son, Logan Gage Jackson and by a brother, John Edward Russell II who died on November 19, 2022 at the age of 35.
Ms. Jackson, a homemaker, was a recipient of her General Education Degree.
Her family attended the Carthage Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving in addition to her father, Johnny, are her two brothers, Joseph Russell and wife Ashley of Carthage, James Davis Russell and wife Cassie of the Walkers Creek Community in Dekalb County.

Obituary Preview: A longtime Carthage business lady, Mrs. Rhonda Michelle Brown Gregory, a homemaker of Hartsville, transitioned to be with her Heavenly Father at 3:13 a.m. Tuesday morning May 14, 2024 at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where she was admitted April 23rd. Rhonda was diagnosed with lupus in 2012 which led to liver failure in 2017.
Sunday afternoon May 17th funeral services are scheduled to be conducted by her pastor, Bro. Jackie Dawson from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Following the 3 p.m. services burial will be in the College Park section at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
The Gregory family will receive friends at Sanderson in Carthage on Saturday afternoon May 16th from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the funeral services at 3 p.m.
Rhonda was born on January 11, 1974 in Nashville and was the daughter Brenda Joyce Hall Brown of the Tanglewood Community and the late Fred Terry Brown who died at the age of 68 on August 21, 2012.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Will Denney who died at birth on February 11, 2023.
Rhonda was a member of the 1992 graduating class at Smith County High School. She was a member of the Beta club her senior year, the French Club her freshman and sophomore years, a member of Students Against Drunk Driving, was in the science and mathematics classes her junior and senior years, was in the Future Business Leaders of America class, was in the school chorus her junior year and was in the home economics class her freshman year.
After receiving her Associates Degree she was licensed by the State of Tennessee as a Para-Legal.
At the home of her Father she was united in marriage to Hartsville native Rex Martin Gregory on December 29, 1998. The ceremony was performed by then Smith County Clerk, Jimmy Norris.
In 1983 her Mother purchased the G. & R Restaurant on Highway 25 in Carthage from Donald and Mavis Alexander and renamed it Brenda’s Restaurant and Brenda, along with Rhonda and later her granddaughter Bren operated the establishment successfully until selling the establishment on March 3, 2017.
Rhonda had a perpetual smile and when anyone entered the restaurant as a customer they were treated and respected as part of their family and left as a friend.
Rhonda attended the Carthage Full Gospel Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband Rex of over twenty five years and her mother, Brenda, is a daughter, Bren Denney and husband Austin of the Rome Community; son, Bryce Gregory of Hartsville; two step sons, Josh Gregory and wife Michelle of Gordonsville, Jacob Gregory and wife Jacqueline of Gladeville; six grandchildren, Tyler Bivens, Angel Gregory, Travis Gregory, Jasen Gregory, Winston Denney, and Wylie Denney and her grandmother, Gertrude Burnett, more affectingly known by everyone as Granny, of the Tanglewood Community.

Arnold Rich - August 09, 1958 - May 13, 2024

Obituary Preview: The longtime Pleasant Shade District 8 Fire Chief, Mr. Arnold Rich, was pronounced deceased at the age of 65 at his Sloan Branch home at 9:50 a.m. Monday morning May 13, 2024 by Gentiva Hospice of Livingston who had been lovingly assisting the Rich family with Arnolds care. He transitioned to his heavenly home at 7:45 a.m. with his wife of over forty four years at his bedside singing and reading to him the 23rd Psalm, after he had gallantly endured an eight-year battle with multiple myeloma with which he was diagnosed in September of 2016.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday afternoon, May 18th at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church Gordonsville. His son-in-law, Bro. Ryan Rogers and Bro. Joe West will officiate. Interment in the Gordonsville Cemetery will follow with his Pastor, Bro. Brandon Patton officiating.
Visitation at the First Baptist Church Gordonsville will be on Saturday only from 9:00 AM until 2:45 PM with services to follow at 3:00 PM.
He was born Joseph Arnold Rich at the former Petty Green Clinic in Carthage on August 9, 1958 and was the eldest of four children, three sons and a daughter of the late Joseph Taylor “Joe” Rich who died at the age of 86 on April 14, 2022 and Melba Sue Brooks Rich who died at the age of 79 on April 18, 2020.
In his earlier years, he worked at the family-owned country store, Rich Grocery in the Pleasant Shade Community.
He was a 1976 graduate of Smith County High School where he majored in agriculture and mathematics, and was in the V. I. C. A. Club his senior year and the Pep Club his freshman year.
Upon graduation, he went to work for his father at Rich Lumber Company where he served as sawmill foreman until his retirement in 2020.
While working at the mill, he served on the Pleasant Shade Volunteer Fire Department from 1989 until his retirement in 2019 due to his cancer. He served as the fire chief from 2006 until 2019.
Also, from 1989 through 2022, he worked for Century 21, Carmen Real Estate, and Poindexter Realty as an affiliate agent. During his retirement, he enjoyed working part time with his brothers and nephew at family-owned Macon Lumber Company driving a loader.
In October of 1978, he met his soulmate, Gordonsville native, the former Deborah Kay (Debbie) Bush, and they were united in marriage on December 30, 1979 at First Baptist Church Gordonsville by the late Eld. J. C. Austin.
Their passion was going to southern gospel singing concerts and going to the movies. Together,they have two daughters: Dr. Amy Leigh Rich Rogers, PhD and husband Ryan of South Carthage, Dr. JoBeth Rich McCoy and husband Dustin, of Watertown. His pride and joys were his two grandchildren, Janie Mai Rogers and Colin McCoy who called him “Grandpa.”
Arnold’s values were strong when serving the Lord. He was saved in a revival at the Pleasant Shade Upper Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1974 and became an active deacon in that church. In 2001, his family moved their membership to First Baptist Church Gordonsville where he served as a deacon from 2022 to present.
He enjoyed teaching the young children in RAs. He and Debbie loved to serve the Lord by working in the children’s department, which is now known as Kingdom Kids. His vision was to have a safe place for children of all ages to play at First Baptist Gordonsville.
Surviving in addition to his wife and two daughters are his three siblings, a sister, Jocella Rich Halliburton and husband Todd, two brothers, Jerry Rich and wife Becky all of the Pleasant Shade Community, Jackie Rich and wife Sherry of Red Boiling Springs. Also, he loved his second family, the Bushes, and all of his nieces and nephews.

