Arlene Joyce Haarsma - June 01, 1937 - May 11, 2024

Departed: 05/11/2024 (Sanborn)
Obituary Preview: Arlene Joyce Verbrugge was born June 1, 1937, to Katherine and Nick Verbrugge in Matlock Iowa. Born prematurely at only 4 lbs., her dad called her his “little shoe-box baby” because she was so tiny she could fit in a shoebox. But the impact of Arlene’s life and generous heart has been anything but tiny.
Arlene attended Sanborn Christian School and graduated from Western Christian High School in 1955. She attended Midwest Christian Junior College (Dordt University) for 1 1/2 years during its inaugural year of higher education. She left school to start a career at Prins Insurance.
In 1956, she met Andrew Haarsma at a barn square dance, and the two continued correspondence while Andy was out of state until they married on February 11, 1960. The marriage was blessed with two daughters: Vivian Faye and Valerie Kaye.
Arlene loved working on the farm, feeding calves, gardening, canning and baking. There was always extra food and coffee for anyone who stopped by at lunchtime and she was always the first one to show up with a pie or a good word for neighbors in difficult situations. Arlene kept people’s mailboxes full of letters and cards of support to friends who were celebrating, sick, grieving, or sad.
In 1970, Arlene joined the Hartley Vet Clinic as their office manager where she spent almost 50 years (both full-time and part-time) answering phones and two-way radios, advising farmers, dispensing meds, caring for animals and making popcorn for customers.
In the early 1990s, the Haarsmas created Trestle Park, a little slice of Iowa heaven across from their home place. Over the past 30 years, countless friends, family and community members have enjoyed picnicking and relaxing along the old covered bridge, cabins, and chapel. Arlene’s amazing hospitality and welcome smile made everyone feel at home.
In 2006, Arlene and Andy sold their acreage and moved to Sanborn. Together they started their second career - a scrap metal business, cutting up and sorting old metal all over northwest Iowa and selling it to Shine Bros. in Spencer. After health issues in 2021, they retired from the junking business and moved to Prairie View Inn assisted living.
Arlene was a member of the Hartley Christian Reformed Church until it closed in 1991, and then a member of Sanborn First Reformed Church where she led vacation Bible school. Arlene volunteered doing Bible study correspondence with prisoners for over 20 years.
She passed away peacefully on May 11, 2024, surrounded by her family. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Nick and Katherine Verbrugge; step-mother, Stella (Noteboom) Verbrugge; and three siblings: Jim Verbrugge, Myrna Koldenhoven, and Wally Verbrugge.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 64 years, Andy; two daughters: Vivian (Mark) Smith of Mankato, Minnesota; Valerie Green of Salt Lake City, Utah; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Harvey Verbrugge; and many wonderful friends and family members. Her grandchildren and great-grands treasure the memories of roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, learning the art of cat-whispering, playing games (with no time limits) on the dial-up computer, playing the marble game, making homemade ice cream, and learning to drive on gravel roads.
All of us (and the US Postal Service!) will miss the regular handwritten cards of encouragement in our mailboxes. In her final days, Arlene said, “I don’t want to make people sad when I die.” Please celebrate the generous God-given heart of Arlene by loving others unconditionally. Take time each day to encourage someone around you and tell them, “This one is for Arlene”. ~ If you would like to give a memorial gift in Arlene's name, you can donate to ~ Sanborn First Reformed Church (Arlene's home church) Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School (where Vivian and Mark's kids and grandkids have/will attend high school) Sanborn Christian School (Arlene, Viv and Val all attended grade school here) The Vine Institute, Salt Lake City -

