Joanne Mary Kainz - July 23, 1937 - May 13, 2024

Departed: 05/13/2024 (Blanchardville)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sorrow that the family of Joanne Mary (Lydon) Kainz, age 86 of Blanchardville, announce her passing on Monday May 13th, 2024, at the SSM Hospice Home in Monroe, Wisconsin.
Joanne was born on July 23, 1937, in Kendall, Wisconsin to Everett John and Margaret Agnes (Schumacher) Lydon. She grew up on the family farm in Kendall, helping her parents and brothers on the farm. She attended school in Kendall, Wisconsin where she graduated in 1955. After graduating, she moved to Madison where she worked at the Rennebohm Drug Store, Madison General Hospital, and worked at the Wisconsin Telephone Company. Joanne met her future husband, Leo Jacob Kainz in Madison when a friend let him tag along with him on a trip to Madison. Joanne and Leo were married October 12, 1957, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kendall, WI. After they were married, they lived in Rockford, IL where Leo worked at Carnes. They moved to Blanchardville in 1958 after their first child Debbie was born and Leo transferred to Carnes in Verona, Wisconsin. Joanne and Leo added five more children to their family which she watched over with love and commitment. Once the six children were older and the youngest, Lonny was in Kindergarten, Joanne went back to work. Joanne started her next phase of life by starting to work at Trumpy Cheese in 1972, where she would continue working for them for 21 years. When the cheese business closed in 1993, she continued her working career at Federal Industries in Belleville, WI where she would retire in March 2002. Full retirement for her only lasted 3 months before she would rejoin the work force by taking a job with Monroe Clinic where she cleaned the Blanchardville Clinic and a few other Monroe clinic locations. A shoulder injury caused her to finally retire otherwise she would still be working.
During their lives in Blanchardville they lived on County H for 33 years where they made many memories with their children. With those memories were also lots of work and the sharing of their love for gardening and fishing. Within walking distance to the Pecatonica River, the children were taught how to fish and even clean the fish you caught. The garden and canning became a large part of their summers but as the children grew and moved away the garden grew smaller. During the years the six kids were growing up, they spent Sundays together and always gathering at a different family members home or family coming to see them. Joanne was a wonderful baker and known for her graham cracker pie, fudge oatmeal bars and chocolate chip cookies. As a team Leo and Joanne loved bowling and spending time with friends at card club or you may even see them at the casino. Joanne loved spending time with all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed attending all their different events from school, church, and sports and when the games were close you would see her bowed head as she would be praying for a good outcome. In 1996 her sons built them a beautiful home, beside her daughter Debbie, where she would live until she became ill on May 3rd, 2024. Joanne enjoyed cooking and baking, word searches and puzzles. She was a devoted Catholic and a member of St. Isidore Parish (Immaculate Conception Catholic Church). She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Blanchardville and helped with the Pecatonica Food Pantry. In Joanne and Leo’s retirement, they enjoyed bus trips around the United States to many places and enjoyed those trips with many families and friends. Joanne loved her sports teams, and you could find her in front of the TV watching the Packers, Badgers, and Brewers games, depending on the season. Together, Joanne and Leo, built a life filled with love and laughter.
Joanne was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a great friend to many. Joanne was a selfless woman who dedicated her life to her family and friends. Joanne will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all.
Joanne is survived by her six children: Debbie (Dave) Johnson of Blanchardville, Laurie (Dave) Hughes of Blanchardville, Diane (Nate) Skattum of Argyle, Larry Kainz of Argyle, David (Cheri) Kainz of Belleville, and Lonny (Tammy) Kainz of Pueblo West, CO. Her fifteen grandchildren: John (Marley), Adam (Rachel) Tracey (Kyle), Ryan (Vanessa), Derek (Shania), Kyle (Mary), Rex (Sandy), Courtney (Steven), Cassidy (Dave), Cammy (Jacob), Justin (Travis), Jackson, Donavon, McKay, and Ciana. As well as twenty-seven great-grandchildren.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents and her in laws; her husband Leo, who died on 12/08/11, three grandsons, Craig Hughes on 11/28/89, Jerome Johnson on 06/29/12, Jeremy Kainz on 5/17/13, and two brothers, James Lydon on 04/13/96 and John Lydon on 06/07/17 and her daughter in law, Melody Kainz on 09/02/20.
Joanne will be dearly missed but her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the memories of her family and friends and all who were graced by her presence.
A visitation for Joanne will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024 from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. with a Rosary service at 8:00 P.M. at Blanchard Hall at 204 South Main Street in Blanchardville.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday May 18, 2024 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at  304 Meadow Street in Blanchardville.  The service will be livestreamed on the Saether Funeral Service Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/saetherfuneralservice Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Blanchardville.  A catered funeral lunch will be held at Blanchard Hall in Blanchardville after burial.  Saether Funeral Service of Blanchardville is assisting the family.  Online memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.saetherfuneralservice.com. Charles "Charlie" Andrew Sigg - March 23, 1933 - February 03, 2024