Maude Comstock - June 30, 1921 - May 11, 2024

Obituary Preview: A Defeated Creek Community Centenarian departed this life into the arms of the Heavenly Angels at the age of 102 with her family at her bedside on Saturday morning May 11, 2024 at 10:50 a.m. at the home of her son and daughter-in-law who had lovingly seen to her every need in their home for the past ten years.
Mrs. Maude Comstock was pronounced deceased at 11:56 a.m. by Gentiva Hospice of Livingston who had been loving assisting the family with her care in her final days on earth.
Bro. Bryan Bratcher will officiate at the 11 a.m. Wednesday morning funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow beside her husband in Section five at the Ridgewood Cemetery in Carthage.
The Comstock family will receive friends on Tuesday May 14th from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Wednesday May 15th from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Sanderson in Carthage.
She was the last surviving of seven children, five daughters and two sons of the late George Robert “Mr. Bob” Silcox who died February 24, 1988 at the age of 88 and Mary Ellen Scott Silcox who died July 25, 1993 at the age of 91 and was born Maudie Marie Silcox in the Butlers Landing Community of Clay County on June 30, 1921.
Mrs. Comstock was preceded in death by two daughters, Lois Virginia Silcox Kent who died February 1, 2004 at the age of 66, Bessie Marie Comstock Draper who died at the age of 81 on July 14, 2020 and by her son, Bobby Comstock who died as the result of a tractor accident on the family farm at the age of 53 on September 18, 1994.
Her five siblings preceding her in death were William James Silcox who died October 19, 2015 at the age of 74, Stella Silcox Bane who died June 12, 2016 at the age of 74, Elizabeth Virginia Silcox Brown who died October 4, 2020 at the age of 89 and a set of twins, Billy Carmen and Mary Ellen Silcox who died at birth.
Mrs. Comstock was united in marriage to Lock Seven Community native Dewey Birdine Comstock who died at the age of 84 on October 25, 1996 following over 61 years of marriage. They were united in marriage by a Justice of the Peace on Hugh West Hill in the Turkey Creek Community.
Mrs. Comstock was a homemaker who loved the Lord with all of her being and was a member of the Carthage Church of God, but attended the Kempville Chapel Old Time Methodist Church with her family.
She is survived by her only surviving child, a son, Eddie Comstock and wife Linda Bennett Comstock of the Defeated Creek Community; daughter-in-law, Ann Comstock-Deebanks of the Four Way Inn Community; eighteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: Ms. Donna Pope, a devoted Christian woman of Gordonsville who touched the lives of all who knew her, departed this life surrounded by her family on Saturday morning May 11, 2024 at 11:56 a.m. following a valiant four & one/half year battle with cancer, She was 69 years of age.
Funeral services to celebrate her life will be conducted from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home and will be conducted on Thursday morning May 16th with her pastor Eld. Dave Silcox officiating. Burial will follow in the Pope Family lot in Section three at the Ridgewood Cemetery in Carthage.
The family will receive friends at Sanderson in Carthage on Wednesday May 15th from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again on Thursday after 9 a.m. until the celebration of life at 11 a.m.
She was born Donna Sue Pope at the former Petty-Green Clinic in Carthage on July 18, 1954 and was one of six children born to the late John Fisher Pope who died January 30, 1985 at the age of 65 and Jewel Beatrice Givens Pope who died July 13, 2011 at the age of 93.
Also proceeding her in death were two siblings, Joe Bridges Pope who died in 1941 and Patricia Diane Pope who died in 1950.
Ms. Pope was a member of the 1971 graduating class at Smith County High School where she majored in home economics and business administration. She was a member of the pep club all four years and the Spanish Club her junior year. The statement made of her in the annual by the Owl staff was; “A woman that will enjoy a quiet conscience must lead a quiet life”
.
Following her graduation she attended the Hartsville Area Vocational School and later began her career at Powell-Meadows Insurance Company in Carthage where her career in the insurance industry as a licensed insurance agent spanned forty three years before retiring December 15, 2016.
Donna was a beacon of love, faith, and strength to her family and friends. Her unwavering faith in God and her deep rooted Christian values guided her through life's challenges, including her courageous battle with cancer.
She was saved at the age of 8 on Sunday night September 2, 1962 under the pastorate of the late Eld. Phocian Gibbs who also baptized her into the full fellowship of the South Carthage Missionary Baptist Church at Pipers Ford in South Carthage at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon September 9, 1962, where she remained a dedicated member until the Lord called her home.
She will be remembered for her kind heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering faith. She possessed a special way of making everyone feel loved and cherished, and her mere presence brought comfort and joy to those around her. Her wisdom, grace, and compassion were an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In addition to her faith, Donna had a passion for dancing, making crafts, working jigsaw puzzles, reading books, and watching the Hallmark channel. She found joy in spending time with her family, and her enthusiasm was contagious to all who shared her company.
Surviving is a daughter, Angelique Montgomery and husband Paul of Gordonsville, her son, Will Dennis and wife Stephanie Byrd Dennis of the Templow Community; three grandchildren, Lauren Montgomery Murphy and husband Josh of Algood, Westin and Trentin Dennis both of the Templow Community; three sisters, Linda Pope of Gallatin, Laura Pope Gibbs and husband Jimmy of Carthage, Rita Pope Lee and husband Phillip of the Castalian Springs Community.
Her legacy of love, faith, and strength under adverse circumstances, will live on in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to know her. To know Donna was to love Donna.