Norma Jean Veldboom - July 21, 1939 - May 01, 2024

Departed: 05/01/2024 (Sanborn)
Obituary Preview: Norma Jean (Miller) Veldboom, second daughter of Frank Raymond “Ray” and Ivah Marie (De La Mater) Miller, was born July 21, 1939, on the family farm near Sheldon, IA. She began attending country school at the age of four, with her mother as the teacher. As a young girl, Norma and her family moved to Bonesteel, SD where her father helped electrify rural South Dakota and opened the Miller Electric Store selling electric appliances. She always had wonderful memories of their times in South Dakota. Eventually, the family moved back to Sheldon where she completed her high school education, graduating in 1957.
As a teenager, Norma was employed at the local ice cream drive-in. A young man named Glenn, noticed her walking to work and offered her a ride. They fell in love and were united in marriage on June 22, 1957, at the Methodist Church in Sheldon. At first they lived on an acreage one mile south of Glenn’s home farm north of Hartley, IA. In 1958, they moved to the family farm where Glenn had grown up; being blessed with three children: Randal, Tamra, and Lance.
Norma worked on the farm alongside Glenn. She was known for her large gardens, canning the produce she raised throughout the summers. She had a love for animals and strays that happened upon the farm. Norma also enjoyed camping and traveling with Glenn, and just spending time with her children and grandchildren. They were active members of Farm Bureau and the Republican Party. Once her last child was in college, Norma began working off the farm as a nurses’ aid at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, IA. She then enjoyed many years driving school bus for Area 4 special needs students.
In 1994, Glenn and Norma retired from farming and moved to Hartley. During their retirement, they spent almost 20 summers living in their camper and volunteering at Cutty’s Resort at Lake Okoboji - entertaining their grandkids and teaching many of them to ride bike at Cutty’s. They also took many trips around America, visiting all 50 states with Hawaii and Alaska being highlights.
Norma had a great faith in her Lord and Savior. She once shared that for many years she thought she was a Christian because of her church attendance, but that “the Lord directed my path and showed me that the only way to be a real Christian and have eternal life was to accept Christ as my personal Savior.” Together, Glenn and Norma were obedient and followed the Lord in believer’s baptism in 1972. They were members of Central Avenue Baptist Church in Hartley until it closed in 2006, then joined Maple Grove Church near Peterson, IA. When Norma moved to Grinnell, IA in 2017 after Glenn’s passing, she worshipped at Calvary Baptist.
While Norma’s memory continued to fail her, she could still remember the words to scripture verses and sing along with favorite hymns. In her last years she was well cared for at Mayflower Health Center in Grinnell where on May 1, 2024, she peacefully entered Glory surrounded by her children.
Norma is survived by her children: Randy (Linda) Veldboom of New London, Iowa; Tami (Greg) Hannestad of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Lance (Megan) Veldboom of Grinnell, Iowa; nine beloved grandchildren: Jennifer Veldboom, Ryan (Mollie) Veldboom, Austin (Shannon) Veldboom, Sean (Rachel) MacDonald, Ian MacDonald, Elizabeth (Nathan) Brace, Emmaleah (Tanner) Beam, Naomi Veldboom, and Rebekah Veldboom; six great-grandchildren: Annaka Veldboom, Kemper Veldboom, Isaac and Eliza Joy Brace, Holden Veldboom, Alden MacDonald, and Jonathan Beam; one great-great-grandchild, Lenyx Urias. She also is survived by brother-in-law, Gene Krier; other relatives and friends.
Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, in 2014; her parents; her sister, Darlene Tatsumi Krier; and brother-in-law, Harold Tatsumi.
Norma enjoyed life, she loved God, and was devoted to her family and especially all her work in genealogy, becoming a bridge from the past to the future. She will be dearly missed in this life and we look forward to being reunited with her on heaven’s shore.

