MADISON – Ruth Elaine Wagner was born on July 19, 1939 in Watterstown Township, Blue River, Wisconsin, to Harry and Bertha (nee Boughton) Wagner. She died on April 16, 2022 at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg.
She brought a feisty to spirit to her life, a life marked with moments of deep pain but also full of rich experiences. Ruth grew up on a farm in Marian Township, Boscobel – a place she loved and a place she cried over when her parents decided to sell it. She graduated from Boscobel High School in May, 1957, and married her high school sweetheart, Robert Linder, on June 19, 1957. They lived in several Illinois cities while he was in the Army and in the years afterward. They had two children – Debora and Bryon. The family moved to Madison in May of 1967, as her marriage to Bob ended.  She later married James Erickson in 1974 and after they were divorced, married Douglas Koppen in 1986. They also divorced. Ruth said “having decided she didn’t know how to pick the right partner, she remained very happily single for the rest of her life.”
In March 1987, her 28-year old daughter, now known as Derby Wagner-Richardson, was murdered in Racine. No one was ever charged with the murder. That extraordinarily painful event shaped the rest of Ruth’s life. She took in Derby’s daughters – ages 3 and 7 – to raise but a fierce custody battle ensued and after two years, custody was given to their father.
Ruth became an advocate for victim’s rights legislation in Wisconsin and was active in the Parents of Murdered Children of South Central Wisconsin.
Her work life spanned many types of jobs – accounting, real estate, prison guard, office manager, business tax collector for the state. She retired at age 69 and cherished time to read, attend plays, work on her house, do woodworking. Ruth believed strongly “that all work that was legal was honorable work and that one could learn something from even the most menial job. She recognized and taught her children that sometimes all of the choices available are crappy, in which case you just have to pick the one that’s the least crappy and make the best of it.” She collected Louisa May Alcott books, having been profoundly affected by Little Women.  She admired the resourcefulness of the girls and their mother in the story. “Reach higher,” Ruth would say, “because even if you don’t reach your goal, you’ll get higher than you have otherwise.”
Ruth is survived by her son, Bryon, of Madison; sisters Alice Workinger, Loves Park, Ill. and Ellie Schmidt, Mt. Horeb; and brother, Harry (Judy) Wagner, South Beloit, Ill.; granddaughters Joy Wagner-Richardson and August Marie Bell; a great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Bertha Wagner; step-father Dorland Updike; sister Bette Adams; brother Mike (Dee) Wagner; brothers-in-law Steve Schmidt and Ivan Adams; daughter Derby; niece Angela Wagner; step-niece Kerry Morse; and twin step-great-nieces Sydney and Samantha Whitmarsh; and by her three former husbands.
Services to remember Ruth’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 26, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Phil Haslanger officiating at Ryan Funeral Home, 5701 Odana Rd., Madison. There will be a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. To access the Livestream Link of Ruth’s service or to view and sign this guestbook, please visit:  www.ryanfuneralservice.
Ruth expressed the hope that those attending the service will wear bright and favorite colors – and only wear black if black happens to be their favorite color. Instead of flowers, Ruth asks that donations be made to Domestic Abuse Intervention Services in Madison and the Women’s Resource Center and Bethany Apartments in Racine.

Obituary Preview: Joanne Schmidt, age 85, of Madison, WI died peacefully, April 12, 2022, at Stoughton Hospital, having been called to God’s eternal glory in Christ Jesus. She was born September 5, 1936, to Harvey and Helen (Radewin) Voigt in Milwaukee, Wi. Joanne graduated from Lutheran High School, Milwaukee, WI. in 1954 where she met her high school sweetheart Ronald Schmidt. Joanne supported Ron through dental school (Marquette) and his naval service in Coronado, CA, while growing their family. They returned to Madison in 1963 where they settled. Joanne always focused her efforts on supporting the ambitions of her family above her own. She worked for 17 years in the personal accounts department of Hilldale Bank, retiring as a department manager in 1997. Shortly after retirement, they moved to Tucson, Az and thoroughly enjoyed their new community, golfing and exploring the southwest. In 2010 they returned to Madison to be closer to the family they loved. Jo and Ron enjoyed traveling throughout their lives, often with dear friends, to hiking, sightseeing and scuba diving destinations around the world.
Joanne was blessed with three children; Lori (Brett) Veerman, Randall (Maryann) and Robert (Jodi), nine grandchildren; Courtney (Jeff) Hilmanowski, Jordan Veerman, Dana (Adam) Ewbank, Ryan (Jessica) Schmidt, Zachary (Kaylee) Peters, Hayden Peters, Cailyn Schmidt, Julia Schmidt, and Alyssa Schmidt and four great grandchildren that brought her great joy (Fox, Retta, Harvey, and Molly). She loved being a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and volunteered in the elementary school. Sunday worship has always been a priority for Joanne and Ron. Declining memory, covid risks and Ron’s death could have weakened her resolve, but her determination to be present in church to faithfully worship God only grew stronger.