Frank Woodard - March 12, 1950 - May 08, 2024

Obituary Preview: Longtime Smith County Commissioner, Mr. Frank Woodard of the Conditt Hollow Community, died at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday evening May 8, 2024 at the Lebanon Center for Rehabilitation and Healing where he was admitted April 5th suffering from a malignant neoplasm of the brain. Mr. Woodard was 74.
His cousin, Bro. Jackie Dillehay and his pastor, Bro. Lanny Thomas will officiate at the 1 p.m. Monday afternoon May 13th funeral services from the Carthage Capel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow beside his beloved wife, Polly, in section five at the Ridgewood Cemetery in Carthage.
There will be Masonic Chapel Services at 7 p.m. Sunday evening by the Carthage Benevolent Lodge # 14.
The family will receive friends at Sanderson in Carthage on Sunday from 4 p.m. until the Masonic Chapel Service at 7 p.m. and again on Monday from 11 a.m. until the services at 1 p.m.
Mr. Woodard was the eldest of four sons born to the late George Thaxton “Shack” Woodard who died January 7, 1985 at the age of 64 and Hildegard Kaindl Woodard who died May 3, 1978 at the age of 58 and was born Frank Eldon Woodard at the former McFarland Hospital in Lebanon on March 12, 1950.
The brother born after Frank was James Ward Woodard, who died as a result of cancer at his Pea Ridge Community home on April 9, 2022 at the age of 69.
On July 3, 1970 Mr. Woodard was united in marriage at the Elmwood United Methodist Church Parsonage by then pastor, the late Bro. Sammy Cherry, to Lafayette native, the former Polly Ann Trent. She preceded him in death on July 4, 2013 one day after the Woodard’s forty third anniversary.
Mr. Woodard was a 1968 graduate at Smith County High School where he majored in building trades. His freshman and sophomore years he was in the agriculture classes under then vo-ag teacher, Nate Bastian, and his senior year he was a member of the Pep Club.
It was stated in the “68 Owl” annual about him to: “Push on, keep moving”, and that he did throughout his adult life.
Mr. Woodard was a longtime employee of the Ross Gear Division of the T. R. W. Company in Lebanon and was a a self-employed tree trimmer and concrete mason. He also assisted his brother James in his roofing business.
Mr. Woodard ably served as a Commissioner representing the Elmwood-Chestnut Mound residents and perhaps was the most conservative member of the court and was instrumental, through his efforts and persistence, in bringing the Dollar General Store to the Elmwood Community.
Mr. Woodard was a member of the Carthage Benevolent Lodge #14 of Free and Accepted Masons.
He is survived by his daughter Sandie Woodard Buck and her husband Douglas of the Hillsboro Community in Coffee County, Tennessee; son, Bryan Woodard and wife Jennifer of Athens, Alabama; and by two brothers, Jerry Woodard, Gary Woodard and wife Faye, all of the Elmwood Community; eight grandchildren, Sarah Downs and husband Ryan, Caleb Buck, Aaron Buck, Anna-Charlotte Buck, Phoebe Buck, Noah Buck, Bryana Brown and Jordan Holmes; two great- grandchildren Henry and Jack Eldon Downs. Burial will follow in the Hackett family lot at the Sanderson Cemetery in the Pleasant Shade Community with Eld. Gerald Ragland officiating.
She was born Marilyn Georgiana Jenkins in Nashville on June 26, 1948 and was one of three children, a daughter and two sons, of the late George Delbert Jenkins and Alma Madeline Smith Jenkins and her grandmother who raised her, Ola Mae Smith.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, twins Bill and Jackie Jenkins.
Mrs. Hackett was a 1966 graduate of Macon County High School and received her Associates of Arts degree in Business Administration from Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin.
At the Pleasant Shade Upper Cumberland Presbyterian Church, she was united in marriage to Pleasant Shade native and former Tennessee State Trooper Hughie Hackett. The wedding ceremony was performed by then church pastor, Eld. Herman “Jake” Collins on August 9, 2003.
Mrs. Hackett retired in 2009 as a professional staffing consultant and later did consulting work for H. G. Staffing.
She was a member of the Pleasant Shade Upper Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband Hughie of almost twenty one years is her daughter, Michelle Nichols and Liz Charak of Greer, South Carolina; three step sons, Brian Hackett and wife Ashlee of Carthage, Joe Hackett and wife Ashleigh of Joplin, Missouri, Ken Hackett and wife Ashley of the Hillsboro Community in Coffee County; three grandchildren, Piper Hackett, Harrison Hackett, and Charlotte Hackett.