Departed: 02/03/2024 (Blanchardville)
Obituary Preview: Charles “Charlie” Andrew Sigg. Age 90 of rural Hollandale passed peacefully on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.  He was born on March 23, 1933 to Herman and Elise (Herger) Sigg in Arpin, Wisconsin.  He grew up on Highway 39 in rural Hollandale and attended rural school, and then graduated from Hollandale High School in 1951 in a class of eight students.  Following high school he worked construction helping to rebuild the Hollandale High School after a fire.  He then worked briefly at Oscar Mayer, and then did custom farming work.  He had the opportunity to buy the farm he worked on in his youth.  Right after that purchase he was drafted into the US Army where he served at Fort Hood, Texas and met Elvis Presley who was also serving there.  Following his years of service he returned to Hollandale and began dairy farming.  During his bachelor days he briefly played trumpet in a band called the Rhythm Ramblers with Bruce Bollerud.  He was married August 18, 1962 to Rosemarie Prusak from West Allis in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hollandale.  They happily farmed together for over 25 years.  In 1978 he decided to name his farm “Charlie’s Angels Acres” honoring his high milk production from the gentle herd he cared for with compassion.  He was an avid bowler and was an active member of St Patrick’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.  In 1985 he enrolled in the dairy herd buyout program and decided it was a good time to retire from milking.  He didn’t waste any time and started pursuing other hobbies after that, collecting cars from a Model-T to a Corvette Convertible; being a substitute driver for the Hodan Center in Mineral Point; and in 1996 he decided to start woodworking making toys and beautiful wooden boxes.  Wanting to stay busy and connecting to his community, he drove school bus for the Pecatonica Area School for 30 years.  He loved getting to know the students, driving for sporting events and field trips, every trip he could get.  He was very generous with the kids, often bringing them treats.  In retirement Charlie and Rosemarie also enjoyed traveling including trips overseas, especially to his homeland of Switzerland.  Charlie’s grandchildren were his world and they brought him so much joy.  He felt hard work, honesty and being the best person you can be was the way to live your life.  The better you can live your life, the better your rewards will be.  He always felt like there was a higher power guiding him to make all the right decisions through his life.  He felt you need to trust that higher power.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Rosemarie Sigg of rural Hollandale; one daughter Sally (Mark) Schaller of Ridgeway; three grandchildren, Savannah Schaller, Dalton Schaller, both of Milwaukee, and Wyatt Schaller of Ridgeway; and a sister, Susie (Wes) Watrud of Blanchardville.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Mary Ferrell, Joe Sigg, and Louis Gort.

Obituary Preview: William (Bill) Cunnea passed at home on Saturday, January 20, 2024, after a battle with bone cancer. In true fashion he hid how bad his health was until the very end. He wanted his family and friends to live their lives and not chase after his.
Born and raised in Chicago, Bill attended Loyola University - Chicago, where he would later return to teach photography, one of his passions. He had a lengthy career in business communications and was instrumental in establishing the Chicago chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). He enjoyed the open road and achieved his 100,000-mile milestone award as part of the Madison BMW club. Over the years, Bill wrote many articles for Outdoor Wisconsin detailing his adventures with the dogs. Bill also partnered with friends to create a series of hunting knives, the production of which benefited the local community in Nepal.