Faith Erma Bauman - October 02, 1922 - March 23, 2022

Departed: 03/23/2022 (Madison)
Obituary Preview: Faith Erma Bauman October 2, 1922 – March 23, 2022
“The next time I shall see you, it will be in India.” The summons by a visiting missionary sparked the imagination and dreams of the young daughter of a southern Ontario mill worker and his wife, a homemaker, part-time maid, and faithful church volunteer. Faith Erma Bauman, née Weber, pursued those dreams with a passion, sailing to India in 1950 to launch a lifetime of service in mission work. There she met and married the love of her life, David Bauman, an American missionary, and with him raised two sons, Mark and Philip. Over 36 years in service with the United Methodist Church, the couple worked with churches urban and rural in economic development, church administration, Christian education, and outreach, pouring their love and commitment especially into serving the Bhils, a tribal rural population in the western Indian state of Gujarat. In retirement they found a home set in the midst of peach and apple orchards in northern Ohio, and pursued their interests in gardening and canning, astronomical observation, and church and volunteer work. Upon David’s death in 2007, Faith moved to Madison to be near her son and daughter-in-law Mark and Janice, and joined Bethany United Methodist Church, where she was an active member and contributor to women’s and mission fellowship and program groups. Faith died on March 23, 2022, at the age of 99.
“It’s been a varied and interesting life, hasn’t it?” Faith mused just two weeks prior to her death. Varied, and as unlikely as can be dreamed only by the wildest imaginations of the heart. Born October 2, 1922, Faith and her identical twin sister Hope, along with older brother George, were raised in the small town of Preston, Ontario, and steeped in the evangelical faith of their parents, Norman and Mildred Weber. Though the family bore the challenges of the Great Depression, Faith recalled her childhood as idyllic, later telling stories of piano lessons, her father’s bountiful garden, her mother’s baking and canning, taking baths in an old metal tub by the kitchen stove – the only source of heat in the home – skating to school on the frozen river, picking strawberries in summer for a penny a carton, and recycling newspapers for a dollar a wagonload. Faith and Hope were inseparable, as alike in their passions as in their looks, together developing an interest in serving abroad as missionaries, a fantasy that began to take root when as young teenagers at a church camp they met a missionary on furlough from India. Post-high school the twins moved to Ottawa to work in government jobs as part of the war effort, and there, a local pastor urged them to attend to God’s calling by preparing for ministry. Though their parents had no money, they enrolled in Waterloo College on the promise of support from both the Ottawa and home churches, budgeting 80 cents per day for food and paying tuition bills with money that arrived just barely in time. Upon graduation they applied to the Board of Missions of the United Church of Canada, which led to further graduate work in Christian Education and Theology in Toronto, field work in Alberta and Ontario, until finally at nearly 28 years of age, Faith sailed from Montreal down the St. Lawrence to the open Atlantic and Liverpool, and from there on to Bombay. Hope had already taken an assignment in Manitoba, the beginning of a storied career as one of the groundbreaking women ministers in the United Church, and from that day on the twins, who had to then lived their entire lives in close step with each other, set off for separate adventures on opposite sides of the globe.
Mission assignment to India started with Hindi language studies in the Himalayan resort town of Mussoorie, where to her surprise Faith met the very same missionary who nearly fifteen years earlier had promised, “The next time I shall see you, it will be in India.” She also made casual acquaintance with an American, David Bauman, of the Methodist Church. On assignment in central and western India, Faith took on Christian education and evangelism work, then moved to Rajasthan where she first engaged in ministry among the Bhils, an aboriginal community who resided mostly in rural poverty in Western India. It was through that work that Faith encountered David again, also working among the Bhils, in nearby Gujarat. A friendship soon blossomed into courtship: engaged during a Christmas visit in 1954, the couple married the following year in early December, 1955, at the little stone church in the town of Neemuch, Faith’s home. Neither David’s nor her parents were able to cross the globe to attend the event.
Marriage to David was her next big adventure, as Faith left her beloved United Church to serve under his American Methodist Board. While raising their sons Mark and Philip, Faith and David served the remainder of their careers as missionaries with the Gujarat Conference of the Methodist Church of India. Their work was varied and innovative, so expansive and in depth that by their retirement in 1986, after 36 years of service, they were loved and acclaimed by thousands whose lives they had touched. Periodic furloughs to the U.S. and Canada during those years of service afforded occasions for travel – to South America, Southeast Asia and Japan, and to Europe – opportunities unimaginable to the working-class Ontarian day laborer and the homemaker/maid who decades earlier had set the young girl’s heart toward service and adventure.
Retirement to America, a land that had never been her home and in a modern culture foreign to her experience, provided Faith her next great adventure, and with it, opportunities for friendship, a new church engagement, and reconnections with family – including most especially her beloved twin, Hope, in nearby Ontario. During those early retirement years, the couple continued to identify as wandering sojourners, displaced from their true home, India, and so they returned there, periodically, a total of seven times together – to see friends, revisit their work, and in at least a couple occasions, for Faith to reprise as visiting lecturer an intensive course in biblical literature at the seminary in which she had earlier taught. Children who had sat at her knee decades earlier were now church leaders – pastors, and a bishop – and she and David were repeatedly celebrated for the impact their life and work had had on the people whose lives they touched.