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Dean Sanders, a homemaker of the Elmwood Community, departed her earthly journey at 9:30 p.m. Saturday evening May 4th, at the Smith County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage with her son and two nieces by her bedside. The 83 year old Mrs. Sanders had been residing at the facility since being admitted April 2nd from her home at the Pavilion in South Carthage and was pronounced deceased at 12:05 a.m. Sunday morning May 5, 2024..
Mrs. Sanders’s pastor, Eld. Stephen Farley Brooks assisted by her former pastor, Eld. Rickey Hall, will officiate at the 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon May 8th funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow between her husband and son in the Sanders family lot in the Garden of Gethsemane at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
She was one of three children, a daughter and two sons, of the late Joe Lee Harpe who died November 12, 1994 at the age of 81 and Amelia Easter Thompson Harpe Hunter Henry who died September 2, 2004 at the age of 87 and was born Melba Dean Harpe in South Carthage on February 28, 1941.
Two brothers, Phillip Harpe and Kenneth Harpe preceded her in death.
Mrs. Sanders was a 1959 graduate of Smith County High School. There she majored in Home Economics, was a member of the Beta Club her junior year and in her freshman and sophomore years was a class officer, a member of the Latin Club and in the Smith County High School Marching Band.
The statement made of her in the “59 senior annual was: “Love’s too precious to be lost”.
She was saved at the age of 20 in 1961 under the preaching of Eld. Phocian Gibbs and was baptized at Pipers Ford in the Caney Fork River by Eld. Walter Deweese and was baptized into the full fellowship of the South Carthage Missionary Baptist Church.
On December 20, 1958 at the home of the late Eld. Phocian Gibbs, she was united in marriage to South Carthage native J. T. Sanders who preceded her in death on March 31, 2023 at the age of 85 following over sixty four years of marriage.
She transferred her membership by letter to the North Gordonsville Missionary Baptist church where she remained a faithful member until her death.
Mr. and Mrs. Sanders were preceded in death by one of their two sons, J. T. “Jay” Sanders Jr. who died at the age of 53 on June 4, 2021.
Mrs. Sanders was a former teacher’s aide at the former South Carthage Elementary School, was employed for several years at the former Carthage Shirt Corporation and formerly was employed by the former Ligon Tax Service on the square in Carthage.
Surviving is her son, Chuck Sanders of the Elmwood Community; four grandchildren, Trevor Logan Sanders and wife Allison, where Trevor is on duty assignment with the United States Navy out of Virginia, Maggie Rose Sanders of Lebanon, Anna Kate Sanders of Carthage, and Miranda Sanders of Lewisburg. She was born Vickie Rhea Mitchell in Nashville on November 14, 1957 and was one of two children, a son and a daughter, of Jane Ann Neeley Mitchell and the late Billy Ray Mitchell.
Mrs. Clay was a 1975 graduate of East High School in Nashville.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jack David Clay.
She was of the United Methodist faith.