Larry Lee Lunda - July 07, 1961 - January 19, 2024

Departed: 01/19/2024 (Blanchardville)
Obituary Preview: Larry Lee Lunda, age 62 passed away peacefully with his fiancée by his side on Friday, January 19, 2024 at the West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, Florida.
Larry was born on July 7, 1961 in Dodgeville, WI and graduated from Pecatonica High School, Blanchardville, in 1979. He attended MATC in Madison and graduated in 1981 with a Police Science Degree. He spent much of his career working for American Family Insurance in Madison, WI.
Larry was raised by his loving parents, Ardell and Rosalie (Moen) Lunda, in the beautiful countryside surrounding his beloved hometown of Blanchardville.  It was in this countryside, his sanctuary, that Larry found profound peace and happiness. He walked daily through the wooded hills and valleys overlooking the hallowed grounds of his youth. Most often he would have his dog, a fishing pole or a rifle with him as he was an avid hunter and fisherman, he spent much of his time outside enjoying all the glory the four seasons provided on the lands that were sacred to him. Throughout his life Larry would revisit this area when he needed to gather strength and to fill his soul with the contentment, he felt in years past.
Larry was a gifted athlete and earned many conference medals over his 4 years of high school track participation. Excelling in the 100-yard dash, long jump, 220-yard dash, 440-yard dash and 880-yard relay earned Larry MVP status for 3 consecutive years. He set 4 records his senior year of which his record in the long jump of 20 ft. 2 ½ inches stood for approximately 15 years and his record in the 100-yard dash of 10.4 seconds was long standing as well. Larry finished his track career as a state contender in the 100-meter dash his senior year. Larry continued to enjoy sports in a very significant way by coaching his 5 children in middle school track, football and basketball programs. He would talk about coaching his children often as it was important and held great meaning to him.
Larry was strong in his Christian faith and was a loyal leader in his church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Deerfield, WI. Inspired by his faith, he wrote and delivered many sermons. He also served as their worship and music chair and loved organizing hymn selection to ensure the old favorites were sung as well as the new hymns of the day. He taught confirmation and Sunday school classes and participated in church plays and skits. Larry also served as vice president of church council for two terms and was proud to serve as the church’s resident historian.
All his life, Larry was a prolific writer and wrote a novella, many parodies, stories and poems. He was also a talented musician and wrote songs and composed music.  He had a passion for all genres of music but one of his greatest joys was performing alongside his father as they played their guitars and sang for church services and funerals.
Throughout his life, Larry enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycles and the sense of freedom he gained from just being on the open road.  He also found much happiness in sitting by the river and visiting with local folks in Blanchardville.
Larry is survived by his children, Shawn (Paige) Lunda of Brodhead, Stephen Lunda, Elizabeth Lunda, and Seth (Corina) Lunda all of Madison, his father, Ardell Lunda and stepmother, Deanna Salzman Lunda of Middleton, his grandchildren, Tyson Flahavan, Averie, Landon, Charlotte, Hailey and Hannah Lunda and his sister, Shari Eberhardt. Erna Ann Chrostowski - June 28, 1935 - December 19, 2023

