Harold was the typical stubborn Norwegian, lover of Lutefisk and beer kaese cheese. He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone anytime. Harold loved the outdoors especially camping, hunting, fishing, and kayaking. He loved spending time with his friends sitting around the campfire, playing corn hole, cards, dominos, and other games. After a surprise trip to Florida for his 60th birthday, Harold fell in love with walking on the beach, shelling and looking for sharks’ teeth (total 1,400). Every day after walking the beach for hours Harold would come back and tell Shari stories about the people he met while shelling. Harold was a faithful helper of Kenny and June of the Gilbertson General Store in Keyeser stocking coolers, cleaning the outhouses, and keeping them stocked with toilet paper. Every so often there would be new decorations in the outhouses, objects Harold found while rummaging.
Harold first started working at a farm as a young teenager and saved his money to buy a bicycle to get to and from work. He went on to do various jobs around the area. Harold then spent the remainder of his career working for Eric Hamele mowing grass and landscaping, a job he loved to do and took great pride in.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law Terry Dahms who he loved to go fishing with, his yellow lab Moose, and several aunts and uncles.
Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal. No words can express how much we will miss you.

Katrina Jade Hanson-Herrem - May 30, 2004 - April 05, 2022

Departed: 04/05/2022 (DeForest)
Obituary Preview: DeForest - Katrina Jade Hanson-Herrem, age 17, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. She was born to Heather Hanson and Scott Herrem on May 30, 2004. Katrina was a senior at DeForest High School and was a member of National Honor Society. One of her biggest passions in life was learning. She loved foreign languages (especially Spanish and also studied German). She loved school and her teachers. During the summer months, she continued her learning by taking courses at MATC East and through the HarvardX program. She looked forward to her trip to study abroad on her foreign language immersion trip with her Deforest High School classmates during the Summer of 2022. In the Fall of 2022, Katrina planned to attend the University of Minnesota, with a double-major in Microbiology and Spanish. She wanted to help others "like her", through research science to create new medicines (including alternative medicine) or possibly research cancer. Studying abroad in college was also definitely on her "bucket list" to do.
Katrina was bright light in all of the lives that she touched. She was vibrant and funny (even though she felt she wasn't) she made us laugh and smile so much. She was also known for her kindness and inclusivity at school and wanted everyone around her to feel accepted. She was always looking out for others.
Katrina had the most infectious laugh and contagious energy. She had the most amazing smile (that we lovingly called her "cheese face" when she was little) and had the most beautiful and memorable dimple on her right cheek. Everything was always more exciting and fun with her around. She made you appreciate the little things.
Katrina had an endless curiosity, searching for things and experiences that made her feel happy, loved, and safe. She loved her family, she loved her friends, and especially her sister Bekah (daughter of Katie Davis and Scott Herrem), who nicknamed her big sister Katrina "Titi". She also adored her cousins Connor and Maddy, who she always referred to as being "like my brother and sister". Katrina loved "blowing up the valley" watching fireworks at "Grandma and Grampa Gary's", yelling "fire in the hole" with the kids and everyone around the bonfire.
Katrina loved so many things...music, singing in the shower, she absolutely loved to dance with her friends, she enjoyed learning new make-up looks from YouTube, her "self-care" time, eating spicy foods, playing the viola when she was little, she loved the ocean, roadtrips and blasting her favorite music in her car, paddleboarding, she talked very often about going back to her "absolute favorite hiking spot in Mount Horeb" where we used to live, and she loved animals...we could go on and on... Katrina was so proud to be "the mom" of her adorable hamsters, Zip and Stripe and loved her "pet therapy time" with sweet Daisy.