She was pronounced deceased at 1:12 a.m. Wednesday morning May 1, 2024 by Gentiva Hospice of Livingston who had been assisting the family with her care in her final days.
Mrs. Fisher’s son, Pastor Scott Nesbitt assisted by Eld. Michael Nesbitt will officiate at the 1 p.m. Friday afternoon May 3rd funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Fisher Family Cemetery in the Hiwassee Community with a nephew, Eld. Anthony Dixon officiating.
The Fisher family will receive friends on Thursday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again on Friday after 10 a.m. at Sanderson in Carthage.
Born Jennis Sue Harp in the Wilmore Hollow Community of Macon County on June 19, 1946, she was one of ten children of the late Ernest Harp who died at the age of 84 on October 13, 1979 and one of three children of Nora Blossom Shrum Harp who died at the age of 90 on March 15, 2000.
Mrs. Fisher was preceded in death by her seven half siblings, James Louis Harp who died December 25, 2004 at the age of 77, Naomi Frances Harp Shoulders who died October 4, 2006 at the age of 78, John Henry “J. D.” Harp who died February 21, 1994 at the age of 64, J. B. Harp who died August 11, 1918 at 1 year of age, Flossie Harp who died December 4, 1918 at the age of 1 month, Opal-Olene Harp who died at the age of 10 on December 26, 1930 and Annie Mai Harp Gann who died May 8, 1986 at the age of 64.
In the front yard on the Fisher Family farm in the Hiwassee Community, she was united in marriage to Roger Glenn Fisher on April 17, 1992 with the ceremony being performed by the late Eld. J. C. Austin.
Mrs. Fisher was a recipient of her General Education Degree.
She was saved at the age of 18 in 1965 and at the time of her death was a member of the Providence Community Church in Trousdale County, which is pastored by her son Scott.
Mrs. Fisher had unconditional love for all of her family and was an easy lady to get to know and make friends with. She was adored and respected by all of her family and friends.

Obituary Preview: A 67 year old Rome Community housewife, Mrs. Karen Smithwick Moore, died peacefully Thursday morning April 25, 2024 at 9:45 a.m. at the Smith County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage where she had been receiving therapy since April 11th.
Prior to that she had been a resident of The Pavilion Memory Care unit in South Carthage suffering from dementia.
Mrs. Moore was at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home and had requested to be cremated. That was performed at the Cumberland Family Services in Algood and her cremains will be on her parent’s lot at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Lebanon. No services are planned at this time.
She was one of two daughters born in Lebanon to the late Thomas R. Smithwick who died at the age of 56 on November 12, 1983 and the late Thelma Louise Harris Smithwick who died at the age of 82 on March 3, 2016.
Her sister, Brenda Smithwick Midgett, died March 19, 2023 at the age of 71.
Mrs. Moore was a 1975 graduate of Lebanon High School and attended Middle Tennessee State University.
She was former co-owner of the Cook-Berry Dental Lab in Memphis and before retirement was an assistant manager of the private Southwind Golf Course in Memphis, which is a course that is on the Professional Golf Association tour and also hosts the Fed-Ex St. Jude Invitational tournament.
On November 15, 1994 she was united in marriage in Lebanon, by the then Clerk Jimmy Carter Martin to Rome Community resident and retired Tennessee State Trooper John Patterson “Johnny” Moore Jr.
Surviving in addition to her husband is an aunt, Dorothy Smith of Hermitage, uncle, Jim Harris of Melbourne, Florida, nephew, Brian Ferrell of Lebanon; five step-children, Amanda Wood and husband Tripp of Charlotte, North Carolina, Melissa Ellis and John Moore III both of Spring City, Tennessee, Sadie Moore of Carthage, and Jerry Moore and wife Jenny of the Rome Community.

The Brown family will receive friends at Sanderson in Carthage on Wednesday afternoon April 24th from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the 1 p.m. services.
She was born Jeanie Lee Harris at the former McFarland Hospital in Lebanon on May 2, 1953 and was one of three daughters and three sons of the late Johnnie Ray Harris who died November 25, 1959 at the age of 49 and Martha Louise Summers Harris who died April 26, 1982 at the age of 57 and the children were reared in the Turkey Creek Community and her father was the owner and operated the Carthage Pool Hall on Third Avenue East next to Carter Hardware which later burned after becoming the home of Wilburn’s Bakery.
She was united in marriage to a Putnam County native, Jerry Danny Brown, who was reared on Petty Ridge. The ceremony was performed at the Smith County Clerk's Office by the then clerk Jimmy Norris on July 21, 1973.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Jackie Reed Harris, who died February 6, 2005.
Mrs. Brown was one of the most jovial ladies you would ever come in contact with and had a sense of humor that was unequaled by anyone we ever met. Jeanie had a way of making others laugh and never left anyone without a smile. She has left behind countless memories to those she has met filled with laughter and antics.
Mrs. Brown’s favorite things in life were her Family and her Church.
She loved collecting red birds, working puzzles, flowers, and reminiscing about all the joyous times in her life through stories.
She spent many years as a caregiver and sitter for many residents in Smith County and could always be counted on to make them happy and provide unparalleled care.
She was saved in October of 1982 at the Carthage Church of God of Prophecy and remained a faithful member there as long as she was able to attend and where her heart remained until her passing into the heavenly abode.
Surviving in addition to her husband Jerry of almost fifty one years is a daughter, Angie Brown Vaden and husband Eric of the Pea Ridge Community; the three sons, Jerry Brown also of the Pea Ridge Community, Jimmy Brown and wife Erin of the Conditt Hollow Community, Pastor Johnny Ray Brown associate pastor of the Carthage Full Gospel Church and his wife Rebecca Dawson Brown, who resides in the Riddleton Community; three surviving sisters, Joyce Harris Bane and husband Carl of South Carthage, Peggy Harris of Gordonsville, Diane Gill of South Carthage; two surviving brothers, Ricky Harris and wife Lisa Coffee Harris of the Riddleton Community, James Robert Harris of Carthage; nineteen grandchildren and six great-greatgrandchildren.

