ANGELINA MIRANDA DIAZ - August 01, 1932 - December 23, 2023

Departed: 12/23/2023 (Ridgewood)
Obituary Preview: GRANDMA’S OBITUARY Born in Patillas, Puerto Rico, Angelina “Helen” Miranda-Diaz was the eldest girl of fourteen children and spent most of her young life caring for eleven of her younger siblings alongside her mother. In the late 1940s, she was one of few women from her community to graduate high school. Though her dream was to become a detective, she enrolled in a nursing program while working part time as a bookkeeper in her local grocery store to support her family. Eventually, she made the brave decision to leave home to complete a nursing program in New York City. She recounted fondly about the American airplanes that brought snow to the Island during the Christmas holidays when she was a child, and was cautiously hopeful for the opportunities for independence, education, and career that lay ahead with moving away. At age 22 in 1954, she boarded a plane to JFK airport, moving in with her cousins in Spanish Harlem and experienced months of culture shock setting into the City. She enrolled in Nursing school and accelerated English classes immediately, while continuing to work to support herself and send money home. In her final stages of her nursing program, she was required to intern full time. It was an unpaid commitment she could not afford to do, and was forced to leave the program. Her plan was to return home to Puerto Rico, but she was invited to unionize for a local factory. She became a lead negotiator of the entire factory with the owners; securing full benefits, improved working conditions, and periodic raises for the workers. She was the first signature on the labor contract. She decided to stay in NYC after this major achievement, and made trips back to Puerto Rico annually. In 1958, she met her future husband, Pedro Miranda- Diaz. They married 9 months later, and purchased an apartment in Spanish Harlem together. Over the next three years, they had three children: Mariana, Geneva, and Peter. Helen stopped working to raise her children. Eventually, she returned to work for higher wages in a meat packing plant in New Jersey. In 1964, an opportunity to own a home presented itself, and her family moved to East New York, Brooklyn, which would become a home and haven to countless people from the neighborhood. It was there that they brought home three more children: Jose, Beatrice, and Junior. Some of her favorite memories were trips with her kids to Central Park. Helen was known for her delicious Puerto Rican and creative meals she’d cook, snack on, and serve in a full house, or bring to neighbors during the holidays and hard times. She lived her life by her Catholic values, and from a place of strength that demanded respect. St. Gabriel Parish was a second home to her and family for most of her adult life. Helen retired before becoming a grandmother in 1982, and serving as a registered foster parent in New York. Over the subsequent thirty years, she enjoyed traveling with her husband on work trips and with her family to visit relatives. She was pivotal in the upbringing of her grandchildren. At certain points in her life, she lived with her children to help raise her grandchildren with the same love and firm values that she set with all she nurtured. Fifty-nine years later, she passed away in her East New York home, with her husband, her family, and the friends who cared for her in her final years by her side. She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who believe they are living the lives their matriarch worked for, and wanted for them.
