Departed: 04/24/2024 (Marcellus)
Obituary Preview: J. Michael Kelly, 75, of Marcellus, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at University Hospital with family by his side.
Mike was a life resident of Marcellus. He was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church. Mike graduated from Marcellus Central Schools in 1967 and Syracuse University Newhouse School of Communications with a Bachelor's degree in 1971. Mike worked at the Syracuse Herald-Journal and Post-Standard newspapers until his retirement, covering county politics, agriculture and later for 16 years was the outdoor editor for The Post-Standard. Patricia M. Skinner - July 02, 1938 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (Marcellus)
Obituary Preview: Patricia M. Skinner, 85, avid flower gardener, skier extraordinaire, most beloved Aunt, passed away peacefully in her sleep March 15th, family at her side. Born and raised in Syracuse, where she lived most all her life, Pat was a proud graduate of St. John's the Evangelist, one of the nine parochial schools in Syracuse at that time.
A striking willowy redhead, as a teen Pat was recruited to model the latest fashions for civic events about town for Dey Brothers and Edwards department stores. Pat had a long career as a dental receptionist starting with Dr. Edward McEneny where she eventually managed the practice before working at several other dental offices. She later started a cleaning business which she ran for many years. Pat also worked quietly, without pay, taking care of her elderly neighbors.
Pat loved tending her flower gardens, interior decorating and spending summers on Otisco Lake. She treated her sisters' children as her own. The Spaulding and Thornton clans were lavished with Pat's time, undivided attention, humor and high jinks. There were adventures.
An accomplished skier, Pat often hauled her "kids" along to Song Mountain and Killington Vermont stuffed into her light blue Volkswagen Beetle, John Denver on cassette. She later had a fast and faithful group of expert ski buddies that kept base camp at Labrador and skied together in Colorado, Utah, Vermont, Canada and Europe. Her wardrobe of one-piece ski suits and hats from the seventies is legendary.
Pat's father, Barney Skinner, was a longtime owner of the Rexall Drugstore on West Onondaga Street. Her mother, Anna May, was a homemaker and lover of flowers, inspiring Pat's penchant for getting her hands into the earth. The family spent all summer for forty years renting the "Red Camp" on Otisco Lake. Pat, her sisters and friends were ever in the water or having adventures in their Adirondack guide boat 'Skinner's Folly'.
Pat lived her life with great faith and simplicity, brightening the lives of all who knew her with kindness, generosity and an easy smile, laugh and mischievous sense of humor.
Pat was predeceased by her parents William Barnard and Anna May Skinner, and her niece (and kindred redhead) Kara Spaulding. She is survived by her sisters Nancy Spaulding and Barbara Thornton, eleven nieces and nephews and a bevy of grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Godspeed Aunt Pat, to the heavenly slopes, where there is nary a lift-line and always a bluebird powder day. A Mass of Christian Burial, and the burial, will be private. In lieu of donations, please contribute to carrying on Pat's memory by planting your favorite flowers this spring.

Caroline P. Kendall - June 01, 1930 - November 23, 2023

Departed: 11/23/2023 (Marcellus)
Obituary Preview: Caroline P. Kendall, 93, of Marcellus, NY, passed away peacefully in her home on November 23, 2023. Caroline was born on June 1, 1930, to Samuel and Catherine Peckham of Newington, CT. She had eight siblings and grew up on the family's dairy farm. Caroline and her sister were the first women to be licensed to pasteurize milk in the state of Connecticut! When she wasn't in school or working on the farm, she played the accordion in a local band. She often spoke about living and working on the farm during WWII; Caroline and her siblings assumed much of the farm work as the hired men were called to serve; their silo was painted black because it was a landmark to the airport; and blackout curtains were installed in the basement in order to candle the eggs at night.
As a young adult, Caroline packed her trunk and boarded a bus to embark on a new adventure in Syracuse, NY. She resided at the YWCA and worked as a lab technician at Bristol Myers, doing research on penicillin in chicken feed. She and a friend moved into an apartment, and through a colleague, she met Harold Kendall Jr. They married in 1955 and raised five children: Harold III, Jeffrey, Julie, Gregory, and Gordon. While Caroline's primary devotion was caring for her children and their home, she shared her passion for farming with her husband. They had their own small farm, raising beef cattle and hosting a menagerie of other animals, including chickens, horses, ducks, and pigs. Between the beef and Caroline's epic garden, the family enjoyed organic, home-grown dinners every night. She will be remembered as faith-filled, hardworking, strong, independent, fearless, fun-loving, and joyful. She referred to herself as a true "Connecticut Yankee." We will continue to repeat her favorite phrase, "Waste not, want not."
The family is eternally grateful to Caroline's very special team of caregivers: Hillary, Emily, Debby, Yawoa, Edie, Antoinette, Phillip, Leah, and Daisy. You loved her and cared for her with tenderness and joy.
Caroline is predeceased by her husband, Harold Jr., and her son, Harold III. She is survived by her four children, Jeffrey (Kristine), Julie Witty, Gregory, and Gordon; five grandchildren, Casey (Hayley), Krystal (Matthew) Barletta, Emily (Tyler) Plahanski, Katie (Alex) Banks, and Patrick Kendall; and three great-grandchildren, Aleea Kendall, Carter Barletta, and Owen Plahanski.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 6pm on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Ryan Funeral Home, 44 E. Main Street, Marcellus. The service and burial will be private.