Joe Halliburton - June 23, 1941 - April 21, 2024

Obituary Preview: Mr. Joe Halliburton age 82 of the Defeated Creek Community died with his two sons at his bedside at the Cookeville Regional Medical Center at 7:41 a.m. on Sunday morning April 21, 2024 where he was admitted at 2:40 p.m. Friday afternoon from the Riverview Regional Medical Center E. R. in Carthage suffering from heart complications.
A public graveside service and interment for family and friends will be conducted Tuesday afternoon April 23rd at 1 p.m. from the Patterson Cemetery in the Russell Hill Community. The family will have a private viewing at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home.
Mr. Halliburton was born in the Buffalo Community of Smith County on June 23, 1941 and was one of three children, two sons and a daughter, of the late Horris Bradford Halliburton who died at the age of 60 on June 25, 1980 and Reba Florence Shepherd Halliburton who died at the age of 52 on October 28, 1971.
A much beloved brother, with him he talked almost daily, Phil Halliburton, died September 29, 2021 at the age of 75.
Mr. Halliburton was saved at the age of 15 and was baptized into the full fellowship of the Cornwells Chapel Missionary Baptist at Defeated Creek.
He was a 1959 graduate at Smith County High School. While a student there he took agriculture and was the class treasurer his freshman year, was a member of the science and audio-Visual Club and his junior year he was a member of the Beta Club.
The statement made of him in the “59” Owl annual was; “Do wrong to none”.
At the Macon County home of the late Eld. Arnett Gregory, he was united in marriage on August 18, 1962 to Russell Hill Community native, the former Carolyn C. Hesson, who is a retired bank teller.
After retirement from the Avco Corporation in Nashville in 2011 with over thirty years of service as an assembler, he spent most of his time loafing at Powell’s Tire Store or Woodard Brothers where he enjoyed eating cheese and bologna.
For the past couple of years he spent most of his time in his garage shop behind the house listening to 99.7 radio.
He was greatly grieved over the death of his beloved sheltie dog, Josie, and after her death he adopted some community cats.
Nothing gave him more rest and relaxation than his pipe and a good pack of tobacco and reminiscing about his childhood in the Beasley Hollow on the family farm, which he also owns.
Surviving in addition to his wife Carolyn of over sixty one years are their two sons, Michael Joe Halliburton and wife Connie Turner Halliburton and their two children, Lacey Williams and husband Russ, Bradford Halliburton and wife Haley all of the Hickman Community; Mitchell Halliburton and wife Kerri Kemp Halliburton and their sons, Addison Halliburton and fiancée Cayce Forrester of South Carthage, Levi Halliburton of the Defeated Creek Community; four great-grandchildren, Harper and Hadley Williams, Huck and Hollyn Halliburton all of the Hickman Community.

Born Margaret Marie Bellar in the Club Springs Community on January 16, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Henry Braden Bellar who died December 10, 1981 at the age of 81 and Mamie Harris Bellar who died May 16, 1991 at the age of 91.
Mr. and Mrs. Nixon were preceded in death by an infant daughter, Teresa Ann Nixon who died at McFarland Hospital in Lebanon at the age of 3days.
She was the widow of Club Springs Community native, the late James Luther “Jim” Nixon, who was a longtime transport driver for Mixon-Nollner Oil Company in South Carthage. The ceremony was performed on October 1, 1949 and Jim preceded her in death at the age of 60 on July 1, 1991 following forty one years of marriage.
Mrs. Nixon was a retired employee of the Genesco Corporation in Nashville.
She was a member of the Tulip Grove Baptist Church in Hermitage.