Katrina loved taking care of the environment and found numerous opportunities to make a difference in this world by donating to and shopping at Goodwill or purchasing from organizations that support philanthropic causes that she believed in, such as "4Ocean". She volunteered at various organizations, such as Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin, The River Food Pantry, and participated in the Disaster Relief Clean-Up in Coon Valley, WI. She participated in Girls' Biz, Wisconsin Women Entrepreneurs of SouthCentral Inc., which is a community program that empowers young girls learn about, create, and manage a business, and the CEO's of Tomorrow, Business of Giving (BOG) Lab, which focused on social-entrepreneurship and how to take her passions and hobbies and turn them into creative business ideas that help others. She was also a participant and long-time Junior Coach for Girls' on the Run of SouthCentral Wisconsin.
She brought so much joy to everyone around her and to our lives. Words will never begin to describe how much she will be missed by her mom, Heather Hanson (Dirk Dannhoff), and by her dad, Scott Herrem (Elizabeth Herrem), her grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many other friends.
In honor of who she was and what she desired, things such as honesty, compassion, and understanding, we choose to be open about her struggles. We will honor her memory and her life by being open about what "it" is. She hated calling "it" an "illness". Katrina struggled with anxiety. She also struggled with depression. She worked so hard to help herself, use the skills she learned, and use what she learned to help others at school. She was a beautiful soul. In honor of her memory, a memorial fund will be set up to donate to an organization that helps teenagers who struggle with anxiety and depression.
She would want us to honor her by living beautiful lives... To travel, to explore, to love freely and openly...to never hesitate to sing in the shower, and throw your hands up in the air and dance...to think of her and enjoy all that life has to offer. ___________________________________________________
DeFoest - It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved daughter, Katrina Jade Hanson-Herrem, age 17, of Deforest, WI.
Katrina was the daughter of Scott Herrem (Elizabeth Herrem) and Heather Hanson. In addition to her parents, Katrina is survived by her sister Rebekah Herrem and stepsiblings Rowan and Charlotte Linderud. Katrina was the granddaughter of John and Deborah Herrem, Gary and Linda Hanson, and Gary and Mary Jo Cyrus. She is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Katrina was a senior at Deforest High School, Class of 2022. There was not a moment where Katrina wasn’t practicing her Spanish or German. She had been accepted to the University of Minnesota and was very much looking forward to being a Gopher. She was laser focused on pursuing a double major in microbiology and Spanish because she wanted a career that would allow her to help others.
Katrina had a quick wit and great work ethic. She recognized her hard work at school and her job would help her achieve her goal of being “rich like Auntie Marci.” There was not a designer handbag or haunted house she did not like. If something was scary, Katrina was all in. You could always find Katrina raiding her dad’s pantry for coconut rolls or making spicy, oh so spicy, protein-filled meals. Katrina excelled at everything she tried. She even got up on water skis her very first attempt when she was 16 years old. Katrina loved music, but don’t dare turn on country. She was an avid runner and enjoyed working out with her mom and getting weightlifting tips from her dad.
Katrina gave her parents quite a scare on the day she was born. After a long labor and a lot of work on mom’s part, she finally greeted the world, but very quietly. She was a fighter from day one and with the help of the wonderful maternity staff, Katrina started crying…and LOUDLY.
That was the first battle of your precious life. All your battles are done now, sweet girl. Until we meet again, we will listen for your song in the sun, the wind, the rain, the air we breathe. We will see you everywhere, from gorgeous acrylic nails, to the ring on the dinner table from the spilled nail polish remover, to winged eyeliner, and anytime we hear anything related to one of your many interests or hobbies. May you rest in peace, our darling Katrina Jade.
Take a moment to hug your children. Time waits for no one.
Katrina’s service will be held privately. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Charlotte Sopha - December 07, 1939 - February 26, 2022