When Faith’s lifelong closest friend, her beloved twin Hope, died in 2002 and when only five years later David, too, died, she realized, at the age of 85, her wandering spirit was calling her to her newest, and final, home, in Madison, close to Mark, her oldest son, and his wife Janice.
It was here in Madison that Faith put down roots for the final time, becoming an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church, serving God through her participation in its ministries of peace and justice and in its fellowship. She reveled in time spent with Mark’s grown children, Ben, Sarah, and Rachel, watching them mature and make their way in the world, and welcoming their life partners Alex and Anna, and two great grandchildren, Everett and Augustin. And she enjoyed periodic visits in Massachusetts, and later Colorado, with her youngest, Philip, and his family – wife Chris, and son and daughter Sam and Nicki. In Madison, new friendships were created and treasured, and she found new opportunities to serve, including raising money for local and global charitable organizations by knitting and selling stuffed animal toys for children.
Following a Christmas with family, Faith experienced a series of health issues that led to full-time nursing care. Shortly thereafter, in the presence of the loving God to whom she had dedicated her life, and in anticipation of the company of the beloved who had preceded her, including her sister Hope and husband David, Faith Bauman died peacefully on Wednesday evening, March 23, 2022. Honoring her choice, a small gathering of her loved ones laid her body to rest in a green burial at Natural Path Sanctuary, Verona, on Saturday the 26th.
The family gratefully thanks friends from Bethany UM Church and Greentree Glen Apartments for their wonderful love and faithful support for Faith.
A service in celebration of the life of Faith Bauman will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at Bethany United Methodist Church, 3910 Mineral Point Rd, Madison. Please join us at 10 a.m. for visitation and at 11 a.m. for the service. A luncheon reception follows.

She was the 5th of 8 children and little sister to Irene Snyder (Harold) from New Braunfels, TX, James (Hazel) Boland of Arcadia/Altoona, Bill (Florence) Boland of Arcadia and Phyllis Hostettler (Jerome) of Virginia Beach, VA. She was the big sister to Dick (Bernice), of Independence, Bob (Betty), and Tom (Joan) of Arcadia. Always last to leave the party, we lovingly called Mom “The Closer,” as she was able to visit, pray for and love each of her siblings until death parted them. She mourned each loss quietly but deeply, and never stopped praying for each soul. At the age of 13, Ruth lost her right eye to a strep infection. The challenges from this were permanent, but taught her more than it took from her, as Ruth became compassionate, caring and ever generous; a fighter, not only for herself, but for every cause she felt strongly about, including her Catholic faith and the Democratic Party!
Ruth was a 1941 graduate of Arcadia High School. She attended the Western Institute of Technology, La Crosse, WI and later in life, UW-Madison. She retired from the University of Wisconsin Systems Administration after 40 years of federal and state employment.
Ruthie married her love, John J. Tormey, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Arcadia on October 11, 1947. They met while performing in a Blackfriars Community Theatre play in Madison. Ruth played John’s mother! They were parted physically at John's death, January 1, 1991, but Ruth loved John always and forever.
Together they were founding members of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish and later, active members of St. Raphael Cathedral, Madison. Ruth was bestowed the honor of Lady Commander in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre and was a member of Court Madison, Catholic Daughters of the Americas since 1946.
She was an active member in the Shamrock Club of Dane County for many years, sang with the Shamrock Singers and was extremely proud of her Irish heritage. When she and John lived on Westmorland Blvd., growing award-winning Dahlias became her hobby, and Ruth joined the Dahlia Society. She was an active volunteer for many organizations and charities throughout her life and a passionate member of several card clubs. Ruth is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Maureen and Bill Swenson of Madison, grandchildren, Meagan(Jen Pope) of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Johnny Swenson of Orlando, FL, Willie (Edith) Swenson of Madison and Stacey(Damian) Novy of Holmen, WI; Honorary Grandchildren, Briana Reda Wolfe of Columbus, Amanda Reda Goglio, Ryan and Brandon Reda all of Madison; Great Grandchildren Mason, Abigail, Keevon, Tianna, Taleah, Logan and Elliana. She is also survived by a very special
“little sister,” Kathleen McCloskey Loeb Ranzini of Webster Groves, MO, sister-in-law, Joan Boland of Arcadia, and numerous nieces and nephews, many of whom are Ruth’s Godchildren. As a mom, grandma, great grandma, and aunt, Ruth lived for her faith and her family. She was a strong, stubborn at times, loving woman who overcame many obstacles in life to arrive at her final destination with our Lord. We know that there will now be endless Bridge playing and card games in Heaven. We love you always, Mom.
Special thanks to All Saints Assisted Living, St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Mary’s Care Center Staff, especially the Vilas Neighborhood, for ALL they did for Mom. Each of you found unique ways to show your loving kindness to Ruthie and to our family. God bless you everyone. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 4th with Msgr. Larry Bakke presiding.