On Saturday April 27th his remains were transferred by Southwest Airline from BNA in Nashville to Midway Airport in Chicago, Illinois to the Kosary Funeral Home in Evergreen, Illinois for funeral services to be conducted on Tuesday April 29th at 3 p.m. and interment will be private for the family. Mr. Balicki was born Theodore John Balicki Sr. in Chicago in Cook County Illinois on January 16, 1943 and was the son of the late Theodore Balicki who died on July 25, 1945 at the age of 37 and Caroline Bres Balicki who died on January 26, 2002 at the age of 90
.
Mr. Balicki was a 1961 graduate of Lindbloom Math and Science Academy in Chicago.
In Chicago, Illinois on October 17, 1964, he was united in marriage to Chicago native, the former Marilyn Murnane. She peceded Mr. Balicki in death at the age of 73 on August 30, 2017 following almost fifty three years of marriage.
Mr. Balicki, known to friends as “T-Bar”, stated he and his wife desired to live in a quitter place and he found that, when in 1994 he and his wife relocated from Chicago when he purchased the former Gid and Margie Holland Forkum farm on Gladdice Road in the Kempville Community.
Mr. Balicki desired the following statements to be listed in his obituary which exemplified his feelings about his retired life: No worries, No Plans, No Business, Too lazy to work, Too healthy to beg, Too nervous to steal, No money, No future, Ain’s got much, Don’t want much, Ain’t mad at nobody, Waiting for the 1st of the month. Reckon how long he had to study and come up with the joy he experienced since relocating to Smith County.
Mr. Balicki was a retired over the road truck driver for the Marshall Fields Corporation.
He was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving is his son, Ted Balicki Jr. and grandson Ted “Teddy” Balicki both of Nashville; sister, Joan Hamann of Chicago; nephew and nieces, Kyle, Haley and Carley.

A sister, Jo Ann Martin Harris preceded her in death on December 17, 2023 at the age of 64.

Born Margaret Dellia Christian in the Sullivans Bend Community, she was the youngest of seven children, three daughters and four sons, born to the late Melvin Ottis Christian who died at the age of 93 on November 27, 1990 and Vinnie Ethel Overstreet Christian who died at the age of 73 on February 21, 1975.
Five of her six siblings preceded her in death. They were a sister, Carrie Nell Christian Climer who died June 19, 2014 at the age of 94 and all four brothers, James Wade “J. W.” Christian who died January 4, 1966 at the age of 41, Leonard Wilson Christian who died October 3, 1966 at the age of 44, Jesse Julious Christian who died May 2, 2000 at the age of 73 and Oliver Smith “Shorty” Christian who died July 17, 2018 at the age of 88.
At the Smith County Courthouse on April 24, 1954, she was united in marriage to Livingston, Tennessee native George Howard Speck, who preceded her in death at the age of 73 on December 27, 2007. The ceremony was performed by then Smith County Justice of the Peace and Western Auto Store owner, the late H. H. White.
Two sons preceded her in death, Tony Howard Speck who died January 18, 1993 at the age of 37 as the result of a homicide and Marty Ottis Speck who died January 17, 2013 at the age of 47 as the result of a motorcycle accident near his Hogans Creek Community home.
Also preceding her in death was a grandson, Wesley Keith Speck who died October 7, 2008 at the age of 30 of sudden onset heart failure.
Mrs. Speck was of the Pentecostal faith and attended the Emmanuel Church of Christ. She is survived by her two daughters, Connie Speck Bowman and husband Anthony of the Hogans Creek Community and Tammy Speck Smith and husband Tony of Carthage; special beloved sister, Maude Christian Mofield of Lebanon; six grandchildren, Toni Miranda Speck of Hartsville Pike Community, Phyllicia Speck of the Ballinger Road Community, Blake Speck of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Betheney Speck of the Ballinger Road Community, and Audri Bowman and fiancée Payton of the Riddleton Community; one great granddaughter, Luna Petty Pallbearers: Jimmy Christian, Shannon Speck, Tracy, Tommy, Landon, and Nick Mofield,
Daniel Christian, Payton Smith.

Obituary Preview: Miss Carolyn Blair, a homemaker of South Carthage, died at the age of 79 with her sister and friends at her bedside at the Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage where she was admitted April 9, 2024 following a fall which fractured her hip at her Davis Street South home. She was pronounced deceased at 10:45 a.m. Monday morning April 15, 2024.
Miss Blair was at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Graveside services were conducted Tuesday morning at 11 .m. with family friend David Haynes delivering the eulogy. Burial followed beside her parents in the Garden of the Cross at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
One of two daughters and a son of the late Haskell “Hack” Blair who died May 4, 2001 at the age of 85 and Nora Louise Crawford Blair who died March 24, 2004 at the age of 84, she was born Carolyn Jean Blair in Carthage on December 9, 1944.
She was preceded in death by a young brother, James Houston Blair, who was born June 3, 1939 and died May3, 1944, one month before his4th birthday.
Miss Blair was reared on the Houston and Ollie Agee Owens farm in South Carthage which is now Riverpointe Estates.
She was a member of the graduating class of 1962 at the Smith County High School. There she majored in business education and home economics, of which she was a member of the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes and was also in the band and spring festival, both her freshman year. The statement made about her time at S. C. H. S. was; “How dear to my heart were the scenes of my high school days.”
Miss Blair was saved as a teenager and was of the Missionary Baptist faith.
She was a longtime employee of the former W.E. Stephens Manufacturing Co. in Carthage and retired from the former James River Corporation in Gordonsville.
Surviving is her sister, Barbara Blair Tomlinson and husband Gary of Hartsville; nephew, Tim Tomlinson and wife Sylvia and their five children, Hunter, Kassidy, Caroline, Ann Marie, and Haynes all of Hartsville.