Departed: 02/26/2022 (DeForest)
Obituary Preview: DeForest – Charlotte Justice Sopha, 82, joined the angels in heaven on February 26, 2022. She was born on December 7, 1939, in Minot, North Dakota the daughter of the late Leon and Lydia Auck. She was a loving mother to Michelle Justice of DeForest and Marla (Mark) Justice Thomas of Raeford, North Carolina, and the late Mark Carl Justice and Monica Faye Justice.
Charlotte is survived by her step-children, Sal Sopha, Steven Sopha, Michael (Cheryl) Sopha and family, Stacy (Brian) Schonasky and family; grandchildren Nicole (Devon) Mullis, Megan Berry, Laurel (Anthony) Timmons, Brianna Justice, Alyssa Storm Justice, and Justin Justice; great-grandchildren Kinley and Quinn Mullis, Adam and John Farr, Elijah Timmons, Luis Carrillo, Wyatt and Tinsley Bevan, Scarlett Faye and Raine Storm, and Gabriella Justice; sisters Bonnie, Diane, and Debbie; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and her fur babies Mickey and Maddy.
She is preceded in death by her husband Stephen Sopha, parents, brothers Marvin, Gary, Larry, and Leroy; sisters Sandy and Carolyn; nephews Troy, Todd, Terry, and Tim; great niece Gabriella Sheflin; and the father of her children Carl Justice.
There are two words to encompass the life Charlotte lived, tradition and passion. Charlotte lived for the traditions regardless of if it was one person or thirty. She always made sure traditions were upheld. Lunch with the ladies, holidays with family, she enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Portage Bowlers Hall of Fame, playing softball and showing her ability to throw the perfect pitch, talks with friends, and dinners on Sunday. These traditions she held dear and lived for the moments of togetherness. She also believed in the time tradition of never leaving the house without presenting herself in the most divine manner. Regardless of where she was going, she was going to look her best, and she did that by wearing her makeup, wearing her jewelry and her heels, although smaller ones with pride almost up until the very end. She loved all Wisconsin sports teams, especially the Milwaukee Brewers. She always loved watching Robin Yount play back in the day.
Charlotte was one of the most passionate individuals of all time. If it was something she loved, she threw herself into it 1000%. She loved making soups and desserts, but she wasn’t going to make just one she would make many, she would make sure her family, friends, and neighbors had their fridges full of her creations. It was the way she showed her love. Charlotte also loved crafting, making innovative pieces, that was her signature style. She loved to shop, for any and everything, especially her favorite collectors’ items. Anyone who knew her, knew she was passionate about being right! Of course, many times she was, and sometimes when she wasn’t, it was best to just agree, because with that passion came feistiness. Taking care of others was her passion, Charlotte was always thinking of others, and with her actions she did what she could to improve people’s lives and that she did in many ways.
Charlotte was one of a kind. Someone who you always enjoyed being around. You could sit with her outside, looking over all the flowers she planted listening to country and gospel music and feel love with the simplest of moments. As a mother, grandma, sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor and friend, Charlotte will be missed.
In the last few years, we have been very fortunate to have amazing family and friends that helped her continue the life that she loved. This is a hard time for us coping with grief, the seemingly insurmountable challenges ahead of us would be overwhelming if not for you, the loving care that you had shown has meant that little by little we are becoming more able to deal with our loss, from Michelle and Marla.

Mildred "Millie" Arlene Herring - December 17, 1934 - February 16, 2022

Departed: 02/16/2022 (DeForest)
Obituary Preview: DEFOREST – Mildred “Millie” Arlene Herring, age 87, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2022 at her residence in the Parkside Retirement Community of DeForest. She was born on December 17, 1934 in the Township of Hampden, WI to parents Arthur and Elsa (Hermanson) Hamre. Millie married Vern Herring on January 22, 1955 in Keyeser, WI. They were blessed with four children and celebrated 65 years of marriage before Vern’s passing in July 2020.
After traveling the world for many years for Vern’s various U.S. Air Force deployments, the couple returned to the DeForest area in 1971. Vern built their home near Morrisonville, where they lived for almost 50 years. Millie spent 15 years with DeForest Morrisonville Bank before retiring in 1987. She held various positions in the loan department and retired as an Assistant Vice President and Loan Officer. Following retirement, Millie and her sister Janice owned J&M Expressions Gift Gallery, a consignment gift and craft shop in Rio, for more than seven years. They both loved making country crafts, music boxes, floral pieces, knick knacks, and wall art to sell.
Millie was a remarkable artist – she loved painting, scratch art, crafting, and rosemaling. In fact, she has created more than 100 rosemaling pieces over the last 30 years. Millie won numerous first place awards for her rosemaling at the annual Stoughton Syttende Mai Festival. She also donated rosemaling pieces for the church bazaar every year.
Among many other talents, Millie was a professional cake decorator for weddings and birthdays. She also loved crocheting, cooking, canning, and working in her flower beds. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family. She always had handmade gifts for her family during the holidays – everyone was always well stocked with afghans, dish cloths, doilies, and pot holders. Millie was very proud to be 100% Norwegian – in that spirit, she often made lutefisk, lefse, and other Norwegian treats for family Christmas gatherings. She was a wonderful cook.
Millie is survived by two children, Yvonne (Tip) Lovicott, and Steven Herring; five grandchildren, Rory (Robin) Herring, Marc (Brittany) Lovicott, Heidi (Chad) Anderson, Brad Lovicott and Tyler Herring; six great-grandchildren, Paige, Reese and Tristan Anderson, Avery, Bryar and Brady Herring; sisters, Janice (Henry) Berg, Vivian Greiber, Audrey (Doug) Herwig; Jean (Craig) Buske; brother-in-law, Arthur Sharpee; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Michael and Tony Herring, brother, Philip Hamre and sister, Elaine Sharpee.
Millie’s family would like to thank the incredible staff at Agrace – especially Amber, Leslie, Chloe, and Sonya for all the loving care these last two months. We also cherish the staff at Parkside Assisted Living for their compassionate care of mom these past six weeks – especially KaLeigh, Jody, Loretta, Riley, Jesse, Ellis, Martha, and Bonnie.  Your love for mom means the world to us.
A celebration of the lives of Millie and Vern will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 24, 2022 at Spring Prairie Lutheran Church, W5448 County Highway DM, Keyeser, WI. Many fond family memories were made enjoying ice cream (his favorite treat), hitting a bucket of golf balls and instructing eager grandchildren how to “earn” their golf cart driving license. Century Oaks became a favorite gathering place for many family celebrations.