Robert George Damman - February 13, 1932 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Sanborn)
Obituary Preview: Robert George “Bob” Damman was born February 13, 1932, on a farm north of Sanborn, Iowa, the first child of George and Jean Damman. His childhood years were spent much like other rural kids – a mix of work, play and school. Being the oldest son, he began helping his Dad around the farm at an early age, taking on chores and responsibilities as he was able.
Bob received his education at Sanborn Community School where he was part of the Bulldog baseball team. After graduating from Sanborn High School in 1950, he worked with his Dad and brother, Glenn, on the family farm.
Tending row crops and livestock was put on hold for a time while Bob served his country with the United States Army. He spent over one year in Korea during his tour of duty which began February of 1953, and ended with his honorable discharge in November of 1954. Having returned home, Bob resumed his agricultural pursuit, thankful to be able to once again, call himself an Iowa farmer.
On December 29, 1963, Bob was united in marriage to Marilyn M. Knock at the American Lutheran Church in Melvin, Iowa. They made their home in Melvin, so Bob commuted daily to manage his ag operation near Sanborn. In later years, fields of corn and soybeans came to include huge, lush vegetable gardens as well. Bob’s life-long passion for agriculture naturally led to a curiosity and understanding of the geological makeup of the region he farmed, the prairies and sloughs that used to be here, as well as the people who were stewards of this land before him. He found the work he did with Dr. Don Peters on the early stages of the Western corn root worm particularly gratifying, as well as the hours spent with his friend, Dr. Elwynn Taylor, tutoring him via phone calls about weather predictions; both men were experts in their field at Iowa State University in Ames. The area around the lakes, and its history, were also of interest to Bob as he and Marilyn enjoyed relaxing near the blue waters of Lake Okoboji whenever they could, spending treasured times there with family and friends, or just hanging out around home.
Bob was a member of the Shriners and belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Sanborn. He was also a proud member of Reed Guthrie Post #470 of the American Legion in Melvin.
On Friday, April 19, 2024, Bob passed from this life to be reunited with loved ones who had gone before: his wife, Marilyn (2022); his parents, George and Jean Damman; sister, Eileen Floyd; sister-in-law, Bonnie Damman; brother-in-law, Bruce Knock; brothers and sisters-in-law: Virgil and Virginia Knock, and Marlo and Wilma Knock; and two nephews.
He is survived by his brother, Glenn Damman of Sanborn, Iowa; sister-in-law, Shirley Knock of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and many dear friends who made his life complete. Memorials given in Bob's name may be directed to the American Lutheran Church in Melvin, Iowa or the Melvin Fire Department

Mary Jean Baker - December 23, 1955 - March 23, 2024

Departed: 03/23/2024 (Sanborn)
Obituary Preview: Mary Jean Baker was born in Tacoma, Washington on December 23, 1955, the daughter of Jeanie (Hardy) Rivers and Robert Coberly, Sr. She spent her youth in Tacoma and received her education at Mount Tahoma High School.
On February 9, 1992, Mary was united in marriage to David Ray Baker in Tacoma, Washington. They made their home there along with children: Shawn, Joe, and Tiffany. While taking care of her growing family and keeping her household running smoothly, Mary was also employed with ABM Cleaning Service, focusing on banks and furniture warehouses.
Since David is originally from Iowa, the family decided to make a change and return to the Midwest, settling down in Sanborn, Iowa. It didn’t really matter what state she was in, Mary’s domain was in the kitchen - you could always find something good to eat at her house! She loved to bake cakes and cookies for her family or to share with the neighbors. However, even a good cook messes up once in a while. Mary’s family still laughs about the Thanksgiving dinner she had worked so hard to prepare; aromatic stuffing, big turkey, cranberry salad, gravy. They were all getting ready to fill their plates when someone realized - there was nothing to put gravy ON…she had forgotten to make the mashed potatoes – and they never let her forget about it. Instead of wringing her hands over it, Mary laughed right along with them.
Murder mysteries or good, old comedy shows were Mary’s entertainment. She had her favorites and made sure she didn’t miss them, yet her greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with her family. Memorable moments were spent just chatting with her kids over a cup of coffee. She was proud of her children, and dearly loved each one of her grandchildren.
On Saturday, March 23, 2024, Mary passed from this life at the age of 68 years. She is once again reunited with her mother, Jeanie Rivers; and her three brothers: Al Rivers, Tommy Rivers, and John Rivers.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 32 years, David Baker of Sanborn, Iowa; her two sons: Shawn and his wife, Allison Rivers of Tacoma, Washington, and Joe and his wife, Jamie Flores of Sanborn, Iowa; her daughter, Tiffany and her husband, Justin Lee also of Sanborn, Iowa; her sister, Shelly Black of La Push, Washington; other relatives and friends.

Obituary Preview: Memorial Tribute
Joshua Daniel “Josh” Cruz-Salzillo, son of Noe and Anna L. (Salzillo) Araiza, was born on Sunday, November 25, 2007, in Mexico City, Mexico. In 2011, four-year-old Josh, along with his family, relocated to the United States, spending the next seven years in the Pacific Northwest at Irrigon, Oregon. Spring and summer were devoted to track and baseball; football and basketball kept him busy through the fall and winter. No matter which sport he was involved in, Josh always gave his best effort on the playing field. While winning was a lot more fun than losing, it was the camaraderie with teammates and the lasting friendships he made at HMS that Josh valued most.