Departed: 12/19/2023 (Blanchardville)
Obituary Preview: Erna Chrostowski, age 88 of Hollandale died on Tuesday, December 19th at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison surrounded by her family, whom she reminded over and over how much she loved them.  She was born June 28, 1935, in Cheektowaga, New York to Frederick and Elsie (Horst) Graap.  Erna married Stanley Chrostowski on April 26, 1954, in New York. Together they had 10 children and worked hard to raise them and give them everything a child needed. There was love, discipline, a sense of accountability and responsibility. But most of all there was love and a sense of humor. Mom was home with us and often provided day care and support for other children as well. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life. Grammy gave them love, guidance but most of all she gave them encouragement and never held back from telling them she loved them and how proud she was of them.
Erna was known for her excellent cooking and baking skills. Mom provided our family with a true appreciation for food. With our large family things were pretty tight but every meal was enough because she made it with caring hands and love. She shared her love for cooking and nurturing as a cook at the Pecatonica Area school district, where she served many meals (and occasional hugs) to students and staff for 28 years. She was always willing and looked forward to assisting with cooking projects and special events. She never turned down any requests for her famous Peanut Butter Bars that were loved by all. She also loved making Fruitcakes.
Mom was a worker! She worked at Westing House and Walworth in Buffalo, NY and GE in Danville, Il.  After cooking for the school during the week she worked the weekends in Hollandale at Pete’s, Brad’s Place and then again for Pete. She loved seeing and meeting people and put her heart in every meal she served.
Mom had a creative flair, she loved to knit, crochet, and quilt. Her more recent hobby was working through word search books. It kept her mind busy and sharp. She always kept one close by and shared them with others.
She was a big supporter in all community fundraisers and events. She was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, Hollandale, WI. She was also a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Hollandale American Legion Auxiliary 510.
Erna is survived by Patricia (Robert) Benson, Barbara (Les) Morgan, Sharon (Jeff) Lewis, Walt (Karin) Chrostowski, Robin (Stan) Peterson, Dave (Meta) Chrostowski, Karen (Leroy) Anderson, Mark (Vicki) Chrostowski, Bob (Joree) Chrostowski. Brother-in-law Gerald (Barb) Chrostowski of Newburgh, IN, 24 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild.  She is preceded in death by her parents Frederick and Elsie, brothers Fred and Tom Graap, husband Stanley Chrostowski, son Stanley Jr., nephew Billy Chrostowski, niece Dana Graap, and grandson Sam Benson. A visitation for Erna will be held on Saturday, December 23rd from 10:00 am until 12:30pm at New Hope Lutheran in Hollandale.  A funeral service will follow at 12:30 PM at the church.  The service will be live cast for the public on the Saether Funeral Service Facebook page.  Rev. John Paul Larson - September 28, 1932 - December 09, 2023

Departed: 12/09/2023 (Blanchardville)
Obituary Preview: John Paul Larson, age 91, formerly of rural Blanchardville/Hollandale passed away peacefully on December 9, 2023 at Upland Hills nursing and Rehab Center in Dodgeville. He was born on September 28, 1932 to Bennie and Eunice (Lageson) Larson and spent his youth near Blanchardville farming, fox hunting and playing baseball. He married Shirley Severson on October 17, 1959. John and Shirley raised two sons and farmed together in the Blanchardville area until their retirement in 2006. After selling the farm they moved to Barneveld to be close to their grandchildren Michael and Morgan, who were the brightest lights in their lives.  John quit school at 16 to begin farming and had a reputation as a good neighbor and an excellent dairy farmer with a very strong work ethic. He approached the challenges of farming and life with a strong will and resolve to “outwork the problem”. Good stewardship and conservation of the land and the health of his animals was more important than production. He was an amateur naturalist who enjoyed the fauna and flora of his farm, loved making seasonal observations and watching the weather, had an interest in geology (picking up rocks!) and Native American history, finding arrowheads in his fields. He enjoyed woodworking and making things with his hands, especially if he was working with kids. There was always a place in his heart for a good dog.
John was preceded in death by Shirley on March 23, 2019 and without her life was never the same as he missed her dearly. He is survived by his sons Randy (Karla) of Blanchardville and Scott (Brenda) of Barneveld, grandchildren Michael of Stevens Point and Morgan of La Crosse and his siblings, Gordy of New Glarus, Barb Lien of Blanchardville, Mitzi (Jack) Mason of Mt. Horeb and Sharon (Larry) Blair of Albert Lea, Minnesota as well as sister-in-law Judy (Don) Dobson of Mineral Point. Private services will be held.
The family wishes to express our gratitude to the staff at Upland Hills NRC and the Upland Hills Health Hospice care team for the compassion, care and kindness you showed Dad. We think of all of you as family.
As Dad would say when it was time to get back to work, “Well, I guess this won’t get it done”. Memorials may be made in John’s name to New Hope Lutheran Church in Blanchardville. If a man can’t be happy on a little farm in Wisconsin,
he hasn’t the makings of happiness in his soul. Nick Engelbert