Mr. David Mears passed peacefully surrounded by his family at 9 a.m. Monday morning April 15, 2024 at the family farm home. He was pronounced deceased at 10 a.m. by Gentiva Hospice of Livingston who had been lovingly assisting the family with his care.
Mr. Mears was at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home where his family made arrangements for his cremation at Cumberland Family Services in Algood. The family will have a private memorial service at the family farm and he will be interred there.
The sixth of seven children born to the late Aubrey Lee Mears Sr. who died at the age of 64 on September 17, 1984 and Mary Louise Keller Mears Durham who died at the age of 78 on June 24, 2007, he was born David Reynolds Mears in the City of Decherd in Franklin County, Tennessee on August 12, 1958.
Three siblings preceded him in death, two sisters, Ann Mears Powers who died August 9, 2017 at the age of 66 and Betty Jean Mears Meeks who died October 29, 2009 at the age of 62 and a brother, Aubrey Lee Mears Jr. who died August 9, 2020 at the age of 71.
Mr. Mears was a 1976 graduate of Decherd High school.
In the Washburn Community of Grainger County on May 11, 1991, Mr. Mears was united in marriage to the former Dorothy Melissa (Cissy) Lay.
Mr. Mears was saved at an early age and at the time of his death was a member of the Rome Baptist Church.
He was an expert carpet, tile and wood floor installer and did much custom work for high school gym floors having placed school logos and names in center court. He and his sons owned and operated J & J Flooring until his retirement in 2018.
Surviving in addition to his wife Cissy of over thirty three years are their two sons, Johnathan Mears and wife Chelsea, Jared Mears all of the Flatrock Community; grandson, Johnathan Lee Mears II of the Flatrock Community; three sisters, Sandra Mears Kelley and husband Roy, Frances Mears Campbell and husband Larry all of Decherd, Patricia Mears of Lebanon.

Mr. Harper was a 1984 graduate of Smith County High School where he was a member of the Vocational and Industrial Club of America.
At the Carthage Church of God of Prophecy on May 9, 1998, he was united in marriage to the former Mary Kristene Gill.
Mr. Harper was employed as a fabricator/welder for Autokiniton, formerly L & W Engineering of Lebanon with over twenty years of service.
He was a member of the Spring Street Church of God of Prophecy in Lebanon.
Surviving in addition to his wife Mary of almost twenty six years are their three children, John-Allen Harper of South Carthage, Joshua David Harper of the Tanglewood Community and Lizzie Harper also of the Tanglewood Community; granddaughter, Addilyn Harper; brother Bobby Neal Harper and wife Dianna of South Carthage, close friend and co-worker, Tim White of Mount Juliet; fur baby, Oscar Meyer Harper. The Myers family will receive friends at Sanderson in Carthage only on Sunday April 14 from 12 noon until the 3 p.m. services.
Born Eleanor Frances Petty on November 14, 1941 in the Hiwassee Community section of Smith County, she was the youngest of seven children, four daughters and three sons, of the late Zollie S. Petty who died at the age of 75 on February 13, 1975 and Verdie Tyree Petty who died at the age of 71 on August 13, 1970.
Siblings preceding Mrs. Myers in death were Helen Earline Petty Lankford who died December 7, 2003 at the age of 65, Willie Doyle Petty who died July 29, 2016 at the age of 95, Mary Elizabeth Petty Parker who died November 5, 2018 at the age of 89, Ethel Mae Petty Archey who died October 13, 1981 at the age of 50, Zollie Odell Petty who died October 2, 2022 at the age of 89 and Gwin Allen Petty who died September 17, 2014 at the age of 78.
She was united in marriage on March 16, 1959 to Granville native Raymond Young Myers Jr. at the Granville home of his parents, Raymond Young Myers Sr. and Lydia Jane Sutton Myers. Her husband preceded her in death at the age of 65 on December 29, 2003 following forty four years of marriage.
Mrs. Myers was also preceded in death by her daughter, Rhonda Elaine Myers who died at the age of 50 on March 3, 2014 and by her grandson, Koby Alan Johnson who died at the age of two years on June 3, 2006 following his tragic accidental drowning in the family’s backyard swimming pool.
Mrs. Myers attended elementary school in the Elmwood Community through the eighth grade and was awarded her General Education Degree from the Metropolitan Nashville-Davidson County Adult Learning Center.
Being an accomplished seamstress, in her early years of marriage she was employed at both the former Carthage Shirt Corporation and the W. E. Stephens Manufacturing Co. She also spent several decades as a child caregiver from her home caring for and impacting many lives
Mrs. Myers was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving is her son, Randy Myers and wife Paula Petty Myers of South Carthage; six grandchildren, Heather Myers Crowley and husband Jeff of Gordonsville, Joshua Ray Myers and wife Ashlynne of the Popes Hill Community, Tyler Myers of Gordonsville, Lenee Judd and husband Michael of Carthage, Daniel Knight and wife Rachel of Hartsville, Rachel Taylor and husband Thomas of the Defeated Creek Community; nineteen great-grandchildren.