Cody Fitzpatrick Cammann - December 04, 1986 - February 13, 2024

Departed: 02/13/2024 (Sanborn)
Obituary Preview: Cody Fitzpatrick Cammann was born on December 4, 1986, in Bakersfield, CA, the son of Barry F. and Brenda L. (Ackerman) Cammann. He spent his early years in California, moving with his family to Melvin, IA in 1993 and continuing his education here, graduating from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School with the class of 2005. Throughout his high school years, Cody participated in wrestling and football while holding down a part-time job at Jay’s Restaurant in Sanborn, IA. Knowing what HE liked to eat inspired him to invent the “Cody Breakfast Sandwich”; apparently others liked it too as it ended up on the menu! His interest in good food stayed with him as he enjoyed experimenting in later years with smoking different kinds of meat.
Sports were always a big part of Cody’s life. His Dad had passed on his love for disc golf, giving Cody the skill and know-how to become a co-founder of the course which was built in Sanborn. After high school, he also had the opportunity to continue playing football – this time with the Iowa Sharks semi-pro team - until he suffered a serious shoulder injury. He worked at various jobs, including Maintainer Corporation in Sheldon, IA as a welder…another talent he learned from his father, ethanol plant construction, and Demco, Inc. in Boyden, IA. Being passionate about his job, he soon worked his way up to his current role of Team Lead of the Robot Middle Weld Department. Currently, he was also assisting Gary Thompsen with his hog unit near Melvin.
On April 30, 2011, Cody was united in marriage to Tori Lynn Ross at Melvin, IA. The new couple made their home in Sanborn, along with Cody’s daughter, Madison, eventually adding two children to complete their family: Emery and Milet. While working and going to the kids’ activities kept everyone’s schedules fairly occupied, there was always a little time left for recreation. Hunting and fishing were first on Cody’s list, followed by disc golf and kayaking. Being a member of A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa, both he and Tori enjoyed taking a spin on his Harley or going on a short trip. With all of his interests and passions - family always came first.
On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Cody passed from this life at the age of 37 years. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Tori Cammann; children: Madison, Emery, and Milet Cammann all of Sanborn, IA; his mother, Brenda Cammann; and siblings: Chris (Macie) Cammann, and Kari (Kevin) Vige all of Sanborn; mother-in-law, Sheila Ross; brothers-in-law: Patrick Conry and Chance Lester all of Melvin; Tori’s grandparents: Roger and Peg Jacobs of Hartley, IA and Ronald Lester, Sr. of Ogden, IA; other aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and good friends.
Preceding him in death were his father, Barry Cammann; step-father-in-law, Ronald Lester, Jr.; grandparents: Stan and Karen Ackerman, Sarah Tesso, Vern Ross and Sheryle Lester; aunt, Susan Ackerman; uncles: David Heitritter, and Troy Ackerman.
In lieu of floral gifts, please direct memorials in Cody’s name to his family.
Thank you for your kind consideration.

She attended school in Everly, graduating from Everly High School with the class of 1961. During her school years, Ginger enjoyed sports, playing organ for their church and had a fondness for all sorts of animals. She had a big heart, a great smile and loved life.
The night of her high school graduation, Ginger took her first adventurous ride with a girlfriend and her relatives heading to Omaha, NE. The girls spent their first night at the YMCA, finding jobs and a place to live the next day – they were ecstatic to finally be out on their own. A year later, Ginger’s family was planning a trip to California and invited Her and her roommate to come along. Not only did they accept, but decided to leave Omaha and start something new in California, staying with relatives while they looked for jobs and living quarters.
While in California, Ginger met and married Lee Welch; together they had one son, Gregory. Ginger stayed home for a while, taking care of Greg and doing foster care. During this time, she made and finalized plans to own her own sporting goods store situated in a small mall in Walnut, CA. When her marriage ended, she focused more of her attention on her business. It not only sustained her through a difficult time, but became a big part of her life for many years.
Ginger remarried Paul Kline, eventually sold the store and moved to Reno, NV. She was employed as an administrative assistant for a plumbing company located there. After her father’s death, Ginger moved her mother from Sun Lakes, AZ to Reno, being her loving caretaker for the next nine years while also working full time. When the plumbing company pulled up stakes, Ginger opted to stay in Reno, taking on a variety of jobs; her favorites were being a top-notch car salesperson and an antiques dealer.
Paul and Ginger moved to Del Webb Retirement Community once they both quit working. Ginger enjoyed meeting many new friends, joined a book club and Bible Study, played Bridge and belonged to a pool league. She also loved watching or going to basketball games and walking her dog around the neighborhood.
Paul’s health had been declining for some time and Ginger found herself having memory issues. After Paul passed away, she moved to Brea, CA to be closer to Greg. When Greg died, Ginger established her residence at Prairie View in Sanborn, IA. It became her home and support group for almost five years until her passing on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. Ginger took her last “adventurous ride” at the age of 80 years.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Paul Kline; her son, Greg; her parents and grandparents; brother-in-law, Lowell Rinehart; and nephew, Zane Rinehart.