Departed: 12/05/2023 (Blanchardville)
Obituary Preview: Gary J. Gruenenfelder, age 69 of Blanchardville, died from a tragic car accident on Tuesday, December 5, 2023. He was born to Henry and Margaret (Wahl) Gruenenfelder on April 3, 1954 at St. Claire Hospital in Monroe, WI. He grew up on the family farm in Blanchardville. He attended Blanchardville School graduating in 1972 in the newly formed Pecatonica School
district as their “first and finest” graduating class.  On May 31, 1975, Gary married the love of his life, Muriel (Murt) McCarville, of Hollandale at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hollandale, WI. He worked for Zim’s Cheese for four years, becoming a licensed Cheesemaker. Together, Gary and Murt rented two different farms in the area. In May of 1980, they bought the Eidsmoe farm just north of Blanchardville in Moscow township. Gary and Murt farmed together there until he built a new house on the edge of their farm where they still reside today. Gary started Gruenenfelder Construction, remodeling and building many new homes as well as the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Blanchardville. Eventually, he transitioned careers and began working at Intercon Construction in Madison, an underground utility company. Gary worked in the warehouse as the Shop Manager supplying tools and equipment to field employees across the nation. He later came home to help his son Farron, who bought their family farm. That same day, Gary and Murt bought a neighboring farm which they sold to their son Jason. Gary loved to operate field equipment on their family land.
He is survived by his lovely wife, Murt, six children and 19 grandchildren: Justin (Michele) Eva & Hawken Gruenenfelder of Monticello, Farron (Jess) Trinity, Aidan, Layton & Atley Gruenenfelder of Blanchardville, Lucas (Dana) Teagan & Aven Gruenenfelder of Hollandale, Heidi (Jason) Ella, Owen & Olivia Schrader of Pewaukee, Jason (Kris) Halle, Jaxon, Cal, Lydia & Cheyenne Gruenenfelder of Blanchardville, and Lacy (James) Ryder, Taylee & Ace Gilbertson of New Glarus. Gary is also survived by his siblings: Marilyn (Lee) Farhney, Anita Kammerer, Al Gruenenfelder, Tricia Hendrickson, Mark (Kelly) Gruenenfelder, and Ann (Denny) Marty. Denny (Jane) McCarville, Christine (John) Berthelsen, Mary Venden (Steve), Sue (Denny) Hammond, Mike (Barb) McCarville, Kate (Jeff) Hendrickson, Cyndi (Denny) Nafzger, Amy Sarbacker (Tim) and many nieces and nephews who he loved like children. Gary was a Pecatonica school board member for five years, serving as President, for one year.  He was a member of the Blanchardville Fire Dept for 24+ years, serving as Secretary/Treasurer and an EMT for many years. He served as the Historian of the Knights of Columbus for many years. Gary was a businessman at heart. In 2015, he started Quad County Rentals in which he bought the old Zim’s Cheese/Quad Co Coop feed mill and started a self-storage business. In 2018, he opened Gary’s Service Station in the previously closed Blanchardville Coop Oil Station. There, he provided much needed service for local community members. Gary was dealt a couple of bad hands in his life. He faced prostate cancer in 2008, a grade 5 ruptured brain aneurysm in November 2010, a 2nd aneurysm (not ruptured) in February 2016, and ocular melanoma in August 2019. But like his mother, he was very determined (Murt said he was stubborn); he kept his chin up and had a very positive attitude throughout it all. With the help and prayers of all of his family and friends, he made a miraculous recovery and was back driving tractor and combine. Gary was able to meet the rest of his grandchildren and make so many more memories. He absolutely loved playing euchre, supporting his children and grandchildren, having a few drinks and visiting with family and friends. Gary was also known for his big smile, generosity, quick wit and humor. He will be deeply missed!

