Gabriel G. "Gabe" Mraz - June 01, 1947 - January 29, 2021

Obituary Preview: SALEM — Gabriel G. “Gabe” Mraz, 73, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 29, 2021, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born June 1, 1947, in Youngstown, a son of the late Michael and Anne (Tovtin) Mraz.

Gabe was a 1965 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He served his country in the Army as a buck sergeant, SP4, from 1967 to 1969. He was stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado and fought in the Vietnam War, earning the Purple Heart and several other medals, badges and commendations.

Following the war, Gabe worked for McKay Machine Company and Youngstown Sheet and Tube as a draftsman and General Motors in Lordstown as a line foreman. Then in 1976, he attended Kentucky Christian College, where he studied for the Christian ministry.

Upon completion of his studies, Gabe served as a minister in Christian Churches / Churches of Christ in Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. He retired from the ministry in 2011 due to health issues.

In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting model cars, watching TV and movies. He especially loved spending time with his family and his granddogs.

Gabe is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karen L. Bires, whom he married on Feb. 14, 1970; two sons, Joseph M. (Joy) of Salem and Matthew D. Mraz Sr. of Youngstown; three grandchildren, Matthew Jr., Austin and Payton, all of Austintown; a great-granddaughter, Mya Marie; and two brothers, Michael Mraz of Orange Park, Fla., and John (Gloria) Mraz of Boardman.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Sylvia Ramsthaler, and a brother, Richard Mraz.

There will be a memorial service held at a later date.

Gabe’s family would like to give a special thanks to the Community Hospice of Salem, especially Chalynne, and Tina and Samantha of Your Home Court Advantage for all of their care and compassion.

He was a graduate of Hershey High School and earned an Associates degree in Business Management from Kent State University.  Jim worked his entire career as a carpenter.  He was also a veteran of the United States Air Force.  In his spare time, Jim enjoyed shooting pool in several leagues, including APA League, TAP League and Salem Tuesday night Pool League.  Jim is survived by his wife, the former Patricia Stewart, whom he spent 46 years with, and married Feb. 11, 2002; a daughter, Jamie Beery of Columbus; three sons, Josh (Tesa) Beery of Columbiana, John "J.J." Beery of Salem and Jason McFarland of Leetonia; and three grandchildren, Seth Beery, Gavin McGilvary, and Thomas Gage Piatt.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother John Beery.  Visitation will be held Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Salem Chapel, followed by a military service at 7 p.m. Visit www.higgins-reardon.com to send condolences to the family.

Obituary Preview: SALEM — Ruby Iris Rich, 39, passed away Monday at her home. Ruby was born June 5, 1981 in Mountain View, Ark., the daughter of James Michael and Kathleen J. (Kwiatkowski) Rich.

She was a 2000 graduate of Salem High School, was a certified welder, tattoo artist as well as talented artist. She was an active member of the First Friends Church of Salem and its ministries, living her motto “I’d rather have your time than your dime.”

Ruby is survived by her daughters, whom she called the three songbirds, Mia, Mya and Maylee; two sisters, Dandelion (Justin Downs) Rich of Salem and Mesha E. (Shawn) Coffman and their son Jude of Salem; a brother, Seth (Diana White) Rich of Austin, Texas; her companion Joseph S. Murphy and his son Jameson Murphy; an aunt, Kris Rich; an uncle, Randolph Rich; and her dear friend Bill Blankenship. She was preceded in death by her parents and an aunt, Patricia Retzloff.

In Ruby’s words, “May we celebrate the time we were blessed to have them and remember the good die young.” Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, 1885 E. Main St., Salem, Ohio.

A Memorial Service will then be held at 3 p.m. at the First Friends Church of Salem.

Ruby’s family, the funeral home and church will be practicing social distancing and proper health protocol. As a social courtesy, please wear a mask or facial covering. If you are unable to attend, the family understands and acknowledges your thoughts and prayers as a tribute to Ruby.
