Sir Frederick Squires was a well-known hair stylist and entrepreneur in the Hill District. His accomplishments to the community are featured in the “Teenie” Harris Museum. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
We invite family and friends to join us in his homegoing services, which will be held on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Samuel J. Jones Funeral Home, 2644 Wylie Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Viewing services will begin at 10 am until 12 pm, with funeral services immediately following. Growing up in the vibrant South Oakland area, she attended Schenley High School before embarking on a unique educational path. She completed her GED through an adult education program sponsored by the Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) of Pittsburgh, showcasing her determination and thirst for education.
At the tender age of 18, Phyllis embarked on a journey of love and family. She married Charles Williams, and together they experienced the joys and challenges of parenthood, welcoming their beloved daughter, Latusha Williams, into the world. Their journey took them to Tacoma, Washington, where Charles served in the US Army. Afterward, Phyllis returned to her roots in Pittsburgh, settling in the Hill District, where she continued to support her family.
Phyllis was a dedicated worker, taking on various roles in commercial property management, including helping maintain the family-owned Airbnb on Cato Street in Oakland. Seeking new horizons, she ventured to Atlanta, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida, where she resided alongside her dear friend Cheri Powe. Her daughter and son-in-law eventually joined her in Jacksonville, enriching her life with family closeness.
Phyllis's journey was one of remarkable transformation. In the late 2000s, she overcame weight struggles with gastric bypass surgery, shedding over 100 pounds. This triumph improved her health and ignited a newfound confidence that she proudly expressed through her love for fashion and embracing the latest trends. Throughout her life, Phyllis exemplified the spirit of caregiving, especially demonstrated in her devoted care for her sister, Arlean, after a stroke, until Arlean's passing. She often hosted family gatherings for Sunday feasts, accompanied by cheering on her beloved Steelers.
Phyllis's legacy is one of resilience and boundless love. She leaves behind her daughter, Latusha Williams Freeman (Troy Freeman), of Jacksonville, Florida; her grandson, Phillip Jordan; great-grandchildren Semia and Heaven; sisters Cynthia Haston, Vanessa Anderson, and LaNella Hooper-Williams (Martin Williams) of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; and a brother, Kenneth Hooper. She also leaves behind a multitude of nieces and nephews: Sondra Slaughter, Andrew Hooper, Dominique Hooper, Mario Haston, Summer Haston, Trina Chavis, Terri Jones, Brittany Jones, Kevin Hooper, Gloria Hooper, Ebony Hooper, Bianca Hooper, LaShawnda Hooper, Kenny Hooper Jr., and numerous other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gloria Kitchen and William Ackles; sister, Arlean Brown; and brothers, Andrew Leon Hooper and William Thomas Hooper.
Her memory will be cherished by all who were privileged to know her, as she lives on in the hearts of those she touched with her kindness, strength, and unwavering love. May she rest in peace, forever remembered and dearly missed.

Ray was born in Pittsburgh, PA on April 7, 1952. He received his formal education in the public schools of Pittsburgh graduating from South Hills High School.
Ray was baptized at Jerusalem Baptist Church at an early age where he took part in different activities. Even though he had no formal music lessons, he had a small band, and he enjoyed playing his mother’s organ. He served in the United States Army for two years.
Raymond held several jobs before beginning a career as a steamfitter/pipefitter, which led to him becoming an independent contractor. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles (Dedie) Petite, ex-wife Kim Gates and life partner Mary Held. He leaves to cherish his memories his daughters, Kambie Harrison (Maurice), Denise Wesley (Romaine), bonus son, Frank Green, grandchildren, Jaimaya Pruitt, Alivia Harrison, Maurice Harrison Jr., Da’Quan Holly, Keelen Holly and Ra’Vaughn Holly. He also leaves sisters Lucille Noel, Gladys Freeman-Handy (James) and brother John (Jerry) Gates, many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews. Also, a host of family and friends.

Wanda was born to Charlotte and Forest Young in Marianna, Pennsylvania. She was a woman of remarkable compassion and grace, deeply devoted to her family and her faith. Wanda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Scott, but her memory lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Wanda's legacy of kindness, warmth, and unwavering love for God will forever be cherished by her adoring family. She was a beacon of generosity, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, often without being asked.
Left to cherish her memory are her cherished daughter, Dianne, her beloved stepson, James, his wife Venus, her dear brother, Deleware, and her loving sister, Verdell. Wanda's presence will also be deeply missed by her grandchildren in Texas—Lexie, Randy, Matthew, Jennifer—along with her two great-granddaughters, as well as her grandchildren in Pittsburgh, all loving grandsons.
Wanda's life was a testament to her intelligence, kindness, and generosity. Driven by her thirst for knowledge, she pursued higher education and later excelled as an executive assistant to a CEO. Additionally, fueled by her passion for both fashion and her faith, Wanda successfully ran her own hat store for many years.
Beyond her professional achievements, Wanda's most treasured roles were those of devoted mother and grandmother. She poured boundless love and wisdom into her family, leaving an indelible mark on each of their lives.
In addition to her immediate family, Wanda leaves behind a vast network of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a multitude of friends who were touched by her warmth and grace.
Wanda Scott's departure from this world leaves a void that cannot be filled. Yet, her spirit will live on in the memories of all who were blessed to know her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered as a woman of extraordinary kindness, unwavering faith, and boundless love.
Wanda was a devoted member of Calvary until her husband's passing, after which her inability to drive led her to participate remotely. Even from a distance, Wanda's commitment to her faith remained steadfast as she continued to watch Baptist church services until the time of her passing. This dedication speaks volumes about her unwavering spiritual devotion and her capacity to adapt to changing circumstances while maintaining her strong connection to her faith community.
May her soul find eternal peace in the embrace of her Creator.