Donna M. Kern - September 01, 1952 - January 20, 2022

Departed: 01/20/2022 (DeForest)
Obituary Preview: Oregon - Donna M. Kern passed away on the 20th of January 2022 at the age of 69 at Agrace Hospice Care in Fitchburg. She was born on September 1, 1952, in Madison, Wisconsin, the daughter of Fred and Clara (Anhalt) Mayr.
Donna is survived by her husband Mark, of 47 years; daughters Katie Kern and Tracy Kern; brothers Jerry (Cheryl) Mayr and Gary (Diane) Mayr; grandchildren Logan and Ivy; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. Donna was preceded in death by her parents and brother Lary Mayr.
Donna excelled in high school and graduated with honors from DeForest High School in 1970. She continued her education at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. She met her husband in a physics lab during her freshman year. Their first “date” was working together to finish a physics lab and solve physics problems. Donna excelled in college and graduated in 1974 earning a Bachelor of Science in Education with a double major in Physics and Math. Donna continued her education by attending the University of Wisconsin – Madison studying accounting. During this time, she became a badger football fan. She earned a Master of Science in Accounting with a health care emphasis and afterwards, she obtained a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
Upon attaining her CPA Donna pursued employment in private insurance and eventually moved on to public employment as an auditor for the Federal Government in the Department of Health and Human Services: Office of Inspector General. The purpose of her work was to confirm that various private and public entities were following the proper procedures for billing the federal government, including numerous Medicare and Medicaid related audits. The agency employing Donna was engaged in helping the government save money, imagine that.
During her time with the government, she moved up the government services ranking relatively quickly eventually reaching a high ranking in the Madison office where she remained throughout her career. She received recognition for her hard work and dedicated service during her tenure including Employee of the Month, two Inspector General’s Special Achievement Awards, and a special Inspector General’s Exceptional Achievement Award.
Among many passions pursued during her life, travel ranks at the pinnacle. Upon graduation from college the travel adventures started by exploring Wisconsin which quickly expanded to traveling weeks at a time to all states west of the Mississippi River. This included Hawaii, a state visited several times. Eventually several eastern states were explored. The travel passion expanded to Canada and several European countries. The highlight of her adventures was traveling to Antarctica which gave such joyful memories and the amazing opportunity to view numerous types of penguins up close. Just one frigid pole of the Earth was not enough, next up was traveling toward the North Pole reaching as far as the 80th parallel and visiting Iceland and Greenland along the way.
Unfortunately, a long illness of several years affected the later part of her life. The illness, however, did not dim her spirit or the pursuit of her passions that included some limited travel, nearly constant crocheting, counted cross-stitch, and knitting. No flat surface in the house went uncovered for very long, it would be covered by intricate doilies made by hand.
Family was another passion. Though hampered by illness, the strong expressed desire to survive long enough to experience the joy of grandchildren and their many birthdays helped propel the drive and deep a will to live far beyond her personal life expectation.
A special thanks to Dr. Peter Lee, Dr. Shannon O’Mahar, and nurse practitioner Christa Raymond.
The family prefers that flowers and other forms of remembrances to honor Donna be made as donations to the Christian Faith Moravian Church, DeForest; SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, Madison; or to Agrace Hospice Care, Fitchburg.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. at the Christian Faith Moravian Church, 805 E. Holum St, DeForest.  A visitation is from 9:00 A.M. until 10:55 A.M. Thursday at the Church. A graveside service follows the church service at the Moravian Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the graveside service at the church. Masks are required at the church.