He grew up on the farm six miles north of Hartley, and then in the town of Sanborn, living in several different houses. He attended Sanborn Christian Grade School and Western Christian High School. Larry Dean Klatt - November 27, 1937 - January 05, 2024

Departed: 01/05/2024 (Sanborn)
Obituary Preview: Larry Dean Klatt was born November 27, 1937, near Melvin, IA, the son of Otto Sr. and Pearl (Wells) Klatt. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran church in Melvin and grew up on the family farm along with his eleven brothers and sisters. He received his education through the local country school system, attending both Baker and Harrison Township schools, completing the 8th Grade.
Being third from the youngest, Larry began helping his Dad on the farm at an early age as his older siblings had already gone from home. While using horsepower for everything - from threshing oats to check-wire planting - may have been a lot of work, it left Larry with a love for agriculture that would stay with him the rest of his life.
On October 20, 1962, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley became the setting for the marriage of Larry and Lois M. Nagel. They began their new life in Hartley, raised two daughters there and called it “home” ever since. This past October marked 61 years of sharing their lives together.
Larry farmed with his Dad until 1963. In 1965, he began working for Ruby Implement, located in Hartley, and continued there when it became Miller Implement. When Millers closed their doors in 1985, he was employed at the John Deere Implement in Spencer, IA until his retirement in 2000. Throughout his mechanics career, Larry had torn apart and overhauled all sorts of farm equipment, but became especially adept with balers, planters and combines. In 1990, he logged in his “longest service call” - flying to Central America to help set up four combines that had been shipped to Honduras.
After 35 years of tightening belts, oiling chains and figuring out what makes a machine tick, Larry was qualified to fix just about anything – and he did. In 2001, he took on the custodial position at HMS in Hartley, keeping the school in good shape for the next six and a half years. He also had a passion for helping people, so often found himself repairing appliances and farm equipment or doing plumbing and electrical work. Giving back to the community, he had volunteered as a Boy Scout leader and served on the Katrina cleanup effort with others from his church.
When he wasn’t in the middle of a project, camping was a favorite family event when the girls were small. Lots of good memories were made setting up the tent or sitting around a campfire. In later years, he and Lois enjoyed traveling together; visiting all 50 states, as well as Mexico, Canada the Bahamas, and taking in seven cruises! Yet, nothing brought him more pleasure than just driving around the local country roads or playing cards and having coffee with friends in Hartley.
On Friday, January 5, 2024, Larry passed from this life at the age of 86 years. Preceding him were his parents, Otto and Pearl Klatt; siblings and spouses: Merna (Earl) Jacobs, Lola (Paul, Sr.) Yock, James (Elsa) Klatt, John (Gwen) Klatt, William (Vernice) Klatt, Thomas Klatt, Ann Klatt (in infancy), and Otto, Jr. “Butch” Klatt.
He is survived by his wife, Lois of Hartley, IA; daughters: Lorie (Shawn) Hubbard of Omaha, NE, and Linette Klatt of Boise, ID; one grandson, Jacob Hubbard of Omaha, NE; sisters: Betty (Richard) Scmidt, and Ellen Ackerman both of Spencer, IA, Kathryn Karlsen of Melvin, IA; other relatives and friends.