"Volly" Valborg Doris Berg - November 07, 1933 - August 13, 2023

Departed: 08/13/2023 (Blanchardville)
Obituary Preview: Valborg Doris (Kolden) “Volly” Berg age 89, died on Sunday August 13th at home surrounded by her family.  Volly was born November 7, 1933, to Alfred and Ida (Everson) Kolden, in Green County, Wisconsin.  She grew up on the family farm on Sawmill Road in rural Blanchardville.  She attended the Postville School until 8th grade.  Volly was a 1952 graduate of Blanchardville High School.
She married Morrion Berg on December 28, 1952, at Blanchardville Lutheran Church.  Volly and Morrion were a “one-unit team”, always working together on whatever needed to be done on the farm as well as whatever needed to be done to maintain their home.  Volly loved to cook and bake.  This was evident by the number of full cookie jars that could always be found in her freezer, ready for her family and company that would stop in to visit.  Volly enjoyed playing cards and board games with family and friends…and she LIKED TO WIN.  Volly always worked hard, enjoyed and cherished the subtleties of life, and always appreciated the blessings granted to her, both big and small.
Volly is survived by her husband, Morrion; her three daughters, Luan (Randy) Beckwith of New Glarus, Marlys (Dan) Hittesdorf  of Blanchardville and Sandra (Steve) Smith of Lake Delton; her six grandchildren, Ryan (Cheryl) Beckwith, Aaron (Heather) Beckwith, Tim Hittesdorf, Josh (Beth Wachter) Hittesdorf, Justin (Lulu Rivas) Smith and Nicole (Andi Hamzallari) Smith;  her five great-grandchildren, Kinsey Beckwith, Colten Beckwith, Gavin Beckwith, Chase Beckwith and Kendall Beckwith; Sister Hazel (Jerry) Gelbach; Sisters-in-Law Margaret Berg and Kathy Berg; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Ida Kolden; Morrion’s parents, Henry and Effie Berg; family members Ardell Kolden, Willis and Colleen Kolden, Robert and Peggy Berg, Russell Berg, Stanley Berg and Duane Berg. Volly was something different to everyone:  a daughter, a sister, a mother, a wife, an aunt, a cousin, a friend, a teacher, a shoulder to lean on…she will continue to live in our hearts until we join her at the Lord’s Table in Heaven!
The family would like to express their sincerest thank you to all of the “angels” who have helped during this hard journey;  especially those associated with Upland Hills Health Hospice, and the caring family, friends and neighbors who went above and beyond.

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, achievements, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy for generations to come.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also mention hobbies, interests, achievements, and charitable organizations they supported.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform it will be published in. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only their name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides additional information about the person's life.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries can be published in local newspapers, online obituary platforms, funeral home websites, social media, and other digital channels. They may also be printed in programs or bulletins for memorial services or funerals.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online sites offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge a fee based on the length of the obituary or the number of publications it will appear in.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they want to be remembered. This can be a unique opportunity for self-reflection and storytelling.

What is the purpose of an obituary in a newspaper?

Newspaper obituaries serve as a public notice of a person's passing, allowing friends and acquaintances to learn about the death and pay their respects. They also provide a historical record of the person's life for future generations.

Can I edit an obituary after it has been published?

In most cases, it is difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it has been published. It's essential to proofread carefully before submitting the final version.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The time it takes for an obituary to be published can vary depending on the publication or platform. Some online sites may publish immediately, while newspapers may have a delay of several days or weeks.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include meaningful quotes, poems, or lyrics in an obituary as a way to add personality and depth to the tribute.

What if I don't want to include certain family members in the obituary?

This can be a sensitive issue. It's generally recommended to include all immediate family members and closest relatives. However, if there are estranged relationships or other complex situations, it's best to discuss with other family members or a funeral director before making any decisions.

Can I use humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be an effective way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to consider the audience and tone when incorporating humorous elements.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to reprint an obituary on a anniversary of the person's passing or another significant date, you may be able to do so with permission from the original publisher.

How do I submit an obituary for publication?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. Check their website or contact their customer service department for specific guidelines on how to submit your obituary.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

What if I need to correct errors in an already-published obituary?

If you discover errors in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately. They may be able to correct the mistakes online or issue a correction notice in a subsequent edition.

Can I create an online memorial page instead of publishing an obituary?

Yes! Online memorial pages are becoming increasingly popular as a way to share memories and celebrate a person's life. These pages can remain active indefinitely and allow friends and family to contribute stories and photos over time.

How long will my online obituary remain available?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some sites may archive obituaries indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time.

Can I reuse content from an existing obituary for other purposes?

Yes! You may want to reuse content from an existing obituary for other purposes such as creating a memorial booklet, social media post, or grave marker inscription. Be sure to check copyright laws and permissions before doing so.

Are there any specific formatting requirements for an obituary?

The formatting requirements for an obituary vary depending on the publication or platform. Check their guidelines for specific instructions on font styles, sizes, line lengths, and other formatting considerations.