He graduated from Madison East High School in 1990.  Mark was the “Parts Guy” for the past 6 years at North American Mechanical Inc (NAMI) in Windsor, WI where he enjoyed going to work to be the biggest smartass at the office meetings and spent great times with his coworkers who were also his friends.  He also had made many working friendships at Budweiser, Anheuser-Busch and Cameron in Colorado over the years.
Mark married his best friend of 30 years, Johna, on May 15, 2021, at their home in DeForest in the presence of family and close friends who were honored to witness such a beautiful union.  You could see and feel his eyes light up and a thrill in his voice when speaking about her.  Mark loved being a father to his 4 children Austin, Aydin, Aspin and Jada and 3 loving dogs Koie, Bailie and Bear who all made him proud and honored to be called “Dad”.  Mark and Johna, together, always supported their children in all aspects of their lives especially in athletics from a very young age through football, basketball, baseball, volleyball and track.  These activities, together as a family, built a strong bond of love and support as they grew up.  He spent countless hours at practice, games and tournaments always showing up as the proud dad of their dedication, persistence and competitiveness.  Mark was loved beyond measure by his parents Ray (Patti) Kelliher and Nancy (Seeley) Kelliher who were extremely proud of the man he became.  Mark was the youngest brother to Randy Kelliher and Steve (Melissa) Kelliher and sister Marvel (Brad) Browne who always loved him as the wonderful “little brother” he was.  Mark was a “hero” to his nephews and nieces, James, Nolan, Madison, Mason, Payton and Madilyn. Daniel Louis Reynolds - June 25, 1960 - December 19, 2021

Departed: 12/19/2021 (DeForest)
Obituary Preview: Daniel Louis Reynolds, age 61, passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021. He was born on June 25, 1960, to Robert and Nancy (Millette) Reynolds in Madison. Daniel married Ann Marie Hoffman at St. Olaf Catholic Church in DeForest on November 10, 2000.
Dan graduated from Madison East High School in 1978.  He then went on to be a butcher for several years and later met several new friends who introduced him to the idea of engineering.  He graduated from MATC with an engineering degree, designing everything you can imagine.  He had a very sharp mind and witty sense of humor.  He was dangerous when playing trivia whether it was history, music, or sports–you always wanted him on your team.
Dan believed that family and friends were everything, and he held them close.  If you needed anything, he was there to help.  He always made time to listen, laugh, and spend time with those he loved.  He was extremely proud of his children and would talk your ear off about their accomplishments.
Sports-enthusiast does not do justice to Dan’s love of “the game” whether it was baseball, softball, volleyball, football, etc. If it had “ball” attached to it he was either playing it or watching it–unless it was soccer.  He loved the Packers, Badgers, Brewers and has the jerseys to prove it.
If he was not participating in sporting events, you could find him at the cabin fishing with friends and family.  His time on the water, and in nature in general, gave him a sense of peace.  It was there that he would relax, dream, and solve the world’s problems.
Daniel is survived by his wife Ann Maire; children Elizabeth and Ryan; brothers Paul, Brian (Judy), Sean; sister Julie (Stu); mother-in-law Pat; brothers-in-law Carl (Debbie), Earl (Alicia), Tony (Teri), Todd (Kelly), John (Lisa); sisters-in-law Janet and Lois; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and many friends he considered family.
He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Nancy and father-in-law Peter and sister-in-law Anne.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 23, 2021, at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 623 Jefferson Street, DeForest, WI with Father Jared Holzhuter officiating. Visitation will be from 1:30 P.M. until the time of service at church.
